Edit files on a server with dreamweaver CS5

I am having a problem editing files directly from a ftp server. I just updated to Cs5 from Cs3 and seem to of lost the ability to edit and change files on a live server. I understand that I can download an entire site, but with the amount of sites that I maintain this is not doable storage wise. I am assuming there is a way to bypass the local/remote server sync, but have yet  to figure it out. I have search the forums and support FAQs but alas found nothing.
Thanks in advance for your time
Nate

Hi Nate,
in these cases I'm not a friend of a detailed troubleshooting. It is one of the reasons that I prefer an external FTP program. The difficulties with which you have to fight encourage me in this opinion, not least because we always search for experts, we don't charge a "jack of all trades".
For this reason, to manage, for example, several websites or to upload my files and sometimes for the opposite way, for a necessary download from my server or to use a "a site-wide synch", I'm using FileZilla. It simply looks easier for me to keep track of all operations precisely and generate or reflect easily the desired tree structure.
Above all, FileZilla has a feature (translation from my German FileZilla) called "compare file list". Here it's possible to use file size or modification time as a criterion. There is also the possibility to "hide identical files", so that only these files which you want to redact remain visible.
And even if it means you have to install a new program, I am convinced that there is an advantage. Here is the link to get it and where you can read informations about how it works:
http://filezilla-project.org/ and
http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Tutorial#Using_the_site_manager
Mac: Mac OS X
http://filezilla-project.org/download.php
Of course, you also need all the access data to reach your server.
Good luck

  • Need a List of Files on Application Server WITH "Last Changed Date".

    Experts:
I'm currently using FM 'SUBST_GET_FILE_LIST' but it does not return the date which I need because I'm working on something that needs to build an internal table of the files on the server with the oldest file on top (which means I need to sort by the date).
I've searched this forum and there's several existing posts with different function modules and I've tried several but they either display an ALV grid or they do return an itab but it doesn't have the date.
    Please help and thank you!

    You can try:
data: begin of tabl occurs 0,          "execute command on server
            line(200),
          end of tabl.
call 'SYSTEM' id 'COMMAND' field com

  • Upload an excel file in the server  with a background job

I am trying to upload an excel file in the server, but i only can upload flat files, i can upload files in local with the function ALSM_EXCEL_TO_INTERNAL_TABLE, can i use this function reading an excel file in the server, or is there another possibility of uploadinging an excel file in the server  with a background job ?
    thanks in advance

    Hi
First read the file from the server to some temporary place at presentation layer and then open it. And if required, save it to the server afterwards. To read/write files to application server you can use:
    1. Statements "OPEN DATASET/CLOSE DATASET".
    2. There are some FMs for server file operations, like "C13Z_FILE_UPLOAD_BINARY" and "C13Z_FILE_DOWNLOAD_BINARY".

  • Problem with Dreamweaver CS5.5

I have a proplem with Dreamweaver CS5.5 CSS panel. When you in the css panel box when you select and add a property, and then tab over to enter the values, all it does is highlight the box. In all previous versions when you tab over, you would be automattically able to start entering values without having to click in the fieild. Any suggesstions? This is becoming very frustrating, and slowing down my workflow that I have used since Dreamweaver CS3, CS4 and CS5.

  • Can I edit a WordPress theme on a remote server with DW CS5?

I'm sure this isn't that difficult, but I'm going nuts trying to figure it out.
How do I tell DW CS5 to open my WordPress theme on a remote server so I can edit it using all the great new features?  I'm not using my "real" blog/site for this.
I have gone through the tutorials to set up a local testing server, but I'd really like to be able to edit on my host too.  It's got to be possible, but I'm just not finding the answer.  Please help!

I use Dreamweaver CS4 to work on remote WordPress themes/sites all the time and it works very well.
I never bother setting up a testserver on my local machine since I work from different locations, so I work directly on the remote server from wherever I am.
I will try to give you step by step directions:
(I am on CS4 so it may be a little different for you but the basics will be the same),
Set up your site with site/manage sites/advanced
For the Local root folder you give the folder on your hard drive where you keep your files
    Set links relative to document.
For Remote info set access to FTP
    FTP host will be ftp.yoursite.com
Host directory is the path to your theme folder, in my case that is httpdocs/wordpress/wp-content/themes/mytheme/
Then give your login and password and check "use passive FTP"
check "maintain synchronization information" and "automatically upload files to server on save".
    For testing server check "none"
    For version control click "none"
(it could be a good idea to use version control through subversion but for a one-man operation it may be a little overkill, we leave that for now to keep things simple)
For cloaking check "enable cloaking", check "cloak files ending with" and give the file extensions of the files you keep in your local folder for building your website but don't want to be uploaded to your remote server, like .fla .psd .set .rtf .doc  etcetera.
Now you are ready to start working on your theme.
In your files panel you can switch from local view to remote view. You can use the "get" and "put" commands (the arrows) to move files from local to remote and vice versa. I always work with child themes*. So in my theme folder there will be only a style.css file, a functions.php file, maybe some template files and an images folder. I use my local style.css file to make changes. On save, they are automatically uploaded and Dreamweaver also handles the "dependent" files, like images. No need to bother about that, really easy. Use the browsers on your machine to check your site.
The downside of working on a remote server is off course that if you make a mistake you will mess up your site. Luckily, in this setup you can just use "undo", save the file and you are back to were you were, as long as you work on your local files (and let DW upload those automatically after you save)
For safety and convenience, I keep all my local files in a Dropbox** folder. Everytime I save the file, a version is saved. So I can always go back to versions I  made hours, days or weeks ago. If you're on a mac you could also use timemachine for this, but timemachine only backups every hour, where Dropbox keeps every copy you save(as long as you have enough free space in your Dropbox that is)
    To sum it up:
    • Setup your site with Site/manage sites
    • work locally and let DW automatically upload the files you edited to the remote server
    • setup your local machine so that versions are kept with Dropbox
    • work on child themes instead of making changes to the original theme
    • use a browser to view your work
    * child themes are the easy and clever way of working with themes.

  • Downloading and editing an existing WordPress site in Dreamweaver CS5.

Hello! New to the forums, here.
I'll try to be brief. I've got a WordPress site in-place at metalmeter.com that is hosted through HostGator. Basically, what I'm looking to do is get the site from the remote server and edit it in Dreamweaver CS5, previewing all changes on a local testing server before putting the updated contents back on the remote server.
Now, let me be clear: I've tried plenty of the tutorials. I've watched hours of videos. I still can't get it configured properly. I've got the FTP connection to the remote server running smoothly. I've got XAMPP installed. I'm having difficulties (and I apologize for being vague), and I just don't know where the problem is located. In my htdocs folder for XAMPP, I've got two subfolders 'metalmeter' for the remote server's downloaded contents, and 'wordpress' for the wordpress installation that every page seems to be pointing me toward. What confuses me is that when I try and open the uppermost index.php file on the remote server, the dynamically discovered content is not being displayed in the live view with my local testing server. I want to be viewing my existing WordPress site in its entirety exactly as I see it online while I'm editing it, and then pushing back updated files to the /public_html/ root directory of the remote server so that I can edit the site from my local client. I'm extremely new to Dreamweaver, so any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
If you know how to do exactly what I'm trying to do and have been successfully viewing and editing your existing WordPress site in Dreamweaver for upload, please take some time to explain the set-up. I'd be forever in your debt!

I've been following this discussion for a while now and I don't understand why you hope to edit articles from DW.  That's what the WP Admin panel is specifically designed for.  Besides, you won't find your articles in any of the site files because they don't exist there.
I agree I don't see any reason to want to edit a Wordpress site in Dreamweaver. If you are using Wordpress then you may as well put Dreamweaver in the bin. Although people do actually want to edit and manipulate the design in Dreamweaver (including myself) and from what I've read its possible but I've never found a source which explains fully how to achieve this and those that I have it seems too much effort to even bother about.
I guess the Dreamweaver environment feels more like home and is more user friendly.
To put it another way, a typical WordPress installation contains around 800 files in some 80 folders.  Those files don't contain any content, just a whole lot of PHP code.   In fact, the only page most people ever see on your site is the index.php page which is dynamically created over & over by the server with content from the MySql and various include files.
For sure and that's why people who use Dreamweaver and feel the need to manipulate a Wordpress site in Dreamweaver because Wordpress is 'in vogue' get lost. Wordpress just containes a lot of pages with nothing to see apart from some php, many of who will not understand one jot.
Unless you're a coding guru, you should definitely NOT touch any of the core WP files as this could cripple your site.  If you want to customize your Theme, look at the CSS and include files in your Themes folder.   See Anatomy of a WordPress Theme:http://yoast.com/wordpress-theme-anatomy/
    lol your not wrong there!
For a quick tip on Theming, open your remote site in Firefox equipped with the 'Web Developer Toolbar'.  Edit CSS on screen.  Save changes to your local site and upload it to the remote server.  No testing server required.
Wordpress is Wordpress and Dreamweaver is Dreameaver. As far as I can make out the two don't mix.
Ideally you would just choose a Wordpress theme which most relates to the nice site you have designed in Fireworks of which you won't find any however goodthe themes are. Then manipulate the themes css that's if you can understand it. Even for a seasoned css expert its heavy going because everyone produces css differently to achieve the same results.
Leave Wordpress well anlone unles you're going to use it out of the box so to speak or as a web-developer don't mind a bit of reverse engineering.

  • How to edit files directly from server?

I'm new to dreamweaver (CS5) and I'm really lost when it comes to editing files directly in remote servers.
When you add a new site, you have to select a Local Site Folder. I dont mind that html editor saves auto backups to my computer, but I really dont want to download files from the server, edit them and upload them back to the server. In my work I always edit files directly over SFTP servers.
After spending time configuring DW, I can now connect to the remote server, edit a file and save it to the server (I know that really the files are automatically downloaded to my pc and sent back when saved). The only problem with this is that everytime I open a file from server, I get this annoying prompt "Do you wish to overwrite your local copy of [FILE]?"
How can I disable this for good, or is the dreamweaver just not the right tool to edit files directly from servers?

Again, if you are doing it the easy way, you don't download files from the server to edit them.
Always edit local files. Then upload them.
When you open Dreamweaver, your Files panel should be showing Local View, NOT Remote View. That way you are working with local files.
The way you're doing it here's what happens:
    1. You doubleclick a file in the Files panel (Remote View)
    2. Dreamweaver connects to your server and MUST download the file and related content (because the software IS NOT installed on the server and you CANNOT edit there)
    3. When the file is downloaded, Dreamweaver asks if you wish to overwrite the local file because when you save it before putting the file back, your OS will not allow two files of the same name in the same location and the file MUST be saved before you can put it back.
    4. You then put the file to the server, overwriting the original file.
All of that can be avoided by simply opening THE LOCAL FILE and editing it. Then you put it to the server, and overwrite the original with the edited file.
"What if someone else modifies a file on the server after I saved it, when I open and edit a local file, wont I just replace it when I upload it?"
If multiple people have access to the same files on the server, you NEED to have collaboration software so that when a change is made it can be saved by EVERYONE who has access to the site. Something like LiveCycle.
Without that your site will be a mess in no time because six different people (or more) will have six different copies of six different sites locally and they will all be working on it at the same time and it will end up like a Three Stooges movie where Larry, Curly and Moe are all cooking dinner and each adds the same ingredients at different times.

For the kind of money that Adobe charges, my expectation is that the Adobe software should be of the highest caliber. Wish I had known. I would not have  saved for months in order to buy 5.5. I bought Dreamweaver specifically for the mobile piece. I'm disappointed to say the least. I think there is something VERY wrong when users have to supply the fixes and/or search for days or months for help. This is inexcuseable from a software company as well known as Adobe. When I purchase a product that is this costly, I just expect it to work.
Currently, thanks to a fellow Dreamweaver user, I managed to get the Adroid sdk and emulator working early this morning. This after days of searching and thinking that I must be doing something wrong. It had to be me. It couldn't be Adobe.
Come on, having to tweek an internal xml file in order to get the Android emulator to work from Dreamweaver? How many of us could find this fix ourselves?
Xcode is still in limbo giving me the error messages mentioned in this thread. Now it appears that we as users are expected to go in and tweek .h camera files in hopes the fix will work? This is ridiculous. Where is the adobe support and updates to deal with all of this? Seems a little like false advertising to say that mobile apps with compile to code. Steamed? You bet.

  • What is the best video format to use with Dreamweaver CS5.5

My client has asked what format to convert their video to before sending it to me to be placed on their homepage. I'm using DreamWeaver CS5.5 with an HTML5 template - trying to steer clear of Flash for this new site. On other sites, I embed videos from their hosting site (YouTube, SchoolTube, etc).
My question to the forum is what is the best way (and prefered format) now days to insert a video onto a webpage using DreamWeaver CS5.5 and HTML5. I have the Adobe Web Premium package.

In the chapter on video in Dive Into HTML5 it says this:
There is no single combination of containers and codecs that works in all HTML5 browsers.
This is not likely to change in the near future.
To make your video watchable across all of these devices and platforms, you’re going to need to encode your video more than once.
    And a suggested workflow:
For maximum compatibility, here’s what your video workflow will look like:
Make one version that uses WebM (VP8 + Vorbis).
Make another version that uses H.264 baseline video and AAC “low complexity” audio in an MP4 container.
Make another version that uses Theora video and Vorbis audio in an Ogg container.
Link to all three video files from a single <video> element, and fall back to a Flash-based video player.
I think that your starting point is to consider your target audience.

  • PhoneGap for iOS build error with Dreamweaver CS5.5, PhoneGap 1.2, XCode 4.2.1 (4D502)

Hi, I was trying to build and emulate a PhoneGap project with following environment, but it failed:
    OS X Lion 10.7.2
    Adobe Dreamweaver CS5.5 (11.5 Build 5344)
PhoneGap 1.2 (I updated from DW's original version following this instruction)
The build of application failed to complete successfully. This is the link of the log file I got: log file
Following is my screenshot on Application Setting:
I wonder this may involve in updating PhoneGap to latest version. But could you help me pass this problem?

Hi Peter, Thank you for your solution.
First of all, it is very good that your error log and mine one is same. But I found the line you mentioned in Camera.h file already code like this:
    @property (nonatomic) enum DestinationType returnType;
So I wonder do I need to remove 'enum' or not. Could you give me any suggestion?

  • What graphics/photo editing software do you use with dreamweaver?

I just purchased Dreamweaver CS5 a few days ago.
I'm using the demo version of Fireworks CS5 and have played around a bit with the demo version of photoshop element 8.
I'm wondering if I would be able to do everything with photoshop CS5 that I'm able to do in Fireworks CS5 and photoshop elements.
Guess I could ask this question in the photoshop forum, but I really wanted to hear from developers and designers that use dreamweaver too.
What would you suggest to use for a graphics/photo editing program.
    Thanks,
    jp

Thanks for the input so far.
Here is my thinking. I have used free html editors for years. Mostly first page from http://www.evrsoft.com/.
Then I decided to try the demo of dreamweaver after reading about the new integrated CMS support.
After just a couple weeks of using dreamweaver I purchased it. I like dreamweaver much better then the free editors I have used over the years.
So onto graphics/photo editing software. I have also used simple and free photo editing programs over the years. I have decided to try and learn not only more code, but also try to gain some graphic skills.
Most of what I would be doing would be graphics for the web, but I also need some kind of photo editing tools.
So do I buy just fireworks CS5 and use it for not only graphics, but to also edit photos.
Do I purchase both Fireworks and photoshop elements 9 or should I spend a little more and go with photoshop CS5.
Is photoshop CS5 more stable then fireworks or photoshop elements?
I'm running windows 64 bit system with a i3 and 4 gig of ram with duel monitors.
    Thanks for your input.

  • Edit files directly on server

I have been working with dreamweaver for years now, and I feel that either i'm missing something, or Adobe is missing a very atrractive feature. I think I'll illustrate this through an example.
With Microsift Visual Web Developer, a program which I extremely dislike has an add a site feature. When you do this, you enter all of the FTP information and so on, from here, when you create/open a web document it opens it directly from the server (not from a folder where you have a complete copy of the site on your computer). When I click save (ctrl+S) it saves it directly to the server via FTP. Can I accomplish this in Dreamweaver? I work with PHP files a lot, along with WordPress, and I'd rather make minor CSS changes "on the fly" hit the hotkeys for save, and see the changes without having to select "put" or sync the site.
    Thanks for your support
    Zach

    Murray, here's my dilemma:
I do most of my work on a computer that is locally networked to the server that hosts the files so I do not need FTP or any other out of network access to the files when using this computer.
Sometimes I do need to access the files from my laptop, remotely via FTP.
If I setup the locally networked computer so the server folder is my Dreamweaver local folder and I do not set up a remote server or remote folder, it works and I’m able to search/replace but then when I preview in a browser, it previews using the local path (e.g.; \\server\website\root\) instead of the sites URL so dynamic content does not show. I would like for Dreamweaver to use the URL instead of the path. The only way I can get it to do that is by setting up a remote server and selecting ‘Local/Network’ under the ‘Connect Using:’ settings. Then I specify the same folder as I did for the local site. I guess it’s working but I have gotten write errors before.
If I use my laptop to access remotely, I would like the ability to use the search/replace function but I guess the only way to do that is to have a local site on the laptop?
So please tell me exactly how does RDS differ from FTP?
What do I put in each of the input boxes? The tiles differ from the FTP boxes.
