Edit Photo with Adobe CS3

I have RAW pictures ( NEF ) which are displayed in the Library of LightRoom . When I want to use the "Edit with Adobe CS3" fonction, I can only select "Edit a Copy With LightRoom Adjustment" . I can never select "Edit a Copy" or "Edit Original". Why ?? Am I doing something wrong.
PS: I use Lightroom 1.1 in English.

On this subject, one of my compaints about LR is that there is (as far as I can tell) no way to 1) open a batch of photos in PS to edit and 2) if you open a file in PS to edit LR creates a new file even if you don't want one (yet). I often just want to do a quick edit and convert for Web display. There is a way to create a special action/droplet in PS to have and use in the Export dialogue box, but this seem rather unelegant and is not useful for opening to edit, when in CS3 you just select files in Bridge and Open in Camera Raw/CS3.

OSX 10.5.4: Still the same problems with Adobe CS3 files

I updated to OS X 10.5.4 on a latest generation 24" iMac with Adobe CS3 on it. This is the only Mac with 10.5 installed in a publishing company with 10 Macs, all with Adobe CS3 and all working always with files on the same file server. The other 9 Macs have OS X 10.4 installed.
The iMac with 10.5 had massive problems with CS3 files since OS X 10.5.2 - frequently existing Photoshop files disappeared from the server after the "Save" command, frequently "Save As" was not possible in Photoshop, sometimes Indesign crashed when files were getting saved on the server - none of this is happening on the other Macs with OS X 10.4.
On the first couple of days with 10.5.4 at least in Photoshop exactly the same problems: Existing files disappear from the server after the "Save" command, "Save As" is often times not possible.
It's a shame!

Why don't you try updating with the larger installer, the combo updater. The combo updater is generally more helpful when troubleshooting a problem.

I have just updated my iPhoto to Photos in OS X and i have noticed that the option to edit photo with external editor such as Photoshop has been removed. will this be back!
Its now a pain to send a photo directly to my favourite photo editing software.

Totally understand being a new app and not an update.
So i'm a ammeter photographer and i like the way i can view my photos in iPhoto and i'm happy with the new App for this also, however i like to edit my photos in PS from time to time and i shoot in raw. As i can no longer select edit in external editor from the photo app i tired to drag a RAW photo to PS but this didn't work. i then tried dragging to desktop but this then made a jpeg so i loose my raw advantage. I would like to be able to find my original raw photos easily so i can edit them in PS.

Yes, it is.
The easiest way for me is access the custom shape tool, and within that the Symbols library. You will find the copy right sign. Just drag it out. It will be on its own layer. Enter the rest of the info with the Type tool.
The symbol can also be found in the character map on a Windows system.
If you have multiple photos that you wish to mark, it is very efficient to make a copyright brush and apply with a click of the mouse.

It should do but nobody can guarantee it 100%.
The best thing is to download the trial version and install that. When you install it, it should take a copy of your current catalog and then convert that copy to the new format. Your Photoshop Elements 9 should not be affected.
It is always a good idea to ensure that you have a backup of your catalog & photos when you start a major update like this. Take a backup using the Elements Backup to Hard drive option (under File menu) - best backed up to an external drive.
It is ok to have both version installed on your system but I suggest that you just use the version 12 to check out the catalog conversion to start with. If you are happy with that, you can always run the conversion at a later stage if you have updated the version 9 catalog. You can not convert the version 12 catalog back to a version 9 catalog.

Edit Photo with CS3

I have been using LR with PS/CS3 for a while but for some reason the behavior seems to have changed when pushing a file to PS. To maintain layers when working in PS I have to push the file to PS by choosing "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments", make the PS changes, and then Save. No problem there. The next time I push the file to PS from LR I have to choose the option "Edit a Copy" to access the file with the layers retained in PS. My question is then .... why can't I just always edit a file in PS by selecting "Edit a Copy" from LR in all cases. It's a pain with the volume I work on to first select "Edit a Copy with LR adjustments" then remember for that file to choose "Edit a Copy". Am I missing something?

Do you really need to create a new, additional, copy each and every time?
First time you need to select "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments" because that's all you can do when working on a RAW file. Next time you need to carry out further edits, simply select the TIFF and "Edit Original". That way you've always got just your Master RAW file and your Master (edited) copy.

I can't access edited photos with iphoto

I am new to iphoto 08.
I have preferences set up to edit iphoto images with photoshop CS3. After editing a photo, I use the option save in same folder but iPhoto does not show the edited photo, just the unedited photos. I can see the location of the new photo using spotlight (the path indicates that the photo is in the same folder as the unedited photos in iPhoto) but am unable to see the photo in iPhoto.

Maybe this will help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

10.6.8 with adobe CS3

In a situation where I need to maintain Adobe CS3 MS on a MacPro to convert older Quark files to InDesign via Markzware. Converting in CS5 makes it unavailable to designers in Europe in SoAmerican who still maintain CS3 and CS4. It's a tricky situation to provide publication files around the world. Would like to not have to have one machine dedicated just for this function. Yet, would like to convert this machine to Snow Leopard to allow other software to run better. Bit of a conundrum supplying files to different levels of designers and keeping current on this machine.
Looked a bit around the internet and not a lot of information on 10.6.8 compatibility with CS3. Did note that CS2 (a PPC only version) has fallen off as would be expected. Has CD3 finally done the same and I simply need to keep one machine for this function? That doesn't pencil out as well.
If you have any info, or can point me in a direction for some, please let me know.

Thanks. It is a MacPro 8C workstation in a design studio. Running 10.5.8 Leopard but want to upgrade machine to function better with CS5 and other software needing 10.6 + but still wanting to maintain CS3 ID / Markzware4 for conversions from old Quark and supplying files to layout people with older versions of Adobe software in Europe. The compromise allows CS4, CS5 users to draw in the CS3 files. We switched everything from Quark to InDesign worldwide so the old Quark files is all we have to convert. It's not that much so maintaining a machine just for this is hard to justify.

several years ago I have had the product Adobe CS3 Design Premium installed on my PC. This is a purchased license student version. The problem with software features occurred a few days ago because I reinstalled my PC. Of course, I first deactivated Adobe. Now, after reactivation, however, do not work as should. I do not understand why?
The problem is in every program, for example in Adobe Photoshop tool icons are not displayed correctly - one tool appears three times next to each. Next in Adobe Indesign I can´t click every window and change the character - every window doesn´t react to every click. And next problem is Adobe Indesign do not display sharply, everything I see in this program is blurred and difficult to read.

"How" very much depends on what exactly you want to achieve. Basically you open it in Acrobat, then use the tools to edit it. You may need to perform text recognition (OCR) if the document is a scanned image.
If you need details how to do certain edits, you better ask in the Acrobat forum (Creating, Editing & Exporting PDFs).

Huge size of edited photos with plugin

Hello,
I'm using Imagetrends Fisheye-hemi plug-in because I have 8mm camera lens. One photo usually have about 25MB and after editing with plugin about 50MB. I tried to change Aperture Export settings to 72dpi from 300dpi and .tiff to .psd but nothing happend. Is there some way to export photos into .jpeg or same size as original?
I mean that one reason will be export photos into .jpeg, import them into library back and then edit them. But it's annoying.

Aperture creates a version in either .tif or .psd for use with plugins and external editors. Have you checked the size of the version created for this, before editing?
With the doubling of size, I am wondering if you have selected to use 16 bit vs 8 bit you have started out with in your Masters?

Keyframing can be applied to most Effects, whether Fixed, or applied, so it can do much more, than Pan & Zoom. The application of it is almost limitless.
