Edit Smart Object in Lightroom instead of ACR

Hi,
I recently aquired both photoshop CS5 and lightroom 3. I'm still trying to get down the best workflow between the two programs. What I'd like to do is to use lightroom as my only raw converter and use photoshop to make the final pixel edits. I've been playing around with smart objects and have noticed that once you open a raw file from lightroom as a smart object in photoshop, it appears your stuck in photoshop. If you want to open the smart object and make alterations it opens in adobe camera raw in photoshop. Is there a way to re-open the smart object back in lightroom instead of in ACR?
Thanks!

If I interpret you correctly,  I think what you want is to use PS as a photo editor and retain the image - with the PS-edits - as a RAW-file.
And that is not possible.
You say "that there must be a way to synchronize those instructions".
No, there is no way, even though LR and PS use ACR - and it is the same ACR for both (BTW: ACR means Adobe Camera Raw).
You cannot synchronize the instructions (= edits) because LR writes / saves them in the LR-Catalog, whereas PS (as a pixel-based editor) cannot write into the LR-Catalog (nor can it read the LR catalog).
PS also cannot write XMP-files (alyhough Adobe Bridge can). PS is a pixel-based editor and that means that Adobe can write / save its edits only as a PDF (TIFF, etc)-file.
When you open a RAW-image in PS with previous edits in LR), the image is displayed in PS with the LR-edits. When you then make further edits in PS you have to save those edits as a PSD (TIFF, etc.). If you don't and close the file the PS-edits will be gone and lost.
You say "When you open a Smart Object up in ACR from Photoshop, where does Photoshop keep the instructions/edits?".
I don't know, presumably in RAM or on the PS scratch-disk. But these instructions/edits are not accessible and if you close the file without saving the image they will be lost. And if you save the image you will have a PSD (or TIFF, etc.)
You write: "This way you could "re-edit" the original raw file in Lightroom and then apply those changes to wherever Photoshop keeps the instructions of how to interpret the Smart Object." Yeah, it would be nice but it isn't possible. Maybe Adobe picks your idea and in the future who knows ...
But right now: Nope.

  • Smart Object - How do I keep ACR from changing workflow options?

Open image in Photoshop as a Smart Object from Lightroom.
Double-click to change the RAW characteristics.
When I return to Photoshop, my image has been changed...  Color space is changed, bit depth is changed, size is changed........
I believe I know WHAT is doing it - the Workflow Options in ACR are set.  HOW DO I TURN THEM OFF?
I can't find a reset, and I can't get it to stop messing with the image.  I've SPECIFICALLY UNCLICKED the "Resize to Fit", but
it STILL takes my 2600x3300 pixel image and returns it as 1824x2321 pixels.......
Where and how do I reset this thing?

I ABSOLUTELY agree......  That's exactly, I believe, how it's SUPPOSED to work.
    Except that mine didn't.
    I opened a 12.2 MP RAW file.
And made absolutely no changes to the workflow uptions at the time of opening.
But instead of "Image Sizing" saying "Default 12.2 MP", it said "3.6MP"
    Resize was turned OFF
Width was 2321 px and height was 1824 px, BOTH GRAYED OUT.
Upon leaving ACR, I had a 2321x1824 file.
Eventually, after wasting another hour screwing around with it, I finally blew away all of Bridge AND the preferences and all that,
and rebooted since the %$#)(*& Adobe CC thing wouldn't figure out there was no more Bridge, and resintalled...........
Now, when I open a file in there, at LEAST it knows it's 12.2MP.
It STILL wants to change the Space to sRGB, which I NEVER use from here, and the Depth to 8-bit, which again, I never use in ACR,
but I can set those back to what they should be...
So, in this case, by using a large enough bludgeon, I appear to have gotten around the problem.  Now I'm just waiting to see how soon it screws up again.

I received the file from my client. However, last week I had no trouble pasting the same file into a PSD file, as a smart object.
The color file is a label mechanical, which I place into a PSD file of the product. These are used for print ads and web graphics. The color is very critical and has worked really well for the last 4 years.
I have used the default color settings in Creative Suite and its been working fine. They are in synch and, I have no idea how to re-assign the color profile. I’m a graphic Designer, color correction is not something I would do normally.

  • Smart Object .psd file opens in ACR, why?

In LR3.0, I select a .psd file in my catalog and do "edit in photoshop as a smart object".  Inside of photoshop, I double click on the layer or click "edit contents" of the smart object layer, it takes me to the ACR dialog.  Well, I do not want this dialog.  I just want to edit it as I would any other document inside of photoshop.  Smart objects created inside of photoshop to NOT behave this way.  Only lightroom psd files that are opened in photoshop as a smart object exhibit this "strange" behavior.  How can I edit the contents of these smart objects inside of photoshop and omit ACR?

Your application versions aren't in sync, so this just won't work I'm afraid: CS4 is (roughly) four years behind LR4 and the version of ACR that comes with PS CS4 (5.x - should be on 5.7) won't be able to interpret the edits you've carried out in LR4, assuming you're using the latest process version with the new slider controls.
Very surprised you're not getting any error messages or warnings though. Maybe you switched them off in Lightroom?

  • Problem editing smart objects in CC

Not sure what I'm doing differently. But I use to copy over a layer into a file. as a smart object, transform it. Then if I needed to replace the image. I would double click and the contents would open as a .psb file. I could then replace the image and save it and it was updated in the main comp file.
Now, if I double click I just get Camera Raw?
If I choice edit SO same thing.
Replace content lets me choose another file, but I don't have the open .psb which I could work on before saving it back.
What am I doing wrong now to not get the .psb to open and edit?
    Thanks
    Maxi

Sound like what was mentioned above: you dragged a RAW file or one that was at somepoint edited in ACR into your document.  If you open a jpg or other file type in ACR, it will continue to open in ACR, so this might be your problem if it's not a RAW file.  You can check to see if it was edited in ACR in Bridge.  There will be some icons below the thumbnail showing that it's been cropped and adjusted in ACR.  If the files you're trying to drag in aren't RAW or have been edited in ACR, this sounds like a bug.

  • Psd files not updating edited smart objects (PS CC as of 6/3/14)

I created a master PSD file and added four different TIF files as 'linked' (not embedded) Smart Objects.  If I edit these linked files (they open when double-clicked, or 'Edit Contents') make changes and then save & close the edited master TIF files, the main PSD file does not reflect the edited changes. If I double click the Smart Object, it opens and shows my edits, but to save & close still does not update the master PSD file.   I do this all the time without issue, so I am perplexed.  Even if I right-click the smart object and select "Update All Modified Content" nothing changes.  Closing the file, restarting Photoshop- nothing updates the main PSD file with the changes to the edited TIF files... EXCEPT if I 'replace contents' with the same file: then it updates the PSD.
    Any ideas?

I was actually just working in Illlustrator. Selecting the vector object and then select PS and Paste. I'm then asked if I want this to be a smart object. I select yes and it adds the object as a smart object layer. If I double click the layer it opens it in Illustrator, I make a change, save it and close it. Then back to PS and the smart object doesn't update.
I haven't used Place Embedded or Place Linked. I don't understand what those functions do. It's just not how I'm use to working.
Actually I have a large PSD doc. Inside it is a group of objects that I have turned into a Smart object. Inside that (by double clicking) is an AI file that is also a smart object. When I open that up to make a change it won't update once I save and close.
I have tried a coulpe of test with placed Linked and Embedded objects and I can't get those to work either. So what ever the change was. So far not really liking it.

  • Cropping smart object files in PS with ACR

I sent a DNG from LR to PS with the "open as smart object in Photoshop" command and after I cropped it in ACR ... the result is in the following image:
It is not cropping canvas ...
So does this mean that we can not use ACR in PS for cropping smart object files?
    Any idea?
    Thanks ...

I see a display like you show.
For when the it was first opened as a smart object layer it was not cropped. ACR set the new Document canvas size to the image's pixel size  for there was no open document and the transform associated the smart object anchor point is the canvas center and the width an height sizes are both 100%.
If I then double click on the smart icon in the layers palette. ACR open the full RAW image.  If I then use ACR crop tool and say crop a portion or the upper left section of the image. When I click OK.  Photoshop updates the smart object layer object. The rendered pixels are the upper left section. The associated transform is not changed it still has the canvas centered anchor point and a width and height of 100%.  So the layers pixel are moved to the center and the width and height are  still 100%.  The number of pixels in the object is much smaller then canvas size so there are transparent areas on all four sides and the borders on opersid sizes are equal to each other.
If I double click on the smart Icon in the layer palette ACR open and all I see is the cropped area. When I click on ACR crop tool I see the whole image and the crop selection is the upper left section I selected the previous time I reprocessed the smart object layer

  • Edit smart object problem - CS4

I have some Illustrator art placed in Photoshop as a smart object. The object contains one main element and then a smaller element off to the side. Now that the object is placed as a smart object I want to edit the content in Illustrator and remove the smaller element that is off to the side. The problem happens that once the element is removed the remaining art placement in the Photoshop document shifts position relative to the new center of the art. Is there any way to change/prevent this?

Giving the objects no fill/stroke has been my work around in the past however this particular element is extremely complex and I was hoping that I could find a quicker and better way. I like the idea of the no fill/stroke bounding box. I will give that a try but I see a potential problem with effects like drop shadows and such. I think that if those effects are expanded and the bounding box set to the area of the expanded raster it might work. I wish that it was "smart" enuf to realize how it was placed/edited and not have to add elements that are for nothing more than to keep it ancored. Is this how it is in CS5?

  • Edit smart object open in preview and not ai...

    Hello,
Al working on a layout with CS4 master collection.  In PS I pasted an ai as a smart object.... But now when I edit the smart object it opens in preview and not AI.
    Any thoughts?
    thanks

The matter has come up recently already, a forum search turns up:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2416222#2416222
So unless updating the OS helps the problem may be persistent.
A work-around may be to Export Contents, edit in Illustrator, save that and then Replace Contents back in Photoshop.

  • How do you edit smart objects  in Elements 12?

In CS, I just double click on the SO and it opens in a new tab. Can I not edit SOs in Elements 12?
    Please advise.
    ~marlo

There's a smart object in a layered image I was sent which I need to edit.
In CS, you're able to open it, edit and save and the changes appear in the original file.
From what I've read, this is impossible to do in Elements (which is on my home PC - I have CS at work).
Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'll either have to upgrade what I have at home or deal with it when  I  get back to work.

  • Trouble editing smart objects

If I paste a vector element from illustrator into PS as a smart object, and then wish to edit that content later, the smart object is opened in Preview rather than illustrator. Is there some way to specify the editor or just force it to open in Illustrator?
    ugh.

    Hi,
Recently upgraded to Mac OS X 10.6.8 and Photoshop CS5.1. What is this new obsession with Preview? I've gotten over the fact that double clicking an Illustrator EPS in Quark > Edit Original, no longer opens it in Illustrator but Preview - nigh on useless for editing. But now my vector smart objects in Photoshop are also opening in Preview as well.
Is there some setting or box I need to tick somewhere to stop Preview hogging my vector artwork. I realise I can change settings so that ALL EPSs open in Illustrator but that's not workable for me as we use a lot of rasterized Photoshop EPSs too and this 'all or nothing' solution doesn't discriminate between the two. This is probably more of a Mac OS problem than an Adobe one, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. Upgrading seems to have made my work flow dissappointingly LESS efficient.
Is there a new way to get a vector smart object to open or even export or something to Illustrator? I've a logo currently trapped in a PSD and it needs to get to Illustrator.
    Thanks,
    Vaun

  • After latest Photoshop CC update, I can no longer edit a raw file in Lightroom 4 as a smart object

  • Will editing a smart object affect my photo in Lightroom too?

So I am used to Lightroom after 6 months and I started to use Photoshop CC.
    1) After editing in Lightroom I edit my photo as Smart Object in Photoshop CC.
    2) When I'm finished and save this as a .PSD, will this affect the photo in Lightroom too?
Will my photo in Lightroom be affected by using Camera RAW?
Will my photo in Lightroom be affected by using adjustment layers and filters?
For now I know that Smart Object are non-destructive, but I just don't know if they change the edit I made in Lightroom.

If you open the image as a Smart Object from Lightroom, the image will be sent to Photoshop as a Tiff file. If you double click that layer it will open in Camera Raw, but all the settings will be their defaults because as far as Camera Raw is concerned, this is a brand new image. None of the changes made will affect the RAW changes you made in Lightroom since you are now effectively working on a copy of the original image.
It's a bit more complicated if you open the image from Bridge. Bridge sends the original RAW file to Photoshop when you ask Camera Raw. If you double click the smart object, all the Camera Raw settings will be set just as they were when you opened it from bridge. At this point, any changes you make WILL be reflected in the original RAW file right up until you save the file in Photoshop. Once Photoshop has saved the image, changes made to the Smart Object will no longer show up in the RAW file if you re-open it in Bridge or Lightroom.
Once you have saved a file in Photoshop opened from Bridge, it works the same as Lightroom with one important exception. Opening from Bridge retains all the settings you made, so you can undo them (without affecting the original image). If you open the image from Lightroom, you can no longer undo the settings made in Lightroom from within Photoshop without starting all over. So for example, if you set the image to +10 exposure, open it from Lightroom and then open the Smart Object, ACR will show the exposure as 0. You could make it -10 to compensate, but you will lose information in the photo. From Bridge, if you open the Smart Object, ACR will show the exposure as +10 so you can undo it with no loss of information.

  • Extracting an .xmp sidecar from an ACR-edited RAW smart object layer...

Hello all.  Given the following situation:
Several thousand TIFF files, each containing two RAW files embedded into separate Smart Object layers.  The RAW files were named with sequential numbers prior to being composited into the TIFF files via a script, and the TIFF filenames correspond to those of the embedded RAW files.  The RAWs have subsequently been edited in ACR from within the TIFF files.
I've done a little digging, but I can't seem to turn up answers to several related questions:
    A) Should I wish to re-extract the RAW files from the smart object layers with the edits that have been applied, is there a method of PerLayerMetdata that can be used to extract a complete .xmp sidecar that will be recognized by ACR and associated with the exported RAW?
    B) Should I wish to change the sequential-naming of the parent TIFF files, is there any method to correspondingly change the filenames of the embedded RAWs directly within the smart object layer?  In other words, using PerLayerMetdata, can the filenames of the RAWs be changed without exporting the RAWs using a different filename and then replacing the contents of the smart object layer?
    C) I would ultimately like to be able to save the embedded RAWs as DNGs with their ACR edits applied, if necessaray.  Given a way to accomplish A), above, it would be a fairly simple to export the RAWs and associated .xmp files and then run the DNG converter on the lot.  However, does anyone know of a way to save a DNG directly from the smart object layer?
Any ideas or pointers to existing documentation are much appreciated.

Thank you kindly, Michael.  I see now that the example I was viewing had done exactly what you describe, writing ACR settings into the SO layer's metadata at the time of embedding.  I was only looking at the portion which later accessed those settings using PerLayerMetadata, and I had mistakenly assumed that CS5 was automatically embedding xmp data in this manner, now, when opening or placing a RAW file as a SO.
I don't see a direct way to get at the ACR settings of a camera raw file embedded in a smart object.
This is sort of what I was afraid of.  They're in there, somewhere, but I'm having no luck figuring out how to access them.
If the ACR settings for a RAW smart object are, indeed, not exposed to automation in some manner, I think I must change my workflow such that either: A) No edits are performed in ACR after object embedding; or B) the RAWs are converted to DNGs prior to smart-object embedding so that the ACR settings can be exposed in the exported file.
