Edit length of region causes pops/crackles during playback

Anyone else being bothered by this?
It's a song created in 7.2, now 7.2.1.
Not necessarily just audio regions, but also audio instrument regions. Corrupt song?

Ok, playing back song, edit the length of a region (audio or audio instrument) with the mouse, and get a burst of noise or total sound dropout. It's starting to noise-burst even during normal playback (by which I mean I'm not touching anything at the time). I guess it's the song...

  • ASIO enabled apps seem to be causing popping/crackling in my right channel

Not 100% sure of this, but I seemed to have narrowed it down to that... let me explain a bit...
I have an Audigy 2 Platinum and the four main audio applications I use are Sony's Sound Forge 8.0, Propellerhead's Reason 3.0, Steinberg's Cubase SX, and Yannick Delwiche's MadTracker 2.5. Now, here are the audio device settings for each application:
Sound Forge 8.0 - "Microsoft Sound Mapper"
    Reason 3.0 - "SB Audigy 2 ASIO [A800]"
Cubase SX - "SB Audigy 2 ASIO [A800]"
    MadTracker 2.5 - "SB Audigy 2 Audio [A800]"
As you can see, two of the apps are set for ASIO while the other 2 are regular WDM type things. Here's what I noticed one day while trying to record from "What U Hear/Wave." With Sound Forge's Record window open, the visual line monitor was showing the right channel having sporadic pops & cracks every second or so. Even though I wasn't hearing these pops & cracks from the actual physical right speaker, I recorded something and, not surprisingly, the pops & cracks were included on the right channel of my recording. Not sure where it was coming from, I rebooted, fired up Sound Forge again, and this time the visual line monitor was silent... perfect... but here's where the problems happen... with Sound Forge still open, I fired up Reason and the instant it loaded, the line monitor started with the pops & cracks again.
In short, after playing numerous scenarios, it appears once an app set to use ASIO is started, popping & cracking stays in the right channel until I reboot. Non-ASIO apps seem to leave everything fine but once an ASIO app gets started the crackling returns and the only way to get rid of it is a reboot.
Any idea what's going on? I would appreciate actual help and not some trivial e-pene-fuled "you shouldn't be using an SB for pro audio noob, etc etc blah blah blah"

Have you checked if there are IRQ shares with Audigy?
Did you mute other Sources than wave when you recorded using "W-U-H"?
What latency settings are you using with ASIO?

  • System overload box keeps popping up during playback. any answers?

I'm working on a project that only has 34 total tracks. They're not even playing all at once. I keep getting a window that pops up saying: "System Overload. The audio engine was not able to process all required data in time." I cleaned up the project and dumped the unused files but still have had no luck getting rid of the window that pops up and stops playback. Any answers would be greatly appreciated

for me it is very difficult to believe that this behavior occurs randomly, in fact I have 2 different disks (leopard) ... only the one on sata disks not working well. (i use stripped raid set)
the OP use a Power PC G5 and Tiger ... (or this are its profil info)
the apple suggestion about using different busses are good only for 8 Core... I have tryed that, but it does not seems to be helpful for Dual processors machine
I Just do this test recently on my G5...
I use 2X Maxtor IDE drives striped in raid locaded in the G5 ATA buss (usually this buss is connect to the super drive)
I have replaced the superdrive and with a super ATA cable I have modified my G5...
I Can mount 2 additional internal ATA133 HDs instead the Superdrive (that I have on External firewire box)
well.. I use that ATA buss as System 10.5.6 Disk
I don't have any POPs, DROPs and System overload... (obvious the only System overload happens only when a real heavy project run.... but I don't have randomly overloads)
if instead to use "Leopard on Maxtor drives" I start leopard fron 2 X samsung 500GB striped raid disk... (very fast for sustained speed) I got frequently drops with only 10/20 tracks and 3 VST instruments...
on my G5 the issue seems to be strictly related with HDs performances!
    Not randomly at all...
in my case one system works fine... the other one is crappy drops pops!!!
(this every day without any random condition)
OS X require super fast hard drive for Logic... if you use Logic on an empty hard drive it will works better (because the virtual memory is more faster!)
The same "pops, drops issue" happens in OS9.2 and Logic when system virtual Memory was active!

  • Overview processing creates crackles during playback after a take

I'm having this problem with static crackles when playing back a take we just did, and its hard to tell whether or not its on the recording (most of the time its not). Hard to explain that to the musician that just played as well... It seems like the problem is processing 10-12 tracks for their waveform overview again after initial display while tracking. Can you disable this second pass and just keep the original tracking display, then go back later and do a more accurate pass when all tracking is complete?

    Yes, prefs>audio>create waveform after record
    deselect it.
You may want to try swithing the speed of calculation as well

  • New problem - bad cracks during playback

I'm getting back cracks and crackling during playback despite the fact that there is no obvious cause. The cracks happen when I use any effect (though my gut feeling tells me this isn't the underlying problem). I'm using UAD vst plugins but and Adobe effects but I am no where near being maxxed out, only using around 50-60% of my vst power. The cracks happen even when I use Audition's Studio Reverb or graphic eq.only, no vst.
It sounds like a latency type of cracking or the type of cracking that happens when my plugins are maxxed out (nearly 100% on my meter) but as I said, that's not it (although it goes away when I remove all effects, even Audition effects).
The strange thing is I am only working with 3 tracks!!!...2 guitars and vocal. I have many sessions with full band, easily 2 dozen tracks and not had this problem before. But with only 3 tracks...something is screwy.
When I change the latency the cracking gets worse (currently it's at 1.5 seconds).
Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this??? My software is up to date and my system is virus checked. I'm also an experienced Audition user (years).
    Thanks for any ideas.

Hey guys, my audio computer just developed this crackling on playback about 2 weeks ago.
On mastered out audio files, the crackle is not there, but on playback on new projects (started over the last 2 weeks) there is crackle in the playback on all tracks (I get crackling on playback on my speakers and on my headphones).  Even individually, if I mute certain tracks.
I found some weird points when playing with new projects:
-I shut down the computer, and started Audition 2.0 again.  I started a new project @ 48000 Htz and 32 bit sampling.  And there was NO CRACKLING on playback (on speakers, on headphones, on mastered test audio files)
-I went back to my problem projects with crackling playback and, yup, my playback had crackling on them
-I mastered out my origional raw audio tracks (from the crackling project timeline) and put them on my new project timeline, and NO CRACKLING DURING PLAYBACK.... hmmmmmmm.
I have no idea why it's doing this.
But if your project is having playback issues.  Try a full shutdown/reboot, open a new project and do a test record to see if there is crackle.  If no crackle on playback, then go back to your crackling project and master out and re-import your raw audio tracks to your new project timeline
If you guys have found another work-around, or a complete fix, post up and lemme know.

  • My iPhone 5 crackles and pops loudly during calls (with and without speaker phone.)  I'm experiencing this same same issue on my third iPhone.  Is this a common problem?  Short of getting the phone replaced (yet again!) is there a solution?

My iPhone 5 frequently crackles and pops loudly during calls (while using speaker phone, as well as not using speaker phone.)  After being inspected by techs at the Genius Bar, my phone has been replaced twice; thus, I am currently on my third iPhone 5.  Incredibly, I am, yet again, experiencing the exact same issue. Short of getting my fourth iPhone, is anyone aware of a solution?

if it's the exact same issue, either it's a problem with your service or with your software if you're restoring from a backup each time. it's pretty darn near impossible for 3 phones to have the same exact hardware issue, so that's unlikely. is this an at&t iphone? if so, are you continuing to use the same sim card? if so, get a new one and try that out. if that's not the issue, restore the phone as new and make a few phone calls. if the issue's gone away, there's something wrong with your backup

  • Crashes when editing during playback

I have been very frustrated with trying to make edits while logic plays back audio. I've used most other DAWs and never had this problem. It seems like every time I try to make an edit, or pull up a plug in (while mixing), or save the project, playback stops either momentarily if I'm lucky, or more likely altogether. Often I will get a beach ball hang for a minute or more, and sometimes will have to force logic to quit. I have now "built into" my workflow stopping playback before pressing ANY key at all.
I've just seen the discusison on nicing logic, and I've got the script up and running, which does seem to make a general difference, but does not solve this specific problem. CPU is not maxxed or even close, by the way. This is one of the main issues which is forcing me to re-consider my switch to logic a year ago. now that I'm "fast" with the commands, logic can't keep up.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Yes, a song with a bunch of edits will task the hard drive a lot more.
As far as the other things:
    1. I don't do this. I do stop the sequencer to insert a plugin. Saves my speakers and my ears from any pops / etc.
    2. I also don't do this during playback. Why? Because you are writing this crossfade onto the disk, and if you are playing back a large number of tracks...well theres the performance issue again.
    3. I do do this, and have no issue with it so far. My sessions regularly run 24 to 50 audio tracks.
    4. The only editing I do perform when playgin back is basic region length changes, like removing silences between vocal lines. usually because of 2" tape transfers, the noise floor is too high to accurately use the strip silence function properly, so I do it by ear as the song goes by.
I don't usually freeze files, I render them, and remove the plugins. I COMMIT, man. Nothing quite like a commitment.
    Cheers

  • Popping/Crackling in Soundtrack Pro

I recently bought a new Mac Pro (Dual quad 3.0 with 4 GB Memory, tyvm...) and installed STP 1.0.3; I downloaded and installed all available updates.
Problem: when I am using the program, working on a project, both the samples i am
previewing as well as the exported project (exported as a .aif file) have a crackle or popping which is quite severe- I am not clipping, ie, the output levels are OK; I checked all the audio connections (although since it happens while I'm
working on a project and just previewing clips in the browser, I realize audio connectios aren't at fault here.
I am using internal 750 gb hardrives, and have the application on hardrive 1, with my data, samples, etc, on hardrive2.
    Any ideas?
    Thank You-

I found this in the archives: sounds VERY similar- Could this be the problem??
If so, couldn't one just cover the openings????
    See following:
I just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard having waited for ProTools LE to be compatible with the new OS. Now that I upgraded to OS 10.5.4 and ProTools LE 7.4.2, every time I play anything through Soundtrack Pro (v2.0.2) I get clicking or popping or stuttering, whatever you want to call it, during playback. I didn't change any settings, but I'm no sound engineer, so I'm not sure what to check to see what is causing it. I can take the same file and play it through ProTools, Quicktime, iMovie, anything, and it will play fine, just not in Soundtrack Pro. I'm up to date on all software upgrades.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
My particular G5 model has a known bug. Spent over an hour online with an Apple Tech who went through several possibilities until he found the answer. The problem is the optical ports on the backside of the computer. IF they are not being used, there might be an issue with stray or ambient light wreaking havoc with the sample rate of Soundtrack Pro. I'm not making this up. The solution was to go buy a Toslink optical cable and plug it into both ports creating a loop. The sample rate clock was jumping back and forth from 44.1 kHz to 48 kHz and causing the popping when playing anything in Soundtrack Pro. Problem has been solved. It didn't appear until I upgraded to Leopard, have no idea why, but I feel better now that it wasn't something I did that I couldn't figure out.
    Thanks to Apple Tech Support.

  • Distortion/Crackling during Macromedia, avi, or mpeg playb

    Hello,
I have an SB Audigy 2 ZS. A few months ago, I began to notice a very loud distortion/crackling noise during playback of Macromedia flash, avi, or mpeg files. The distortion is present when using speakers or headphones, and only accompanies sound in the files (ie a silent period in the mpeg has no distortion/crackling). Mp3 and aac files work fine, as does audio from cds and dvds. The problem began around the same time that I struggled to install correct drivers for my new TV tuner card, so the TV tuner drivers may have caused the problem.
Since then, I have removed the TV tuner from my system and uninstalled all associtated drivers. I have also tried reinstalling the Audigy drivers numerous times, including a "cleansweep" reinstall. The distortion is present even during a clean boot of windows.
    Here's my system:
    Intel? Pentium? 4 Processor 630 w/HT Technology (3.0GHz,800FSB)GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz (2x52M)256MB PCI Express? x6 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon X600 SE HyperMemory

The next step will be a hard dri've format and windows reinstall, but I'd really like to avoid this. Can anyone give me some suggestions please?
    Thanks!

Maybe you need to install Dell bundled drivers for your card to get 00% compatibility 'back'.
    Also, maybe
    - updating/reinstalling directx, audio/video codecs, etc. common components
    - switching into another device driver mode (DS/MME/WDM/ASIO)
    - checking the audio HW acceleration and SRC quality settings (needs to be set MAX for best possible quality)
    - disabling devices/controllers not needed like Modem, onboard audio/game/MIDI, etc. (from BIOS)
    - trying some other settings w/ SATA controller
    hel

  • Called CL support. No popping/crackling issue with XFI kno

yeah.. after a post by Catherina i decided to post this to make sure you guys see it. If CL closes/deletes this thread they simply acknowledge that they dont want you to know the truth.
i called CL support yesterday around 4ish, and i asked if they got an update on the crackling/popping issue. the reply was "there is no case with popping/crackling issue with XFI that is known". i called again so that i speak with someone else to see if it was the case that only off them was unaware of the situation and got same reply.
the guys attempted to give me the entire troubleshoot again.. i told him i already done all that for the past 5 months bla bla bla.. he offered an RMA with updated firmware... i told him i already got an RMA 2 months ago...
now WTF is going on? are they simply BSing us that they have acknowledged the issue?

    Z3RO-CooL,
I'm not sure what you hope to achieve by starting this thread and essentially calling us liars. Customer Support have to troubleshoot a problem if someone contacts them. They won't have any new info for you yet. Others may contact Support with similar symptoms but resolve them by doing some of the troubleshooting mentioned.
Everything I have told you here is true, we are investigating this and as soon as I have some information for you I will be posting it here.
I'm closing this thread, not to silence you or because I "don't want you to know the truth", but because this thread was only started to cause an argument and I don't see any constructi've discussion coming from this. Please use the other thread to discuss this particular topic (crackling).

  • Fixed Popping/Crackling on X-Fi Titanium Fatality Pro

For those having problems and tried all the IRQ fixes+ unofficial drivers but failed..
You might want to use this DPC latency tool
    http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml
You can read how to use it from the website.
Anyways, I isolated my problem down to my gigabyte motherboard EasyTune software [used it for fan control]. Audio is working fine now.

Re: Fixed Popping/Crackling on X-Fi Titanium Fatality Pro That spikes (they are rear but they do occur)?im geting is during playing World of Warcraft. So when all components are under (some) load. Doing this tests when you dont do anything seems kinda pointless And ye if you dont notice any issues you shouldnt worry about dpc spikes/latency anyway. This was more like and experiment, when i saw people complaining and i notice on nvidia forums that "dpc fixes just missed 96.75 drver release", so i went and check it out what the hell this actualy is. So also people that are runing nvidia cards and have sound issues, update to latest nvidia driver (97.x+) it might resolve your issues. Also as far as i know occesional spikes are to be expected, whats bad is, when you constant latency is high (over 500ms). This shows as unusual fps drops and/or sound crackling. I personaly suspect that lots of problems about this is actualy caused by something else and not creative driver/card. Known "bad" drivers are lots of times also network drivers, so people should keep updated those as well...

  • IDVD encoding causes system failure during burn process

I have iDVD 5 on my work computer (dual 2.7Ghz G5 / 2.5 G RAM), and have burned successfully before my current project.
My current project has a 28:45 movie and I have tried two different themes with different combinations of drop zones (one with the movie as the drop zone and one with stills only) and everything previews okay, but when I start the burn process it will get to a certain point in the encoding and then the whole system crashes. I come back to check on the process, and my screen is filled with black squares with error info in it... (looks like a DOS screen or something) and it says something about system failure and that I need to restart my computer.
I'm so stubborn that I keep trying different combinations of possibilities but I'm having no luck. The movie that it's hangin up on was captured in Final Cut Pro from a VHS, edited in Final Cut to trim the excess black, and exported as a Final Cut Movie that I imported into iDVD.
As I said above, I have burned successfully on this computer and this iDVD, so the fact that this one project refuses to burn is perplexing.
    any thoughts?

A gap in video would be a space between one clip and another. This is a problem when you are editing your footage, not capturing it. In other words, it is a user introduced problem.
In FCP when you say "Ignore Timecode Breaks" it just means to continue capturing video even if there is a timecode break. If you do not select this option, FCP would immediately stop catpturing whenever it hit a timecode break. A timecode break is not the same thing as a gap you create during editing. A timecode break could be as simple as rewinding your camera footage and then recording over it... the timecode now has a break because it is not continuous timecode, it jumps from one timecode to another.
Depending on what device you are capturing from, your audio may come in a few frames before or after the video. This would be especially true for a non-controllable device. It is a simple fix to adjust this as you would have noticed any sync issues right in the timeline during playback.
A system reboot in the middle of encoding is a serious crash... I doubt if it is the footage per se that is causing this to happen. Footage has been known to force an application to abort a process (or stay in an infinite loop), but an actual system shutdown would be extremely rare.
Consider recapturing the footage into a new FCP project and then creating a new iDVD project for it, this will eliminate either a corrupted FCP file or an iDVD project from the equation. Also, are you burning directly to disc or are you preparing a disc image? I'd go with the disc image approach because you can test your final build that way.

The Game Center app is pre installed and cannot be removed from the device.
Best thing to do is move it to the last available screen.
Hold down the Game Center app until all the apps jiggle then sliide the Game Center app to the right from one screen to the next. This requires a bit of finesse, but it's doable.
Press the Home button one time to stop the apps from jiggling.
For the Apple ID issue, try resetting.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
Then try your Apple ID and password for the Game Center app.

  • Hissing/Popping/Crackling/Cracking in iTunes 6.05 w/ Quicktime 7.1

I reformatted and installed Windows 2000 Server. I used to use Windows 2000 Professional, and iTunes worked fine. Now, installing the latest iTunes 6.05 with Quicktime 7.1, I get hissing/popping/crackling/cracking at semi-random intervals (as bizarre as it may sound, with one song it seems to always occur around 10 seconds into the piece if it is the first song I play with iTunes. In another song it tends to be within the first second, but it's not as consistently within that first second as the other is at 10 seconds. After the first crackle, I usually can listen for 2-5 minutes before another crackle occurs.) . I can play the MP3's fine in Quicktime 7.1, VLC, and Windows Media Player 6.4. I'm running a Creative Soundblaster Audigy sound card. I have muted all items in Volume Control excepting Wave and Master. I have experimented toggling with the Quicktime "Sound Out" section (as suggested in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610). I have done various combinations of "safe mode" checked/not checked, 44.1/48/96 kHz, 8/16/24 bit, and Stereo/Quadraphonic. Judging from Creative documentation, it ought be 24 bit/48 kHz, but no combinations worked. I've reverted to iTunes 4 with Quicktime 6? from my iPod CD. Creative EAX and "Sound Enhancer" in iTunes are both disabled, though I have experimented with turning them on and that hasn't helped either. I have used my 5 year old Audigy drivers as well as the latest Audigy drivers. I really don't know what to do.

Both of which come to no resolution.
Just to be thorough, iTunes is installed on my system disk, a 120 gig Seagate hard drive, and my library is located on a RAID 1 array of Western Digital 120 gig hard drives. I have 640 mb of RAM and an Athlon XP 1700+ on an Abit KR7A-RAID.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I found new symptoms to my problem. It seems the cracking only occurs when there is hard drive activity on the hard drive where my music is located. When I move a large file to and from the hard drive, the cracking is non stop. This behavior makes sense when you recall that towards the beginning of every track there is cracking as I think this is when the data is being moved from the hard drive to the RAM.
I don't think this has to do with my music being on a Raid 1 array or the Raid controller since iTunes exhibits the same cracking when playing music off other disks, including those attached to the Raid controller and those not attached.
