Edit original, specify photoshop

How can I specify which program I'd like to use when clicking the "Edit Original" button?

Actually I overlooked this and use it myself sometimes.
From the link flyout select reveal in Bridge and then right or control click on the highlighted image icon and select open with and choose what application you wish since it is a linked file when you return ti Illustrator it will either update automatically or ask you if you wish to update it.
I know you want to choose it once but if you do that and you want to choose a different app for that particular linked file then you would need a way to choose again so this is the least intrusive way and gives you the most choices.

  • Lightroom - Edit Original In Photoshop - Serious Rendering Issue

It kinda bothers me that it seems no one else on the entire internet has had this problem...
This actually started happening when I was using LR2 and CS4 several months ago, and for some reason the problem came with me through to LR3 and CS5... but when I try to edit an image in Photoshop using the original, I get this weird whitenoise-like abberation with color banding. But if I edit with Lightroom adjustments, there's no problems... but I hate having to make that intermediate step... Lightroom already isn't very good about dealing with multiple full-res versions of a file as it is.
I am and have always been using the most up-to-date software, plugins, updates, etc. I'm on Windows 7.
    I have attached a screenshot.

    I really don't think so.
I'm tech savvy, recently upgraded my RAM, and the problem persists. Also, this is the ONLY error of its type I get. Like I said, everything works just fine if I'm editing with lightroom adjustments... I just have to make an extra step I don't want.

  • Edit original in photoshop : raw vs jpg

    Hi,
my problem : when I modify a raw file in LR, and then do some corrections in Photoshop, when I come back to LR, all the initial LR modifications are now made permanent to the image and no way back.
I did not have that problem with jpg files where I followed that process:  I modify them in LR, and then choose the "modify a copy" option when going from LR to Photoshop. Then  I do my corrections in photoshop on the copy, and when I go back in lightroom, I copy all the settings from the non-modified initial picture to the Photoshop-modified copy. So I end up with a picture including the Photoshop modificiation, but where I can still change the initial LR editing.
Any idea how to follow similar process for raw file (I use CR2 Canon format for Raw) ?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Julien

If you start in LR, crop a raw file, do an Edit In PS, you will have only the cropped image in PS, not the un-cropped original file, so I’m not sure I follow the rest of the question.
Does it help that you can create a virtual copy or a raw file in LR, reset all your LR edits (or just the crop) on the copy, then do an Edit In PS on that copy and so you’ll have the original with LR edits, the virtual copy possibly without some or all LR edits, and then any result you save back from PS.

  • Edit Original in Photoshop?

Have hundreds of .jpg's in Encore 2, in various folders and slide shows.
Suddenly need to colour balance a bunch in Photoshop so thought I could
select in project window (or better in slide show) and get to Photoshop.
Pics come in many cases straight from camera - is that the reason. Do I have
to open all in Photoshop and save again to access this feature, or go
through the routine of find in Bridge and then open in Photoshop and then
    resave etc??....

    Peter,
I can't answer your Encore question but as a layman who has worked with many digital pics I found that most of my pics needed something done to them before I was happy with them. So I started a routine (work flow) of downloading my pics to a folder, deleting many of them, and then manipulating them in PS. I have over 10,000 family photos(that includes
scans and digital camera pics) going back to the turn of the century which Ive manipulated in PS and put into slide shows or mixed with video
and authored in several different authoring programs (only use Encore now, it took Adobe a while...). It took me a while to fall into that routine but it has worked for me. Only ocassinaly will I "open in PS" from inside another Programe to manipulate the pic.
    Just my thoughts,
    Kent

  • InDesign CS3 bug for "Edit Original"

    Hi,
I have laid out an InDesign document with lots of photos (JPG), with each frame showing the photo at a certain 'crop level' (or % scale relative to the original photo). Let's say I have a frame in which the photo is scaled at 20%. If I try to edit this ('Edit Original') in Photoshop to enhance it, after making changes and saving & closing it, I return back to InDesign. I find this photo to be entirely different scale (the one chosen by InDesign is totally random, and certainly not the original one (so in the example above it will be not 20%, it could be 38%, 48% or whatever, but not the one I had before I started editing the photo).
This is very annoying as I have to remember how the photo was set up in the frame, and fix it after finishing the editing step.
Does any one know if this is a known bug and what is the work around to this problem?
The whole reason for me to use InDesign was to be able to layout my pages perfectly and then edit only those photos that were selected. This bug is making my life miserable :-(
    Thx for any help/Regards,
    Sandeep

    Hi,
I think the "mystery" is solved. The problem occurs ONLY on the portrait photos, and because of the peculiarity of various SW programs (even though they are all from Adobe). I can now recreate the scenario at will, even for a smaller test document with 1 image.
This is what I have discovered so far. InDesign does have the dimensions from the original photo (that's why it will keep the correct settings regardless of how many times you make changes to the ID document or move/resize the rectangle 'linking' to the picture). The problem comes from the fact that photoshop changes some of the EXIF tags "logically".
EXIF tags (I am showing only the relevant ones) for the original photo are the same as the one 'exported' from Photoshop Elements 6.0. They are as follows:
    Orientation : Rotate 90 CW
    XResolution : 72
    YResolution : 72
    ResolutionUnit : inches
    ExifImageWidth : 3888
    ExifImageHeight : 2592
Software : Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0
Note that my actual photo is in the 'portrait' mode, so width should be 2592 (smaller) and height should be 3888 (larger) - but the orientation of "Rotate 90 CW" is read and honored by InDesign, so I did not need to 'manually' rotate it when placing the file. Now I set the scale to 10% because my rectangle was small. When exporting the photo from my album, the Software tag was attached by PE6.0 as you can see above. In my original camera based file, this tag was missing, but otherwise everything is was same.
AFTER I edited the photo in Photoshop to change its shadows/highlights, levels, etc. when I saved the photo, EXIF tags became:
    Orientation : Horizontal (normal)
    XResolution : 72
    YResolution : 72
    ResolutionUnit : inches
    ExifImageWidth : 2592
    ExifImageHeight : 3888
Software : Adobe Photoshop CS3 Windows
So, you can see that Photoshop changed the orientation to "normal" and also adjusted the Width and Height to support that orientation (I did not notice that quickly enough:-().
What is strange is that, instead of maintaining my scale at 10%, after 'updating the modified link', InDesign changes the scale to 15% (if you do the math, the original horizontal dimension of 3888 is exactly 1.5 times the new dimension of 2592!) so it must keep the link information in some other way that it recomputes to be 15%. BTW, the X & Y values of the placed image were also multiplied by 1.5. That's how I was seeing the changed scales, as well as X, Y values after updates. The net orientation of the photo is not affected (at least for the photos from this camera), but it could as well.
I am much happier that at least I understand the problem! This of course supports all of you who were recommending to 'prep' the files before you start. I'd also add that don't just prep them with any batch tool, but do it with the tool that you are going to use to edit. BECAUSE...
This problem can occur any time I mix and match my editing software. I am going to check the behavior of LightRoom (since I have just got it, I am not as comfortable to work with it as Photoshop - and of course the styles of these 2 products are very different). I have never used the Camera Raw 4.5 (or 5 that comes with PS CS4), but will have to be careful about that too.
    Regards,

  • Video editing/exporting in Photoshop CS6 - original quality gone in YouTube. Idea?

Hello, i've searched this forum and other sources already, but couldn't find a solution. Unfortunately, i am not a video pro.
I record video tutorials about Photoshop (so, screen captures) and edit/combine the clips inside Photoshop CS6 in Win 7/64; Photoshop's new video talent is nice. I record 852x480px at 15 fps with FastStone Capture  and save in WMV.
I want to show the finished video tutorial on Youtube. There are several things baffling me when editing video in Photoshop CS6.
My original records  (according to MediaInfo):
    Software: FastStone Capture
Overall bit rate mode                    : Variable
Overall bit rate                         : 113 Kbps
Maximum Overall bit rate                 : 124 Kbps
    Format                                   : WMV1
    Codec ID                                 : WMV1
    Codec ID/Info                            : Windows Media Video 7
Description of the codec                 : Windows Media Video V7
    Bit rate mode                            : Variable
    Bit rate                                 : 56.8 Kbps
    Width                                    : 852 pixels
    Height                                   : 480 pixels
    Display aspect ratio                     : 16:9
    Frame rate                               : 15.000 fps
    Bit depth                                : 8 bits
    Bits/(Pixel*Frame)                       : 0.009
    Stream size                              : 212 KiB (50%)
    Audio
    Format                                   : WMA
    Format version                           : Version 2
    Codec ID                                 : 161
Codec ID/Info                            : Windows Media Audio
Description of the codec                 : Windows Media Audio 9.2 -  48 kbps, 44 kHz, mono 1-pass CBR
    Bit rate mode                            : Constant
    Bit rate                                 : 48.0 Kbps
    Channel(s)                               : 1 channel
    Sampling rate                            : 44.1 KHz
    Bit depth                                : 16 bits
    Stream size                              : 179 KiB (43%)
If i upload this *original* WMV clip *without any editing* to YouTube, it looks very nice on YouTube (if you manually set the YouTube player quality to 480p). YouTube upscales the low-res clip nicely even on big screens. (I use the low screen resolution of 852x480 so that tool icons and letters in menus don't appear to small. I would love to stay with that resolution.)
But i want to combine several screen capture takes in Photoshop CS6. Inside Photoshop CS6 Extended, i get the Adobe Media Encoder (AME) and have only two format options: H.264 (MP4) and DPX (DPX only offerening resolutions between 1080 and 2048 px wide). There is no AVI or WMV or anything else offered.
So from Photoshop CS6 i export to MP4 with these specs:
    MP4
Preset: High Quality (nothing "better" is offered)
    Size: as original (852x480)
    Framerate: as original (15 fps)
    Interlacing: progressive (recommended by YouTube)
The result looks very nice when i play it locally in VLC. It looks like the original WMV.
But: When i upload the Photoshop-version to YouTube, the video looks very badly "upsampled" and blurred. It looks much worse than the uploaded WMV original.
If you like, you can compare the two videos from the same source online:
Uploaded WMV clip, looking good (set player to 480 p):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjmKohV_jmU
Rendered in Photoshop CS6, looking bad (set player to 480 p):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA0Veq9IZac
I do like the resolution of 852x480 and would like to keep it. If not possible, i have to record tutorials in 1280x720, even though icons and menus look too small. So far i have not tested it.
I searched my folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\dynamiclinkmediaserver\1.0. There is a lot in it which i don't understand, but some file names include "MPEG", "AVI", "Adobe QT Server" etc. I think there is no Quicktime installed on my machine; i try to avoid it as it does many different things to the system and is obnoxious.
    My questions:
    - When aiming for a YouTube cast, could i stay with 852x480 (at 15 fps), or doesn't it make sense? (I like that size.) If 852x480 is not ok, what is the lowest resolution for getting good looking presentations on Youtube?
    - Why does the Adobe Media Encoder in my Photoshop CS6 only offer the formats H.264 and DPX? Can i get more? (Free, pay.) Would it help?
    - Do i need to install Quicktime? How could i do this with less intrusive QT behaviour?
    - Should i record more fps in FastStone Capture? (I don't find more fps necessary when looking at the original and when looking at the uploaded *original*.)
    - What to do?
    Thanks for all suggestions!

My Canon EOS Camera can also capture 1080p Video it writes it to the memory Card as Name.MOV.  I don't do video the file are huge. But you
made me want to see what CS6 video support could do to reduce the file size.
So I took one of my captured .mov files and droped it onto Photoshop the .mov file was 264,678,777 byte in size.  I saw the Photoshop could render H264 .mp4 video anf that there were some presets for YouTube at 29.97 the rate my camera does for 1080p, 720p and SD 360p I also tried createin a 854x480 16:9 video 480P
These are the size file produced 480 make no sence it so close to 720 file size.

  • How can I get 'Edit Original' to open file in Photoshop?

I have a Mac running OSX 10.6.2. I have the full CS4 Suite.
When I try clicking 'Edit Original' in Illustrator it opens the file in Apple's pdf viewer: 'Preview'. How can I change it to open in Photoshop by default?
File is CMYK tiff - jsut in case that matters
I've checked the PDF manual - no joy
    Can anyone help?
    Cheers
    Nick

    Thanks SeniorSSS
    It works!
Is it me or is that a really off-the-wall solution for Apple to take?:
If you want to change the way a programme functions, choose a completely unrelated file and use it to instruct all other files of the same type. I would never have thought of that solution in a million years. Perhaps I don't think outside the box ...
Anyway, much appreciated all the same

  • "Edit original" for JPEG opens Preview, not Photoshop?

When I right-click on a JPEG in InDesign CS 5 and then select "edit original", it opens the photo in Preview. Is there a way to set the default application associated with JPEGs to Photoshop?
    Thanks

Oh, I see. I was hoping there might be a separate function for ID because I generally like to open JPEGs quickly in Preview. I guess I'll just stick with the contextual menu and scroll to Photoshop. Not a big deal.
    Thanks!

    • Closing the file at the end of each change isn't an option as some Photoshop files exceed 1.5GB
    Any suggestions...?

I'd expect a poweruser to go to their Keyboard preferencepane to enable standard F keys.
When you buy an Apple computer without loading it with software when would you use those keys? I can't think of one application that uses it, other than the obvious things like CTRL+F2 and the like that hardly anyone uses and I'd consider only there for strict keyboard jocks. After years of new computers having to disable the hide dock shortcut for feather it shouldn't be a crazy thing to expect someone to find their keyboard preferences if they demand that functionality. Heck, even Adobe just dropped that shortcut in CS4.
Either that or ask for apple to make 140 key keyboards.

  • Photoshop opens a separate (but identical) window every time i select edit original in Illustrator

There was is currently a "Discussion" in the PS Forum on this only it refers to InDesign.
I can confirm this behaviour using Illusttrator. Is a way to disable Photoshop from opening two files with the same name?
I realize this could be a useful feature to some, however in certain workflows this is annoying.
    Test this:
    Open Photoshop.
    Create a quick file.
    Save on desktop.
Do not close the PS file.
Open Illustrator and place your PS file.
Now "option double click" the placed image in Illustrator to edit original.
BANG. You now have two identical PS files open.

That does not happen to me in CS5 or CS6 Illustrator on Mac, and has never happened in the past. What happens is the already open Photoshop file is brought to focus.
Do you possibly have CC? I know they added a feature for unembed images, and wondering if possibly you have an embedded image rather than linked. In CS5 or CS6 mac you cannot edit original on an embedded image, but if you could you would theoretically have 2 images looking the same open in photoshop.
You could try resetting your Phothsop preferences, if my stab at this being related to CC has no relevance.

    > but i would much prefer the link to automatically update once changes have been made - as it should.
I concur, and am a little frustrated with suggestions that you should "simply" flip between apps. That isn't a solution, it's what you're forced to do because things aren't working properly.
I see you have been asking in the InDesign forum. I am surprised no one there suggested trashing your preferences. I would start there, I would also consider trashing Photoshop's preferences (I think it's much the same deal as ID, but you'd better check.)
I wonder what happens when you use Edit With > Photoshop. Does that behave the same?
And I can't help but wonder if it isn't something in your system. Does double-clicking a PSD in Finder work properly -- and twice in a row? Do you notice anything unusual at all? What about applets that commandeer shortcuts? Grasping at straws, but sometimes the way to fix a problem is to look where it can't be.

For some unknown reason, when using the Edit Original function in InDesign, it will open Photoshop but then fails to open the image. Same results when using Edit with. Will work with Preview and Acrobat. Any solutions?
    CS4 on Mac OSX 10.6

    Hi Steve
Finally solved the issue. It was down to InDesign. I had to completely uninstall InDesign and its preferences, then reinstall from disc. The installation had errors so after a restart and reinstallation, downloading updates etc. it now works!! Not sure what is was actually down to though.

  • CS4 images "edit original" now open as jpg instead of in Photoshop

CS4. InDesign 5.0.4. Just upgraded OS to Snow Leopard (10.6) Friday.
Now my images in InDesign  no longer open into Photoshop but open as jpgs which means I now have do extra steps of going to Photoshop, finding the image and then opening it.
How do I get back to images opening directly in Photoshop when I click on them in InDesign and then go to edit original? Thank you

Bob, we are talking about thousands of images!!
Isn't there a step in InDesign to get back to normal like on Friday? There has to be something inside InDesign that must have changed....
And you are right.... CS3. My other computer has CS4 on it.
    Thank you.

I have re-phrased my response to make it NOT sound like having the suite is a requirement for the 'Edit in Adobe Photshop' option to appear.
If you have Photoshop stand-alone installed you will still get that option, in most cases. It just needs to be able to see that Photoshop has been installed. However, I've run tests where I had the suite installeld, installed a later version in addition to the newer suite version, and then upon choosing 'Edit in Adobe Photoshop', the file opend in that later standalone version of PrPro because the OS had changed the affilliation to that version upon install.
I know that there are also cases where the affilitation has been inadvertently set away from Photoshop altogether. Knowing that the user has installed the suite (or both standalone prodcuts of the same version) virtually eliminates that possibility. But in this case, the user was just not seeing the menu item.
@ welchphoto... Perfectly understable mistake. I've done that too. I'm just glad it we could solve it quickly for you.
