Edit Video to Audio

Hi: I'm new to Final Cut Pro X, but not to video or editing. I want to edit video to an audio track; how to start?
I cut my first 16mm film mag stripe nearly 40 years ago; This is just a bit different!
Thanks for any help you can provide.

hi,
If you ever need to add dissolves to two vdeo clips, you will need to create a compound clip or a secondary storyline out of those clips. I find this a little cumbersome, but you get used to it.

Just two quick notes about this:
1) in this case, you'll want a secondary storyline, not a compound clip; and you don't actually need to create it, as it will be created automatically when you try to add said transition.
2) I don't find this cumbersome at all... storylines relate to, well, stories... and telling stories is what it is all about
well yes of course I'm only speaking for myself. But i find the creation of storylines/ compund clips cumbersome coz it changes the relationship of my clips to each other in the timeline, and that can be important. And when someway further down the line I want to remove the dissolve and I dont need that new storyline I have to go through some steps to get back to where I was with the clips.
and on the other point, sorry no telling stories is not what its all about, Certainly in some kind of edits it is the main point, but in other projects, there is no stroy telling, just shots cut to music with effects on them, and in those cases sometimes the storyline/compund clip can be a PITA, especially since you cant lock the order that they render in.
But this is just my workflow problems, wont be true for everyone.

  • How to edit video to audio with a sub-frame precision?

As all of my other posts I must begin by stating that this is not an RTFM issue. I have read the manuals and searched the web and this forum already.
Also I beg you to read this question first before answering some nonsense. Ok, off the soapbox now.
I am having issue synching video to audio.
I am editing a music video at the moment at 23.976 fps. There is a master sound track (48/16) to which all of the video must be synched.
I have not found a way of changing the position of a video clips in the timeline relative of the master audio track with a higher than a frame precision in order to obtain a perfect lip-sync.
I am aware of the fact that one should enable "display audio units" in the timeline in order to shift an audio track relative the video with the sub frame precision, which is very useful when doing dialogue replacement to a video. For the video I am still not able to do so. Is it at all possible? Is there a workaround?
How do they achieve a perfect lipsync when they make professional music videos?
    Thank you!

Actually, you can set markers on the audio clip between frames.  I rember this from Jacob Robenbergs book Premiere Pro 2.0 Studio Techniques.
You double click on the audio clip.  It opens in the Source monitor.  Then click on the fly-out menu and select SHOW AUDIO UNITS.
Now in the source monitor you can place a marker (to be used for syncing) anyhere within the frame.  Set a numbered marker.
Now you have a sync marker intraframe on the Audio.  You then sync this audio marker the Frame you need. Select both clips and choose syncronize.
So it is not sub video frame, it is sub Audio frame to the correct video frame start.
See below.  The audio sync marker is in the middle of the frame.  Hope this helps.

  • IMovie lags when editing video and audio

I just bought iMovie yesterday from the Mac App Store. I recorded a DJ set and wanted to edit my Video with better quality audio that i recorded seperately. I find that when editing my video and audio (Matching up audio), there is alot of lag. Especially when scrolling through the video to drag the audio to a certain point to get the audio in sync. This is very frustrating and i feel i just got cheated paying for iMovie 11 when it cant even do a simple job. Please help me resolve this. Thank you!

    Hi
This is not easy in iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 -
What and how did You record the extra audio ? With what tool ?
To be able to keep audio in sync should be recorded with a device with TimeCode. Else it will be near to impossibly. Or extremely tedious even if FinalCut is used.
I would use FinalCut and keep original audio on track 1 and 2 - and the extra on track 3 and 4. Then Show Wave-form - then see if they can match up to each others.
But doing this in iMovie - is nearly impossibly.
IF AUDIO HAS - TimeCode - and there are no drop outs on video or audio then You should be able to exchange original audio with the extra recorded one in iMovie and even move it frame by frame (1/30 sec or 1/25 sec) - in FinalCut audio can be moved much more exact eg 1/100 sec or within a frame
(my miniDisc recorder - is FAR away from exact enough for this)

Please confirm that it is currently IMPOSSIBLE to edit audio or video in Premiere Pro 5.5 to measurements LESS THAN 1 frame.
It appears in versions prior to CS5.0 one could select AUDIO UNITS by right clicking timecode display to edit audio (and presumably
video for that matter) to SAMPLE RATE accuracy.
Despite a long and involved support phone call including taking control of our computer by remote, it appears this is NOT currently
    possible.
If this is indeed so - we will have to adjust our work flow to edit audio OUTSIDE of Premiere.
    Thank you...please confirm and advise.

    Thank you for your input.
YES - I've seen the "right click Time Code display and switch to audio units timeline solution - yet audio units do NOT appear as an option for me...hence all of this drama.
ADOBE - do I have a munged install?  Any other advice?  We keep a clean system (Mac Pro 10.6.11 or whatever is last iteration of SL).  I guess I could try installing into a new User and see if it behaves any differently.
Sigh...we bailed on FCP7 after trying FCPX and also passed on going to Avid MC.  Hope PP is reliable for our work flow...again thx for all help.

  • Editing video and audio tracks together in timeline

I've had problems regarding the editing of audio and video tracks. For example, if I have a clip (1v, 2a tracks) that I put in the timeline and try to cut it using the razor blade, it will only cut the video track. Before, I used to be able to click only once and all the associated tracks (the 2 audio ones in this example) cut together at the same point. I know it's possibly a keyboard shortcut or something like that, but I've looked and looked and now it's making me crazy.

You probably need to turn Linking on (Command L). There is a little button on the upper right corner of the timeline that looks like a chain, click it.
If that doesn't work, you could use the Blade All tool, press B twice.

  • Edit video TO audio track

Er, how are you supposed to edit the video to an audio track as in making a music video where the video has to be lined up to the audio track?
Why is there no timeline? This looks like a big step backwards if this function is gone.
    Vinny.

    Hi Vinny
This seems to be the major drawback - making use of iMovie 08 near NON.
I will stay with iM HD 6, FCE and FCP. May be it is Apple way of pushing
    uppward and forward.
SO THEY OUGHT TO REDUCE THE PRICE WITH SAME as for the investment of
iLife 08 for the people that goes for FinalCutExpress !!
This was the most disapointing upgrade I've seen so far.

  • Edit video and audio at the same time

Is it possible when I remove some of the audio to also remove the same amount of that time from the video?

    Lilybiri,
We did record both the audio and video at the same time in Captivate 8.
The question is: how do we edit the audio and video at the same time?
If I want to cut out 5 seconds of audio can I or will the software cut out that same portion of the video and if so how do we do it?
Do we need to create a Demo or Software Simulation to be able to take advantage of this tool for cutting both together.
Your assistance is very much appreciated.

  • Video/Stereo Audio tracks won't edit together

My video and audio tracks no longer edit as a (linked) unit.
For example, when I select a clip in the timeline and apply the razor tool it only affects the video track....then I must also select the audio file and apply the razor tool again.
I notice this is now a condition with any FCP project I open...so I am guessing it is a Preference issue. Somewhere along the path, I must have changed something...but haven't found the way back and I am sure there is a simple solution.
    I am using FCP 4.5
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Your clips are coming into the Timeline unlinked. Click the link toggle button near the upper right corner of the Timeline window and then bring your clips in.

  • I am trying to edit a .mov video in Premiere Elements 12, but the video and audio do not sync.  They work fine when played in Quicktime.

    Hello,
I am trying to edit a .mov video in Premiere Elements 12, but the video and audio do not sync as soon as I load it into the program.  It appears to work fine in Quicktime.
    Thanks in advance.

    mbgoodwi
Thanks for the reply. This is the plan.
Open Premiere Elements 12/12.1 to the Expert workspace.
In the Expert workspace, go to File Menu/New/Project and Change Settings.
In the Change Settings area, select the project preset
    NTSC
    AVCHD
    AVCHD LITE 720p30
OK out of there. In the New Project dialog that appears, note that it has your new project preset named.
Be sure to put a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on This Project". And, then OK out of there.
Back in the Premiere Elements 12 Expert workspace, use Add Media/Files and Folders to bring your video
into Project Assets. From Project Assets drag your video to the Timeline Video Track 1/Audio Track 1.
Is there an orange line over the content in the Timeline. See screenshot for orange line to which I am referring.
There should be no colored line over the content if the project preset matches the video properties. But, if you do see
that orange line, then render the Timeline content by pressing the Enter key of the computer main keyboard or press
the Render button above the Timeline.
Do your video/audio now play back in the Edit area monitor in sync?
Please let us know the result, and then we will decide what next.
    Thanks.

  • Cannot edit video! FCE keeps freezing video track, running audio only

I am enormously frustrated. My FCE has stopped working smoothly! It is freezing in arbitrary places during clips, sometimes for a bit & then starting at a later point, or just freezing while the audio continues to play. I have reinstalled Snow Leopard and updates, reinstalled FCE 4 and updates. I have installed smcFanControl to make sure nothing is overheating. I have vacuumed air vents. I have prayed, yelled, cried.
My video camera is a Canon Vixia S100 HD, and only the updated version of FCE can read the files. I know that. I've been editing with FCE for a year now. I think it may be a graphics reader incompatibility or bug, or perhaps even related to Flash since the problem began when Apple announced it would not be going forward with Adobe Flash.
I am a videopoet and frankly can't take my iMac in for servicing at this point.
What is most interesting about this problem is that I can edit "blind" -by guess work- and upload to YouTube or Facebook and the videos are absolutely fine. No freezing, no dislocate of video and audio synch.
Also, I tried to watch my latest clip in Picasa, which is on my desktop, and it began freezing in the same odd way during playback.
Since the videos upload fine, it's not the video itself, but the player in the iMac. It feels like a bug to me, a kink, something between OS X 10.6.4 -it didn't happen before that upgrade- and whatever video player the iMac uses... since freezing of raw video clips occurs across two programs, FCE & Picasa.
Because I can no longer edit my videos properly I am quite fairly rabidly mad, as you can imagine, struggling with these issues for many many hours, and today spending the afternoon re-installing my OS and FCE and upgrades to no avail.
I am hoping someone can enlighten me on what is going on, or if there is a patch for this particular issue.
    Thanks!
    Brenda

Check the item properties of the clips in your FCE project and let us know their specs. Also, if you have any still images in the Timeline, make sure they are in RGB Color Mode - NOT Grayscale, Indexed or CMYK.
Also let us know where the media is stored (hard drive type and formatting and how it is connected to your Mac).

  • Can I use iMovie to edit and enhance both video and audio of my homemade DVDs?

I have a lot of homemade DVDs converted from old VHS tapes. The video and audio quality need to be edited/enhanced. Can I use my iMovie 11 for this task? If not what are my options? Thanks.

    Hi
There are several layers to this Q
    • VHS-tapes has a low quiality as is
    • converted to sort of .mpe2 to a DVD to be played on standard DVD-player - Quality is futher lost
    • converting it back to DV or AIC - and more quality is lost
    • edit it in iMovie'08 to 11 - even more quality is lost due to that when going from Event's to Project's - every second line building up the picture is discarded (as non of them - iM'08 to 11 - works woith interlaced SD-video
So if quality is of any interest - I would - and are doing
    • Converting from VHS-tapes
    - via a CANOPUS ADVC-300 - to digital
    - in via FireWire to
    - to iMovie HD6 or FinalCut (any version) - asa they all keep 100% of the interlaced SD-quality
    - edit and put out on miniDV tape (still 100% preserved) or to a DVD made in iDVD with all that keep as high quality possibly. (No Video-DVD can keep 100% quality - it's due to standard and amount of compressing)
If Quality is of no importance - then
    • DVDs needs to be converted to DV or AIC and this is no free standard on any Mac - You need a converting program as
    - MPEG StreamClip (free on internet) + BUT it needs the .mpeg2 Component from Apple to work ($20)
    - Roxio Toast™ - can also be used to back engineer - BUT this cost's much more - still to me all extras was more than worth it
    - Analog way - DVD-player - A/D-box - import via FireWire

  • Adding audio to edited video

Hey, I've been editing a short movie with premiere and I accidentally removed the audio from half the footage and can't restore it, all the auto save files saved it after I finished editing.  All I want to do is get the audio from the edited video, as the video clips are there but the audio aren't, only in the original clip does it have the audio.
    Thanks,
    Josh

If the original clip stil has the audio, perhaps you could insert this on the end of your sequence.  Unlink the audio, then delete the original clip and slide the unlinked audio back into the position you want it along the timeline.

  • Cut audio from a video file and edit in an audio editor?

Using Pre 9 and a Nikon D7000 video file: Is it possible to cut the audio portion of a movie clip (where the audio was recorded in the camera and is part of the import), edit in an audio editor (I like Sony Sound Forge Studio), then paste it back into the clip?

I use Steve's method all of the time, and edit the Audio output in Adobe Audition. You will want to Export/Share to PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit, and keep that format both going and coming back into PrE. Remember that you will be working with an Audio file, that is the full (or almost) Duration of the Timeline. When you Import that edited Audio file, give the program a few moments to Conform that newly Imported PCM/WAV for editing. I suggest not touching the computer, until Conforming has completed 100%, and the little progress bar in the lower-right of the GUI has disappeared. If the Imported Audio file is short, and your computer is fast, you might not even see that progress bar, but the Conforming has taken place, just the same.
I like to keep the original Audio on its Audio Track(s), and just use Window>Audio Mixer to Mute that/those Track(s), leaving only my edited Audio on its own Track un-Muted. This is a "fail-safe," just in case I change my mind along the way, and wish to revert to the original Audio for some reason. It is much easier to Mute-Unmute, than to gather up all of that original Audio again.
    Good luck, and happy editing,
    Hunt

  • Audio Quality when Editing Video

    Hello!
In my currenty project I have 2 video tracks and one separate audio track that I imported from garageband (via itunes). Right now, I'm trying to switch between the two video files, by spliting the video in the right chunks, and changing the opacity so only one or the other is showing (hopefully this makes sense).
When I split the video file or edit it, the audio file gets very fuzzy. In fact there's this weird sound in the background, that almost sounds like a record spinning around or something like that.
It's not in the itunes/garageband file, so iMovie is adding it or making it somehow.
Has anyone else experienced this?? And is there a solution?
    Thank you!
    -Nick
