Edit in IPhoto

I can see some photos in a certain event, but when I double click to edit I get a black empty screen. I know they are in the library, but why can't I edit them?

Well if you’re running a Managed Library then having your own system of folders on the HD is doubling up the work and utterly redundant. But more importantly, you’re creating an overly complex filing system, and - based on the age old “Keep it Simple Stu...art” principle, complexity can lead to data loss. How? One day you will get confused between iPhoto’s fles and the photos in your own system and delete from the wrong one...
Remember your other post where we discussed ways to access your photos?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
That said:
I cannot absolutely guarantee that the Library will look exactly the same - there are a few variables. But I can state that it will, within the limits described in my post above, be broadly the same.
In any event (sorry about that unintentional pun) you don’t really have much choice.

Why can't I insert photo's edited in iPhoto into my website design? It will only allow me to insert pictures that have not been edited. Is there away around this? Or a reason for it?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You should be able to add edited photos from iPhoto to an iWeb page. How are you adding them and to what type of page?

  • How can I get all options under edit in iPhoto to appear and revert in red, the only option it gives me is to select multiple

how can I get all options under edit in iPhoto on my phone to appear it has revert in red on theleft side & done on the right side, the only choice it gives me is select multiple

The usual cause of that issue is a corrupted or missing font that Firefox replaces by another, in this case a bold, font.
As a test you can try to disable the default font and choose a few different fonts (Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, Times New Roman) to see if you can identify the culprit.<br />
you will have to reinstall that corrupted font.

iPhoto does work and there is an upgrade:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • How to edit external iPhoto Library pictures with an external editor?

    That's my question.
I have my iPhoto Library on an external HD and I want to modify my pics with PSE 11. I've set my iPhoto prefs to do this but it just doesn't work. When I click on "edit with an externale editor" PSE 11 opens but doesn't show the picture, why is that?

The file  you want to select is in the Adobe Photoshop Elements 10/Suport Files folder:
It should be the same for the earlier version of PSE as I recall.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Editing using iPhoto '08

I have iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5. I changed my preferences for editing from iPhoto to Photoshop Elements 6 and now I think that was a mistake. How do I re-set my preferences for editing photos to iPhoto and only using Elements 6 as a backup? Thanks

I get the same result when editing a file of 5.5 or similar size, it is only in raw format that I loose so much file size. I will shoot mostly in large jpeg size from now on, but I have a photo shoot already done in raw and I am trying to get it to my client.
Yes it does say RAW on the lower right corner of the screen, the file info is also at 13.5 mb.
Ug, is all I can say!

Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 for Mac does not show up in Applications. Tutorial for editing from iPhoto shows selecting the Adobe software in Applications. Am I missing a step in registering product?

I answered my own question: There's a difference between "download' and "install." Hunt for "install" (1.5 hrs in my case) and line up your passwords, Adobe ID, etc, then install. Took 15 min. The right choice shows up in Applications. Now it's on to figuring out why photo selected for edit in iPhoto does not show up on screen in Elements.

  • Major screen/graphics distortion while editing in iPhoto.  Any ideas?

    Hi there,
I have a 13" MacBook Pro purchased in late 2011.  We bought the computer specifically for photo editing, as I have a DSLR camera.  The issues with iPhoto started almost immediately after the computer was purchased.  Here's what happens - I'll be editing in iPhoto (usually within the "adjust tab", not quick fixes).  After a few minutes, iPhoto starts seriously dragging, I get the wheel, then I start getting super crazy graphics distortions, but just within the iPhoto screen.  A few more minutes of this, iPhoto usually crashes (in rare cases, it takes down the entire system).  First I had the hard drive replaced.  No dice - problems persisted.  Then Apple replaced the logic board including the video/graphics card.  Still no luck.  I took it in again a week ago, and they are stumped.  They are apparently working with their engineering team and looking at "logs" (?) but it doesn't sound hopeful.  They tell me anything that could be hardware-related has been ruled out, but it's still happening.
    System stats:
Mac OS X Lion version 10.7.5
    2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
Has anyone had similar issues or hear of anything like this before??

First off the 13" Late 2011 Mac notebooks don't really have a add-on Graphics Card in them. They use the Intel HD 3000 graphics chip that is included in the Intel CPU. So I would guess when Apple said they change the graphic card they meant that the graphic system was changed with the logic board and the CPU.
Also the 13" MBPs aren't that great for Photo editing because of the Intel HD 3000 graphic system. But then I do run Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 4 on a Dell notebook that only has the Intel graphics and I have never had either program crash or give flaky graphic distortions.
I suggest you try Adobe Lightroom, Adobe has a free 30 day trial of it, and see if the same things happen. If Lighroom does the same things then it is hardware related in some way. If Lightroom doesn't crash and or give distorted graphics then it is something to do with iPhoto.
I personally don't use iPhoto as I already own Lightroom and Photoshop.
Lightroom is a very powerfull image editing program and a very good image cataloging and management program all rolled up into one package

  • Single Monitor for editing in iPhoto?

My iBook does not present true colors when editing in iPhoto.
I have gone back to the PC and Photoshop Elements for Windows XP to edit photos.
Then, I export them to iPhoto.
Two Questions: 1) what is a good connector device to connect the iBook and the PC to my excellent Trinitron monitor 2) Is Photoshop Elements for Mac a good photo editing program? (Better than iPhoto?)

I can't answer #1 but the answer to #2 is a resounding YES. You can set iPhoto to open PSE when you double click on a photo while in iPhoto. As long as you do not change the file name or extension you can do a regular save. If you create a layered file, necessitating a new extension, .psd, then you need to save it to the desktop and then import as a new file.
Back to #1, There are connectors that will let you run the Sony from your PB. One that will let you switch between your Mac and the darkside, I'm not so sure about.

  • Lossless edit in iPhoto 08

In some of my photo editing in iPhoto 06 i enjoyed the ability to mess with images by repeatedly applying some of the effects to images until they got a painterly aspect to them. With the new improvement of lossless editing in 08 this process has become an absolute pain. Is there any suggestions from the community as to how to achieve this.
    sillyfunnypedro

Well there's a first - someone complaining about lossless editing!
Best to use an external editor: here are some suggestions, starting with free and moving up:
    Seashore
    Graphic Coverter
    Acorn
    Photoshop Elements
and here's a personal favourite - and especially if you're into painterly effects: Compositor

  • Setting Prefernces for Editing in iPhoto 6

In iPhoto 5 if you double clicked an iPhoto and had selected in Prefernces for CS2 to open you could edit there. If you selected the EDIT button in iPhoto it went to iPhoto editing.
I find in iPhoto 6 that selecting CS2 in Prefernces and either double clicking an iPhoto or hitting the EDIT button both take you to CS2. Whatever you selected in iPhoto-- Preferences --General --EDIT IN-- It appears the only way to choose the edit application (CS2 or within iPhoto) is by changing the Prefernce setting in iPhoto. Am I missing something? Thanks for you help.

    Hello,
There are 2 ways to use an external editor and iPhoto's editor without switching preferences around.
    1. Set an external editor. Yes, the EDIT button will still open your external editor. But try the Full-Screen Edit Icon (rectangle with arrows pointing outward at bottom left of window). It should open your photo for editing in iPhoto's Full-Screen edit mode.
    2. From Old Toad:
Using 2 Image Editors in iPhoto
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and a 3rd party editor without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected the 3rd party editor as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". Then when you Control-click on an image, you can select "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu to edit in your selected editor.
    Do these work for you?

In the System log when filtering for iPhoto I see a bunch of this sort of thing and have no clue as to what it may or may not mean:
Mar 13 20:58:55 iMac-60.local WindowServer[125]: disable_update_likely_unbalanced: UI updates still disabled by application "iPhoto" after 15.00 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds). Likely an unbalanced disableUpdate call.
Mar 13 20:59:16 iMac-60.local WindowServer[125]: reenable_update_for_connection: UI updates were finally reenabled by application "iPhoto" after 35.60 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds)

I've run Disc Repair from recovery partition recently but suspect I may need to revisit that.
My next step I suppose is also to reinstall the OS from recovery partition. Does that wipe user data? Does it replace user settings and logins etc?
Following that all that is left is reformat, reinstall OS, and replace user files from backup.
I've been trying to learn from all the input in this valuable thread. Manhy thanks to all. The common ground points to my GeForce card, anyone else with the 130 out there?
    What am I missing? Anything?
Thanks again for the shared knowledge!

I think you are on the right track. It does look bad for your graphics chip.
Re-Installing Mac OS X on a drive without pre-existing flaws will not overwrite User files. But it would be prudent to:
    • Have good backups anyway.
    • Run Disk Utility ( Repair Disk ) as a precaution. ( Verify disk ) will suffice Provided it does not find any faults to be repaired.
    What have I missed?
Yours is an iMac and most of the rest on this thread are MacBook Pro or Mac Pro.

  • Can I have the name stamp on the picture i edit on iPhoto

Can I have the name stamp on the picture i edit on IPhoto?

Do you mean put text onto the photo? Using a plug-in like Border FX yes, or an external editor
In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Can iphoto '9 read pictures edited in iphoto '11

I recently took some pictures for a family member.  I have iPhoto '11 and they have iPhoto '9.  I edited and burned these pics onto a DVD for her.  She can't seem to pull them up in iPhoto '9.  So the question is, can you view pics in iPhoto '9 that were edited in iphoto '11?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes iPhoto 09 can certainly view pics edited in 11, but it can't read the 11 Library.
So, if you burned these to DVD using iPhoto's 'Share -> Burn'command, what you've done is burn a mini iPhoto library to disk.
Try export the pics: File -> Export to a folder on the desktop, then burn that folder to disk with the Finder.
