Edit-in-place but still prompt to cache

Hi,
I have my media stored on a SAN. The assets are there and media & Library devices, are set to edit-in-place URI's file://localhost/Volumes/Fibre 1/IDTV YV/Final Cut Server/Media resp. /Library. But on dragging an asset to Final Cut Pro I still get the "you need to cache" prompt.
What else do I have to do? Am I missing something?

Problem solved. Turned out the specific asset was corrupt!

Hi all,
Trying to figure out if the above is possible.
Reason being Orig media is either uncompressed or prores 444 or Red.
Over Gig-E the Prores edit proxies are fine to be edit in place so no need to cache every time.
Is this possible?

Yes. You'll want to reshare the edit proxy device read only, via AFP or NFS.
There are caveats - editing over ethernet cannot guarantee bandwidth and latency in the same way as fibre or direct of disk, so there might be occasional dropped frames. But for the purposes of editing with the proxies, this is not so much of a big deal - you'll be conforming with the hi-res media at a later point.
Depending on how many clients and streams per client would be using this, you'd need to have a think about the backend infrastructure. I've got a setup where I have the edit proxies device on an XSan and a dedicated XServe resharing the device as AFP (read only). That keeps the AFP I/O off the final cut server machine.
You can also do things like get a 4 port ethernet card and bond the network interfaces to give you more bandwidth from the xserve to the switch.

Got a new MBP with Mavericks but still prompting to download Mavericks in App Store

I'm not sure if I have to download and install Mavericks again on this machine but this is a brand new late october MBP with OS X 10.9

You don't need to download OS X Mavericks because you are already using it. The only purpose to download OS X Mavericks would be to create a USB drive with the Mavericks installer in case you want to reinstall Mavericks in the future

IPhoto 11 doesn't show places but still shows gps data

I have some photos that don't show up in places. If I do a slideshow and uses the places theme, it shows them in the correct location. Any idea why it is doing this?
Another odd thing is if I highlight all events, 377 events, 1500 photos and do a slideshow with the places theme it only shows two places and I have quite a few more than that listed. Why is it doing this? Thanks.

I just noticed this with a different photo. They were definantly not in the same place, the first set was in california, the second was in arkansas. It shows the location for both just a little to the right, and up from Cupertino. I just did an extra 16 that don't have places set, and all of them show the same place in Cupertino. iPlaces is a revolutionary new feature?

Edit in place documents not working in beehive team collaboration w/IE

I know the Chrome,Firefox browsers don't have an edit-in-place, but IE is supposed to map the network drive via webdav and uses this as a back channel to save the changes on saving the document.
This was working very well on my old laptop using a 32 bit windows, and an older IE platform. probably 95% of the time.
Since my upgrade to Windows 7, 64-bit, IE 8.0.7601, it works about 20% of the time. Very unreliable. Does anyone know what can be done to get this to work more consistently?

After much testing, I realized that on the FCSr machine that it indeed had edit-in-place status because of the storage directly attached to it. BUT the other client computers did not.
So basically, since we don't have the $1000 a seat for XSAN and we are only cutting DV and DVCPRO HD...
We could configure our Mac Pro Server to be an AFP share over the network; it's plenty fast over Ethernet since it's aggregated over 6 gigabit ports to a switch and has PCIe RAID storage attached. We could give this edit-in-place status IF...
We used another machine (server class) to install FCSr on.
This would work right?

FCSvr system, XSAN, Edit-In-Place set for all Devices. But when FCP projects are checked out by the editors, it still loads all the video files into their local Cache. Unable to duplicate the problem on my own system. The difference is that they have some Ethernet only clients, and some Fibre clients (FCP only on Fibre clients). Why would Edit-In-Place still download the video files to local cache?
FYI, I've set up FCSvr systems before, this is my first mixed (Fibre + Ethernet only) environment, and the first time I've seen this odd behavior.

OK, well, there were other problems they didn't tell me about. Some video assets could be drag-and-dropped from a Projects window in FCSvr to the Browser in FCP. Others could only be done from an Assets window in FCSvr. And this had been going on since the FCSvr 1.5 upgrade.
I attempted to change the URI, but FCSvr would simply revert back to the original every time I tried. I logged out, and the whole system seems to work fine now. Go figure.
Anyone see any quirks with the FCSvr 1.5 upgrade?
Now they want to upgrade everything to Snow Leopard. I'm not touching the Leopard Servers until I see a more stable SL Server!

However, after the update to 7.3 it did a whole welcome to yr iPad and a set up thing and it went to set up iCloud and had my old Apple ID in grey where I can't change or edit it, it wants the password, when I put in the old password, it say yr Apple ID is incorrect but yet it won't let me change it??????? Sign out and back into your apple id from Settings>iTunes and App stores>(Your apple ID)>Sign Out and then sign in again with the new address. Close app store from running in the background (or restart the phone if your unsure how to do this). If when trying to update any apps they are still asking for the old apple ID, delete and re-install those apps.

Assets are "Edit In Place" yet dragging to Final Cut Pro requests caching

This is an odd one. I have a large number of assets on our device that I can successfully drag from Final Cut Server directly to Final Cut Pro without issue. However I have what appears to be thousands of assets on the exact same device that I can not drag without the dialog box "You must add this asset to the cache before you can use it in a Final Cut Studio project."
This is very weird. If I right click on the asset in Final Cut Studio and select to view the Original Media I get the warning "The asset is an edit-in-place asset. Any changes..." so obviously it knows it is an edit in place asset, so why are they giving me grief when dragging to Final Cut Pro?

Sorry that I keep replying to myself, but the bazaar behavior continues...
I took one of these odd assets and made a copy to my desktop. Then I deleted the asset and file within Final Cut Server. Next I moved the asset from my desktop back to the original location and waited for a Full Scan to pick up the asset.
After the Full Scan, the asset was draggable to Final Cut Pro! I can't possibly do this to every asset. Did the database get corrupt?

My first thought was that maybe when you imported you chose to leave the files in place rather than copy then to the iMovie library..but I can't see where that option is now.
I too have created a short movie from load f clips..but can't export or share either..the 'Share 'menu is empty..you go to it and no sub menu appears.

I disabled Sync history with IE , yet every time i look at my history in Firefox it shows all the IE places i visited , how do i stop this , so i can go to only my Firefox history , but still have IE and Firefox synced

I use Firefox and Google Chrome for forums because they are faster than IE as IE(7) tends to hang a lot , so i have all my Favorites and everything synced with Firefox , as this is my main browser , but i do still use IE7 for some browsing , u went to Settings and unchecked the History , in the Sync section , but when i go to Firefox to view a forum topic i was looking at , recently , if i had gone to IE and visited any sites , then they show up in my history (for example Craigslist , i will look at several adds , and ALL of them are in my Firefox History) and push my Firefox history off the list so i have to go back to my favorites and start over , instead of being able to use my Firefox ONLY history so i can just go to those pages
Is there anyway to fix/bypass this but still have Cookies and Favorites and such synced ?? , without the IE History knocking all my Firefox history off the list ??
It's just annoying to have to go back from the beginning and search the topic i was in on a forum, because it was bumped off the list by any browsing i did in IE7, in between time

Is it OK to reply to my own question?? Thanks to the related posts that appeared AFTER I'd made the post above, I learnt about the 'Manage my places' item under the Windows menu. I felt a bit dumb not knowing this.
BUT it doesn't completely resolve the issue. The info shown in the EXIF (using opt-cmd-I) under Places has the place name I choose, but it is followed by a few other lines that are incorrect and do not seem to be anything to do with any data I can see under 'Manage my places'.
Can anyone explain where these other entries might come from, and how to edit them?

Update on all pages but still editable

I have a navigation bar that is slightly different for each page of the site. Based on the current page you are on, the corresponding navigation button is "pressed". The problem is that I need to change parts of the entire navigation bar a lot. For example, I may need to add a new button, or change the name on something. Is there any way to update all the pages, but still maintain the ability to edit them? It seems that when I try to use a template in order for it to update I cannot then customize it on specific pages.

A persistent page indicator on your site-wide menu would be a better option. That way you don't need to customize menus on each page.

DW Templates are OK for small sites -- under 50 pages. But you must re-publish every page that uses the Template.
Look at Server-Side Includes. With SSIs you open the file containing your menu HTML. Make changes. Save and upload to server. Done! A huge timesaver.
