"Edit original" problem

Hello. I have used Photoshop 7 and Indesign CS4 for some years. I just did a reformat and reinstalled them. My problem is, when I want to "edit original" image, whereas it USED to open the image in Photoshop, now it opens in another image program. How can I make Indesign open it in Photoshop, like it used to?

Let's see if I can remember what the Dilaogs look like in XP
You must be logged in with an account that has Administrator priviliges. Open Windows Explorer and show the menu bar if it isn't already, then click the Tools menu and choose Folder Options. In this dialog, click on the File Types tab, then scroll down to the extension for the image type you want to change and select it. You should be see a box that has and "Opens with" listing and a "Change" button which you should be able to click to open a dialog to allow you to pick another program. You may have to browse tothe Photoshop directory and pick the Photoshop.exe from this dialog if it doesn't appear in a list.

  • InDesign v 3.0 -- Linked files & Edit Original command problems

I am running InDesign v 3.0 and Photoshop CS5 on a new Mac Pro.  When I use the Links pallet, after having selected a linked image with the black arrow, and choose "Edit Original", the image file will open in Apple Preview, rather than in Photoshop CS5.  How do I specify it to open in PSCS5?  Also, the "Update Link" menu is always greyed out so I cannot select it.  Thanks!

In the Finder, select the image type you want to open in Photoshop (TIFF, JPEG, etc.). Choose File > Info.  In the Open With section, choose Photoshop CS5 from the list of applications. Click Change All.

  • Question about "Edit Edit Original", and a question about efficiency.

I have a background image that I have imported (placed) inside my Indesign document. Problem is that I can't tell how the image will look against the other Indesign layers until I actually import "place" the image. I find myself having to keep going back into photoshop to adjust the hue/saturation or use the brush tool for adjustments. I then save, and from Indesign I update the link.
Having to do this 6 or 7 times in a row until I am satisfied, seems like a huge waste of time. It just seems like it would be SO much easier and less time consuming if I could edit my image in the Indesign image. Is there a workaround?
Here is an analogy. To me it's like an artist painting, but having to run into another room to dip his brush. He rushes back to his painting only to find that he needed just a little bit more yellow added to his white...so he has to run all the way back into the paint room to dip his brush again. I'm sure there is a reason for this work method in Indesign, but I'm just a little confused with it.
Question #2: I have tried going to "Edit>Edit original" in InDesign. Problem is, that the "preview" app pops up instead of photoshop, because I like my psd's and jpgs to automatically open in preview for quick viewing purposes. I've read that the work around is to go into Bridge and change the way a program opens a certain type of image. I did this..I changed it so Photoshop and Indesign should open jpgs by default, yet still allow the osx operating system to still open them in "preview". I tried restarting Indesign to see if it was just something that required a restart to take effect. It still opens "Preview" when I go to Edit>Edit Original.

CS4 adds an edit with feature...other than that sorry, Photoshop is
where you'll need to do the editing.

  • Edit original cannot save image

Hi, have a strange problem for few days. If I edit image (PSD) in InDesign with "Edit original" command in Photoshop sometimes after editing image I get message "Could not save "C:.../......psd" because the file is already in use or was left open" when I try to save it. If I close the file in InDesign I can save the image again in PhotoShop. Happens not all of the time. I'm not working with files on server. It's just me alone...
Anybody experienced this kind of behavior?

  • InDesign CS3 bug for "Edit Original"

    Hi,
I have laid out an InDesign document with lots of photos (JPG), with each frame showing the photo at a certain 'crop level' (or % scale relative to the original photo). Let's say I have a frame in which the photo is scaled at 20%. If I try to edit this ('Edit Original') in Photoshop to enhance it, after making changes and saving & closing it, I return back to InDesign. I find this photo to be entirely different scale (the one chosen by InDesign is totally random, and certainly not the original one (so in the example above it will be not 20%, it could be 38%, 48% or whatever, but not the one I had before I started editing the photo).
This is very annoying as I have to remember how the photo was set up in the frame, and fix it after finishing the editing step.
Does any one know if this is a known bug and what is the work around to this problem?
The whole reason for me to use InDesign was to be able to layout my pages perfectly and then edit only those photos that were selected. This bug is making my life miserable :-(
    Thx for any help/Regards,
    Sandeep

    Hi,
I think the "mystery" is solved. The problem occurs ONLY on the portrait photos, and because of the peculiarity of various SW programs (even though they are all from Adobe). I can now recreate the scenario at will, even for a smaller test document with 1 image.
This is what I have discovered so far. InDesign does have the dimensions from the original photo (that's why it will keep the correct settings regardless of how many times you make changes to the ID document or move/resize the rectangle 'linking' to the picture). The problem comes from the fact that photoshop changes some of the EXIF tags "logically".
EXIF tags (I am showing only the relevant ones) for the original photo are the same as the one 'exported' from Photoshop Elements 6.0. They are as follows:
    Orientation : Rotate 90 CW
    XResolution : 72
    YResolution : 72
    ResolutionUnit : inches
    ExifImageWidth : 3888
    ExifImageHeight : 2592
Software : Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0
Note that my actual photo is in the 'portrait' mode, so width should be 2592 (smaller) and height should be 3888 (larger) - but the orientation of "Rotate 90 CW" is read and honored by InDesign, so I did not need to 'manually' rotate it when placing the file. Now I set the scale to 10% because my rectangle was small. When exporting the photo from my album, the Software tag was attached by PE6.0 as you can see above. In my original camera based file, this tag was missing, but otherwise everything is was same.
AFTER I edited the photo in Photoshop to change its shadows/highlights, levels, etc. when I saved the photo, EXIF tags became:
    Orientation : Horizontal (normal)
    XResolution : 72
    YResolution : 72
    ResolutionUnit : inches
    ExifImageWidth : 2592
    ExifImageHeight : 3888
Software : Adobe Photoshop CS3 Windows
So, you can see that Photoshop changed the orientation to "normal" and also adjusted the Width and Height to support that orientation (I did not notice that quickly enough:-().
What is strange is that, instead of maintaining my scale at 10%, after 'updating the modified link', InDesign changes the scale to 15% (if you do the math, the original horizontal dimension of 3888 is exactly 1.5 times the new dimension of 2592!) so it must keep the link information in some other way that it recomputes to be 15%. BTW, the X & Y values of the placed image were also multiplied by 1.5. That's how I was seeing the changed scales, as well as X, Y values after updates. The net orientation of the photo is not affected (at least for the photos from this camera), but it could as well.
I am much happier that at least I understand the problem! This of course supports all of you who were recommending to 'prep' the files before you start. I'd also add that don't just prep them with any batch tool, but do it with the tool that you are going to use to edit. BECAUSE...
This problem can occur any time I mix and match my editing software. I am going to check the behavior of LightRoom (since I have just got it, I am not as comfortable to work with it as Photoshop - and of course the styles of these 2 products are very different). I have never used the Camera Raw 4.5 (or 5 that comes with PS CS4), but will have to be careful about that too.

  • InDesign Edit Original

    Hi
Im a photographer and use InDesign creating wedding albums which involve continually editing graphic (tiff and jpeg). I use the function, Edit Original, by right click and selecting from the popup menu. As of last night the option doesnt appear, also if I use the Edit/edit original the option is greyed out.
Totally confused as to why I have lost this option, hoping for your help.
    Thanks Gary

    Hi
May have found the problem. System Restore point on the 13th May event, Software Distribution Service 3.0. I restore before this event and now all is working, edit original is back in the pop-up menu and working. Now i am wondering if this is an Adobe upgrade, if so, removing the Edit Original option is a backward step!
If anyone can throw some light on this I am interested in knowing how to stop this change.
    Thanks

  • Photoshop opens a separate window every time i select edit original in InDesign

I'm running CS5 and have a problem when editing linked files from InDesign.
    As an example:
    • I have an InDesign file that has a Photoshop file linked to it.
    • I need to edit the linked file so i use the 'Edit Original' function in the Links Panel - this open the link in Photoshop.
    • I edit and save but leave the file open
    • InDesign updates the change but i need to change something else
    • I use 'Edit Original' again but instead of taking me straight back to the PSD file i was just working on, Photoshop opens a new window that i am supposed to make changes to
    • If i was to make 5 changes, there would be 5 separate windows open in Photoshop
    • Closing the file at the end of each change isn't an option as some Photoshop files exceed 1.5GB
    Any suggestions...?

I'd expect a poweruser to go to their Keyboard preferencepane to enable standard F keys.
When you buy an Apple computer without loading it with software when would you use those keys? I can't think of one application that uses it, other than the obvious things like CTRL+F2 and the like that hardly anyone uses and I'd consider only there for strict keyboard jocks. After years of new computers having to disable the hide dock shortcut for feather it shouldn't be a crazy thing to expect someone to find their keyboard preferences if they demand that functionality. Heck, even Adobe just dropped that shortcut in CS4.
Either that or ask for apple to make 140 key keyboards.

    > but i would much prefer the link to automatically update once changes have been made - as it should.
I concur, and am a little frustrated with suggestions that you should "simply" flip between apps. That isn't a solution, it's what you're forced to do because things aren't working properly.
I see you have been asking in the InDesign forum. I am surprised no one there suggested trashing your preferences. I would start there, I would also consider trashing Photoshop's preferences (I think it's much the same deal as ID, but you'd better check.)
I wonder what happens when you use Edit With > Photoshop. Does that behave the same?
And I can't help but wonder if it isn't something in your system. Does double-clicking a PSD in Finder work properly -- and twice in a row? Do you notice anything unusual at all? What about applets that commandeer shortcuts? Grasping at straws, but sometimes the way to fix a problem is to look where it can't be.

  • Edit original

when control-clicking on a picture in In-Design to edit original, my .psd file opens in Photoshop, I make my edits but when I click "save" it tells me it can't save because the file is already in use or was left open. This doesn't happen all the time but happens enough to prompt me to investigate. Any ideas or suggestions out there?

This sounds like an old Photoshop problem especially on Windows.
Search your harddrive for psicon.dll and rename it psicon.dll.old. Reboot.

  • In LR 5  Edit In problem

In LR5 in Photo - Edit In - I go straight to Photoshop, I do not get the dialogue box with the 3 options, i.e. Edit a Copy with LR adjustments, Edit a Copy, or Edit Original.    I am quite sure that somehow I disabled this dialogue box but how do I get it back.
I am not a techie so keep it simple please if you can help.
    Thanks

Hi John, thanks for that, I have done that but now that button is just greyed out with nothing happening.  Will quit LR and close my computer and see if that solves the problem with the reset.

  • Error: Could not edit original smart object ...

Hi - I'm getting the following error when double clicking on a Smart Object in Photoshop (CS4)
"Could not edit original smart object because the application which created the smart obejct could not be launched."
    Notes
    1. The SO was pasted into the psd file moments before from Illustrator.
    2. Both applications are open
    3. Both files sit on the same disk.
    4. XP Pro.
Does anyone have an idea how to get PS to launch its sister program?
    Thanks,
    Sean

HI, I just had the same problem with cs5 on win7. Photoshop cs5 would not open a smart object created in AI CS4 into CS5.
Turns out I had, somehow, lost all my file associations to .ai and .eps files. When I went into properties and told win 7 to open .ai and .eps files with illy all my troubles went away.
Hope my solution helps someone else with the same prob.

could not edit original smart object because the application which created the smart object could not be launched

    Hi there,
I got this problem when I installed Adob master collection Over CS 5.
I had children book story storis which created in Adobe illustrator CS 5 and I created art boards in Adobe photoshop cs 5.
After installting CS 6 i tried to edit the smart objects and it was not opeinging the smart object file in Illustrator.
    I did some tests.
    1) Right click on smart object layer and click export contents. Save on desktopp or anywhere you want. (I saved on desktop)
    2) I had this file on my desktop (Vector Smart Object10.ai) but it didn't show any icon, which program should open this type of file.
    3) Double click on the file and it pop up a extension window 'Click on change and select adobe illustrator' and press OK.
    4) Go back to your photoshop file and right click on smart object layer and click dit content. now this time it opens up assets in illustrator.
    ENJOY!
    Thanks

  • Edit Original not working for PSD links

Ok, so I just recently upgraded to CS3 from CS2 and am still getting used to some of the changes that were made. For some reason, I keep having this problem:
In the links panel, you can click on a link and click "Edit Original" to open the file in whichever program it was created in, of course. This is a feature I use ALL THE TIME. Well, for some reason, my CS3 grays out the Edit Original icon on the links panel whenever I select a .psd link. Jpeg, fine. Eps, no sweat. Ai file, not a problem. But once I select a .psd file, the icon grays out. And this is for ALL linked .psd files.
Anyone had this problem or know of a possible solution? I just hope it's not something dreadfully obvious...

First thing to check: will Windows open Photoshop if you click on a file in Explorer?
Check that you have .PSD correctly associated with Photoshop in Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types

  • Edit original/Edit with opens PS or AI from Time Machine backup

In the last days this strange problem accured in InDesign CS4. If I right click and select "Edit original" or "Edit with" for a EPS or PSD linked file, InDesign opens Photoshop or Illustrator from a Time Machine backup image instead of the default location (Applications folder in Mac OS X).
It's really annoying, because most of the time I already have Photoshop and Illustrator running, but if I select "Edit original" it runs another instance of PS or AI.
    What should I do?

OK, I have a partial solution. A kind fellow has written a virtual filesystem for Linux specifically to read Time Machine drives: https://github.com/abique/tmfs. Simply installing this utility allows me to browse the hard link structure of Time Machine without manually delving into the '.HFS+\ Private\ Directory\ Data^M' folders. I'm currently copying out all of the files onto a second external hard drive, and hopefully this will recovery my data. A bazillion thanks to abique!
Of course, this doesn't track down my hardware problem, but I think it's best to retire this external hard drive entirely. I think the problem is with the drive or the enclosure and not with my MBP, since I attempted to copy the data onto a different MBP and had the same errors.
    Steps:
    - Install TMFS, available in the Ubuntu Software Manager.
    - Find the initial mount point of the Time Machine drive. For me, it was /media/<username>/<long string of random letters and numbers>.
    - Re-mount the time machine drive using the virtual filesystem. I also had to make a folder corresponding to the new mount point by hand, for some reason:
    > sudo mkdir /mnt/tm-root
    > sudo tmfs /media/username/4be78be9-cc68-32b4-9683-72c2209d11be /mnt/tm-root -ouid=$(id -u),gid=$(id -g),allow_other
    - The Time Machine partition is now browsable (read-only) at /mnt/tm-root in a terminal, instead of not recognizing the hard links.
