"Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3″ a JPEG?

Hey, I have a problem: when I try to "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3″, and select "Edit a Copy" It doesnt open in Photoshop CS3 a .PSD file: it opens a .JPG file.
I'm viewing an JPEG, and I have selected to copy as PSD.
Is that ok? Comments? Thanks!

To my way of thinking, this is correct behavior. When it's opened in PS, it *is* a JPEG to start with. You do your edits, then you SAVE as whatever you want. If you want it back to a JPEG, Save as, otherwise, you can save as PSD or TIFF and you won't have lost anything due to re-compression.
Converting a JPEG to PSD only to open it immediately in PS does nothing positive, and is just an extra step.

    http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/14/adobe-photoshop-cs3-at-a-glance/
Even more content out there now on the home page of PhotoshopNews.com

I haven't been able to download CS3 yet, but the Martin Evening pdf (thanks for the link!) has what looks like a piece of great news buried in it:
"For example, before you first had to create an empty new document with the exact pixel dimensions before you could place an image (such as a raw file) as a Smart Object. With Photoshop CS3, you can now place a raw capture file as a Smart Object layer in a single step."
If I understand this right, it means that the functionality of the old Dr Brown Place-a-Matic script is now available from Aperture. We can -- or this makes me hope we can -- send a RAW from Aperture to PSCS3 for editing, and then Place the same image, perhaps twice, as a Smart Object, edit away, and when we Save get the whole edited image back in Aperture without going through the Finder.
I used to use this (from Bridge) all the time to double-expose RAW shots: adjust the sky to one exposure and the ground to another, masking to get both into the final image, all without messing with the pixels of the RAW image. I've missed it. Whoopee.

  • Edit in Adobe Photoshop CC 2014

When in Lightroom 5 and I select "edit in Adobe Photoshop CC 2014" it doesn't create a copy in tif or psd format (or jpg format) like it did in previous versions.  A box use to pop up allowing me to set the file type, color space etc then in Lightroom I would get a second file (filename-edit.xxx) and photoshop would open that file for editing.  I am very use to this workflow from my previous versions of LR 4 and cs3...  Any help is appreciated!

By the time the image is open in Photoshop is no longer raw image data. You are not working on the raw file in Photoshop. The only difference in your workflow is when that TIF file is saved. Since Lightroom and Photoshop are in sync the saving of that secondary file is postponed until the end of the Photoshop session. But any work you do in Photoshop is saved to the TIF file. The only difference is the point at which the file is saved. So you really don't have to change your workflow at all. Photoshop, by itself, cannot do anything with the raw image data.
To expand a little further, Photoshop cannot edit raw image data. When an image is sent from Lightroom to Photoshop, Camera Raw is used to interpret the adjustments that have been made in Lightroom. The image is then converted to a standard RGB image. When Photoshop and Lightroom are "in sync" that converted image is sort of "suspended" in Photoshop. You make the adjustments using Photoshop, and then the image is saved to a TIF or PSD file depending on your Lightroom preferences. When Lightroom is newer than Photoshop/Camera Raw then Lightroom will give you the choice of creating the TIF image that includes all of the Lightroom adjustments, or to open the image in Photoshop. If you choose the latter, then the image will be opened without creating the TIF, but all of the adjustments you made in Lightroom may not be applied because you are using an older Camera Raw. That may or may not create a problem. Something that you will have to decide.

  • Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS without saving the file

When I do "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS" of a RAW file, LR saves a TIFF or PSD file first, then opens it with PS CS. LR should give an option to forward the picture to PS CS through some in-memory inter-process communication, as opposed to saving the photo from LR and re-open it from PS CS. It might be much faster.
In case, I understand LR would not give the option to stack the edited file with the RAW file.

    >all I want to do is run an action in PS that converts to jpg with a particular filter applied.
Then turn it into a droplet (you do know how to do that?) and put it in the Exprt Actions Folder and call for it in a Export Preset set for the JPEG you want.
LR will then on Export run the droplet and save to the folder of your choice.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 printing to an HP Pro B9180

I am trying to print a borderless project. The preview looks perfect but when printed it cuts 1/8th of an inch off the top. I have reinstalled Adobe Photoshop CS3, reinstalled the printer and spent 2 hours with an HP tech online and no fixes yet. Windows Vista Home Premium is the O/S.
    Any suggestions, thanks Jan

    Hi Jan,
Don't know if this will help or not, but it may be worth a look. Russell Brown has a video tutorial on printing with CS3 to the HP Photosmart B9180 here:

You'll have to scroll about 1/3 down the page to get to the section entitled

    Good luck.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended Trial

Hi guys, I've recently downloaded Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. When I select the trial period for 30 days instead of buying the product, it says that Adobe cannot continue and it's having trouble loading the trial. I reinstalled it and restarted my computer, like it said, and nothing worked. Please help, I cannot afford Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended right now, and I do not support piracy at all.

I've tried to install the program from a different directory, I think my windows installer is crashing every time i try to install it, maybe I find a working hotfix for it.
I followed these steps when i tried to install ps:

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended freezes on startup under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit - No splash screen

I installed my licensed copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended today as part of my install a bunch of software after a reinstall of Windows (due to viruses).  I did a completely fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  I've used Photoshop CS3 Extended for quite a while now so I know what to expect on startup but it was previously installed under Windows XP Professional (32-bit). Figured I would give Windows 7 a chance this time around.
Google searches aren't turning up anything.  When I attempt to start the application, I get a window with the title "Adobe Photoshop CS3" (no "Extended" - I seem to recall the title changes later) and the toolbar appears.  However, no splash screen appears and no Product Activation wizard appears - the application simply freezes on an empty frame and a toolbar.  I've tried running Photoshop as Administrator (right-click, "Run As Administrator"), but nothing changed there.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling.  I tried upgrading to CS3 10.0.1.  Nothing works.  The application simply freezes before it gets anywhere.
I tried calling Adobe Support since this technically falls under installation issues but their phone support systems are down today.  Go figure.
Edit:  I hooked into Photoshop with the Visual Studio debugger and every single thread is executing some variation of WaitForSingleObject() or WaitForMultipleObjects().  The main thread is "executing" somewhere in AdobeLM_libFNP.dll (at address 09619d81 - if I had debugging symbols for CS3, I could provide a function).  There are nine threads "running" at the point the freeze occurs - but all of them are technically suspended due to the functions they are executing - and one thread is in a suspended state.

My Visual Studio analysis was far more informative.  All threads are hung inside of WaitForSingleObject() and WaitForMultipleObjects() calls and the DLL in question appears to be FlexNet-related.  I did forget to mention that I also even manually started the FlexNet service in case, for some strange reason, Photoshop was waiting for it to start.  That also did not work.
(And there is nothing in the Action Center control panel either despite the message saying there might be more information there.)
Edit:  The timestamp above might be a little odd-looking.  I didn't originally see anything in Event Viewer until I clicked the first button to send an Error Report.  Mostly I just skipped that part of killing a process.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 collapse each time it load a big file

I was loading a big file of photos from iMac iPhoto to Adobe Photoshop CS3 and it keep collapsing, yet each time I reopen photoshop it load the photos again and collapse again. is there a way to stop this cycle?

I don't think that too many users here actually use iPhoto (even the Mac users)
However, Google is your friend. A quick search came up with some other non-Adobe forum entries:
.... but the golden rule of iPhoto is NEVER EVER MESS WITH THE IPHOTO LIBRARY FROM OUTSIDE IPHOTO.In other words, anything you might want to do with the pictures in iPhoto can be done from *within the program,* and that is the only safe way to work with it. Don't go messing around inside the "package" that is the iPhoto Library unless you are REALLY keen to lose data, because that is exactly what will happen.
.....everything you want to do to a photo in iPhoto can be handled from *within the program.* This INCLUDES using a third-party editor, and saves a lot of time and disk space if you do this way:
    1. In iPhoto's preferences, specify a third-party editor (let's say Photoshop) to be used for editing photos.
    2. Now, when you right-click (or control-click) a photo in iPhoto, you have two options: Edit in Full Screen (ie iPhoto's own editor) or Edit with External Editor. Choose the latter.
    3. Photoshop will open, then the photo you selected will automatically open in PS. Do your editing, and when you save (not save as), PS "hands" the modified photo back to iPhoto, which treats it exactly the same as if you'd done that stuff in iPhoto's own editor and updates the thumbnail to reflect your changes. Best of all, your unmodified original remains untouched so you can always go back to it if necessary.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 has stopped working: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.

I recently purchased a new desktop computer and installed Adobe CS3 Master Edition on it and I get the following error:
Adobe Photoshop CS3 has stopped working: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
Out of the entire suite of tools only Photoshop will not launch. The weird thing is i also had the same Adobe programs installed on my laptop and I have not made any installation updates to that machine and i am getting the same error. I have always installed the same software on my two home machines with no problem until now. Any help is appreciated.

    You'll probably going to have to uninstall, then re-install the application; but you need to provide a lot more information;
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
Note that this is boilerplate text.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster).
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too.

  • Windows 7   " Adobe Photoshop CS3 has stopped working "

Okay let me stir up a whole new kettle of fish WINDOWS 7 VS CS3 PHOTOSHOP.
I have Windows 7 Ultimate Edition 64bit. I am running (or trying) CS3 Master suite. Most all progams function except Photoshop. I try to load it and I get "Adobe Photoshop CS3 has stopped working" and then there is no fix and no help. Photoshop ran on Vista 64bit just fine.
I'm curious if anyone else is having this same issue? If so have you found any clue as to the issue?
I get the feeling this could be a conflict with a windows 7 update or something?
    Any fixes?

Try right clicking on the PS CS3 icon and run as admin. I can tell you that people have a lot of problems in running PS CS3 in Windows 7 and had to download the Windows XP virtual and run CS3 in virtual mode.
Anyways here is a link to the suite forums. They may have a better answer there for you.

    > but the part about DNG has convinced me to dive deeper in it and give it a go
When working in a Bridge/Camera Raw/Photoshop workflow, I tend to ingest the actual native raw files, do initial selects and gross edits and basic metadata work via templates and THEN do the conversion to DNG. I'll use the DNG as my working files and the original raws as an archive. I tend to do this more with studio shoots. I tend to use Lightroom when I'm on the road.
When working in Lightroom first, I tend to ingest and convert to DNG upon ingestion (when in the road working on a laptop) while using the backup copyusually working on a pair of external FW drives one for working DNG files and 1 for BU of the original raws. Then, when I get back to the studio I make sure I write to XMP and export the new shoot as a catalog and import into my studio copy of Lightroom. Then I'll also cache the newly imported images in Bridge as well so I can get at the image either in Bridge or Lightroom.
It's a bit of a chore now since I do work in Camera Raw a lot (well, DOH, I had to to do the book!) but I also keep all my digital files in a Lightroom catalog which is now up to about 74K...
Then, depending on what I'll need to do, I'll either work out of LR or Bridge/Camera Raw...
If I'm doing a high-end final print, I generally process out of Camera Raw as a Smart Object and stack multiple layers of CR processed images...if I'm working on a batch of images I'll work out of Lightroom since the workflow seems to suit me better.
In either event, I've found DNG to be better than native raws with sidecar files.

  • Adobe photoshop CS3 versus adobe photoshop lightroom 2.3

I already own adobe photoshop CS3. Is it worthwhile to get adobe photoshop lightroom 2.3? Is it easier to use?

You can check out some of the free Lightroom tutorial videos here
    http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/lightroom/articles/lir2am_videotutorials.html
to get a sense of how workflow goes in Lightroom, and what Lightroom can do. I also agree that taking the free trial is going to give you a better sense of whether Lightroom will meet your specific needs than any answers you'll get here.
Lightroom is considered to be more newbie friendly than Photoshop. All arts editing programs, as far as I'm concerned, if they're any good, have a learning curve to master the features, and Lightroom is no exception, but LR's learning curve does tend to be less steep than Photoshop's for many users.
Many forum members who do have extensive experience with both programs have posted here that they now do the great majority or all of their editing with at least most of their images in Lightroom. Photoshop still has things it can do that Lightroom cannot do or cannot do as well, so it's not uncommon for people to post here that with an image that needs something exceptional, they'll still go over to Photoshop and put in some heavy duty editing time there. Adobe has made bouncing back and forth between the two programs easy. But often with Lightroom, you can make an image quite good with just a minute or two of edits, once you quickly get the hang of the program, and it offers many advantages in organization of large blocks of images.

White Lines appear on Images in Adobe Photoshop CS3
Recently discover that on three different computers, while editing images in Adobe Photoshop CS3, white lines would appear on some of the images.
For example changing a image from a .jpg to a .psd or size, or enchantment features, the white lines would appear on the image.
The lines did not appear on any of the printed images, any suggestions.
    Monitor: Sony Trintron Multiscan G4110
    Computer: Mac G5

    >The lines did not appear on any of the printed images,
Although it is odd that three computers exhibit the same problem, and unless you can provide other coincidences (same files, same monitor, etc.), I agree. The video card is typically the culprit IF the image anomalies don't print and if they move about with each image resizing or opening of a specific image. Check to see if it's properly seated and connected. Same for monitor cable. Try swapping in another card.
One other thought: as this is a CRT monitor, what happens if you change the resolution and refresh rate? Are you using a recommended combination for that monitor?
