Edit in iMovie

I want to re-edit a movie but after going iMovie>garage band>iTunes, it's in .MOV container.
iMovie will not recognize. What settings I need, to convert again for iMovie in MPEGSTreamclip by not doing a re-compress ?
the format is :
Data Size: 669.42 MB
Bit Rate: 3.97 Mbps
Video Tracks:
H.264, 960 × 540, 25 fps, 3.78 Mbps
Audio Tracks:
MPEG-4 Audio stereo, 44.1 kHz, 195 kbps

And how can I delete the track ?
There are two basic methods of deleting extraneous tracks of data:
1) The first is rather "hit or miss" and basically relies on track type compatibility with the various file containers. An MOV file container can contain up to 99 tracks of data that may consist of one or more tracks of audio, video, image, text, timecode, sprite, "Tween", etc. content. Take an iPhoto slideshow exported as an MPEG4/AAC file for instance. It will not import to iMovie '08 because it contains a "Tween" track. However, since the MPEG-4 video and the AAC audio is compatible with an MP4 file container but the "Tween" track is not, placing the audio/data in an MPr container using the MPEG Streamclip (free) "Save As..." option will automatically "strip" the target file of the "Tween" track because it is incompatible with the file container and cannot be copied to the new file. This, in effect, is one way to delete the "Tween" track without re-compressing the data itself. Unfortunately, this method only works if the audio and video content is compatible with the MP4 file container and your extraneous track is not compatible with the MP4 file container.
2) The preferred method would be to use the QT Pro Player application. This will work with any QT compatible file. The basic strategy here is to simply open the file in the QT Pro Player, open the "Properties" window, select the track you wiah to delete, and then press the "Delete" button in upper, left-hand corner of the "Properties" window. Further, This application will also allow you analyze which tracks are and are not compatible with iMovie '08. In this case the strategy is simply to extract the video track, save the new player created, and then try importing it to iMovie '08. If it imports, the video content is compatible with iMovie '08 and if it won't import, then it isn't. Thereafter, you can successively extract other data tracks and add them to your extracted video file, save the result, and again try to import the newly created/saved file. Once aga, if it imports the newly added track is iMovie '08 compatible. It it isn't, then you can go back and eliminate the incompatible track from your "test file" and continue adding extracted tracks until all of the original movie tracks have been determined to be compatible/incompatible and you are left with a test file that is completely compatible with iMovie '08 (with the possible exception of Apple Animation and/or Apple Video compressed video tracks which are know to be import and edit compatible but cannot be exported correctly from iMovie '08).
I do not want to delete any track, only want to insert a small movie in it. What should I do ? Export to MPG4 in mpegtraemclip ? What settings I will need without re-compress ? the source is H.264, 960 x 540, Millions AAC, Stereo (L R), 44,100 kHz
It depends on what you mean by insert here. If you are referring to the inserting of a "window-in-window" effect, then neither MPEG Streamclip not iMovie '08 will work since neither has movie layer/compositing capabilities. If you are referring to the insertion of a clip into a cut/splitting of your file, then this can be done in QT Pro or MPEG Streamclip, but not in GarageBand which only allows the presence of a single video/podcast track at a time or iMovie '08 without either deleting the problem track or re-compressing the file which you say you are not willing to do. This process does not usually require re-compression as files of differing content can be merged and saved in the MOV file container and in this case the strategy is focused on the correct placement (frame level inserting) and not the compression formats involved. Unfortunately, the work flow depends, to some extent, on which application you want to use, so I will not go into details at this time.
Of course, "noticeable" is a relative term and that is why I tried to be more specific and mentioned the "average viewer." I'm sure a videophile could tell the difference.
Am sure most of us here agree with you on this point.

  • Importing Video from DVD to Edit in iMovie?

I need to import video from a DVD to edit in iMovie. What's the best way to go about this?
    Thanks,
    Ted
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Also own an iBook, G3 500mhz, 10gb drive

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • How can I edit an iMovie project created on one machine on a different one?

I created an iMovie on one MacBook, and want a colleague to edit it.
I created a dropbox folder, moved all the files there; i can see them on the other Mac, but the project doesn't show up in the project window in iMovie on the other Mac and I can't open it there by browsing to it in Finder...
    Can anyone help?

I think you can transfer an iMovie for iOS project from the iPad and edit it on iMovie on the Mac. This works fine.
However, you cannot start a movie on iMovie for the Mac and transfer it to iMovie for the iPad.
    Think of it this way.
Say that iMovie for the Mac has 1000 features*, and iMovie for the iPad has 400 features*. These 400 features map one to one to an equivalent iMovie for Mac feature. Because there is a good mapping, you can transfer and edit.
But if you go the other way, iMovie for Mac has 600 features for which there is no corresponding feature in iMovie for iPad or iPhone. So there is no way to edit an iMovie for Mac project on the iPad.
    * I made these numbers up for illustration purposes.

  • Need to convert .m4v video to be editable in iMovie '09. Driving me insane!

I am new to Macs as a whole, and have only owned my MacBook Pro for a month, now. I am skilled in iMovie '06, however, as it was a program I used at school for three years. I made some videos for my media class using iMovie '06 that I then exported to iDVD and burned. The original videos/files are at school. All I have are the DVDs. I'd like to put these videos online. I know how to use HandBrake to rip the video file off the DVD. For videos ten minutes or less, I've been able to use the .m4v file to upload to YouTube. However, I have three videos that clock in around 17 minutes, which YouTube rejects. All I want to do is open the files in iMovie and cut them in half. I know where I want to cut, and I don't want to do any editing of any kind.
iMovie won't open .m4v files, however. So I don't know what to do. What program should I use to convert the .m4v video file to a format iMovie will open and allow me to splice the video?
Is HandBrake a program for that and I'm just using it wrong?
Or do I have to choose a whole 'nother program to rip the video file off the DVD.
In short: these are my works, I want to know what FREE program to use to rip them from the DVD and be able to open them in iMovie '09 to cut them in half, or, which program to use to convert .m4v into a format readable by iMovie '09.
Please tell me in idiot's terms. I'm not that proficient with video editing or computers, so I need it laid out clear and simple.
    Thanks!

an m4v file can be renamed to mov!!
First try that.. if you can play it your done. if you can not download perian.
If perian can't.. then you can buy quicktime pro.
I own quicktime pro and bough perian to support the video that quicktime pro didn't. When I convert avchd video from my camcorder on my G5 to something editable in imovie I use ffmpeg and also handbrake. handbrake created m4v files.
All I do is rename them and Imovie can read them in.

  • Is there a way to open and edit my iMovie HD files with iMovie '09 and later versions?

I am getting ready to update an older iMac from Tiger to Mountain Lion. (Long overdue, I know) I have several files that I created using iMovie HD. After I update, will the new versions of iMovie be able to open and edit my iMovie HD files?

I don't think that iMovie 11 is backwards compatible with iMovie HD 6.
If you still have the install disks for iMovie Hd 6 (iLife 6) you can keep it alongside the newer version:
Happily this is easily achieved, but it has to be done backwards.
Delete iMovie 11 (just drag it to the trash). Now install iMovie 6 from the iLife 6 install disks. Update it to iMovie 6.0.3.
Now re-install iMovie 11. This automatically moves iMovie 6 into a folder it creates in your Applications folder called iMovie Previous Version.
    Then reinstall iMovie 11.
iMovie 6 works great with iDVD 7.
Now you have them both, and you can have both in the Dock as well.
Alternatively you could try this method, suggested by poster Uitech:
Open a terminal and type "touch /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iLife011.plist"
    (No quotes)
Install iMovieHD6 from the iLife 6 install disk.
This works with both Leopard and Snow Leopard Macs.

  • I have a lot of HD video on my hard drive that I eventually want to edit in iMovie, but just don't have the time now.  It is clogging up the computer, though.  How do I take the Hd clips off Mac for later editing?

I have a lot of HD video on my hard drive that I eventually want to edit in iMovie, but just don't have the time now.  It is clogging up the computer, though.  How do I take the Hd clips off Mac for later editing?

    See "Storage drive" here
    Most commonly used backup methods
Th problem with HD video is it needs a fast external interface, so you should pick a external drive that uses the fastest interface your computer has to offer.
Performance rank fastest to slowest is
    Thunderbolt, USB3, (newer Mac's)
    Firewire 800, USB 2, Firewire 400, USB 1 (older Mac's)
    Newer Windows PC's have USB3, older one's USB 2,1.
You need to format the drive if it comes FAT which a lot do, as FAT has a 4GB file size limit, so this won't work with large HD video files.
So if your  going to use the drive only with a Mac, then head to Utlities > Disk Utility and format it Options: GUID Format: OS X Extended Journaled. (select the drive makers name and click Partition tab)
If your going to use the external drive with a PC, take it to the oldest PC you have and right click and format exFAT.
If you have a Windows XP machine and there is no exFAT, it can be downloaded for free from Microsoft.

  • How to do frame-by-frame editing in iMovie 08 and export in H264?

I wish to edit some videos and then export them in H264 so I can use them on a website.
I have tried to edit with iMovie 08 but can only edit second-by-second. I want to edit frame-by-frame ie to the millisecond. And it appears that iMovie 08 does not export in H264.
I have looked at iMovie 11 which has a Precision Editor which would work to edit as I want but for that I would have to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard which I don't want. It would export H264.
I also have QuickTime Player 7 Pro but that too seems to edit only by the second not by the frame; it does however seem to produce H264
How can I edit these videos precisely and produce H264? Is there another application which would work better (and doesn't cost a fortune).
    Thanks for any ideas

iMovie exports in h.264 by default. All the presets are h.264 (except Tiny).
If you need to adjust the h.264 in some way, then SHARE.EXPORT USING QUICKTIME.
To edit to the nearest frame, Go to iMovie/Preferences and select Display Time Codes.

I am attempting to convert 8mm video cassettes to dvd using a video cassette player, elgato video capture with rca/usb connections to the mac then editing in imovie and burning dvd-r using idvd. The picture quality is awful. What can I do??????

At what point is the video quality bad?  Is it bad on capture?  I would recommend using an s-video 1394 firewire converter instead.  They capture the video at a higher bit rate.  If you have a lot of 8mm tapes to capture, invest in a stand alone DVD recorder.  They capture and compress in one shot.  If you need to rip it back from the DVD into iMovie again, I would recommend using DVDxDV.

    Hi Mark
Was just looking for the answer to this exact question and I just found something that worked for me so don't know if it might be of use to you or you might have already solved your problem!  Basically when I was in iMovie and I clicked to import movies from the computer into iMovie and I found the clip I wanted to import, there are a few options.  I think it asked which Event I wanted to add it to but most importantly it asked me what file size I wanted...I had originally been clicking Large because it advised me to because it reduces the file size...but just on a chance there I selected 'Full - Original' for size and it imported perfectly into iMovie in it's original vertical form!
    Hope this helps!

I recently purchased QuickTime 7 Pro to convert avi files to mov files for editing on Imovie. However, QuickTime won't play the files. How can I get them to play and how can I convert them to mov files?
Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

  • Can videos not recorded on the new ipad be edited with imovie?

can videos not recorded on the new ipad be edited with imovie?

    Hi
Please rephrase Your Question - I'm not clever enough to get it
There are lot's of Cameras that record in lot's of different ways that can be edited in iMovie.
No iMovie can not use all Video-Codec's in the World - they are zillions and many needs to be converted to something iMovie can open and work with.
    • Still digital Cameras as Nikons - Import into iPhoto and then in iMovie Event's window import from iPhoto-videos title
    • miniDV tape Cameras - connects only via FireWire - then just Import from Camera into Event's
    • SD-Card or Hard Disk Cameras Connects most ofthen via USB and Import from "File or other"
    • from Internet - (out of my range - Guessing) - most will need to be converted into something iMovie likes - I would try
    - StreamingDV .dv - or -
    - AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec)
So as You see - I don't get it !
    Yours Bengt W
