Edit Frame Accurate To Music?

I have a beginner's question, since I've never used Final Cut Express before. Is it possible to do totally frame accurate editing, so that you can edit video perfectly in-time with music? Can you zoom into the video timeline and see each individual frame, and move an edit point to line up with a beat?

Hi Ian, I use the same technique as Michel and it works pretty well.
You don't have to hit m at every beat, but having a regular and continuos set of markers in a section of audio, helps you to decide later which marker to use to sync your video. Obviously, I use markers on the audio clip, not on the timeline, so they are bound to it.
About precision: it's possible to go out of sync, but it's easy enough to be precise if you listen your music carefully. I guess another factor for precision may be the Mac responsivness: faster systems allow to be more precise than slower ones (I saw a big improvement moving from older Macs to my new MacBook Pro).
In any case I agree with you: too many cuts may become boring or distracting. In fact, I sometimes use this technique to conclude a movie with a lively rithmic music: then I sync a selection of stills and/or short clips to the music just before the movie end. At most one minute, usually no more than that.

  • Premiere Elements 8: Scene Markers Not Frame Accurate on Burned DVDs

I have Premiere Elements 8, and I have just begun to burn DVDs of projects. I have discovered that the Scene Markers I have carefully placed at precise points in my footage (such as the very first frame of a scene) are not placed at those specific points in a burned DVD of the footage. They are out by several frames either early or late, the deviation being fairly inconsistent.
I placed 8 Scene Markers in the timeline of the project I have just completed, and were transferred to DVD with these Scene Markers at the following points on the resulting disc:
Scene Marker 1 was 7 frames early
Scene Marker 2 was 3 frames late
Scene Marker 3 was 2 frames late
Scene Marker 4 was 5 frames late
Scene Marker 5 was 5 frames late
Scene Marker 6 was 5 frames late
Scene Marker 7 was 7 frames late
Scene Marker 8 was 2 frames early
I was not expecting any deviation at all. There is no frame deviation when editing footage and transferring to DVD, it is absolutley frame-accurate, so why is there any deviation on the resulting DVD when it comes to the placement of Scene Markers?

If I am using GOP material, knowing that that material's I-Frames might not be 100% accurate with my desires, is to always have a Dip-to-Black Transition to about 02 sec. of Black Video, between all of my Clips. Then, I can locate my Chapter Markers on that Black Video. This also gets me that Dip-to-Black (and back from black), between Chapters. I like the aesthetics of those, and the solve any GOP issue.
Those Dip-to-Black also cover any "black flashes," that one often sees, when the DVD player's head seeks the next Chapter. The black flash will come when the screen is already black, so no one will ever see them.
I use a Dip-to-Black in editing, to show the passage of time, and perhaps the change in location (or both), and as Chapters usually feature one of those, the Dip-to-Black is ideal. Within a Chapter, if I use a Dip-to-Black (passage of time, or change in location), and the passage of time is quite long, then I will increase the Duration of the Black Video between the Clips even more. Just one way that I employ Transitions, and especially Dip-to-Black.
    Good luck,

  • Any way to get frame accurate in icon view mode?

Does anyone know if there is a way set frame accurate in points in icon view mode?  I know that if you are "hover scrubbing" a clip, and then click on it you can use the JKL keys to shuttle through the footage.  But is there any way to go frame-by-frame through the footage as well?
I ask because I have a 4-camera shoot where the clips were synced by a slate clap.  I'd like to make a multicam clip from the shots so am going through and setting the "clap" as the in point of each clip, and then using them as sync points for the multicam clip.  I hover scrub to the general area of the slate clap (works great) then use the JKL key to narrow in "clap" even more (also works great).  However, it is nearly impossible to stop exactly on the frame where the slate hits using the JKL keys.  So I would like to get in the general vicinity using JKL, and then use some other keys or method to get to the exact frame of the "clap".  One would assume that the arrow keys would do this, but they don't.
Does anyone know if there is a way to accomplish this?  Thanks in advance for any help.

I understand your point, and it never ocurred to me that I part of my normal workflow when doing things like that to more than a few clips is to select all of the clips and put them all in the Source Monitor with a single command. (Select them all, right click, and select "Open in Source Monitor".) So I don't go back and forth between windows. I guess I have been doing it so long I missed that step in the explanation. Sorry about that. Also, please understand that I skipped CS4 and CS5 so when I started using CS6 I have never really been comfortable with the hover scrub for anything serious. Not yet anyway.
I figure that all of the clips will end up in the Source Monitor anyway before they hit the timeline, so why not put them up there and as I finish with each one I close that window and start on the next one.
Those of us who go back to when Premiere became Premiere Pro have been waiting for some of these features a very long time. Slap-your-head it might be to you or me, but Adobe only has so much money to pay engineers and there is always something more important to work on. Like becoming codec agnostic or handling huge frame sizes. Adobe has borrowed many features from FCP, but it is still a work in progress. We just submit feature requests and attempt to convince others to do the same. You can't imagine how much time we spent a decade ago getting people to create the proper sequence. Now you just drag a clip to the New Item button and your sequence is perfect. That is magic to someone like me, who taught people how to use Premiere Pro 1.5 by copying FCP tutorials and recreating them in Premiere Pro (for Lynda.com) using the same footage.
Jim Simon is often quite vocal about things he would rather see done that some of the requests. I agree with him most of the time, but every now and then a little thing I think should be done is not on his list and he will let me know in no uncertain terms why he thinks what he thinks. He can be pretty persuasive and it is difficult to argue with his logic. The Adobe folks read these forums, yes, but they read the feature requests and look to see how many customers want certain things done. Not a bad way to prioritize. Now that more FCP people will be submitting requests, there is a good chance that you will see more features that you want.
So, while it may be obvious to you, it isn't obvious to Adobe until the masses speak. I suggest that you might want to consider being a rabble rouser, getting like minded people to put in the same requests. That is probably the best way to get what you want.
As for going in reverse.... I think that if you have never had some of these things, they are not important to you. They are not all like adding reverse. Some are but some of these are like the tailfin on the 1959 Caddilac. The higher the better back then. But are they necessary?

  • How can I transfer my itunes library edits to my computer music

I got my PC music that I transfer to my itunes library, and I do a lot of editing of my itunes music and I would like it to automaticly edit my PC music so that when I lose my itunes music I could go back to my PC and download it again without having to re-edit the same songs over n over again. In the past it automaticly would do it but not no more, I don't know what I got to do to change or authorize itunes to edit my PC music?

Ok, great - now how do I do this without an external hard drive or LAN? It seems I made the mistake of updating to iTunes 10.4 and lost the option to backup to a disc. Also, one of the reasons I am transferring to a new computer is my old one is an old, very slow PC, so having to do things like reinstall iTunes 10.3 to get the backup to disc option back is very time consuming and frustrating. I also purchased iTunes Match in the hopes that I could access all my files from the new computer that way, but I can't figure out how to access it from the new computer.
Is there a reason why this has to be so difficult? Didn't Apple used to be really good at making user-friendly products?

  • How to edit frame-by-frame and export results in H264?

I wish to edit some videos and then export them in H264 so I can use them on a website.
I have tried to edit with iMovie 08 but can only edit second-by-second. I want to edit frame-by-frame ie to the millisecond. And it appears that iMovie 08 does not export in H264.
I have looked at iMovie 11 which has a Precision Editor which would work to edit as I want but for that I would have to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard which I don't want. It would export H264.
I also have QuickTime Player 7 Pro but that too seems to edit only by the second not by the frame; it does however seem to produce H264
How can I edit these videos precisely and produce H264? Is there another application which would work better (and doesn't cost a fortune).
    Thanks for any ideas

  • Which media server protocols enable frame accurate seeking and frame stepping in players?

    Hi,
... and thank you in advance for taking the time to respond. I am evaluating different protocls for different client platforms, and I'd like to know the following...
Which media server protocols enable frame accurate seeking and frame stepping in players? (It appears that RTMP does. However, what about HDS? What about HLS?)
Why is it that some do and some don't? (Intuitively, this would seem to be more an issue of the player than the protocol, but then maybe it has something to do with the buffers and the specific information passed to the client.)
For those protocols that do support frame accurate seeking and frame stepping in players, does the addition of Access DRM protection have any effect? (Intuitively, I would say no, but then maybe there are configuration changes needed in AMS to make it work.)
    Thanks!

I searched for a DVD player with a jog shuttle -- and you're right. They're all but impossible to find! I havent' found one made in the past 5 years!
I don't know of any way you could accomplish the same thing with software either.
Most DVD players have slow-motion and frame-by-frame features. (Even my cheap $40 Toshiba.) That may be the closest to it.

  • Can the Flash Player do frame accurate seeking when using the HDS protocol?

    Hi all,
... and thanks in advance for taking the time to respond. I've been playing with different media serving protocols, and I have a couple of questions.
    1. Can the Flash Player do frame accurate seeking when media is served via the HDS protocol? (I know it works  using RTMP)
    2. If it does work, is it impacted in any way if I also use Access DRM-Core or Access DRM-Professional? (I want stronger DRM protection than simple Access Protected Streaming)
    Thanks!

Hello Simona_83.  Try downloading Google Chrome (it's free).  Install Flash Player via Chrome, and use Chrome as your browser.  This is the only thing that worked for me after over a month of trying everything under the sun to get Flash Player working again.  You'll have to use Chrome as your browser in order to have Flash Player capability, but so what.  It works.  If it works for you as it works for me, you will have Youtube again; you just have to access Youtube via Chrome.  Don't waste hours of your life trying to get Flash Player to work any other way.  Believe me, I wasted hours upon hours off and on over the course of a month trying to get Flash Player installed and operating.

  • What is this error: "The item is not on an edit frame boundary."?

I exported XML from one computer and imported into another and got the message: Final Cut Pro encountered an error importing the XML file.  The error log says: "The item is not on an edit frame boundary (durations+"80679599/3000000s": /fcpxml{1}/project{1} /clip[934]/video[1]/@duration).  What does this mean???? I searched discussions and found no mention of an error or anything else having to do with edit frame foundaries.
The library involved was copied to another computer, the project edited, and exported as XML back to the original computer.  With the above error message.  All the event clips came across fine, but the 4 projects that were in the Event did not import back to the original computer.
    Both computers:
    Mac OS 10.9.2
    FCPX 10.1.1
Source material in "Original" H.264 format.  Edit format is native format.
Does this mean I have to use all I frame format to use XML import/export??
    thanks

  • Frame accurate 16:9 to 4:3 transistion

    hi all,
    I need your help!
For testing purposes I need to create a stream that is frame accurate for that at exactly 5 mins into a stream the video will go from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio and then after x mins goes to 16:9 Pan Scan and then after x mins go to 4:3 and then after x mins go to 16:9.
Ultimately this will have to be turned into an accurate packetised transport stream (MPEG-2 PAL) will transistioing aspect ratio.
My colleague has suggested creating in FCP 6 the clips individual and placing them as a playlist in Quicktime player (and pumping out to an external MPEG-2 encoder), but I really want to have timestamping and timecode also on the video (I know I want the world)
BTW: I have been cheeky and cross posted on FCP and Compressor forums
    Kind Regards for any help

I do not believe that you can mix frame sizes - which is essentially what you're asking - within a single stream. It's either a 16:9 frame (with 4:3 material pillarboxed) or a 4:3 frame (with 16:9 material letterboxed).
As suggested (but without ever having attempted this myself), you could use some type of playlist function to slice the movie segments together. But I'm not sure that you as the content author can enable that - it would be up to the broadcaster/distributor to do that. Even then, frame size isn't typically a variable that allowed to change from segment to segment.

  • Edit frame in external editor?

Sorry for the newbie question. Is there an easy way to edit frames in an external editor (Photoshop, whatever)?
I have some video take from film that has some scratches I'd like to clean up. It's only a handful of frames, so it would be easy to do in a photo editor. I suppose I could export a frame or frame sequence, edit them, and import them back in. The problem is that I'd need to match up the stills to their original frames, make the the right length, etc. Not impossible, but certainly not simple. I'm hoping there's an easier way?
By the way, I tried the manual "object remover" method, which involves a cloned clip placed over the clip in question, and cropping/transforming to cover the scratch with a section from somewhere else, but in this particular instance there's no easy place to get a cover-up section that matches. (Hope that made sense.)
    Ideas?
    Dan

Thanks for the reply. I have SliceX, but as I mentioned in my post, for these particular videos, there's no good area from which to clone. I suppose it would be possible, but *very* tedious to get the selection that exact. Perhaps I'm just not coordinated enough.
I've discovered a workflow which works well for me - easier than I thought it would be. I'll show it here, in case it helps anyone else:
Isolate the frames in question by using the Blade tool and separating them into their own section - this makes lining up the result frames easier when you paste them back in.
Export the section as a frame sequence.
Import the frames in iPhoto. I know, this sounds silly, but actually, iPhoto's Touchup tool is awesome for tasks like this. Way better (to me) than Adobe Photoshop Elements.
In iPhoto, when you start editing a frame, it has a strip at the bottom showing all the frames, and it's easy to switch between frames. This makes it easy to verify your touchups against the other frames.
When done, I choose to drag the files from iPhoto to a folder. I suppose you could also import them inside FCPX from its reference to iPhoto - but this seemed easier to me. Perhaps I'm wrong - I will try the other way next time.
iPhoto does reduce the image quality slightly - I'm guessing this, since the file sizes are much smaller. But for what I'm working on, it's not noticeable.
I drag the photos back into the Event, and into the original timeline.
I select all of them, hit Ctrl+D and change the duration to 1 frame.
Voila! Done. Not so hard after all. I'm amazed that iPhoto makes this so easy.
The only thing that iPhoto does that makes this a slightly longer process, is that when you switch from frame to frame, it resets the Zoom & Pan, and un-selects the Touchup tool. Not that big a deal, but if you've zoomed and panned to a specific place, it would be nice if all the frames opened up the same way, so you can check your results against the other frames. I wonder if Adobe Photoshop Elements does this - I'll have to check. As I said, not the end of the world. But *so* close to perfection...
All in all, I can remove a scratch from, say, 15 frames, pretty quickly. I'll have to time myself next time I do this, now that I've got the workflow down.

  • FCPX XML import error "edit frame boundary"

    Hello,
I'm attemting to import an XML file into FCPX from Davinci Resolve and am continually getting an error log message which contains the following: "the item is not on an edit frame boundary." I'm working with raw CDNG files from a 5D Mark III in Resolve and trying to export quicktime files in a roundtrip workflow.
I'm working on a 23.976 timeline and everything appears to be set up correctly in Resolve.  It exports the quicktime files and the XML file.  When I import the XML into FCPX, the error code appears (see below).  The new clips appear in a new event and a project is created, but the project settings have changed from "1920 x 818" to "1280 x 720" and the frame rate has changed from 23.976 to 60p. These settings cannot be modified in the project settings.  I can see the new timeline but it doesn't play normally.  I think it has something to do with a framerate mismatch or timecode problem, but I'm not sure, I've checked everything I can think of.  Incidentally, the other side of the workflow (exporting XML from FCPX to Resolve) works just fine.  Really hoping to be able to take a graded timeline back into Final Cut for finishing.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Hi,
You open XML file you will see xml file will contain many task tag <Tag>
    <Task>
    <UID>1</UID>
    <ID>1</ID>
    <Name>task1</Name>
    <Active>1</Active>
    <Manual>1</Manual>
    <Type>0</Type>
            <IsNull>0</IsNull>
Every task will start with  <Task> and task Name will come as <Name>task1</Name>. You can find all the line with <Name>task1</Name> then you can copy all the task in excel truncate <Name> and <Name>
then you will have only name of the task then in the 2nd column of the excel you can paste tasks from MPP fiel then you can check easily which task is not present in the xml file.

  • Frame accurate editing help required.

Is there no iMovie 11 Help section that instructs you how to edit a movie (cut footage out you no longer require etc.), preferably to the frame.
The Get Started section of help jumps from Lesson 3 adding video to Lesson 4 Enhancing your project.
    Is it me?

Thanks, thumbnail slider helps but actual frame editing seems a bit hit and miss, sometimes works sometimes doesn't (sometimes cuts 2 frames rather than 1), I found it easier (and more accurate) to cut a few frames away from where i wanted and then select an individual frame and move this using the Left and Right cursor keys before deleting the unwanted frame(s) using Cmd+X to cut selected frames.
BTW I eventually found some editing help in Browse help (there is none in the Get started section, although it is demonstrated in a video in lesson 3, 'Add video to your project') but it was well hidden!
Browse help/Create an iMovie project/Trim video clips/Trim unwanted frames from a video clip.
Why they hide it here i'll never know, surely everyone wants to trim their video, or is it just me,haha.

  • Xml import not frame accurate-

    hello,
i exported a xml 5 from final cut 7 of a music video
    3 minutes long
imported this file into premiere. at first glance it seems to have imported the complete project, including all the layers, clips and transitions.
but, then i noticed the sync was off.
i exported a .mov from the fcp project and layed it over the premier project and the whole thing is off. the first frame doesn't even match.
the sequence settings are the same. 24p. the media is prores hq. the audio is aiff.
    The problems are these:
-the audio of the xml import and the .mov import is also not in sync (perhaps premier doesn't work well with aiff
-a lot of the shots have been frame blended. there are shots at 23.98 and 24fps in the fcp project. premier is using the same source footage, so in item properties the 23.98 clips will say they are 23.98, and in the viewer they will look normal- but playing out of the sequence anything with 23.98 has this ghosty frameblended look - perhaps it is being played out of the sequence at 24fps instead of 23.98. shots from the fcp project that were in 24fps are replicated frame accurately.
the reason i have both framerates in the fcp project is because there were some
after replacing the aiff i could get the project in much better sync.
but there doesn't seem to be a solution for the frame blending problem. any ideas?
my purpose for moving from fcp to premiere is to finally arrive in ae.
the good news is that, once importing the sequence into ae, this frame blending goes away and the shots are again played as they should be in ae.
i am going to continue finishing the fx and editing in ae - crossing my fingers that the sync holds together in the end.
i was wondering if it would be easier to go back to premier from ae for the final qc to make sure everything syncs and edits together properly - but i'm not sure that is going to work. i see there is some functionality for replacing clips with ae comps.
in any event, i've written a saga here and now its time to get back to work.
