Edit iPhoto book in Aperture

I have an iPhoto book I made prior to acquiring Aperture2. I would like to edit this book's photos in Aperture (i.e., using advanced editing features available in Aperture) and have the changes reflected in the book created with iPhoto. Is there a way to do that without having to re-create the entire book?
Thanks in advance.

No.

  • Iphoto import of Original and Edited Iphoto versions from Aperture

I am using Aperture to improve some of my IPhoto 2008 edited pics. I'm keeping my Iphoto pics in their current location and importing selected ones to Aperture that I want to edit further. Following import of an IPhoto album to Aperture I could see both 'IPhoto Original', and 'IPhoto Edited' versions (great!). For some pics I have further edited the 'original' and for others I've further edited the 'IPhoto edited' version. For a few I've used Aperture to further edit/improve BOTH versions.
I imported the photos back into Iphoto but I can't see both the 'edited' and 'original' in the browser, I can see and import only the 'IPhoto edited' version - hence not seeing in iPhoto some pics I have edited and want to use.
What's the best way to get the other (ie both) versions into IPhoto? I want to create a book in Iphoto because I have additional Iphoto pics to include that don't need an Aperture edit. A key consideration is not eating up disk space.
    Thank you BW

BW -- just wanted to underscore nathan's excellent but (likely) unwelcome and perhaps easily ignored advice:
Don't use both applications for storing your pictures or for photo editing.
What you want to do -- use iPhoto (a superb program, imho) for image management of most image editing, and then export to Aperture for just a few images -- is a good idea on the face of it but difficult to implement and practically impossible to maintain.
Examine your options, take into proper account your experience and your needs, and choose one or the other ^1^. Images which need additional work which you can't accomplish in iPhoto should be edited using an external editor (such as PSCS5 or PSE or others).
    1. The programs (Aperture and iPhoto) are extremely different in concept and depth. Search the forum for some of those differences. Imho, Aperture takes 50x as long to learn as iPhoto. The curve is not steep, but it is long. Aperture is much more powerful than iPhoto.
PS: As soon as you can, get the largest fast internal drive you can afford. And make multiple back-ups of your Libraries. If you know you can always restore a Library, deleting one isn't terrifying.

  • Importing iPhoto Books into Aperture

How do I get the books I've created in IPhoto into Aperture?

    Short answer is you can't.
When you import your iPhoto library into Aperture any books in iPhoto will be turned into an Album with all the pictures that were in the iPhoto books filmstrip view. You'll have to recreate the book in Aperture's book tool.

  • Editing iPhoto book pages

I'm making a book in iphoto11. Why can't I select an individual page for editing? Double click does nothing. Thanx for your help

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos, create a book and check to see if the same problem persists. If the problem doesn't persist then you current library is the culprit.
In that case make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If the problem persists in the test library  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Editing iPhoto pics Using Aperture 3 Help

I am using Aperture 3 to fine tune edit my iPhoto pics.  Question is....once its edited, how do I get the revised image to save or better replace the original in iPhoto (without dragging copying and pasting?)

    You can't.
Aperture is not a photo editor like Photoshop, Acorn or Pixelmator.
Like iPhoto, it's a database. Images have to be imported to Aperture. To get them out agin they have to be exported.
Aperture is not an external editor for iPhoto.
It's a complete replacement for iPhoto.
You can share your previews with iPhoto - but that requires dragging from the Media Browser.
Honestly: you need to decide which app you want to manage your photos - Aperture or iPhoto and then forget the other one.

  • Is it possible to export a Book from Aperture 3 to iPhoto?

I shot a wedding for a friend and made a layout of a book on Aperture 3.
Printed a few books which I thought were beautiful.
I was wondering if it would be possible to export this book from Aperture (with the layout and photos intact) as a file (editable or read-only), so my friend can import and open it using iPhoto and order more copies of the book through Apple when she pleases.
Tried Google and couldn't find an answer. Thank you for taking the time.

How about importing from iPhoto into Aperture 3?
I have made a photobook in iPhoto and then bought Aperture 3, but I can't find it possible to export the book in a format that I can open in Aperture. Also, when I export the book in size Large or above, iPhoto crashes.

  • Editing iPhotos in Aperture

I've had Aperture 3 for a week now, and I'm pretty well up to speed on the features. Three things are still puzzling me:
    1) Is there a way to share Aperture photos with another Mac on my home network? This was easy in iPhoto, but I don't see the capability in Aperture so far.
    2) The latest iPhoto has nice formats for e-mailing photos, but I don't see anything like that in Aperture - am I overlooking something?
    3) Last and most importantly - I got Aperture primarily because of its implied ability to easily edit iPhoto photos, but it appears that I need to go through the cumbersome process of importing the photo into Aperture, then exporting the edited photo back to iPhoto. Is there an easier way? If not, I'm regretting this purchase. I'm already convinced that I need to keep using iPhoto for books, e-mails, and sharing, so it's kind of pointless to have Aperture if you can't easily sync edited photos back and forth with iPhoto. Thanks.

    Hi J,
Welcome to the user-supported Aperture discussion group. Make sure you read the [Terms of Use|http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa] that Apple has us abide by.
Aperture is not a "superset" of iPhoto, so just because there is a particular function in iPhoto does not mean you will find it in Aperture, or that it will work quite the same if you do find it.
    1) Is there a way to share Aperture photos with another Mac on my home network? This was easy in iPhoto, but I don't see the capability in Aperture so far.
You need Aperture to read the Aperture library, so you'd need Aperture on each computer to open a library. However,it is ill-advised to have more than one instance of Aperture point to the same library.
Some people have had success using iTunes to manage syncing Aperture's previews to other devices. However, I'm not sure you can have iTunes sync between two Macs. (I only use it for music.)
    2) The latest iPhoto has nice formats for e-mailing photos, but I don't see anything like that in Aperture - am I overlooking something?
What sorts of formats are you talking about? You can export your photos from Aperture and use them to your heart's content, but I'm not sure in what way you need to "format" a photo.
Last and most importantly - I got Aperture primarily because of its implied ability to easily edit iPhoto photos,
I'm not sure where you got that implication from. You can easily import the iPhoto library, including masters and the existing adjustments you have made, so in that way you can edit "iPhoto photos". However, Aperture only allows adjustments of photos in its Aperture library.
but it appears that I need to go through the cumbersome process of importing the photo into Aperture, then exporting the edited photo back to iPhoto. Is there an easier way?
Yes, the easier way is to use Aperture as your main library and export only the things that you need to use in iPhoto. Import them into iPhoto temporarily and get rid of them in iPhoto when you're done. That's exactly how I used to do slideshows, since pre-Aperture 3 had atrocious slideshow support. I also do that to make calendars in iPhoto. (I would agree that it would be great if the iPhoto calendar functionality were lifted into Aperture insted of going the extra step of going "backwards" to put photos into iPhoto.)
I'm already convinced that I need to keep using iPhoto for books, e-mails, and sharing, so it's kind of pointless to have Aperture if you can't easily sync edited photos back and forth with iPhoto
Aperture wasn't designed to be the sidekick of iPhoto. Aperture gives you the tools to get your photos out of iPhoto and to start using Aperture. iPhoto, on the other hand, doesn't have the ability to read the Aperture library. There's no reason to expect that every adjustment you make in Aperture is something that iPhoto can mimic if it were able to read an Aperture library. "Going the other way" isn't a function built into either program.

It is automatic - you just go ahead and come back when ever

  • "Edit photo" link in iPhoto Book Project does not work

    Hi,
I am putting together an Book project in iPhoto.  On a few pictures, I would like to edit them to make minor adjustments.
When I right click on the picture in iPhoto Book Project, there is an option to "Edit Photo".
When I click on the "Edit Photo" link, the screen switches to the iPhoto Edit page  but the picture does not load for editing - it's just a black screen.
I can always edit the photo before placing it in the Book, but in a large Book it is more convenient to select the picture on the Book page rather than going back and look for it in iPhoto.
Anyone has experienced/fixed this?  Is this a bug?  I have version 9.2.3
    Thanks
    Armen

Are you able to go to the photo in its Event and edit it there? Apply the fix below:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #1 to repair permissions and #4 to rebuild the database.

  • How do I save my edits in iPhoto and/or Aperture?

I have edited an image in iPhoto and again in Aperture and can't find either. The original remains. I can find no "Save" option and assumed that it was automatic. If so, where does it go? Is there a "save as" option?

I can find no "Save" option and assumed that it was automatic. If so, where does it go? Is there a "save as" option?
Yes, Aperture and iPhoto will save the edited Version.
In Aperture the edited version will replace the previously edited version, unless you set the option "Create new versions when making adjustments" in the Aperture Preferences Advanced panel.
So the image you are seeing in iPhoto or Aperture will be your edited image.
Were you expecting to find an edited version outside the Aperture library in the Finder? If you want that, use the command "File > Export" to save an edited version of your image to a folder on the Desktop. Aperture does not actually create edited image file, unless you export a version.

1 - without specifics I have no idea how to help
2 - the question was "are you trying to use them in iPhoto? " - it sounds like you are - to do so you will have to export them from Aperature and import into iPhoto
3 - for information on how to use them in Aperature then you need to ask about how to use Aperature in the Aperature forum as it does not involve iPhoto

  • IPhoto Books What about Aperture Books In Australia

    Hello Everyone.
Now iPhoto books are available in Australia, has anyone tried a book from Aperture ???
    Many Thanks

I had Aperture 1.5.6 and they didn't work from there but I've just upgraded to Aperture 2.0 (an excellent upgrade, well worth it) and they do work from this version - books & prints only though.

  • How can I import a "book" from Aperture into iPhoto?

  • Using Aperture 2 to Edit Iphoto 08 Library

I imported my Iphoto 08 library into Aperture 2 as reference images so I can still view my iphoto library on my HD Samsung through my PS3 using Medialink, after I edit the images with Aperture. My question is will there be any problems if I edit / delete / change images in my iphoto using Aperture ? Are there any tricks or things to be careful about ? I don't want to corrupt my library. I am a recent convert to mac (SR Macbook) and iphoto 08 did a great job with importing and initial organizing the mess of photo from all my windows machines. Aperture 2 seems to have better editing and file management of my resultant 25000 + library. I'd like to use both iphoto and Aperture together.

I import into Iphoto first for a couple of reasons. If I have some videos on my camera, which i usually do, Iphoto will capture them for viewing or editing later. Aperture won't. Second, Time Machine works with Iphoto, not with Aperture. So backups are automatic with Iphoto. With Aperture, you can backup with vaults. I import all my images into Aperture (as referenced images) mostly so I can manage them, IE, organize using metadata, and place into folders by year / month, etc. Also, when you do edit in Aperture, no extra copies are made, like in Iphoto, because, Aperture takes the master from the iphoto library and applies your edits on the fly. You can continually edit and change the image in Aperture and it only will render and make a new image / master when you want to export.
As far as keeping track of various version of images, after organizing and editing in Aperture, you can place a rating on images, or place them in an album of good stuff (which is just a link to the real image), to then export into a new iphoto event of good stuff, etc
Alternately, you could import the images into Aperture as masters, and Aperture will make another copy, which means you'll have two of each image taking up twice as much space. Depending how many images and how much hard drive space you have will determine if this works. You could keep either or both Aperture and / or Iphoto libraries on external hard drives. You could import directly into Aperture and only export good stuff into iphoto, if you don't have any videos to manage and you're willing to backup with Aperture vault.
I setup the external editor in Aperture to use CS3 PS. When you select edit in external editor, Aperture renders a new master which you edit in PS and end up with a new master in Aperture.
Good luck. I went through several workflows with Aperture trial and almost gave up. In the end though, after I saw what Aperture can do, Iphoto along wasn't good enough and I came up with something that works for me.
