Edit nested sequence, while seeing result

Pardon the elementary question, I searched around the forums to find that other people have much more involved workflows than mine. Maybe there is a simple answer.
When editing, I have dozens of tracks of different elements, like background footage, graphic elements, titles, animations that are all being composited. For manageability, I will take a bunch of clips and nest them. If I need to edit something about this nested sequence, I double click it and make the change. The problem is that I don't know how to view the effect of that change while making the edit because the program monitor only shows the current sequence. How can I work with timing and positioning within a nested sequence so that I can see the effect that the edit will have in the sequence that the nested element has been placed?
Thanks

Don't be so quick to say it can't be done. It sounds like we are thinking of two seperate things. I am not trying to view two comps at once, although that too can be done in AE.
The result I am looking for in Premiere can be done easily in After Effects by locking the preview.
2 Comps
Comp A has Comp B "nested" in it
Click the lock in the Comp A Preview Tab
Double-click Comp B, it opens and creates a second comp window (similar to the program monitor)
Now you can work in Comp B while watching the result in Comp A
This is basic compositing stuff.  From what I gather, I should not be nesting things until I feel comfortable that their timing will need no further editing? I'm just learning about the intended use here, and what the software was intended for.
Thanks for any constructive feedback.

i've already nest and render a whole 3 mins video. now i would like to make changes in some parts of video. how do i edit the rendered video?

  • Offline edit, timecode and nested sequence question

I'm working from DVcam dubs on a 10 song, 5 camera video shoot. It will be mastered from original HDCam tapes eventually. Too keep things orderly I planned to create a sequence for each song, edit from a multiclip, then dump each finished song segment into a new master segment. However when I ran a test to see if this would work it seems that the new master sequence time codes only refer to the time codes from the individual song sequences, not the original tape (each clip starts at 01:00:00;00). Thus when I go to recapture from the original HD tapes, the time codes would be off. Is there a way to make this process work or should I be editing everything into one master sequence right from the start? I plan on making an offline copy of the final sequence using Media Manager so when I take it to the final production house they can just capture the final sequence with handles, not all 6 hours of tape. It's just cuts and dissolves. Any workflow suggestions would be appreciated.

The clips should still reference their original timecode on the tapes as long as you have not replaced the clips themselves with proxy clips or self-contained movies that have had their timecode modified. This should not be affected by nesting sequences.
You should probably collapse your multiclips before running Media Mangler.
I actually use the proxy clips method often when working with multiclip. As you are aware, the multiclip can only be as long as the longest angle, and you cannot have multiple clips in one angle, so what to do if several tapes are captured in pieces? -
I create a sequence which is an image of each tape, with the starting timecode modified to match the tape's timecode. I then export these to reference movies which I re-import to FCP. I then assign the relevant reel names to these proxy clips, and create my longer multiclips with these.
I cut my multiclip sequence, collapse it and use MM to create offline:remove unused. It creates a new sequence which correctly references my tapes and timecode. I was amazed the first time this worked for me.
    Hope this helps.

  • Each edit is taking 5-10 seconds to process in some of my project file's nested sequences. What can I do?

I edit a weekly news show. For this show, I have created a Project File that I re-use as a template every week. It's a highly nested template, with a sequence for every used material (the anchorman’s footage, the news set, the media playing over the anchorman’s shoulder, the lower thirds, etc). It has three different camera angles in a multicam sequence, each sequence sharing the same nested sequences but just resized to look like a different camera angle.  To make this easier to understand, here's an episode (explicit):
SKATELINE - Cory Kennedy, David Gonzalez, Jimmy Carlin In Enjoi Oververt and more.. - YouTube
In the past, the template has worked perfectly. However, everytime Adobe has a major update and I update the project file, for some reason, some of the sequences perform very sluggishly. With Adobe's recent update, the sequences for the anchorman’s footage and the media playing behind him are very slow to make edits in. Every action I do takes 10 seconds to process, even moving an image. However, if I work in the master sequence (With everything put together) everything runs perfectly smooth when I make edits.
In an attempt to fix this problem, I decided to recreate the project file from scratch, with the new update, but even then, my "anchorman footage" and "media behind him" sequences are very slow. What's even more bizarre is if I select a piece of footage in the anchorman sequence, my entire program sometimes crashes. I have tried rendering the sequences to help performance, but that hasn't worked. I have tried installing CUDA Drivers to use the CUDA version of the Mercury Playback Engine on my Macbook Pro Retina, but it also still isn’t working.
So why do you think that my sequences are operating so slowly? What could be causing it? Could it be that each sequence is used several times in the multicam sequence? If so, why has it worked smoothly until now? What can I do?

Yes same issue for me also, working in mutli cam nestings
Very Very Sluggish Performance, semi hangs in PP, if you actually wait long enough, or leave it hung whilst you do a post on here, for a few minutes then it may come back to response.
The issue is defo to do with nesting, I have tried turning off audio wave forms, which helps in the multicam nest edit but as soon as you put that sequence into a third nest then the sluggishness is major.
Basically, this looks to be the same issues that have been reported before with the new update.

  • Multicam edit from nested sequence -- no audio?

Can someone please help me explain why I can change the video tracks as if they are multicam in my nested sequence, but I can't change the audio?
I created a sequence called "sync" which basically is all of my cameras, each on their own individual tracks, sync'd with each other, as they turned on and off throughout the shoot.
I cut this 'sync' sequence into my main timeline 'master', and then enabled multicam. I can now beautifully cut between cameras using the 'multicam' window and clicking on the preview of the shot I want as it plays. I've made my visual edit, but now I want to go back and choose my audio tracks, which it seems I can't do...
Furthermore, it seems that my nested sequence, which has video cut into V1 and audio cut into Stereo track A1, is only playing stereo track A2 from 'sync' when it's played on 'master'. It seems to be somewhat dependent on the tracks I have enabled on 'sync', but not entirely:
    1) If all audio tracks are enabled on 'sync', only A2 will play from A1 on 'master'
    2) If all audio tracks except for A2 are enabled on 'sync', no audio will play on 'master'
    3) If only A2 is enabled on 'sync', only A2 will play from 'master'.
Is there any documentation about this behavior? Is it a bug? Is there any way to select a different audio track from 'sync' from the multicam edit window?
    Thanks in advance!

    OK, maybe I should clarify...
Only A2 is coming through, NOT A1 -- so that's inconsistent with what you're saying. I have not checked Audio Follows Video, because that's not the bahvior I want. I'd like to be able to choose from any of the video tracks. Is that not possible in Premiere Pro?
Also, do you think it makes a difference that I'm 'multicam editing' from a regular sequence (with multicam enabled) as opposed to an actual multicam sequence?
    thanks for the help.

  • Time remapping a nested sequence results in black/empty video

    Hey!
I have a long sequence (47 minutes), which I wish to time remap (to increase the speed at certain Keyframes). I have therefore nested the sequence into a Master Sequence, where I perform the time remapping. However I experience what appears to be a weird bug: At a certain frame the video turns black/empty and stays that way - even though the original sequence still has video material.
It doesn't help splitting the clip (nested sequence) up in smaller clips and time remap those individually - the empty frames just appear earlier in each clip.
    Export works fine
When I export the sequence as Media, the output seems fine however.
I hope, that you are able to help me or tell me, if I'm doing something wrong.
    Thanks in advance!
    Hardware info
I work on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014).

it depends on how powerful the video card is, and how many accelerated effects are being used. it might slow you down a little, or alot. if you have an intel graphics, they arent very powerful to begin with, basically just good for browsing the web. however premiere tries to use them and they cause lots of problems. im not sure if its premiere or intel thats causing the problem, but they dont play nice together.  if you have the nvidia version macbook, you might have opencl or cuda available in the renderer menu. if it was on opencl, could try cuda, or opencl if it was on cuda.

When adding a directional blur to adjustment layer or a nested sequence in MPE hardware mode the sides get dark (alpha channel shows).

Seen this issue in a previous version of Premiere. Think it was fixed then, but now its back.

This is how it looks for me when I take a extension with a alpha channel over a simple BG and turn Cuda on then turn Cuda off.
The image above is with GPU acceleration turned on.
This image below this sentence is with software on.
In a way it appears simliar to your findings since when my GPU accleration is turned on you can see a white boarder creeping up from the bottom and top but with it off you don't see it.
However when I turn the blur up higher and try it again I get these results.
GPU On in the image directly below.
GPU off in the image below this sentence.
I'm using the exact same blur settings in both images... In the top image you can see that white is taking over the picture.
This has GPU on in the image below this sentence.
This is Software only on in the pic below this sentence.
Not really sure if this confirms anything for you or not though. Just figured I'd post it cause the issue seemed intresting to me. Anyways though here were my findings.

  • Time remapping / slow motion extremely jumpy with nested sequence!

I have just finished the rough-cut of a ceremony when I went back to add effects-- slow motion, color correct, etc. only to find that ANY time-change is jittery-- extremely jittery, like it's skipping frames.
For trial purposes I created a new timeline with only one video clip placed multiple times. I reduced one to 50% with frame-blending, the other 50% with NO frame-blending and the final using time re-mapping with frame-blending. At 50% I don't expect fluid movement, but they are all acceptable... Until I put a different timeline in the timeline (I think it's a "nested sequence").
When speed is slowed on ANY nested sequence it is jittery. Whether it is a single nested sequence or a multi-camera sequence, it jumps.
Has anyone else had this problem?! Is this a bug? I never noticed it until this wedding. I am using CS3 and I cannot afford the time to re-edit this ceremony with 2.0.... Unless I have no choice.

    Hi Wil,
I have tried using both. Time remapping on the clip (not nested) works fine, so does 'speed change.' But both time remapping and speed change result in jumpy frames when applied to a nested sequenced clip.
I tried this on another (much lower system) and have found the same results. I am begining to think it is the footage but it seems odd that it is perfect when applied to a clip in the timeline but NOT to a timeline in the timeline (nested).
I am on vacation and do not have access to a faster machine until next late next week but for now I will try the export again to be sure Encore sees the same thing.
I am dumbfounded because I had been using 1.5, then 2.0 and now CS3 for weddings for years and have never noticed this. I have noticed it on the both the last project and now this current one.
I thought it could have been the original footage (or a camera problem except that the problems are not there until a nested sequence comes along. I will try moving the footage to my internal drive now and see what happens...
Thank you so far for giving me ideas.

  • Copy and Past Nested Sequence loses link to Master

Has anyone else noticed this problem? I've got a nested sequence that I'm cutting and editing around and most of the time everything is fine. If I doubleclick the nested sequence in my main sequence, it opens the nested one and if I then double click the nested sequence in my Browser, it goes to that same sequence. Changed in one will show up in the other.
BUT, if I copy and paste the nested sequence in my main sequence, the new pasted version will open a NEW sequence that isnt linked to the Master in my Browser. So now, changes in the new nested sequence or the Master dont show up in the other one.
Is this just me thats having this problem?

I can see where you are coming from, and where the engineers at Apple were coming from, but I strongly disagree with this behavior. In my opinion, if you want to have a separate copy of a sequence, you should make a copy in your bin and bring that in. That way your new sequence HAS a master sequence and you can CHANGE the name, both of which help to avoid confusion.
So, maybe you're right and most people prefer it the way that it is, but let me explain the workflow I'm using and you'll see why this is so absolutely frustrating to me.
I'm editing a documentary in Chinese and as I dont speak Chinese, I've had it all translated, and added subtitles to the interview footage so I can edit it. And to make absolutely sure that the subtitles and footage stay in sync (since I wouldnt know it if they werent) I've put all the footage into separate sequences and I'm editing those sequences as if they are raw footage.
And due to this, I'm throwing sequences around every which way while I try to create my story. And sometimes that means copying a series of edits into a new timeline to work on separately from the larger project. And as I see it, there is NO WAY to do that currently and keep the sequences linked to the masters, other than pulling up each master sequence into the Viewer, changing the in and out points to match the clip I want and Inserting it into a new timeline. And when you want to copy over a segment that has perhaps 20 edited bits, thats WAY too much trouble.
So I'll admit that I'm editing in a somewhat abnormal way due to my subtitles, but as there is no way to copy and paste sequences and keep the link to the Master, I think the behavior is broken.
Oh, and the "Tools->Create Master Clips" command, which is supposed to relink clips to their masters if there are any in the Browser, doesnt work for Nested Sequences.

  • Does a nested sequence keep its render?

I have a nested sequence within my Main Sequence.
Within the nested sequence is Adobe Dynamic Linked clips to After Effects.
I cannot edit these while un-rendered.
If I take the hours to render the data within the nested sequence, and then when moving that sequence in the main sequence, will Premiere have to re-render the initial data?
Or, does it have a memory of the data that is rendered within the nested sequence so it won't be as graphic intensive?

Run a short test and see for yourself.

  • IPhoto '11 Edits are lost while thumbnails still shows the edited version

    Hi,
I'm using iPhoto '11 v9.4.3 ( Build 720.91) on Mac OS X v10.8.5 and have my iPhoto Library on a external HDD. One month back, I had moved to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5 but then reverted back to Mountain Lion and iPhoto v9.4.3 ( with the help of iPhoto Library Manager v4.0.9 ) due to performance issues on my iMac. Ever since I have been having some inconsistencies in my iPhoto Library, specifically w.r.t. the edits.
iPhoto does seem to retain my edits after a while. Though the thumbnail view ( or browse mode ) shows the edited version of the file, however double-clicking the file opens up the original unmodified version ( in the edit or single photo view mode ).
    Browse Mode - below
Single Photo View Mode - below
For the first time, the problem seemed to get resolved for a while, if I do a Repair Permissions on the iPhoto Library ( by pressing Option + Command ). However, now even that has no effect. Even after reparing permissions, Everytime I use the "Repair Permissions" option, I see the iPhoto message "There is a problem accessing one or more files in your iPhoto Library. Do you want iPhoto to repair permissions for this library for you?". Also, The File ->Reveal in Finder menu shows that the "Modified File" option is greyed out.
I have tried the following so far ..
    1. Repair Permissions using iPhoto : Used to solve the issue earlier, but no effect now.
    2. Repair Library using iPhoto : No joy
    3. Manualy changed the permissions for the iPhoto Library & its contents using Terminal command ( sudo chmod -R 777 * ) : No joy
This had happened 2 weeks earlier too, and was only resolved by deleting the whole Event and re-importing the files as a new event and then editing the files which has stuck so far without any issues.
    Any suggestions ??
    Regards,
    RP.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Freaky nested sequences

    Hi, anyone experienced the following:
When double clicking on a nested sequence in the timeline to edit that sequence, any edits or changes you make to that sequence do not update back in the parent timeline. For instance if you cut a clip out or rearrange clips in the nested sequence then go back to the parent timeline you see the sequence as it was before you made those changes. Then go back to the nested sequence timeline and see all your edits/changes have been lost!!
The only workaround I see is to remove the nested sequence from the parent timeline, make your edits/changes then drop the sequence back into the parent timeline.
Am I missing something? I thought it would be a case of the nested sequence auto-updating itself in the parent timelline after any changes made, as for example in after effects.

    Hello Chris...
Did your nested sequence need rendering when you created it? If so, the problem is caused by FCP referencing the origonal render files, which themselves act as little QT clips.
After you have made your changes in the 'open' nested sequence, back in your main sequence, you need to force the nested seq to render again. You can do this by quickly moving the opacity overlay line up and down, or disabling - re-anabling the clip. The changes will now be recognised.

  • Audio mixes not correct when inserting nested sequence.

Ah, yet another anomalous behavior issue...
I commonly edit packages for a program I regularly work on, then drop the nested sequences into the show timeline...it's easier that way, and the EP likes it that way. However, I occasionally come across an issue where the nested audio sequence doesn't "remember" the mix levels of the component parts. For instance, I just made an audio adjustment to the open of the show, and dropped the nested open into the show timeline...where it promptly "forgot" the music rampdown I'd just done.
The workaround? I slipped the audio track, blowing out the render files...then dragged the clip back into sync, re-rendered again...and then the mix stuck.
Probably I should do this sort of stuff in Soundtrack, eh?

FCS has lots of quirks (I hesitate to call them bugs because they are not always repeatable). Still, people need to keep in mind that the FCS suite is built upon an ancient (in computer years) core technology (and code). While everyone is holding their breath for 64bit thinking it will be faster, I'm cringing because I know what a massive bit of code this suite represents and the thought that a complete rewrite will get everything correct is simply unimaginable.
[/rant on] My simple hope is they do not keep chasing after these consumer formats (including BR) and simply focus on making the core of the program function exactly as it should - especially media management. The whole 32bit/64bit nonsense is a distraction. Stuff that is stable and works the same every time - even if a little quirky- is MUCH more valuable in the professional environment than dumping in loads of new stuff. [/rant off]
    Have fun.

  • A question in regards to a nested sequence

I'm assembling many sequences into a FINAL sequence, and I noticed while checking Item Properties that the "little"sequences in the Final Sequence have Field Dominance set to None or Non Set, but when I check the same - little sequences' Item Properties in the Browser they have Field Dominance set to Lower, Even First.
Question #1: IS THIS something to be concerned with? or - can I proceed, and my final, assembled "big" sequence will be OK?
I already rendered all of the "little" sequences, but when they are put into the final "big" sequence, I see some grey within the blue (rendered line on a top of the Timeline's audio/video bar), and in those spots (when hover the mouse over there) it says: Audio: Media Files or Video: Media Files instead of "Rendered", as it does say in a majority of the render two bars on a top of the Timeline.
Question #2: Is THIS something to be concerned with? Should I try to render those spots, or - can I proceed, and my final, assembled "big" sequence will be OK?
It is an important project, so I would like to do it as good as I can... Thank you.

Thank you so much! YEs - it is a DV (NTSC) sequence/es.
..so the "Media File" instead of the "Rendered" is OK, and it just does not need to be rendered - that's great (I know about the "other" colors), and I will definitely do the Mixdown.
Thank you again, and if you have ANY additional tips for such a nested sequence (comprised out of 40+ "little" sequences) - please let me know (I inserted a 2 sec Slug at the very beginning of the "big" sequence (that nests all the "little" ones, so I thought that perhaps that Slug might create a "NONE" in the Item Properties for all the rest ..?)

  • Can one jump to time in nested sequence

I have two sequences, SEQ-A and SEQ-B, and SEQ-B is included (nested) inside SEQ-A.
If I am watching SEQ-A and and find a point in time I need to change something in SEQ-B, how I can go to SEQ-B at the point in time I am watching in SEQ-A? How can I know "what time it is" in SEQ-B? Seems like I should be able to see that - it seems very pertinent.
I hope I am explaining it correctly. Basically, the CTI in SEQ-A may not always reflect the same point in time in SEQ-B. I can't imagine I am left to guess where I should go to do a precise edit in SEQ-B.
I know there must be a way.
    Paul

I wouldn't mind being able to see the time of the selected clip too. Like when you hover the cursor over the clip, you see duration, in-time out-time, but what about CTI location for the selected or cursor hovering clip...
That's useful info too. But your tip works well, even though targeting the layer is a bit out of the way.
It would be nice to have the option when double clicking a nested sequence to go to the CTI (if available) - or for example CNTRL+Double Click or something.
