Editable region in the body
I am trying to make customizable body IDs so that I can do
anchors for "you are here" visited links on my website. Here is the
code that I'm following:
Here are three elements of the "you are here link":
The body ID: <body id="about">
The link: <a href="about.html" id="aboutLink">::
About</a>
And the CSS:
body#about a#aboutLink {
background-color: #fff;
color: #900;
Now, I know that it works because I've done this many times
with pages that are done outside of Dreamweaver. HOWEVER, because I
am using templates and nested templates, I cannot define the id
while using this feature because Dreamweaver does not allow me to
create an EDITABLE region before the <body> element in the
HTML code.
So far, my work around solution was to edit the .html and
.dwt (template) files in notepad and sneak in my <body
id="#">. However, this solution proved to be ephemeral because
as soon as you edit the template files within Dreamweaver again, it
overwrites anything that was done outside of Dreamweaver.
I need to create "you are here" links, but can't think of any
other way to do them. Thank you for your feedback.

How do I remove an extra editable region in the head of a specific page?
I have a single-template website. My template has the standard two editable regions in the head ("title" and "head"). Somehow, one of my pages ended up with three editable regions in the head - two named "head" as well as title. My template won't update this page because the editable regions don't match. How do I remove this extra editable region from the head of the page? I can't modify it on the page itself, of course, and I can't remove it by modifying the template because it's not part of the template.
Thanks in advance!Your child page would not contain any editable regions if it wasn't attached to a Template. Perhaps you nested templates which is the wrong thing to do.
Go to Modify > Templates > Detach from Template.

Editing non-editable regions as the webmaster
I'm just learning to use Contribute, and I want to enable my client to edit some regions and not others (obviously). But I want to be able to edit the non-editable regions myself, in Dreamweaver. For example, I don't want them to be able to mess with the nav bar, but I do want to be able to specify which nav item is active when creating a new page. When I open a page based on a template and try to change those regions, it won't let me. Is there any way to make a region something I can edit, but my client can't? Thank you!
In Contribute you can add/edit the contents inside the editable regions only. You can edit the contents of the non-editable region of the template using Dreamweaver.

Firefox shows a blinking "edit" cursor in the body of all websites when I click.
Clicking a button within a webpage puts a blinking text cursor in the body of the site, as if editing a Word document. It's not causing any other problems besides being really annoying and distracting, but it only just started today. I've tried restarting Firefox with add-ons disabled, as well as reinstalling Firefox clean.
1. try pressing F7
2. system restore -
Can't edit any editable region but the first one!
I have a CSS layout and I am trying to edit documents that
are based on a template that has CSS only layout, the only Editable
Region I can edit from within Dreamweaver seems to be the first
one, with a Flash object in it, all the other ones I can
double-click until I am blue in the face and I cannot get DW to let
me into edit the area, it's driving me crazy.
What can I do to fix this!
Please help.Show me the template, please.

Editable regions for the new BC editor
Hi
Business Catalyst have now added a new incontext editor with new editable regions that is not supported inside Dreamweaver.
Will the new editable regions be added to Dreamweaver in the near future?
Morten Håland - Sitespark.noHi SiteSpark,
I have forwarded our query to the product team. Will get back after I hear from them.

Error when editing region of the placeholder
I defined a placeholder using the following documentation
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/content-management/ucm/sitestudio10gr4tutorials/AddingContent/addingcontent_viewlet_swf.html
To summarize, following are the steps that I followed
1. Created following site assets
a. One element definition with name BodyContent of wysiwyg
b. One region definition of name SampleRegionDef. Then added the above element to this region definition
c. One region template by choosing SampleRegionDef as region def with name SampleRegionTemp. Then inserted the BodyContent element in the region template page. there is no other content in the region template
d. One Placeholder definition with name SamplePlaceHolderDef and selected the SampleRegionDef as the region and SampleRegionTemp as the template.
2. Next I have created a place holder with name SamplePlaceHolder and selected the SamplePlaceHolderDef for primary and secondary pages.
3. I placed the SamplePlaceHolder on the home page.
4. I assigned a new contributor data file to the place holder (region template)
After doing this I launched the site in contributor mode. I noticed edit icon apperaing for the placeholder. I cliked on edit icon and I see the below error message
==========================================================================================
Error
Unable to perform the action due to the following reasons:
[+] The Region Definition could not be loaded. The required parameter 'regionDefinition' could not be found.

What could be the problem? Ithere anything more needed to be done here?
Regards,
PratapHi Pratap,
Double click on the placeholder that is on you template page
Click on the check box optionally specify place holder definition

I saved as template , and created one editable region in the content area
I have four pages from the template; the index, services, products and services. Now if i want to create a sidebar for the services page only. How do I do that without the template updating to all the pages. I just need the service page with the sidebar.
Your contribution is greatly appreciated.Create a #Sidebar style in your external CSS and a place for it in your main Template.dwt.
On child pages where you don't want the #Sidebar to appear, embed a page specific CSS rule like this:
<style type="text/css">
/**PAGE SPECIFIC STYLES GO HERE**/
#sidebar {display:none}
</style>

Can't manually add editable regions to head in template
When I created my main template in Dreamweaver CS6 for my website, I had copied most of the page code from another layout I already had, including the head code. I did not realize there were already editable regions built into the head section of the Dreamweaver template and deleted them when I pasted my previous code without adding new ones. I then added an editable region to the body and started created pages using the template.
Everything works well and updates properly when I make changes to the template but now that I am trying to add those editable regions back to the head section so I can change the page title (and possibly add more responsive code), it doesn't work. I copied and pasted the following code into my template file in Dreamweaver and it saves in the template telling me it's updating the related pages, but when I open those individual pages in Dreamweaver, the code isn't there and those regions are not editable; only the original editable region I created in the body exists and works properly. Everything else continues to work perfectly.
Here is the code I pasted into the head around the <title> tag:
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="doctitle" -->
<title>Collings Document Database</title>
<!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
And here is the code I pasted into the head just before the </head> tag:
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="head" -->
<!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
</head>
Any help would be appreciated. From everything I've read on these forums after searching, it sounds like pasting that code should work but I continue to get the results mentioned. Thank you.Thanks for the response. I've run the template code through the validator and the following two errors are the only ones that showed up. I don't see how either of these would cause this issue. Thoughts?

Error adding editable region in nested template Header
I have a base template for the website (establishing basic
menus), and a secondary template using that base template, which
establishes a common table layout for one part of the site. Having
created the PHP to drive the page, I need to lock down that
secondary nested region - otherwise any edit I make to my secondary
"table-defining" template is not passed through
to the final pages using the secondary template. I have
successfully created a secondary editable region in each part of
the <body> area, and sure enough, it locks down text
outside the secondary editable region just as DW help says it
should. So far so good.
Now the problem - I cannot create a region inside the
<head> editable region to lock down that region too.
Normally one would want keywords and so on to be variable from page
to page, but as I am filling variable keywords from a database, it
makes sense to lock down the <head> too. Does anyone
know why that generates an error "cannot create an
optional region here"? Is there anything that can be done
about it?Posts are hard to read when they are all crammed together
like yours. Try
making some paragraphs!
Nevertheless, I think I understand what you are saying., but
honestly, I
just wouldn't do it that way. Anymore, my templates are just
one editable
region in the body, and a bunch of server-side includes. I
find nested
templates much too complex, and troublesome to work with, and
have really
never found a scenario where I could do things with them that
I could not do
more easily with other methods.

Is it only you working on the site? Who are you trying to
'lock down'? If
it's only you, I'd forget about this. Invariably the things
like this that
you think are a good idea come back later to bite you.

Is it possible to make the body tag of a template editable?
I'm having diffuculty with making the body tag an editable region in the template.
I need to add some onload stuff to a body tag on a page derived from a template. I am not sure if this is possible.
And if it isn't does anyone know a workaround?
ThanksNever Mind I found this.

Adding text to editable region creates space in the rest of my layout
I created my layout in PS, sliced the images and then imported to DW (html and images).
Layout looks great.
I created editable regions in the template I created from the .html
One I start inserting text into these regions, my container moves and it throws the rest of the layout off by adding space between the editable region and the area above it (a big black line horizontally through the page).
Is there a way to keep the container/editable region from moving or growing with the text so that it doesn't change my layout?
On a side note, this change doesn't appear in live view. When I preview in browser, Safari layout looks great, but text doesn't appear. In firefox, text appears, but layout is a mess.
Here is the code from the editable region to which I am trying to add text:
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="main_content_area" -->
<div id="site_layout_contentmain">Content for id "site_layout_contentmain" Goes Here</div>
<!-- TemplateEndEditable --></td>
ANY help is GREATLY appreciated!!!!!MHarvey2001 wrote:
Yes, the design is appearing to pull apart when I add content, but only in the Firefox preview.
If it pulls apart in Firefox, chances are it pulls apart in all browsers when text size is increased.
The problem with Photoshop code is that it is a) rigid, b) unstable and c) invalid.
To illustrate, run your code through the on-line validation tools below.
CSS - http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/
HTML - http://validator.w3.org/
Photoshop is OK for designing quick comps to show the client but they won't hold up on a real site.
IMO, the benefits of starting over far outweigh the inconvenience.

After inserting editable regions, DW CS3 tells me none exist...?
I am having muliple problems with templates on this particular project, that I have never seen before. I was going to break them into multiple
questions, per the instructions here at the forum, but all of these relate to the same template code, which I will post below, so I think it would be
more efficient to include the related questions in this thread.
Background
I created this template by first scraping the client's existing site, which is a dynamic CMS site, with HTTrack. Secondly, I opened the HTML file generated by that processs, and saved it as a template in my DW project, which automatically assigned it to the "Templates" folder, and is accessable via the "Assets" panel (usual stuff.)
The reason for starting with a scraped version of existing is that this project involves moving the site off of the CMS platform and into HTML/CMS, yet preserving essentially the same design.
1. The most obvious problem I have is that in the subject line: after adding a couple of editable regions to my template,
when I save/preview, an error message comes up saying "your template has no editable regions, do you want to proceed?"
2. In doing the save as template operation, I am prompted with "Update links?" and I do. When I open the template, all looks good in DW, however as soon as I do a preview, I get a completely raw html page with NO css styling, no images, no fonts, etc. Conversely, if I do the same step, yet choose not to update links when prompted, then I get a template that looks completely bare in DW (no styling, no images, etc.) yet looks fine when previewed...?
Additionally, one other thing I tried was doing the save as template, choosing not to update links, and then moving it out of the templates folder into the main project folder - Here, it both looks fine in DW, and previews, yet I am unable to use it as a template (does not appear in assets, cannot use "create new from" or "apply", etc.)
I have also tried changing from "site root" to "document" in terms of linking, yet nothing has worked. Every time I have created a template on other projects, all has just worked fine from the start, so I am really stumped here.
The project will have too many pages to not use a template for updates, so I am hopeful that I can figure out what is causing this. Following is my template code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

</html>There are (or can be), of course, editable regions in the head of a document. Typically, around the <title></title> you will find 'space' to put links etc, and meta tags:
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="doctitle" -->
<title> Your title here </title>
<meta name="description" content="Description here." />
<meta name="keywords" content="keywords here " />
<meta name="robots" content="index,follow" />
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
Further down in this same document, I find:
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="head" -->
<link href="styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<style type="text/css">
<!--
.style4 {color: #FFFFFF}
-->
</style>
<script src="../Scripts/swfobject_modified.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
showing a stylesheet link and an embedded style.
So it's not so much that you can't have editable areas in the head of the document, it's more that you can't overlap or improperly nest ANYTHING.
You can also (am I repeating myself?) make a tag's attributes editable. I use that feature most notably for applying different IDs to <body> tags for different neighborhoods in my sites. By applying different body IDs, I can control more specifically elements on those pages. But that's a conversation for another time!
Best,
Beth -
Why does this happen when I insert editable region?
Hi ppl... I got a small problem here. When I insert editing region into the ORANGEBOX div, for some unknown reason which I can't figure out, my spry menu bar shifts to the left. But in preview, it looks fine. What's the reason for this and how can I avoid it? The shifted spry menu bar in the workspace is disturbing me.. haha.. I have attached screenshots of the 2 states below (Before inserting editable region and after inserting editable region)
Before inserting editable region into the ORANGE BOX
After inserting editable region into the ORANGEBOX
Here's the code BEFORE inserting editable region.. If you are free, do try to insert an editable region into the ORANGEBOX, and kindly tell me why it's happening! =) Thanks!
