Edit with External Editor not working?

In my iPhoto advanced preferences I checked the box to edit with external editor. When I ctrl click a RAW picture it doesn't open my Adobe Elements? Anybody know why?

  • Edit with external editor command in iPhoto

I know there is a way to set IPhoto so you can use both iPhoto and PS Elements editors to edit photos.  I have seen the "*Edit with external editor*" command within the Edit header within iPhoto but can't figure out how to do this.  I found the below and tried it but it doesn't allow me to set two editors within Preferences.  What am I doing wrong?
+"If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and select "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds"+
    Thanks,
    Scott

FIRST set external editor to PSE
THEN change the selection back (NOT TWO selections - just this one) edit in main window leaving PSE as the external editor
once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window".
+You are working VERY hard to make this dificult - *it is simple*+
Set PSE as the external editor THEN select edit in main window as the default without changing PSE being the external editor - One selection - EDIT IN MAIL WINDOW
NOW double clicking will edit in iPhoto -- Right clicking (or control clicking) will give you a contextual menu allowing you to choose PSE as the editor

  • Aperture - Edit with External Editor - Photoshop

    Hi,
I recently made my first attempt via Aperture to "Edit with External Editor" and in my case I have the preferences set to export to Photoshop CS4 Extended. The External Editor File Format (in preferences) selected is TIFF and as advised by Apple's Help menu this is set at 16-bit. The External Editor Color Spaces is set to Adobe-RGB (1998).
I selected an image with some barrel distortion, hit the export button, and Aperture sent the new master to Photoshop. I did my fixing and saved. This automatically sends the updated file to Aperture. This is very handy and practical but I was shocked to see the size of the new and fixed file. The original file was a JPEG at 4MB and the new fixed file was a colossal 200+ MB file. I ended up throwing away the new file - too large.
I am just wondering if this is normal? This is my first time using the Edit with External Editor in Aperture and I am also quite clueless about using Photoshop efficiently and properly. Could I have done something differently and received the new and fixed file at a smaller size?
Thanks for your advice and help.

    This is normal.
TIFF files get rather large and the 200 MB sounds about right. If I send a 1.63 MB JPEG at the same settings in PS CS5, I get a 134 MB TIFF after applying the Lens Correction filter and saving.
If I send the same file as a TIFF 8-bit in Adobe-RGB (1998), I get back a 54.73 MB file.
You could therefore send as an 8-bit TIFF to reduce the size. Additionally, the PSD format tends to return a slightly smaller file size (51.xx MB in the case here).
A JPEG file is actually only an 8-bit file, so it isn't really necessary to go to 16-bit, but many users like to protect against further degradation of the JPEG when editing externally (especially from posterization where smooth gradients - such as a sky - start to break down into visible steps in the color transition).
I personally send as TIFF 8-bit in the sRGB color space and if the image shows degradation, then I might change to the TIFF 16-bit (or simply not use that image).

  • Can't export images edited with external editor

Images edited within iPhoto '11 export to the desktop without a problem but images that have been edited with an external editor (Photoshop CS4) will not export. The following dialog come up:
    Exporting...
    Unable to create /Users/<name>/Desktop/
    Cancel
Don't know if this has any bearing but the problem is on my wife's iMac, not my MacPro.
Any clues to the source of the problem will be appreciated.

Thanks TD for your input. While I could not get the rebuild to work (it would show 97% done then hang up), it helped me isolate the problem. I ended up deleting all the images that were edited by PS CS4 then tried to do the rebuild again. Still no luck. I then opened the file sans the edited PS images and it worked.
I then edited one of the images using PS CS4 as the external editor and that worked. I then exported the image to the desktop and that also worked. The only think I can think of is that the original edits were done in iPhoto 9.0 and I have since updated it to 9.1. Whatever - it works and the only loss were some edits on a dozen or so family candid shots.
Your help in getting me headed is most appreciated.

  • Suddenly renames  files edited with external editor

Not sure what I have done but now when I "edit file with..." (Photoshop CS5) using Aperture3 the version name is changed in Aperture.  Looking in PShop it is dislapying the correct masterfile name but on return to Aperture3 it is changing the version name. When I have finished in PShop I just close and it says "save". I click "Yes" I don't do any "Save As..." to confuse things.  Aperture is now changing the version name using a prefix and counter that I used for file imports on a job about 3 shoots previously so not even the most recent one!  How do I get it back to creating a version (PSD file) with the same name as the master.
    Thanks for reading this.

  • "open in external editor" not working

I use "open in external editor" a lot to edit pictures in Photoshop, but it has stopped working. Now it launches Photoshop, but doesn't open/load the relevant image.
What has changed since I had this working?
I had a couple of kernel panics, and used "archive and install" to re-install Tiger, and then 10.4.3.
I am using iphoto 5.0.4 and Photoshop CS 8.
    Any remedies/help gratefully received.

    Hi Nige,
It is a Photoshop problem and probably because it is missing files.
this is an old copy/paste from MacFixit it.
Try this suggestion I copied and pasted from MacFixIt first
"Photoshop CS: Fix for file opening problem Yesterday we reported that since installing Mac OS X 10.4, Photoshop CS refuses to open any new files or create any new documents, reporting a "program error" when one tries to do so. Our previously reported workaround involved re-installing Photoshop CS, but MacFixIt reader Bryan Schappel now offers a faster solution:
"This happens because the Archive and Install option does not copy over a necessary folder for Photoshop. The critical folder is called 'ScriptingAdditions' and is stored in the main Library folder. This folder contains one file 'Adobe Unit Types' that makes Photoshop open files that have been double-clicked or dragged to the PS icon in the Dock.
"Simply move this folder (and file) from the 'Previous System' backup to the Library folder, relaunch Photoshop and all is well again. No need to completely re-install.""
I copied an pasted instead of putting the link in because it is not on the front page and you would have to search around to find it. Hope it is ok to do that here. If you don't still have the folder then you have to reinstall PhotoShop.

  • ICE edit, in context editor not working?

I can't seem to activate the in context editor for the site newmovers.businesscatalyst.com. The 'Edit' button is there, and when I click it the link changes to /icecube but nothing else happens. I contacted BC's support team and was told "I suspect the reason why the edit button is not working is, you have custom code placed on the pages."
It works on my other sites, just not here.
Has anyone else had an issue like this? I wasn't aware everyone else was using non-custom code for their sites! Is it possible that I have some Javascript or other code that is disrupting?
    Any help greatly appreciated!

After some back & forth, the BC support team was right that it was my code which was breaking the ICE:
I had two div's with the same id on my home page. Not sure why that broke the in context editor, but maybe this will help someone else out down the road.

  • Edit with external editor ignores colorspace setting?

    Hi,
I've successfully gotten Export presets to write files in my desired colorspace (ProPhoto). There is a similar setting for the Cmd-Shift-O "Open in external editor" export in the Preferences pane. But, no matter what I set it to, it ships an AdobeRGB file to Photoshop.
Am I missing something, or is this a bug?
    Ben

Works fine for me and have never had an issue so that means A) it works B) Not a bug that affects everyone. I am on the latest version of Aperture 3 but have never experienced this in any version. Might be a problem with your preferences in Aperture - try trashing them.
Also make sure that your photoshop preferences on color handling are setup correctly to respect the embedded profile and is not converting it to working space on open. This is usually the case with issues like this.

  • Editing with External Editors

Heya folks, a quick query as i suspect ive probably missed something, i have Pixelmator installed as a cheaper image editor with much of the functionality of Photoshop, and i want to use it as my external editor. How do i go about doing that? I go to Images > Edit With> but the option for external editor is greyed out.
    Any ideas?
    cheers
    Rowan

from page 350 of the user's manual:
To set an external editor in Aperture:
1 Choose Aperture > Preferences, or press Command-Comma (,), then click Export.
2 Click the Choose button below the External Image Editor field, navigate to an
application in the Select Application dialog, then click Select.
The application’s name appears in the External Image Editor field.
3 Choose the appropriate 16-bit file format (TIFF or PSD) from the External Editor File
    Format pop-up menu.
This is the file format Aperture uses when opening files in external editors.

  • External Editor Not Working

I'm running Lightroom 4 on a Mac OSX 10.6.8 and using Elements 10 as my external editor.  When I right click and select EDIT IN  and choose Elements, nothing happens.  When setting up Elements as my editor for LR, I'm sure I chose the right folder for Elements.  I also tried deleting and restoring the defaults and then setting up Elements again.  No dice.
    Here's what I'm seeing -
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Problem solved.  Downloaded and installed LR RC 4.2

  • Captivate 7 - edit with Power Point not working

I am working with Power point slides in my captivate 7 project. When I try to edit the slide using power point I can delete words off the slide, but I can't add any words or letters. It is like my keyboard won't work. Any reasons why?

    Hi there,
    Greetings from Adobe.
Which Operating System do you have?
Make sure that Captivate 7 is updated to 7.0.1.237 (Help> About Adobe Captivate),  is Captivate 7 32 bit or 64 bit?
Also tell the version of Power Point?
Create a blank new pptx in Power Point and create a new project in Captivate from that new presentation and edit it's slide in Power Point, just to test whether that issue reoccurs on another project.

  • Password reset with external directory not working in realm mode

    I am using SUn acess manager 7 2005 @4 patch 5
I have configured a realm to point to external directory .I am able to create the user in the subject tab. Able to authenticate to the user in realm and set its security question.

  • New Photo in OS X option to edit photo with external editor such as Photoshop has been removed. will this be back!

    Hi
I have just updated my iPhoto to Photos in OS X and i have noticed that the option to edit photo with external editor such as Photoshop has been removed. will this be back!
Its now a pain to send a photo directly to my favourite photo editing software.
    Ross

    Thanks Terence
Totally understand being a new app and not an update.
So i'm a ammeter photographer and i like the way i can view my photos in iPhoto and i'm happy with the new App for this also, however i like to edit my photos in PS from time to time and i shoot in raw. As i can no longer select edit in external editor from the photo app i tired to drag a RAW photo to PS but this didn't work. i then tried dragging to desktop but this then made a jpeg so i loose my raw advantage. I would like to be able to find my original raw photos easily so i can edit them in PS.
    Hope that makes sense?

  • "edit in external editor" doesn't work for me

    Hello,
I am having trouble getting iPhoto to allow me to edit in an external editor.
I went to preferences and chose Photoshop CS3 as my external editor and I set my "double clicks photo" to "edits photos", but when I try to right click and "edit in external editor" I click on it but nothing happens.
I also tried leaving PS CS3 open but still nothing happens.
Also, when I try to double click to edit the photo, nothing happens either. Even if I set iPhoto to "edit in main window" it doesn't go to edit mode by double clicking.
I'm not really sure what the problem is, so if somebody can help me understand this, that would be great.

    yurickim:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and try again. If that doesn't help log into another account and try there. If you don't have a second account create one as it's a great troubleshooting too. It it works in the second account there's something amiss with your current account. It could be a bad preference file, other than iPhoto's, that could be causing the problem. Here's how to verify if that's the case:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard
1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - Make a duplicate copy of the Preferences A folder on the Desktop as a precautionary backup.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here.
6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Help with resaving images once edited in External Editor

Using Aperture 1.5.3 and importing all my images in RAW from my Nikon D1.
    Imports all images just fine.
When I open an image with External Editor I go to my copy of Photoshop CS2 with no problems.
However, don't seem to be able to figure out how to save this image into the same part of the Aperture library once I've edited it (maybe giving it a name like xxx_edit or perhaps what would be better is Apeture recoginising it as a new version). Currently, what I am doing is saving it to a working directory then reloading this image into the relevant part of the Aperture library using Import. Doing this is not exactly efficient and also means that Aperture doesn't recognise this edited image as a version of the original.
Is there an easier way of doing this? Can't seem to find it in the on line manual.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    You're over-complicating it.
Simply hit File>Save once you're done in photoshop.
