Edit Locally: Download of the document fails

Hi all
When I try 'Edit Locally" , its giving an error "The download of the document failed".
Local editing (under CM>Utilities>Editing) is configured correctly. From another portal, edit locally is working fine.
Is there anything else that I have to do for Local editing
Please help me.
Any idea.. I am unable to find a solution

Hi,
the "Edit locally" fonction need to install an activeX to the computer.
The user need to be administrator. Then when for the first time he tries to edit locally, the activeX will install. You can then remove the user from the administrator group.
You need write authorizations in registry (local machine) and to folder C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Temp
If you configured the portal in java mode for local edit, you need to install JRE 1.4.2_x on the computer.

Hello All-
We've run into an issue on our portal (EP7, SPS17) where users can not Edit Locally. The command returns the warning "The download of the document failed".
I've checked the logs and the configuration of Local Editing in System Administration and nothing seems out of place. Furthermore, the same configuration seems to function fine in our test environment.
Any ideas?

No, it isn't. Pages 5 isn't compatible with Pages 4.3 as it is lacking more than 90 features that Pages 4 has. So when you open a Pages 4 document in Pages 5 only the simplest documents will look the same in Pages 5.
Pages 4 can't open Pages 5 documents at all!! You have to export back to Pages 09 as I said above.
You probably will be more happy if you just use Pages 4 (Pages 09). There are many threads in this forum that describes the lack of compatibility between the two versions. Pages 5 is in my view not Pages anymore.
If you don't desperately need Pages 5 for moving documents over iCloud to new iOs devices don't use it.

I forgot to save the pages file, I do back up on time machine could a temporary file be in there somewhere? Despite what Apple and its employees say Pages is not a 100% replacement for Word.
Pages files exported to .doc will have minor to major differences.
You should always have a Pages version. Exporting is only so non Mac and non Pages users may read it, and even there you should use .pdf to keep its appearance as close as possible to the original.
It sounds like you used a lot of Pages' features which turned out to not have Word equivalents.

(1)It is possible to do so if I open the document in Acrobat 8.
(2) Is there any work around solution for X-pro ?
I create a draft document and send it for approval with “draft” watermark.
I receive it back after approval with the approver’s signature.
Then I have to remove the “draft” watermark.
How can I do it?

Move to the end of the document fails in a created long document

Move to the end of the document or Command-Down Arrow does not work in a couple of my documents and I am worried they are corrupted. I love this function and want to restore it. Has this happened to anyone else and if so have you discovered a solution. Let me know…

For years my pdf docs downloaded for viewing or editing as normally sized documents.
Now when I pull up a pdf from file, it becomes too large or becomes normal page size but many of the lines of text are blacked out. How do I correct it to go back to the previous default page size?

Are you opening those files in Acrobat or Reader? You can set the default page size in the Page Display preferences. Choose Acrobat/Reader > Preferences in Mac OS, or Edit > Preferences in Windows to access the preference settings. Do the black lines only appear when the PDF is zoomed in? Or are they there regardless of the page magnification?

When I downloaded a recent iTunes update, I received a message saying it was successfully downloaded but the program fails to launch

I recently updated my iTunes which was previously operating very well. After I successfully downloaded and installed the update, the program no longer opens either from the desktop or the task bar. I am using Windows 7. I set the pop-up blocker to always allow pop-ups from Apple and the compatability shows compatable with Windows 7. Any Suggestions for how I can get back in business?

Are you downloading iTunes form an Apple website or somewhere else? If the answer is somewhere else, try downloading it from Apple. Click on iTunes in the black menu bar above and go from there.
Let us know what happens.

Edited version downloaded not the explicit one

I purchased Thrift Shop (Macklemore) but recieved the edited version, not the explicit one. When I look at it in ITunes and I preview it, it's the explicit one but it says "Purchased". How do I get the correct (explicit) version?

This item may have been mislabelled in the store. You'll need to contact the iTunes Store support team via the "Report a problem" links in your account history. Go to Store > View Account > Purchase History.

Getting error while trying to edit locally the document in KM of portal.

Hi all
we have configured file server in km portal as fsdb mode in portal (ep 7 sp 14). We were able to edit locally the documents . But all of a sudden from some of the PCs we are getting the following error while trying to edit the documents.
The download of the document failed .
Is there any PC specific configuration required? For the same user we are able to edit the documents from some PCs but from another it is not working.

You have to set your activex control properly. then only edit locally in KM will work.

Edit Locally Error in download of document

I am facing an error in the Edit Locally option of the KM. The document is getting downloaed,saved and opened when accessed by clicking over it.But when trying to edit locally it gives an error saying:"The download of the document failed"
I have not faced this error before and now dis is faced by all the users of the portal.

Yes acivex control is properly installed on the local machines.
Also checked the URL genertaor service and it has the hosname of the server.
Edit locally was working fine till a week back.
At that time a porblem occured regarding the tablespace of KM, and at that time the tablespace
was increased. After that, the Edit Locally started throwing the described error.

SP13: html file - edit locally

We recently upgraded our system to 04s sp13.
After upgrade, when trying to edit locally an html file in KM I recieve an error:
The download of the document failed
After that I sometimes even get the Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. error.
To me it looks like a bug, and I'm going to open an oss message regarding it but I wanted to know if anyone encountered this before.
The edit online option works fine.

the docservice.log file should bring some clarity here. Anyway there is one thing known which is specific to HTML scenario. My colleague Catherine will update your message tomorrow on this: It could be that the url path name is too
long. There is currently a limitation of 105 characters for HTML resources. In this case the log would state the root cause of issue: 'WARNING: After shorten path, filename C:\Documents and Settings\<userID>\Local Settings\Temp\docservice\..\xy.html seems to long!'
Solution: NW 7.0 SPS 15 will clear this.
Workaround:
a) Using a different, shorter TEMP directory on the clients.
b) Usage of Applet option for Local Editing instead of currently used
ActiveX.
Just for the records: Exclude also that no HTML stylesheet filter is assigned to the repository. Such stylesheet could also lead to an error with
html files.

Error when trying to open, edit & save the document from email link

Hi,
The error occurs when user tries to open the document from the email link (after the document is "shared" with them.
The recipient has been given edit rights. When the document is opened it is opened in read only. The recipient will click "Edit Document" and then they receive an error
"The file or folder name http://servername/sites/documents/Shared Documents/IT/Test/TESTfile.xlsx?NoRedirect=true' contains characters that are not permitted. Enter a different name."
Any suggestions please.

Mine happens when I click on the link from the email body. An exact thread I found :

But no solution is mentioned there as well.

Java Script error with EDIT LOCALLY

HI All
We're on NW2004s, users run Windows XP with I.E 7.
Im trying to edit one document in my KM with the "Edit Locally" option. The moment I click on this option, it shows a Java Script error on the page and shows that the excel sheet is still opening (Loading....). It never opens.
The Java Script reads -> Object doesnt support this property or method.
Do I need to do any configurations ? Any clues ?

You can also verify the download as follows:
       1.      In the Web browser of the user, from the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
       2.      In the General tab, click the Settings button.
       3.      In the Settings window, click the View Objects button.
       4.      In the Download Program Files window, if any of the following appear in the Program Files list, then the ActiveX control was downloaded:
¡        ExpBaseNegotiator
¡        ExpApplSelect
¡        ExpApplShareX
The above files are not there in my Downloaded program files window. Which means my active x is not enabled.
Any idea where can I get these files ?
