If you're using sudo in the Terminal, it is recognizing your keystrokes even though it might appear it's not.

  • Problem updating 10.6.8 SWUpdate server to host Lion updates

Anyone else having problems following the directions in KB article "Mac OS X Server v10.6: Hosting Software Updates for OS X Lion or Lion Server" <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4771?viewlocale=en_US>?
It's basically modifying a plist and a conf file, but when I look at MY .conf file I don't find the specified text to change? I've even checked the previous version of the file, and don't find the text.
    TFA says:
In step 5, you will need root access to update the file /etc/swupd/swupd.conf. To be safe, make a backup copy of the file before editing it. Locate the following line near the end of the file:
        RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} Darwin/11
Edit the following line to read:
        RewriteRule ^/index\.sucatalog$ /index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
But I'm not finding either of these lines in my own file.
Anyone have luck with this? Anyone run into the same issue?
    TIA for any help!
    -Nick

Hmm, I'm having more of a problem now. Having re-started SUS, /etc/swupd/swupd.conf contains the required lines, so I stopped SUS again, edited swupd.conf as indicated and restarted SUS. All seems good, except when I checked back, swupd.conf has reverted back to how it was prior to my edit. IOW, the rewrite rules etc are there, but Darwin/10 and Darwin/11 are identical again with no mention of lion.
I've repeatedly edited the file, but every time SUS starts, it reverts the file. The swupd.conf.previous file actually contains the correct line, so looks like every time SUS starts it copies swupd.conf to swupd.conf.previous, but then creates a new swupd.conf based on something else.
I also edited /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SUServer.framework/Versions/A/Resources/swupd . conf to contain the correct line, but although it does seem to be retained, it doesn't help and /etc/swupd/swupd.conf ALWAYS reverts to the old incorrect line.
So, how worrying is this that Apple's own technical article on this subject is now wrong on 2 counts. First of all, swupd.conf is likely to initially not contain the line they are instructing us to modify and then if it does (because SUS has been restarted since they issued some update) editing the file is UTTERLY USELESS since starting SUS again just reverts the file. Sometimes I despair.
Anyway, SUS is obviously obtaining the file from somewhere else and writing /etc/swupd/swupd.conf on every start. So where is it getting it from? I cannot find any other instance of swupd.conf, so it's extracting it from something else. Anyone any idea where?

  • Unable to edit Hosts file in Win7 Home Prem 64bit.

Clean install.  Administrator account.  Unable to edit the permissions of the hosts file. There is one in the drivers\etc file, which I cannot edit. There is supposed to be one in %systemroot% \SysWOW64\drivers\etc   but there is no etc folder in the drivers folder.
Turned off DNS Server. gpedit.msc not found when calling it in "run".  This is the first time I've used 64bit anything, so a bit of a newb in that respect.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
As you would know, some of the Windows 7 users can’t save the host file how they like it. The host file itself will simply vanish what the user had done with it.
In my scenario, I was unable to fix this even after all the instructions provided in above posts. Hence, I have come up with my own idea and luckily it
    worked.<o:p></o:p>
For those users who experience this problem, here are the instructions to fix it.
First of all, you should have the administrative privileges to edit the host file. In normal case, if an admin user directly go to the host file in system 32 and add his preferences
and then save it, it should keep the changes. However, in some wicked scenarios, it will not. I had done a detailed research on this through all the available online forums and even contacted Microsoft several times with no luck.
So, here you go with a correct solution for this problem.
Note: If you are not comfortable with Windows OS and don’t know what you are doing, this process can mess up things.
Hence, do not attempt if you are not 100% sure you can make it.
    Login to an administrator account.
In the run command (Windows key + R) type, “control folders” and hit enter.
Click on the tab called view.
Select the radio button for Show hidden files, folders and drivers –ON.
Uncheck the ‘Hide extension for known file types-ON
Click on Apply and then OK.
Type “drivers” in run command and hit enter. It will take you to where the folder “drivers” located in System 32.
From the “drivers” folder, double click the folder named “etc.”
Now you can see the “host” file along with others.
Now, in the search area in start menu, type “notepad.exe” and open the notepad.exe as administrator. (In order to do this, you can right click on the notepad.exe shown and select
“Run as Administrator.” If UAC prompted, click YES/OK)
Now, you will have a notepad open with administrative privileges.
At the top left side of the notepad click on “file” and then select “Open.”
A box will appear which will allow you select the file to open. Carefully, navigate to the location where the “host” file is located. To do that, select the drive where you
installed Windows. If you have the Windows installed in C: select ‘Local Disk (C :)’ > Windows > System 32 > drivers > etc. At this point, you might not have another option to proceed or select from. The window would be empty. To proceed further,
select the option “All files” from the drop down menu which is located above the “Open” and “Cancel” button. You can now see all the files located in etc folder.
Select “hosts” from the menu and click on “Open.” Note: You can either click on open or double click on the file.
Now, you will have the host file information open in the notepad which you had already initiated before with administrative privileges.
Make whatever changes you as you wish. (Example: If you need to block a web site called
    www.block123.com you can type 127.0.0.1
www.block123.com right under the local hosts.
Make sure you do not change any other letters or characters which are already saved in host file.
This will completely mess up your computer. For more information on the information about host file, refer the Microsoft web site:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034 . If you
have accidently delete/edit anything from host file, please delete the complete information stored in host file and copy and paste the host file information from Microsoft which is appropriate for your Operating System.)
Click on “file” again and select “Save as” and save it in etc. If the path is showing correct to etc folder, save it to etc. If it is navigated to somewhere else, follow the
instructions provided above and select etc folder and then save it.
Now, go back to the actual host file location which is in System32 > Drivers > etc (You would have it already open if you had followed the instructions just like the way
    I have provided)
There you can see 2 host files. One which has already been there and the other one you just saved.
Among the two, one is called “hosts” and the ‘type’ would be ‘file.’ This is the original host file. The other which you have just saved will be named as “hosts.txt” with the
    file type as ‘Text Document.’
Right click on the original host file and select rename. You can even click on that file and press F2. This will enable the option to rename the file. Rename the original host
file as “hostold” and hit enter.
Now, select the second host file which we have saved as a text document and rename it as “hosts.” Make sure that you DELETE the .txt file extension in order to change the type
“Text Document” to “File” and hit enter.
Now, you have successfully saved the host file with your preferences.
You can now delete the file which we renamed as “hostold.”
We are done. You would need to do this process all over if you need to edit the host file again. I know it is difficult, however, it is our own requirement and we have to invest
    few minutes on this.
Enjoy your computer with a great feeling that you have finally edited the host file as per your wish and take it from here. Wish you luck.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Problem editing hosts file in Snow Leopard

I am having trouble editing my hosts file in Snow Leopard. Well, I can edit it fine, but the changes seem to give no effect whatsoever.
My hosts file looks like so:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    fe80::1%lo0 localhost
    127.0.0.1 localhost www.localhost.com
I cannot access localhost by entering '127.0.0.1' into my browser, nor can I access it by entering 'www.localhost.com'.
Firefox simply tells me either 'Unable to Connect' or 'The Connection was reset', respectively.
Is there something I am doing wrong?? I have been looking all over the internet all week and cannot see what I might be missing!
The only way I can connect to localhost is by visiting 'http://localhost:8888/'.
If it helps, I am running MAMP.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Never mind, I found out MAMP was using port 8888 instead of 80, so I reset it and now it works fine

  • Using Terminal to edit Hosts

This is probably a really basic question but I cannot seem to find the answer.
I wanted to add a local hosts entry so that I can see a Server which does not have a dns entry without having to use the ip address.
I have worked out where the hosts file is \private\etc and have finally managed to work out how to use VIM.
However - when I try to save the hosts file after editing it says it is read only.
I cannot work out how to change this - and if possible how to put back afterwards.
    Thank you.
    Macbook Pro 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

That file is owned by root, so you would have to edit and save it with root privileges. The easiest way to do this is to start vim using sudo ("su" stands for "super-user", so "sudo" refers to doing something as super-user, or root):
    sudo vim [filename]
It will prompt you for your password, then you should be able to edit the file.
BE CAREFUL with sudo - root access essentially gives you the ability to do anything to anything on your system, and you can inadvertently edit files that will render your system unusable (like deleting the kernel).
P.S. Always make a copy of the file first. Then if you mess it up, you can copy back the original.

  • Edit hosts file in WRVS4400N

    Hi all,
Just wondering if there's a hosts file (for setting DNS name to IP address association) in Linksys routers, specifically the WRVS4400N, that can be edited? I'm living in an area where certain DNS entries are high-jacked, such as dyndns.org, and as such I can't use DDNS unless I set the host's IP address manually - ideally I'd like the Linksys router to do DDNS.
    Thanks in advance!
    Mike.

if your internet provider is messing around with the dns service that it provides then stop using their dns service completely and use OpenDNS instead
    http://www.opendns.com
basically, this means using the publicly available dns servers from OpenDNS (see below) instead of the ones that your isp has.
    208.67.222.222 and
    208.67.220.220
Fill those in in the router wan connection setup page -> dns servers to use fields, give the router a normal reboot (just to make sure it uses those... but sometimes is not needed) and you're all set to go.

  • EDITING HOSTS - Why I do not find the file on MacBookPro

I am not so expert with Unix.
I edited my Hosts file adding text from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm and it works well on my iMac greatly reduceing the unwanted popups.
Now I try to do the same on my MacBookPro but it seems impossible to find the Hosts file and even Private and etc folders... any suggestion ??
Second question: which is the risk of a wrong editing ? I always keep a copy of the original Hosts file. If there is even the risk of boot made impossible it should always be possible to enter the HD from a second Mac via FW and change the Hosts file or am I wrong ?
    Thanks

I edited my Hosts file adding text from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm and it works well on my iMac greatly reduceing the unwanted popups.
I've found the worst pop-up offender is Flash.
I would suggest trying "ClickToFlash" <http://clicktoflash.com/> on Safari.
    FlashBlock <http://flashblock.mozdev.org/> for Firefox.
Actually FlashBlock exists for several browsers (Google is your friend).
A Flash blocking add-on will still allow you to play Flash, you just have to click on the blank image with the Start Icon before the add-on will load the Flash content.
As an added bonus, keeping Flash from running by default has a tendency to extend your laptop battery time between charges.
After blocking Flash, the browsers built-in pop-up blockers should get most of the rest, and if there is a really offensive Ad, you can also use an Ad blocking add-on as mentioned by etresoft. I use one of those as well, but ever since I installed a Flash blocking add-on, I have not really needed to use the Ad blocking add-on. There are several Ad blocking add-ons for Safari as well as other browsers. Try searching MacUpdate.com as well as Google.
With respect to editing /etc/hosts. If you are careful, and as you said you did this before, they you can most likely do it again. However, I would point out that it is a pain to keep updating the /etc/hosts file as you find yet another offending Ad or pop-up. Plus maybe someday you find you need to visit that site (OK, maybe that is stretching it), but what if you do? The static nature of /etc/hosts means you would be blocked, and most likely never think it was because of /etc/hosts. This is also why I suggest using a Flash blocking add-on, and if you find you need it an Ad blocking add-on.
As far as dangers, you could loose localhost capabilities (actually very useful), or mess up DNS lookups. So it is a very good idea to keep the original around just in case. Another danger would be editing /etc/hosts with the wrong utility, and accidentally turning it into a Rich Text format file, or (yuck) a Microsoft Word document nano (anyone could use it), vim (steep learning curve), emacs (an operating system pretending to be an editor), TextWrangler (GUI), Fraise (GUI) are all safe text editors.

  • Single Edition Hosting Fees

My understanding of the single edition publishing process is that I use DPS to convert my .folio file to an App that I then submit the App to App store using my Developer credentials.
My question is where is the App hosted and who pays for the bandwidth for downloads from the App store?  I have not sold Apps in the past, however, my understanding is that for typical Apps, they are hosted by Apple.  However, iPad folios are not typical in that they can be very large versus a normal App.  Must the app be hosted on a third-party server?
Thanks for helping me clarify this.
    Jeff

Apple hosts the single-issue app you create. You pay Adobe $395 to create a single-issue app, and you pay Apple $99/year to be a developer. No download fees.
