Edit to Tape window wont expand

Hi, I have been working on Final Cut 6 and when I go to play to tape the EDIT TO TAPE window wont expand out at all. Even with dragging at bottom and side it wont expand open.
I can see the three tabs at the top but nothing else, can anyone help with this please?
Everything else is working well

David,
I have a similar issue with the Edit to Tape window - when working in HD the ETT window often appears as only one pixel wide. The window can't be grabbed, dragged or resized. My work around is to switch the setup to PAL, open the ETT window, and then switch back to HD.

  • Edit to tape audio promlem - sounds like "chorus" effect

I have tried to Edit to Tape an HDV Sequence, down converted to SD, to a Digibeta deck.
When I monitor (headphone out of digibeta deck) while recording it sounds normal. When I rewind and check tape it sounds like the audio is "doubled up", almost like a very short chorus effect is on the audio. as well as this I can hear what sounds like tape crackle now and again.
However - when I do a straight crash record from the timeline - the audio plays back fine, no crackle.
So thinking it was an edit to tape settings problem i clicked on the audio button in the edit to tape window and notice audio was set to ALL ON. I changed this to A1 and A2 on, thinking that my extra audio tracks (which I had disabled, these where the original audio, not the OMF exported stereo mix) were somehow going down the SDI anyway...
No luck - did the edit to tape again and still sounded the same.
My heart rate has returned to normal now as the network kindly will accept the crash record with non standard timecode - but I of course still want to find out the problem so this doesn't happen again next week....
The Sequence was HDV 1080i, via a Decklink HD Extreme Capture Card, set to down convert to anamorphic 16:9. Sony Digibeta DVW-A500P deck.
Anyone know what the problem could be?
    thanks
    Hugh

for the benefit of anyone who searches for forum for a similar problem - it appears to have been a sync issue. changing "out ref" to "input video" appears to have fixed it.

  • Edit to tape in Final Cut Studio 2 question

This entire week we've been dividing time and shoots using one camera, a Panasonic DVX100A. As a result I think the settings on our camera and computer have changed a bit between shoots. That being said I'm having a problem doing an 'Edit to Tape' from the file menu in Final Cut Pro 6.0.3. When the Edit to Tape window comes up, we set the in point there after pulling over the Sequence we want to edit to tape on the camera monitor for the recorder it says it's recording. However, all I see it a blue screen with the 'REC' notice at the top. Since we've done this using this camera a few times I'm not sure what settings may have changed. To sum up, I need to know what has to change in order for me to effectively edit a sequence to tape in FCP 6. Thanks (most definitely) in advance for your help!

Alex, thanks for your help. I didn't notice one of the FCP settings for my camera had been changed. Funny how working at 2:45 a.m. can sneak up on your brain.
    Thanks again & take care!

  • Edit to tape INSERT & NO AUDIO

Ok, so i have a brand new Mac, Decklink Blackmagic Extreme HD card in it. Everything works properly, except the insert edit to tape. When I perform an assemble edit through the "Edit to tape" window it works fine, but cannot get the insert edit to insert audio?? Using a Sony UVW-1800 deck. Performed a test on the deck with another editor and it worked fine. Using the Blackmagic 10Bit Easy setup thus far. A bit confused about what the device control settings should be, or where I should be looking to get FCPS2 to tell the deck to record audio when doing an insert edit. And before you ask, yes I have selected "all on" from the "edit to tape" window audio pop-up.
I need help soon, as this is how we put all our productions to master tapes for the company!! Thanks in advance!!

Alright, if you have a Decklink card, and a BetaSP deck... this will be VERY helpful!!!

  • Edit to tape... Cannot Assemble...

Hi, I am trying to edit a 30sec commercial spot to tape to get it to the local cable company ASAP. I have a Powermac G5 outputting to a Multibridge extreme, controling a Panasonic AJ-D455 DVCPro deck. I have the timeline all set to export but when I drag it over to the Edit to Tape window, all options (insert, assemble, preview) are grayed out. Please help me.
    Thanks
    Paul

First of all, why not go out Firewire? That will keep the output a digital copy of your timeline.
If you insist on using the Decklink, make sure your settings are correct (device settings) - you should be able to control the deck prior to output. Do you get an error message when you click the black tape button?

  • Drop-Frame v. Non-Drop Frame and Edit to Tape

    System Configuration: G5 Dual 2.0, QT v7.0.4, FCP v5.0.4, OS X v10.4.6, KonaLH, Keyspan USA-28x USB-->Serial Adapter
Problem: When working with a drop-frame sequence, and editing to tape, the program is edited to the tape with an offset of 3 seconds and 18 frames.
    Reproducible: Yes.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Create a drop-frame sequence.
    2. Edit the sequence in step 1.
    3. Perform an edit to tape with the sequence edited in step 2.
What should happen: The sequence should be edited to tape at the time it occurs in the timeline.
What does happen: The sequence is edited to the tape 3 seconds and 18 frames after it should be!
Other observations: 3 seconds and 18 frames is exactly how much time is not in an hour of drop-frame time when compared to non-drop frame time. If you drop two (2) frames in every minute that does not end in zero, the math works out to 2*54=108 dropped frames in an hour. For the sake of simple mathematics, lets say there are 30 frames in a second. So 108/30= 3 with a remainder of 18, or 3 seconds and 18 frames.
It's as if FCP is getting confused about drop and non-drop timecode when the sequence is drop-frame. If anyone can offer any insights, confirmation, or resolutions for what I am seeing, it would be appreciated.
    Thanks for reading!

This may be related to a "bug" or issue that has been around since FCP1. When FCP is using deck control over firewire, The timecode display will default to DF, even if the tape is NDF. Look closely at the timecode dispays in the edit to tape window. If you see a semicolon before the frames place, FCP is seeing the tape TC as DF. Play the tape until you see the TC display change to NDF, then re-set your in point. This has worked for me in the past.
    Hope this helps.

  • Insert Edit to Tape Error

Having a problem with the insert function of edit to tape. I lay a program off to beta tape using the Edit to tape mode. Of course, I'll find a mistake in the program and try to insert a correction. Sometimes it works fine. Other times I get the following error code:
"The deck may be unable to perform the edit since the duration is only 1 frame."
The video I'm trying to insert certainly doesn't have a duration of 1 frame. The edit to tape window has an "In" marked, but no out so there is no duration in that window either. No amount of restarting the program, computer, deck or AJA will correct this.
What in world is going on, and how do I fix it?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.5)

FCP Rescue "trashes" your existing preferences. It also can save your preferences when you know them to be in an uncorrupted state, so the next time you have any problems, you can restore your backup preferences as opposed to trashing them.
Repairing preferences is an activity performed by /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and should be done on a regular basis... Crank up that program and it should be pretty self explanatory.

  • Edit to tape with Kona Lhe

At work tomorrow, I have to lay a 59.94 sequence on to a DVCPRO HD deck with no firewire option. So I'm using my Kona Lhe with SDI output and deck control. A couple things to ponder... Audio and Video ARE getting to the deck through the SDI. I am able to crash record with no problem. I am able to black and code the tape. No problem there. I black the tape from 58:30 to shortly past 1 hour, 30 seconds. I set my "In Point" to 59:00, but when I go to assemble record the sequence, the "Insert", "Assemble", and "Preview" drop zones are disabled. We tried an SR deck and the drop zones were working, but when it went to start the edit to tape, it rewound the deck all the way to the beginning of the tape and then sat there. Tried every possible combination of device preferences. I gotta figure this out if I want to work here again. Patrick, I'm looking in your direction.

This guy was trying to do the same thing:

But...you don't have ASSEMBLE as an option? And you are dragging the sequence from the browser into the EDIT TO TAPE window, right?

  • "Out of Memory" - need to "edit to tape"

I deleted my render files on my current sequence and am hoping that it works - but can anyone tell me if there is a fix for the "out of memory" error - It is not a capture scratch disc space issue or a ram issue... I have rebooted the computer / the app/ switched computers / saved the project to the desktop / rendered in little chunks....
if this re-render of the files doesn't work... im stumped...
    any advice??

Compression settings error...assume you are using the buttons on the edit to tape screen...
    From the web...
“The error message can appear because the Assemble, Insert or Preview buttons refer to whatever is currently loaded into the Viewer window. If there is a Color Matte, Slug, Bars & Tone, or any generated media element currently loaded in the Viewer window, no specific compression settings are applied and Final Cut Pro cannot proceed.
If you are using these generated media elements, they need to be placed into a sequence before they will acquire their specific compression attributes. You can then load the sequence into the Viewer window and use Assemble, Edit, or Preview buttons.
It is probably simpler, however, to simply drag the Sequence icon from the Browser directly to the Assemble, Insert or Preview overlay areas on the right side of the Edit to Tape Window. This saves the additional step of initially loading the Sequence to the Viewer.”

  • Editing to Tape problems

    Hi all,
I am trying to edit to tape going form FCP 504 to a Sony DSR 45 DVCam deck. There seems to be no problems going to the SP Deck, however if I enter the in-point (as per manual) in the master mode edit to tape window, and then drag the sequence over, nothing seems to happen. I thought this may have somethign to do with the "insert timecode" button, which seems to remain yellow all the time... is this switched on or off? Either way I couldn't get it to change state.
I have striped the tape at hour 10:00:00:00. The mastering window never seems to calculate the running time when hooked up to the Sony DSR deck, so I guess its just not seeing the sequence.
For a while I did seem to progress but got a message to the effect that the deck was not in the right "mode" what ever that means. I have looked extensively in the settings for the deck but cannot see anything, I have also tried various different output settings and still no luck. The RS422 seems fine controlling the deck in non edit to tape mode, so I just cannot figure this out.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

    Once again hmmmm.....
I set all my setting for the DVCAM deck to use firewire and all the FCp settings for firewire. Even this ws not working! So I then repatched the video using the components in and hey presto its all works.
It seems I am using the firewire to control the deck but the AJA Kona to output the actual video signal, eventhough no setting should be using the Kona - only direct firewire to firewire! Is this the opposite to what you said patrick? It all just seems so random really, but I guess it has something to do with the Kona and how thats controlling output... not sure.
Just glad to be back up and running, although I have heard that the problem you suggest re frame accuracy may become an issue, but I read that it only usually has an effect on long programs.
Thanks for your help, however please do suggest any reasons behind why only this set up works for me. I'd love to know whats going on for future problem solving.

  • Trying to "edit to tape"

I am trying to use the edit to tape feature so that I can put a certain timecode on the tpe I'm printing out to. ... I am having issues with it ... I black the tape using the edit to tape feature and then try puting in the timecode that i want my video to start at and FCP will not let me drop in the sequence to the edit to tape window.
I am using a panasonic DVCpro HD deck (my video is 1080i)
nd I am trying to go through a blackmagic decklink
please help! I need to be able to start picture at a certain TC on the tape
    Thanks!

I ran into the same issue printing masters of our TV shows. The Outdoor Channel required the show to start at 01:00:00;00. We tried every way possible to get the TC through FireWire to the deck until I came across a blurb in the FCP user manual that says FireWire cannot output TC. You must have another type of deck control, like RS-422. We ended up using an old deck that was laying around to black 5 minutes of TC, then used edit to tape to do an assemble edit starting at the correct TC.
If that's not an option for you, I did run across this thread while searching for an answer:

I didn't try it, but its suppose to work!

  • Edited on MacPro, needs to Write Video to Edit-to-Tape on PowerMac G5?

Anyone else run into this issue?
I edit programs for broadcast on my MacPro at home (same version & settings as Final Cut software on systems at the office). Everything right up through rendering is done on my home system.
I bring it in via G-raid(firewire800) to one of the office systems with decks for printing, both of which are PowerMac G5s.
Open project - timelines look/play rendered as they did when I finished them at home.
Edit to Tape - after I drag/drop the sequence to Insert in the Edit-to-Tape window, Final Cut then proceeds to "write video" for at least 45 minutes as if it's re-rendering the entire sequence.
Through a TON of elimination & troubleshooting, we discovered this error is consistent when our other MacPro in the office gets the same result when an edited/rendered sequence from it is brought over to the G5s.
    What are your thoughts?

I have often found that the rendering FCP needs to do just before an Edit to Tape to be very inconstient. I wonder if it could be writing the render to a different drive on the MacPro other that the G-Raid. I also wonder if it might be rendering to RAM for output.... I've never heard of this so it's just a theory. Do you do a Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown? Might try that. Also do a forum search for "Edit to Tape" as there are many topics on the subject.
    And welcome to the forum.

  • Edit to Tape error

I'm having an error of: "Unable to open the specified Video Output device" when trying to assemble to my DV camcorder. I have been able to use this feature before. I'm able to control my camcorder using the Edit to Tape window and set the in point. I know I can bypass this problem by Printing to Tape, but I want my sequence to start at a specific time, and I want to lay down black, bars and title beforehand.
    Any help is appreciated,
    reicko†

Could be the tape... the error message is saying that it can't read the timecode in effect... tried another tape?
If it fails again, could be the camera needs a cleaning or adjustment. If the recording isn't exactly right, you'll see TC errors then worse...
If it were some sort of software bug, we'd all see the problem...
Just for kicks you could try trashing prefs, but if all else seems to be OK, then it's more likely the tape or the camera. Cleaning cassette?

  • Edit to tape using Firewire

Is it possible? I've just used a SONY M25 DVCAM deck and not been able to send timecode from FCP to the deck. It generates its own timecode and does not recognise timecode via firewire. The manual says it does take timecode via RS422 cable.
Is this standard for all decks? Do any decks allow timecode in from FCP using firewire and therefore precise assemble edit control?
    Thanks for any help!

Hi - I'm not sure if this info will be of any use to you, but -
When using firewire to send video/control/edit to a DV deck your options are pretty limited.
If your client wants the program to start at an even timecode number, you can do something like this:
Put in a blank tape into the deck and rewind it to the head.
Bring up the Edit to Tape window and press the "Black and Code" button
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/BlackCodeButton.jpg!
This will let you stripe the tape with black and code, unfortunately the code starts at 00:00:00:00.
Once you have striped the tape with black and code, you can them make an edit in at specific timecode number - so if you have 1 minute of bars and tone, ten seconds of slate, 5 seconds of black and then your program starts - set your edit in point for 00:01:45:00 and your program will start at 00:03:00:00.
Not as good as being able to start at 1:00:00:00 like the real world, but at least it is a precise start.
Also - if your DV deck only allows for an assemble edit, and not an insert edit, make sure you add a minute or two of Slug to the end of your sequence so there won't be any tape break up close to the end of you program.
    Hope this helps.

  • Incompatible Compression Settings / Edit to Tape

I'm working in Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 and trying to layback some video to Digi-Beta using a Kona3 video card. I'm new to this, so perhaps there are parts of this question I'm leaving out due to lack of knowledge.
I'm getting this dialogue box when I attempt to "insert" in the Edit to Video box --
    Incompatible Compression Settings
You may have attempted to output a clip with compression settings that do not match the current output settings, Try nesting the clip in a sequence with the correct settings.
This is a clip captured in FCP and in it's a sequence with the same exact settings. I've gone through every window and made sure the settings are all AJA Kona3 525 29.97 10 bit. Everything I can find is consistent, and "should" work I think, but doesn't. What are the "correct settings?"
If anyone can offer any help that would awesome. Again, I'm a bit of newbie at this so there is most likely information I forgot to mention or something I overlooked.

#18 Edit to Tape "Incompatible Compression Settings"
    Shane's Stock Answer #18
To Edit to Tape you either need to have your sequence loaded in the VIEWER, or simply drag it from the BROWSER onto the Edit to Tape window and choose Assemble Edit or Insert Edit.
For both methods, the tape needs to be black and coded and have TC already on it. And you need to mark and IN point in the ETT window.
