Edit with iMovie on external monitor?

Hi all -
First generation Macbook Pro, 15", running 10.5.8. fully patched. Just purchased and installed iMovie '09, and started editing some video using the internal screen, no problems. However, my usual configuration is to run my computer closed, with an external monitor, mouse, and keyboard. In this configuration, iMovie starts up, but shows nothing except the menus in the title bar. When I select "Window -> Hide Project Library" or "Window -> Show Project Library", the library window slides in or out from the left side of my screen, but then immediately vanishes. I can bring up the Preferences window, but no content shows at all. What's going on? I've seen some suggestions that iMovie won't work on an external monitor, but that seems absolutely insane to me - I haven't encountered that problem, ever, with the configuration I'm running. One issue may be that I'm not using a DVI cable - I'm using a DVI-to-RGB connector to my external monitor. Might that make a difference? The external monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster 912N, running at its maximum 1280x1024 resolution.
Thanks in advance.

Never mind. Reboot cleared up the problem...

  • How do I use my late 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output.

May be this question has been asked thousand times. how do I use my mid 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output. if apple hasn't removed that feature and has just moved that functinoality to thunderbolt then how can I use it. currently there is no laptop available with thunderbolt output. no 3rd party converter available. whats the use of having feature on latest functionality if we cant use it. I wish they would have made one port has mini-dvi and other thunderbolt for backward compatibility untill some vendor comes up with converter.

    It Says :
Mac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) and later computers support Target Display Mode via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2 m) when the source is another Thunderbolt-equipped computer.
Name one computer model/vendor which has thunderbolt as output for display + audio. this is so stupid to move to new technology without availbility of its compatible devices.

can videos not recorded on the new ipad be edited with imovie?

    Hi
Please rephrase Your Question - I'm not clever enough to get it
There are lot's of Cameras that record in lot's of different ways that can be edited in iMovie.
No iMovie can not use all Video-Codec's in the World - they are zillions and many needs to be converted to something iMovie can open and work with.
    • Still digital Cameras as Nikons - Import into iPhoto and then in iMovie Event's window import from iPhoto-videos title
    • miniDV tape Cameras - connects only via FireWire - then just Import from Camera into Event's
    • SD-Card or Hard Disk Cameras Connects most ofthen via USB and Import from "File or other"
    • from Internet - (out of my range - Guessing) - most will need to be converted into something iMovie likes - I would try
    - StreamingDV .dv - or -
    - AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec)
So as You see - I don't get it !

  • Slow performance with high resolution external monitor

    Hello,
    I recently bought HP EliteBook 840 G1, i7-4600U, 8gb ram, HD intel graphics 4400, 256GB SSD.
Everything would be fine, but when I connect my 30" Dell monitor with 2560x1600 resolution as an external monitor, the performance of the computer drops significantly to the point where it becomes unconvenient to work with programs that require more resorces.
I understand that it might be due to limitations of the hardware (most probably graphic card is too weak ? ), but still I'd like to ask if there is anything I could do to boost the performance of HP Elitebook with high resolution external monitor.

Hi, you should use renderMode = gpu in your application descriptor xml file, especially for latest android devices. But gpu is not a good idea for old devices, so you may also try renderMode = direct.
Honestly, I don't think those android devices made in china have good performance, especially gpu.

  • Problem with a new external monitor

I'm having some trouble with my new external monitor (Samsung BX 2231)
Last week when I connected the screen, there where no problems at all. I was using it as an extension of my desktop (as a second screen).
When I changed the wallpaper of the external monitor, I accidentally chose the wrong file (I'm not sure which one), From that moment, my dock is freezing.
Every time I tried to connect the monitor (as an second monitor), the dock is crashing.
I can use the monitor as an 'clone', then everything is working fine. When I change it back to be a second screen, the dock crashed again.
To solve the problem, I tried many options:
    - Reset the PRAM
    - Reset the SME
    - Remove the file 'com.apple.windowsserver.plist
    - Start the mac in 'safe' mode
    - Remove all the images from the images folder (where I chose the 'wrong' file)
What are the other options? can someone help me?
    Regards YkeBert

I have the same problem. Do you also have these in the system log:
kernel: Sound assertion in AppleHDADriver at line 1078
Thinking about reinstalling 10.8 and then applying 10.8.2.

  • Video Problem - Cannot "Edit with iMovie"

In Aperture 3, when I right-click a video and select "Edit with iMovie", iMovie starts up but my video file does not appear. iMovie just sits there.
I have tried switching the "Edit with" program under Preferences to Final Cut Express, and FCE is able to display and edit the video. Just not iMovie.
I am shooting with a Nikon D300s at 24 FPS, 1280x720, under AVI.
Does anyone else have this problem or know of a fix?

Like you the idea of using Aperture to manage my video appeals to me, in my case though it is not practical as I could not keep the amount of vision I shoot live on the system.
The workflow I would suggest for your video content would be.
Set up a location for the video to be stored, a fast drive is needed for video editing.
Set up Aperture so that it imports the video by reference and store it on the aforementioned drive.
Sort, review and rate your videos using aperture.
Create an album containing the vision you want to use in a program.
In your video editing application, click import, in the import dialogue box you should now be able to navigate to the media and movies area of the import dialogue box, select APerture and select the album you want to use for the edit.

  • I an trying to do video editing with iMovie 11  9.0.8, i have no sound. OS X Lion 10.7.5 is my operating system any suggestions Please.

I am trying to do video editing with iMovie 11  9.0.8 .  I am running OS X Lion 10.7.5   I have no sound, any suggestions please.

This seems to have fixed the issue: on your desktop, hold down the [OPT] key and click on "Go" in the menu bar; holding down the [OPT] click on Library, find Preferences, and then delete all the files that start with "com.apple.itunes.XXXX.plist" where the "XXX" is whatever other things may exist - as long as they end in "plist". From my experience, preference files are rebuilt by the system after the next restart, so you have very little worry of losing any important data; the worst that could happen )and NOT in this instance, but for other plist files) is that you may have to reset the application "preferences" again when you next start it up, to act or appear in a "preferred" customized way for you.
Once you delete the .plist files, empty the Trash, and either log out or restart the computer. Once you're back up and operational, start iTunes and your iDevices should reappear in the sidebar (if that's open) and/or at the top of the screen (if that view is enabled).
Hope that helps. It definitely fixed my problem!

  • Unable to edit with iMovie

    Hi,
I'm a new Mac owner. I think I made a good choice, but with anything new there is always a period of "getting to know you". That's why I'm glad to see such an active forum community here.
So, here goes... I have a digital camera that records .MOV videos, and I'd like to edit these videos with iMovie. I converted a few of these files using VisualHub. The .MOV files became .avi files. When I try to create a new project in iMovie, the view screen appears black, but the file name appears at the top of the view screen as: "My Movie.avi (MPEG-4)". Everything looks like it's working, but no video shows up to edit. Please let me know what I'm doing wrong, or not doing, etc.
    Thanks,

    Hello Castaway,
    I'm a new Mac owner. I think I made a good choice
I know you did don't let minor problems spoil it!
    Now the serious part:
You'll need to learn a little about codecs (and containers). AVI and MOV are both containers that can contain a number of different codecs (a .mov file is a Quicktime movie file, while the .avi container is usually used on Windows platforms).
Have a look at Karsten Schlüter's website for some more on codecs:
    http://homepage.mac.com/akschluter/CODEXX/
You say that your camera records a .mov file, but not in what codec. To find that out, try opening your file with QT, then hit Cmd+I to get the info on your video file.
I converted a few of these files using VisualHub. The .MOV files became .avi files.
I suspect that you have converted your files to DivX format (which is a flavor of MPEG-4). Instead convert your files to DV format, which is the native format for iMovie. Be warned, however, that every conversion makes for loss of quality.
    hope this helps

  • What bit rate to record for editing with iMovie?

I just bought a Sony hd pj260 video cam and need to know what to set the bit rate for shooting to edit on a MacBook pro using iMovie (snow leopard). I have a choice of 60p (28 M), 60i (24 M) or 60i (17M). I'm sure these will mean something to someone. They currently are Greek to me. Can someone advise me please. Leaving for vacation in a couple of days....
    Thanks
    DJ

60P wlll not work with iMovie, unless you are comfortable hacking the internals of iMovie.
60i will work and the higher bit rate, the better.
    Best would be 30P.

  • Macbook Pro with Retina Display with Dell U2412m external monitor

I recently purchased the Dell U2412m monitor on Amazon hoping to use it as my external monitor to my Macbook pro 15" with retina display, however, when I finish setting it up, there's a red/pink vertical line showing on my screen. Does anyone know what seems to be the problem and how do I get rid of the line. Is there anything I need to set up on the monitor to make it compatible with MBP with retina?? Thanks in advance.

I used a mini display port to display port cable and my screen looked fine. My problem was that the USB ports did not work and dealing with Dell customer service was a nightmare.

  • Late 2009 imac with dead LCD; external monitor?

    Hello, all
I need some help.  The LCD on my late 2009 iMac has failed.  I took it into the Apple Store and they told me it was dead and it would be $500+ to replace it, which I do not have.
The machine is intact, however, other than that!  The Apple Store rep even told me that they tried it with an external monitor, to validate that the video card is working, and it worked fine.  Great news!
My question, however, is how do I get it to boot to an external monitor?
I have booted the mac in target disk mode, booted from that target disk on another mac, and changed the settings so that the display is mirrored onto a second monitor.  When I boot into the iMac, however, I get the Apple Logo and the "white screen of death" and the machine never finishes loading using the external monitor.  I need to know if there is some way to force it to use that monitor for the primary display.
Cheers all, and thanks for any help!

    Hello,
I'm wondering if boting from it's drive on the oother Mac didn't write some of the other Mac's Monitor info to it?
Instead of Mirroring, what if you make the external monitor the main one by dragging the Dock to it?
If you can ever get it to boot, this thread may be helpful if you want mirroing...

  • Help with Resolution on External Monitor

I want to set my HP Envy 15t to drive an external monitor, not as an extension, but rather as my primary monitor.  My external monitor is a Viewsonic VX2250, a little older, and requires that I use a HDMI-to-VGA adapter.  (The Viewsonic also has DVI inputs...not sure it that would make a difference.)  On my current tower setup, I use the monitor in its recommended (or native mode) setting of 1920x1080.  I like this screen a lot.
The adapter is a Bytecc HM-VGA005 and the specs seem to suggest that it can handle a variety of video resolutions - Full HD (1080p), WUXGA (1920x1200 RB mode), and UXGA (1600x1200 VESA mode).
The 15t currently runs in the recommended resolution of 1366x768.  If I understand the specs right, in HD mode it's 1366x768 and in FHD mode it's 1920x1080.   The graphics card is an Intel HD Graphics 4600.  Is this the reason that I can only get HD resolution and not FHD resolution on the laptop?
But whenever I plug all this together and try and change the laptop screen resolution settings, the external monitor only shows 1024x768...pretty lousy.  I have it so that the laptop screen is dark and only the external monitor is on.  But there doesn't seem to be any choices I can make to improve this resolution.  I've checked to see that the graphics driver is up to date and it is.
What do I do to get the best screen I can on the external monitor?  Would buying a new monitor with HDMI inputs achieve better results?  Do I need a different adapter?
    Thanks...Kurt
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Me again!  Well, it was a bit of the nut behind the wheel.    I checked in with the store that I've been buying my cables, adapters, etc.  He said to bring the Viewsonic monitor by to see what might be going on.  As I was setting up, he asked about power to the adapter.  I had the USB cable but didn't think it was needed.  But after putting everything together in addition to power to the HDMI-VGA adapter, I could see I was getting the resolution that I was hoping for.  Why it worked on the Dell monitor, no clue...maybe a better monitor or different VGA cable.  The Bytecc adpater didn't come with any instructions, so I just didn't know.
All is well.  Hope this helps someone in the future.

  • Help please? problems with screen resolution & external monitor

had a look around this forum and seen many questions about screen resolution when connecting to an external monitor but unfortunately, non that help me answer my problem.
got a brand new macbook a few months ago and today bought a HP v220 22" external monitor.
I am new to the idea of external monitors and am unsure what i am doing wrong settings-wise. it seems that no matter what resolution i set either my macbook display, or the external monitor display to. the external monitor is still not sharp.
Im not sure how to explain what i need but basically i need it to be so that things appear on the external the same size as they do on my macbook screen, so that i will have more space to work in on my external monitor (i am a graphics student) but at the moment what appears on the monitor is lieterally just a magnified version of my macbook screen, hence it lacks clarity.
the highest resolution offered in the menu for my macbook screen is 1280x800 and my external is recommended to be set at 1680x1050.
what settings should i have to get the resolution right?
i will be so so grateful if you can help. i think ive tried every single display setting but to no avail. so please help me!

The 13.3" screen on the MacBook running at 1280 x 800 will have a ppi (pixels per inch) of around 113. A 22" monitor running 1680 x 1050 will have a ppi of around 90. So it is natural that it will look magnified compared with the MacBook. The two displays have different a pixel pitch.
Since there are no monitors with ~113 ppi out there in the market, what you want to do with having the same size and sharpness between the MB and a monitor will not be possible.
If you ran the MB's screen at 1024 x 640 (not even sure if that is an available choice), then the two screens would match in terms of "magnification." But the MB isn't going to look very sharp running such a low, non-native format.

  • Editing with iMovie

This may sound like a basic (or stupid) question, but here goes . . . .
I have a client that took a continueous video and now he wants me to edit it.
We all know that iMove will divide scenes into frames each time one stops the video camera, so we can edit it. But how does one edit it when their are NO SCENE BREAKS.
If iMovie cannot do this, then can someone recommend an (affordable) solution?
    Thanks,
    Dan Uff

The best solution for you depends on what you mean by "affordable". A solution may also depend in what format your large clip has arrived at your doorstep. Anything less than NTSC DV or equivalent PAL, for example, one could justify using razor cuts with iMovie. If you are dealing with pretty good quality video, then you may consider options.
iMovie is not intended for careful editing, especially if the starting material is one large clip. The slicing and dicing possible with iMovie is not flexible nor controlled enough to include other media components such as audio (voice over, music) and photos, panning etc with the precision required in a truly professional piece of work. Even a seemingly trivial task of keeping track of and annotating the various subclips you create by slicing with iMovie becomes a major effort. The time and effort required to use iMovie to handle the editing, while feasible, can easily distract the user, in my opinion, from the editing. The next step up is FCE or even the leap to FCP.
If your client is paying you to edit, then consider using an application that provides you with the tools you need to edit.
