Editable Regions in Dreamweaver?

Hello, I have a bit of a dilemma in Dreamweaver right now,
and was wondering if anyone may know of a potential solution. I'll
try to be as clear and understandable as possible.
When I go to build a webpage layout in Photoshop for
importing in to Dreamweaver, once I use the slice tool to prepare
my page for output, my page is turned into images. I have no
problem with this, except for when I need to place certain editable
elements (such as text, for example), over them inside of
Dreamweaver, which is where it becomes a problem.
My question is, how would one go about creating these
"backgrounds" (is that what they are called?) in a fashion that
allows content to be placed there, without Dreamweaver treating it
as an image and therefore resulting in the disability to place
content there?
I hope somebody is able to understand this and will be able
to help me out.. thanks in advance! =)

    Or does other client or serverside programs make use of this?
    Thanks

    Are you sure it uses DMX-level template markup? I'd be

  • Dreamweaver does not allow me to edit the editable region

    Oh my, I'm so desperate in this, I have a .dwt and have set up the editable region as well. When I want to make a new html file from the said template dreamweaver does not allow me to edit it. I mean, all the code is completely grayed out as if the template itself is locked by default.
    What I want to do is to create several new pages such as new albums, charts, genres, contacts (which all based on the home template) The home template itself has slider in its body. For the new html files I'm about to create (which I'm so desperate why I can't do so) I want the header and footer to remain the same.
    Here is an image of my index.dwt (my homepage) anything inside the red frame is what I want to edit for new albums, charts, genres, contacts, login page, etc. The top part is the header and the bottom one is the footer (Excuse the right image, I'm working on dual screen)
    Any help will be appreciated!
    Sorry for my english

    Hello SeptianNugraha,
    here some hints concerning while handling templates (I quote):
    The main principle of DW Templates is:
    Non-editable regions = propagate to all child pages. The content of non-edtable regions is identical on all child pages. When you edit a non-editable region, DW propagates all changes to all child pages.
    Editable regions = do not propagate because they're unique to every child page. The whole idea of editable regions is that they contain page specific content which does not appear on any other child page.
    And:
    PART 1
    1. Create a prototype page with all the sitewide elements (common header, footer, sidebar, etc..) that you will need for your entire project. This requires some careful pre-planning even for small web sites.
    2. Validate your code & test this prototype page in all major browsers. 3. When you're completely satisfied with your layout, SaveAs Template. DW will save this as a .dwt file in a site folder called Templates.
    4. DW will ask you to add Editable Regions for stuff that will change from page to page. Do this and SAVE.
    5. Close your Template.dwt file.
    PART 2
    1. File > New Page > from Template.  Select the template you wish to use.  Hit OK.
    2. This is a child page.  You can only edit content within editable regions.  Everything else is locked.
    3. SaveAs index.html (your home page) to the root in your local site folder.
    PART 3
    Repeat PART 2 for each additional page required.
    PART 4
    1. Open your main TEMPLATE file and add a navigation menu with links to your site pages.2. SAVE.3. DW will ask if you want to populate changes to child pages.  Hit yes.
    4. Publish all site pages to your server.
    PART 5
    If you should ever need to edit your TEMPLATE .dwt file, Repeat PART 4.
    Good luck!

  • Dreamweaver Template: circle with diagonal line in editable region, but can still edit

    Since upgrading to Dreamweaver CC 2014, for only one of dozens of clients, in a Template, I get a circle with diagonal line in editable region, but I can still edit it, I just can't click to the spot that I want to edit, I have to navigate there with the up down left and right arrows on my keyboard. And, I created a new Template and it didn't happen, until I "got" a file, and now it happens in the new Template too. What's going on?

    Sorry, I'm new here. Do you mean like a screen shot? I just thought maybe somebody had seen this before and would just tell me "you need to uncheck the something or other"

  • Dreamweaver Template Editable Region Old Problem

    Hello,
    Please, I need urgent help regarding the Adobe Dreamweaver
    CS3 program for Mac OS X. It is, unfortunately, driving me crazy,
    because I have now a problem that is not letting me edit any
    editable region in the child pages I create and apply the template
    to that page. I have tried to restart the computer, restart
    Dreamweaver and even reinstalled Dreamweaver and made my Template
    from scratch and nothing worked. The problem keeps there and
    doesn't let me edit any editable region.
    Here is what happens: I have created a Editable Region called
    "Page Content". Also, another 2 editable regions called "Section
    Navigation" and "Sub Navigation". These editable regions are just
    there to make my job easier. In the Page Content part, I put the
    content I want to add to that page, like text and a heading. For
    the Navigations, I simply change the class of one list item to
    "current", so that my CSS rule can be applied to that list item and
    change the font, so that the users can tell in what page they are
    now, you get it?
    So, what happens? Everytime I try to make changes to the
    editable region Dreamweaver prompts this message:
    "You have made changes in the code in a region that is not
    marked as an Editable Region... You will lose all of your changes
    in the next update of your template. Do you want to retain all of
    the changes?"
    But IT IS A EDITABLE Region, so that is why I dont get it.
    And it gets even worse, because after I lose all of my changes and
    hours of work are wasted.
    I hope you guys, experts in Dreamweaver can make my life a
    lot easier by helping me solve this issue,
    Please help.
    Best regards,
    Thank you for reading this and for the help in advance,
    GB

    And, by the way, such messages are usually triggered by
    improper code usages
    on the page - that's why we need to see your code.

  • Dreamweaver template giving up "instancebegineditable tag inside editable region" error

    I have been searching the internet and any forum I can find relating to Dreamweaver and find it has been a comman problem for a lot of people but the solutions they got have not helped me. I created a template by following steps via a helpvid.net tutorial and the site looked very good for being basic enough but since last night when I try save the template it gives up the error "there is an error at line 8, column 47 (absolute position 789) of "file address": InstanceBeginEditable tag inside editable region." Now from what I have read on the forums it usually means there is a mispelling or something placed inside the region when it shouldn't be but there is only 50 odd lines on it and can't see any problem. When I view the files it gives the error about, there are duplications of the "begin editable region" a number of times but they shouldn't be there because they aren't on the template. Im also finding that before this error came up the pages looked fine when uploaded but now the footer height which was set to 20px is 200px when uploaded and I have checked all coding for it and checked the Divs but still see no error. I have uploaded my tempalete and some of the pages that its giving errors about to see if that helps, not sure if its best to just paste wall of coding so ill post links to the files and if code needs to be pasted here ill do so. http://dublinmoulding.com/ <- site im working on, it can be seen the footer is very big. Should be 20px height but inspect element shows its 200px - #wrapper #footer {     color: #FFF;     height: 200px; On the template it is #wrapper #footer {     color: #FFF;     text-align: center;     margin: 0px;     font-size: 18px;     font-style: normal;     font-weight: lighter;     font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;     padding-top: 5px;     padding-right: 0px;     padding-bottom: 5px;     padding-left: 0px;     height: 20px; http://dublinmoulding.com/dreamweaver/temp1.dwt <- my tempalate The error is given up on every page created using the template
    **Update**  I edited the file names of some of the pages that I used the template on so now it shows the coding.
    http://dublinmoulding.com/dreamweaver/index.html6  <- my index page
    http://dublinmoulding.com/dreamweaver/about.html6 <-about page

    No need for tricks.  We can view source code directly from our browsers or with Inspect Element.
    Like I said, I don't see any code errors in your Template or child pages.
    If DW continues to display errors,  the first thing to try is Deleting Corrupted Cache in DW

  • Dreamweaver editable regions isn't accessible.

    I'm currently creating a webpage in Dreamweaver CS4, and have run into trouble while attempting to create editable regions in the template I created. When I select the regions i want to be editable, click on insert and template options, the option for editable regions isn't avalible, it's grayed out. Can anyone tell me why this is and how i can repair it?

    The only explanation I can think of is that your code contains errors or you're attempting to put a Template Editable Region inside another Template Editable Region which isn't allowed.

  • Problem with editing Editable Region - HELP!

    My website is www.yucholian.com
    I have created a template and have assigned a main body to be

    The more you know about HTML, the less you will run into such
    things - but I
    have to say, I have no idea what you are describing here. It
    sounds to me
    like user error, but I can't say for sure.
    > However, I can't seem to use different fonts, sizes or

    Show me your template, tell me what you are trying to change,
    and I'll
    explain to you what is happening.

  • An editable region, how to keep text formatting?

    Hello fellas.
    Is there any way to keep the text formatting when I paste it
    into my edible region of the template?
    Every time I attempt it - dreamweaver gives me message "
    making this change would require code change which is locked by a
    template". The only way to paste anything into a region is by
    turning off any copy/paste text formatting completely, which is
    painful to edit, especially with a large number of articles.
    Would greatly appreciate any help.

    This is a common alert when the page you are working on
    contains *any*
    coding anomalies (perhaps in a location other than the
    editable region).
    Does the page validate before the paste? Does the code you
    are pasting
    validate?
    The answer is, of course, it's possible to retain formatting
    (provided all
    code is valid). What app are you pasting from?

  • Editable region but not in code view

    EDIT: While cooking dinner I thought that the computer "fixes" itself when it reboots what about Dreamweaver?  I closed DW down.  Reopened the app and voila.  I CAN edit that section in code view now.  It's weird but it appears to be working.  I'll repost if something is amiss again regarding this issue.  I'll leave the post up in case it's helpful to anyone else.  thanks.
    I have new pages made from a template.  I can only edit in design view NOT in code view.  I get the standard error of I'm trying to edit where I'm not allowed.  I've made templates many times but never had this problem (I don't think!).  Does someone have a tip or help for me?  In addition to this issue I was not able to change the title of the page until I added the editable region in the template for title line.  That's always been default editable before.  Thanks a lot. I'm using DW8.
    begining code from template:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="title" --><title>Party Invitation Boutique</title>  <!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
    begining code from new pages:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/index.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="title" --><title>Baby Blue</title>  <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
    -------------then further down on the page is the editable region-------------
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="main_content" -->
    <div id="content_right">test only can type in design view. can't add div boxes
      even in this editable region. ugh. can't even type next this this text in the
      code view. </div>
    <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->

    Best thing you can do in the future is run your code through the validator if the editable region exists:
    http://validator.w3.org/
    If there are code errors with other tags on the page then it is possible DW is overlooking its own template code.  Unfortunately without seeing the whole page I cannot say this is definitely the case, but a likely possibility.

  • Modifying a template resulted in all child pages with repeating editable regions - Help !

    Good morning,
    I have recently been appointed to update a website designed in Dreamweaver by an employee who is no longer here. I have read books on the software and practiced an insane amount which permitted me to update child pages, links, documents etc... however:
    I was asked to add a new button to an "non-editable" region of a template. Trying to do so resulted in a massive mess (with massive anxiety).
    Even thou the new template had all the same text and editable regions, all my pages look completely different from the template itself. The editable regions appears 2-3 times in different locations ex: Header is showed on the bottom, top etc... and the Editable region titles (EditableRegion1 etc...) repeat themselves as well.
    I really need help and not sure what to do, I have tried everything and I am only making it worse and worse. All I want/need is for all my html pages created with this template, match the template.
    Please note that this site is local, not online.
    Since I noticed on other threads that the code is needed; here it is:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

    body  {
    font: 100% Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    background: #666666;
    margin: 0; /* it's good practice to zero the margin and padding of the body element to account for differing browser defaults */
    padding: 0;
    text-align: center; /* this centers the container in IE 5* browsers. The text is then set to the left aligned default in the #container selector */
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #D7D7D7;
    background-repeat: repeat-x;

    /* Tips for Elastic layouts
    1. Since the elastic layouts overall sizing is based on the user's default fonts size, they are more unpredictable. Used correctly, they are also more accessible for those that need larger fonts size since the line length remains proportionate.
    2. Sizing of divs in this layout are based on the 100% font size in the body element. If you decrease the text size overall by using a font-size: 80% on the body element or the #container, remember that the entire layout will downsize proportionately. You may want to increase the widths of the various divs to compensate for this.
    3. If font sizing is changed in differing amounts on each div instead of on the overall design (ie: #sidebar1 is given a 70% font size and #mainContent is given an 85% font size), this will proportionately change each of the divs overall size. You may want to adjust based on your final font sizing.
    .twoColElsLtHdr #container {
    width: 46em;  /* this width will create a container that will fit in an 800px browser window if text is left at browser default font sizes */
    background: #FFFFFF;
    margin: 0 auto; /* the auto margins (in conjunction with a width) center the page */
    border: 30px none #C4C4C4;
    text-align: left; /* this overrides the text-align: center on the body element. */
    padding-left: 10px;
    background-color: #FFF;
    border-top-color: #C4C4C4;
    border-right-color: #C4C4C4;
    border-bottom-color: #C4C4C4;

    border-left-style: outset;
    border-top-width: thick;
    border-right-style: outset;
    border-top-style: outset;
    border-left-color: #C4C4C4;
    border-right-width: thick;
    border-bottom-width: thick;
    border-left-width: thick;
    .twoColElsLtHdr #header {
    padding: 0 10px;  /* this padding matches the left alignment of the elements in the divs that appear beneath it. If an image is used in the #header instead of text, you may want to remove the padding. */
    background-color: #FFF;
    .twoColElsLtHdr #header h1 {
    margin: 0; /* zeroing the margin of the last element in the #header div will avoid margin collapse - an unexplainable space between divs. If the div has a border around it, this is not necessary as that also avoids the margin collapse */
    padding: 10px 0; /* using padding instead of margin will allow you to keep the element away from the edges of the div */
    /* Tips for sidebar1:
    1. Be aware that if you set a font-size value on this div, the overall width of the div will be adjusted accordingly.
    2. Since we are working in ems, it's best not to use padding on the sidebar itself. It will be added to the width for standards compliant browsers creating an unknown actual width.
    3. Space between the side of the div and the elements within it can be created by placing a left and right margin on those elements as seen in the ".twoColElsLtHdr #sidebar1 p" rule.
    .twoColElsLtHdr #sidebar1 {
    float: left;
    width: 12em; /* the background color will be displayed for the length of the content in the column, but no further */
    padding: 15px 0; /* top and bottom padding create visual space within this div */
    background-color: #066;
    background-repeat: repeat-x;
    border-top-width: thin;
    border-top-style: none;
    border-right-style: none;
    border-bottom-style: none;
    border-left-style: none;
    border-right-width: thin;
    border-bottom-width: thin;
    border-left-width: thin;
    color: #FFF;
    padding-left: 0px;
    clear: left;
    .twoColElsLtHdr #sidebar1 h3, .twoColElsLtHdr #sidebar1 p {
    margin-left: 10px; /* the left and right margin should be given to every element that will be placed in the side columns */
    margin-right: 10px;
    background-color: #066;
    text-decoration: inherit;
    /* Tips for mainContent:
    1. If you give this #mainContent div a font-size value different than the #sidebar1 div, the margins of the #mainContent div will be based on its font-size and the width of the #sidebar1 div will be based on its font-size. You may wish to adjust the values of these divs.
    2. The space between the mainContent and sidebar1 is created with the left margin on the mainContent div.  No matter how much content the sidebar1 div contains, the column space will remain. You can remove this left margin if you want the #mainContent div's text to fill the #sidebar1 space when the content in #sidebar1 ends.
    3. To avoid float drop, you may need to test to determine the approximate maximum image/element size since this layout is based on the user's font sizing combined with the values you set. However, if the user has their browser font size set lower than normal, less space will be available in the #mainContent div than you may see on testing.
    4. In the Internet Explorer Conditional Comment below, the zoom property is used to give the mainContent "hasLayout." This avoids several IE-specific bugs that may occur.
    .twoColElsLtHdr #mainContent {
    margin: 0 1.5em 0 13em; /* the right margin can be given in ems or pixels. It creates the space down the right side of the page. */

    I am not suprised, the previous employee tried to recreate the English version of the site in another folder structure and did not change all links and was still using a template in the wrong location.
    I think I created the mess by trying to modify the existing template's non-editable region in order to add a new button. When trying to update all the pages, the fiasco started.
    Do you think the best option would be to create a new template in the correct folder structure and apply it? Would it fix the current pages or will I have to fix them all manualy on by one?
    I understand it is difficult to deal with a newbie of my magnitude and thanks again.

  • I can't make an editable template in dreamweaver CS5 help!

    Here is my problem. I insert an editable region, and that works just fine. However, when trying to create a page from this template, I can't edit the CSS. Normally, I click the area of the CSS I want to edit, and go to modify>templates>make attribute editable. When I create a page, nothing is editable. I'm lost.
    Here is the code I'm using so far: (I have not added a 'make attribute editable' in this code yet)  Thanks!

  • How to insert a widget in a editable region from a template

    Hi there,
    ok so basically I am trying to create a HTML page from a template i have already designed.
    when I try to insert a widget (Lightbox Gallery) in the editable region I get the following error.
    "the widget requires code that must be inserted into the head of the document. insertion cannot happen because this document is read only"
    I saw a previous thread (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/901299) that had the same problem with a solution but cant seem to make sense of it.
    Not exactly sure where and what to paste in the header of the HTML page.
    Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Murray,
    ha funny you would say that is the exact answer you would give me seeing you posted it
    I understand the logic behind it though not sure what i need to copy and where.
    Basically i craeted a "dummy page" and inserted the widget-no problem there.
    next step- what code do i copy from the dummy page and where do i paste it? in the template or HTML page.
    Dummy HTML with widget code

  • Templates in DW CS5.5 and editable regions

    I have a template page that has an editable region defined as follows:
    <div class="sidebar1">
        <nav>
          <ul>
            <li><a href="#">Home</a></li>
            <li><a href="#"></a></li>
            <li><a href="#"></a></li>
            <li><a href="#"></a></li>
            <li><a href="#">Members Only</a></li>
            <li><a href="#"> Gallery</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">Constitution</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">Links</a></li>
          </ul>
        </nav>
        <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="all" -->
    </div>
          <!-- end .sidebar1 -->
      <article class="content">
        <h1>BCEF Clubs</h1>
        <section>
    other code goes here
    </section>
    <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
    Note the </div> tag  after the start of the editable region. This is a proper tag, as it is needed to close the sidebar1 div.
    When it is not in an editable region, the </div> does not show up in yellow in design veiw and it works in every repect.
    When the editable region is introduced, the </div> shows yellow in design view, and it works in every respect.
    It validates using the W3C validation page.
    Pages built with it also show the tag as yellow but they do not display it when live or in a browser.
    If I delete the </div> as dreamweaver suggests, the css breaks and the page will not work.
    It seems that DW thinks that this is an illegal tag. If I click my mouse on the <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="all" --> tag, and collapse the tag, all the code in the editable region + that in the sidebare 1 div, ( even that before the editable region begins) collapses. The editable region does not allow edits in the sidebar1 code outside the region.
    I need to put the editable region within part of the sidebar 1 div so that I can add aditional floated items in the sidebar 1 div if needed later.
    Is this a bug or am I missing something?

    This would make more sense.
    </nav>
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="sidebar1" -->
    <p>Some unique sidebar1 content goes here</p>
    <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
    </div><!-- end .sidebar1 -->
    <article class="content">
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="content" -->
    <h1>Unique heading here</h1>
    <section>
    other code
    </section>
    <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
    </div> <!--end .content-->
