Edit in photoshop other then 240 dpi

If I choose edit in Photoshop the dng raw file is opening with 240 dpi in photoshop. Is it possible to change that standard to 300 dpi?

> Could someone take a moment to explain how the PPI tag doesn't matter when editing a DNG in PS? I'm new to DNGs and it's not clear to me whether it doesn't matter because PS is actually editing at the full resolution of the file and is misreporting the actual resolution, or whether those edits at 240 PPI get somehow applied to the full resolution of the image. Seems like a dumb question, maybe.
Another way to explain it is this: PPI is completely irrelevant for screen display of images. This is true for all image formats, not just DNG. Images display on your monitor at whatever pixel resolution your monitor is set to and the PPI tag is ignored completely because your monitor's resolution is fixed and cannot change with changing PPI values. So, an image sized at 1024x768 pixels will display at the exact same size on your monitor whether the PPI tag is set to 1 or 300 or any other number.
Printing is different. PPI is relevant but what really counts is pixel dimensions and desired print size. PPI is a computed value based on pixel dimensions and print size, the bigger the print, the smaller the PPI value.

  • Edit in photoshop - no options

    Hi
I am using Lightroom 2.3 and Photoshop CS4
I was able to to right click on an image and edit in photoshop and then a list of options opens as follows:
In the Library module or Develop module, select the photos you want to edit, and choose Photo > Edit In Adobe Photoshop or Edit in Adobe Photoshop Elements.
In the Edit Photo dialog box, select one of the following:
    Edit Original
Edits the original file without Lightroom adjustments. (JPEG, TIFF, and PSD only)
    Edit A Copy
Edits a copy of the original file without Lightroom adjustments. (JPEG, TIFF, and PSD only)
Edit A Copy With Lightroom Adjustments
Edits a copy of the original file with Lightroom adjustments visible. When sending a copy to the external editor, the newly created file is automatically added to the librar
But now - I Think since the LR 2.3 upgrade - the image simply opens in PS - no options are given and it does not open in the RAW Editor - my guess I have a settings to adjust but I can not find it any one offer any help?
    Matt

Well obviously the LR team was well aware that this was a common workflow for Graphic Designers or they would not have left in that functionality and given (3) vs (1) optional method of round-tripping? It is not creating any problem that it is there - I was just trying to understand why someone would want to make a second round of LR adjustments?
I totally understand why I would want to (and do) perform many INITIAL edits to the overall image in LR before going to Photoshop both for ease of use, non-destructive/re-settable edits on the 16-bit RAW file itself, but once those edits have been made and the image is then sent to and manipulated in Photoshop and returned to LR (maybe as even an 8-bit image), why would I attempt to make further LR adjustments to a non-RAW version?
As far as "why" I would even want to open it is Photoshop - because Photoshop does not only do "a lot" of things LR won't - more like "millions" of things LR can't! A professional Photographer may be able to survive without Photoshop at all as many just make "adjustments" to photos and sell photos. For me, the photos are usually just a "starting" place. I don't have hundreds, but "thousands" of dollars in Photoshop plugins to create things that could never be accomplished n LR. Photoshop is just the central "engine" for me (and the cheapest part of my upgrades as well). Some of my Photoshop files end up with over 100 layers alone - none of which are photo-quality adjustments.
In my case, I am BOTH a professional Photographer AND a Graphic Designer. So, ALL my RAW photos "start" in LR and it is a great way to review, compare, sort, RAW and general image-adjusted files - also great for online web proofs to clients, but when it gets to "creative" work or the images go into 3D, After Effects, animated elements, Flash, etc. Photoshop is usually the next step.

Same here. I've never had trouble with this function before.
It opens the Photoshop application with all the menus/windows, but it never opens the actual image I chose to work on.
I'm on a Mac, using OS X Yosemite, 10.10.1  Lightroom is version 5.7  Photoshop is CS5, version 12.0.4
FWIW, I also can't automate>Photomerge ... . Makes me think Photoshop, not Lightroom, is all wacky. I tried dumping PS preferences

Search the forum - it seems like some action will resolve this - like an edit in iPhoto or something - I just vaguly remember someone saying they have a wrok arround - I also think that it mayh have to do with Nikon cameras although I'm fuzzy on that too

  • Question about externally editing in Photoshop then saving but the files not showing up in catalog

When I am in Lightroom and I choose edit in Photoshop then I save the file, I would like the file to automatically show up in my Lightroom catalog.  It shows up if I save as a tiff like I set up in my preferences, but not if I save as a jpeg.  I would like for the jpegs to also show up in the catalog.  Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Jennifer

I found that if I do a <save> in Photoshop first (which saves a tiff or psd file, depending on the setting in Preferences), and THEN a <save as> to save as jpg, both files are automatically added to the catalog.
I do agree that if I just do a <save as>, without doing a <save> first, the <save as> file is not added to the catalog.
My workflow is good for me, because after developing a photo in LR, I then do further editing in PS, and then save the edited file as a tiff (or psd) at full pixel dimensions, with the edit layers. The next step is, if I need a jpg of that photo (for web or email), I flatten the file, reduce image size, convert to sRGB, etc., then save as a jpg. This way, I have the three files I always make/keep, and all three files end up in the LR catalog.
I agree that I could use the Export function in LR to generate the jpg instead, but 1) I'm too used to doing it right there in PS while I have the file open and 2) I can use all the tools in PS to do tweaks that the photo may need when converted to jpg.

  • Editing in photoshop, then returning to lightroom

I apologize if this has been asked before, but I've been searching for a while now and haven't found an answer.
If I select the 'edit in photoshop' option in lighroom, the images opens up in photoshop as expected.  If I then save the image in PS, it creases a new tiff version of the image which is then put back in lightroom.  If I go back into lightroom, and select my new PS edited image, and now apply one of my presets, the image looks horrible and not what the preset is supposed to look like.  I think it's because when you open up a canon RAW file, certain sliders are set at certain values.  For example, brighness is at +50 by default on a RAW file.  When I apply my preset the brightness goes up to +60.  However on my new PS edited tiff, the brightness is at 0, and when I apply the same preset, instead of going up by 10, it goes up to 60, which of course blows the whole image out since it's an increase of 60 and not 10 like if I applied the preset to the original RAW file.
My question is, is there anyway to reset the image somehow so a preset will look good on a PS edited tiff?
    Thanks.

    cjcraze wrote:
ok thanks.  Seems strange that Adobe doesn't have a way to convert a preset so that it will work on a rendered image.
Not at all...Presets are "Absolute Settings" meaning that the settings are being applied regardless of the original file's condition. A raw file and a rendered tiff (or psd) will be completely different...
You need to create a separate set of Presets for raw files and rendered files such as jpeg or tiff/psd files. It's an either/or situation...
Note, Quick Develop settings ARE "relative" vs. "absolute" so you can adjust both raw files and rendered files using QD.

  • Allow User to set dpi for "Edit in Photoshop"

It is very frustrating to continually have to change image dpi to 300 in Photoshop from the 240 default in Lightroom. Please let user set a preference to their desired dpi workspace.

OK, that's the info I was looking for. For work in PS the dpi doesn't
make any difference [and 300 is - I have a few years of advertising
and production behind me, too - overkill in most cases].

  • Edits in Lightroom 5-then in Photoshop CC -back to Lightroom

    Hi,
    Hope you can help.
    1) Imported a raw image from camera (converted to dng) into lightroom 5.
    2) performed some edits in the "Develop" module.
    3) Did some further external edits in Photoshop CC-by switching to Photoshop CC trough Lightroom -"edit in" Lightroom menu item- Lightroom edits preserved in photoshop.
    4 "saved" in Photoshop CC
    5) Back to Lightroom-- Original edits from lightroom no longer in edited copy from photoshop.
Question-- How to preserve Lightroom edits? Tried doing a copy of the Lightroom settings before going to Photoshop and then pasting back into the edited copy form photoshop. Did not work out-Don't know which setting to save-saving everthing- terrible result.
    Thanks.

When you send to PSD with Lightroom changes, it should render one layer in PSD that represents the original image and any changes you made in LR. So if you're seeing all those changes in PS, I'm not sure how that layer could have things undone to it. Are you sure the changes are represented in PS and not simply the PS showing the image differently? Can you try it with a drastic change in LR like a heavy, heavy vignette and make sure that shows up in PS?
Was that the first trip in to PS for that image? I've seen some inconsistencies before with multiple trips in to PS with XMP turned on where Lightroom gets out of sync with the changes that were made in PS. I did a post about it over on my blog that's a bit complicated so I'll link it here: http://bit.ly/14khoR2. Not sure if the same situation can happen with the DNG.
When you get back in to Lightroom, does the film strip have a little icon on the image that looks like three lines and an exclamation mark? That's the "I'm out of sync" with the metadata warning flag.
If you export to Photoshop as TIFF, do you see the same behavior?
Finally, does it do it on every image or just one? Maybe LR got glitched with what it thought were changes for that specific image and needs a kick.

  • Renaming masters and then editing in photoshop, the name reverts back...

So, if do a batch rename on a bunch of raw files to example 1.NEF, then example 2.NEF and so on, I select apply to masters. It works fine, even if I export the masters, with the master name, it shows the new name. No problem.
However, if I right click in aperture and select edit in photoshop on one of the aforementioned masters, then the new PSD file that is created has the original name as it was from the camera! What the heck?
    Am I missing something?

Let's look at what's happening in the background: (tested or managed library)
In the Pictures folder is the Aperture library.
A typical master might be in a folder year>month>date>subfolder.
On sending to Photoshop a PSD (or tiff) is created and stored with the master.
    This is edited and returned.
In the Previews folder year>month>date>subfolder>subfolder is found a jpg with the original name (there are also thumbnails and faces files).
This seems to be picked up when the edited file comes back from Photoshop.
    More research neeeded!

  • From LR edit it Photoshop then saving back to LR

I have just updated LR5 to LR5.2 and updated my photoshop CC and now after i chose an image in LR and edit in Photoshop it wont let me justSave and close, it keeps going to Save as which seems to creat a new filename then when I close and go back to LR it cannot locate the file so I have to keep going to 'locate missing file' to find me photoshopped image. Why cant I just save and it will make a copy back in LR like it used to. I have looked over my LR preferences and Photoshop preferences and i cant see what to fix.

Re-installing Illustrator seemed to work, even though it was fully up to date and now technically it's not, it works better now. I guess I'll be pausing the "updates" from now on.
    Thanks!

  • How do I save files I've edited in Photoshop to a location other than the original folder?

I cannot find a way to change the location of the .psd files created when I edit in Photoshop. Ever since Lightroom 1 they go into the same folder as the orginal, and I would rather have them all placed together in one folder. I have just upgraded to LR 3 and was hoping this might have been dealt with, but cannot find a way. Surely I cannot be the only person to want this... thank you and best wishes, joe holly

WW, Smart Collection. Very good. I would still need to rescue the files from their folders. I have been using LR from the very beginning, but have moved up to LR3 just this week, and, thus am just becoming acquainted. Can I do that in LR3?
DJ Paige, I like your idea of finding the files, except that I do not want to remove them from LR; I just want to make some space on my HD.
FYI, I am quite conscious as to the importance of my original files. I keep a copy on my desktop Mac, along with a backup updated daily. Also, I archive two copies on DVD (or, now, on BluRay) discs and keep each set in a different place. As such I can dump the original NEFs from my laptop and if one is needed, find it on a disc.
Thank you for your concern, however.
Frankly, I'm amazed that Adobe hasn't encountered this before. I can't be the only guy who shoots a lot and downloads to my MacBook Pro. My HD is 750 gigs and I fill it from time to time. Earlier this month I visited New Orleans and cruised the Caribbean. In that 10 days I shot 5,000 images -- about 45 gigs. Most will never be seen. I want to trash them so I can go somewhere else and do it again. But I don't want to get rid of them. Among other things, I do slide shows -- have for about 40 years -- and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that if you throw something away, almost immediately you will need it.
As I'm sure you are aware, a lot of work is needed to take care of all these images in simply renaming and sorting and like that. On the Mac I can separate the NEFs from the PSDs before I trash the RAW files. But this takes time and is more work.
Once agai, thank you both and best wishes.

  • Editing photo in Photoshop and then getting it back in Book

I've made my preferences to edit in Photoshop. When I'm done editing and I "save" the image, it doesn't change it in the book. I don't see the edited photo in the unplaced photo pane either. The edited photo is in the photo album. How do I get it into the book?
    thanks

    confusedagain:
Hi again. When you save the edited version does it still have the jpg extension? If you've created a layered file or done an edit that PS wants to save as it's own, i.e. a psd extension, you must either flatten the image and/or do a Save As, selecting the jpg extension. iPhoto will save the file in the appropriate subfolder in the Modified folder and update the database file along with the thumbnail file.
What you're currently ending up with are a number or orphaned psd files or jpg files in the wrong location in your library.
    Do you Twango?

  • File size wrong when editing in Photoshop

Sometimes when I right click on an image in Lightroom and choose Edit in Photoshop, the resulting file in Photoshop has a size of 72 dpi and usually like around 3" on the long side. The original file is 13 mp so it isn't because the initial file is small. This happens maybe 20% of the time, and I cannot find a pattern to it.
My workaround is to open that image in Bridge, go through ACR and it is then fine in Photoshop.
I am using the Photoshop CS3 beta, but I don't suspect that is the problem.
Anyone else having this issue? Is it something I am inadvertantly doing? Or if it is a known problem is there a fix?

Hmmm. Wonder why these few images would be any different than the ones before/after them? They are all raw files from my 5D, imported by Lightroom from my cf card. And again, I can process the same files I had problems with in Lightroom through Bridge and go into ACR and they are fine that way. Next time it happens, I will email you the CR2 file...thanks. Hopefully you can see something interesting about it!
Is there some place in Lightroom that I can specify what ppi and/or file size to use when I edit in Photoshop? The files (other than these weird ones) are currently coming in at 240 and I'd prefer 300. Just saves me one little step of changing it, but hey every step helps in a workflow!

  • Saving a 72 dpi psd file as a jpg the file gets converted to a 240 dpi file

I do alot of comps for my business in photoshop.  I've usually start out 8" x 10" 72 dpi and save it as psd.  When I do a "Save As" to jpg and reopen that file the file has converted to 240 dpi and 2" by 3".  I want the jpg the same  size 8" x 10" 72 dpi.  How is this happening?

"I've usually start out 8" x 10" 72 dpi and save it as psd.  When I do a "Save As" to jpg and reopen that file the file has converted to 240 dpi and 2" by 3"." is what you wrote.
Then something you did or used during you post processing  cropped your  4:5 aspect ratio image's  576 px by 720 px to a  2:3 Aspect Ratio image reducing the pixels to 480PX by 720 Px  and change its DPI resolution to 240DPI,   Something you did cropped your original 4:5 aspect ratio image to a 2:3 aspect ratio image its height is still the original 720Px High but the width  has been reduced by 96 px  its now 480Px wide.
Photoshop does not crop and change a documents dpi resolution on it own but it does have features that can be used to do that.
DPI is just a setting its the pixels involved that matter.

  • Using iPhoto and editing with Photoshop Elements 4

    Hello
I am new to Macs after many years using PC and I am struggling to set up my photo workflow. I shoot in RAW format and input into iPhoto from iPhoto I double click on the photo and which opens the RAW editor in Photoshop Elements. After making changes I open the file in Photoshop and then save as a TIFF.
My problem is I do not see the changed and saved file in iPhoto and if I double click on the photo again it opens back up in the RAW editor not as a TIFF.
Can any one point me in the right direction to solve this or is what I am trying to do not possible
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
What you're trying to do is not possible.
When you save as a TIFF you create a whole new file that needs to be imported into iPhoto anew. iPhoto will track an edit as long as you stay with the same file - so, edit your jpeg in PSE and use the 'Save' command and the change is reflected in iPhoto. However, you cannot Save RAW files, it's always a Save As... and so the resulting file has to be imported.
