Editable Regions Problem in CS3
I am working a set of pages based on the two column fixed with template.
4 Editable Regions.

Doc Title

Ad Area
Almost ALL of my additions are going into the Content Region. 80% of the time I have NO ISSUES
between Code View and Design View.
What is happing to me too many times now that it has become annoying......
I will make a simple code change in Code View, usually WELL WITHIN the editable region tags
and when I go to view what I did in Design View, I get an error box that says something like this.
You have made a code change in an area that is designated as uneditable.
If you wish to keep this change it will be lost the next time you update the template.
This could be a siple change like adding a bold to a piece of text.
A lot of times it happens whe I try to put a Container Div around some text.
It almost ALWAYS happens when I am trying to float something.
Is this a BUG. Is there a fix? I know I can't ignore it because I have seen what happens when I do that....
Please don't tell me to update to a more recent version unless that absolutely has the fix in it.
It cost me an arm to buy this product in the first place and if I had known how little I was gaining
I would have NEVER purchased it.I certainly don't want to spend any more unless it solves the issue.
The design view in CS3 STINKS! Design View was one of the reasons
I wanted the product in the first place. WYSIWYG. I was trying to upgrade away from years of using HotDog.
Two years of this now and I still find myself doing most of my design in Code View.
I don't TRUST Design View.
I do eventually publish to a copy without template marup but I need to code in the version that is still templated.
I do change the master template from time to time.
HELP!
Better than your helpless nagging would be that you share a link to your page.
... and your: Please don't tell me to update to a more recent version unless that absolutely has the fix in it. It's actually also not a very good attitude and (for me!) not a great motivation to help you. Ok, I have this program on the computer, even, but the reasons are to work here in the forum.
... and I quote from a thread here in the forum:
"It's not a word processor or WYSIWYG, never has been, but I think you're using those terms more broadly than the regulars in this forum use them. But if you're happy to use only Design View and let DW code then you'll get similar results to using DW8."

Editing editable regions problem
I am editing a template derived editable region. Sometimes
when I go to save I get a message: "you are editing a NON editable
region. This will be overwritten when the next template update is
done. Do you want to keep the changes for now" or words to that
effect. When I say yes it immediately deletes the changes leaving
me back where I started. If I follow a particular sequence (which I
have not memorised yet!) the problem goes away showing that inded
my action is correct. Clearly something is screwed up here. Has
anyone any clues or a solution?In every case I have examined, this message is a red herring,
and likely has
nothing to do with editable regions, or maybe even the
changes you have just
made. But it *does* have something to do with content on the
page somewhere
that makes DW puke when it tries to update from the template
engine. Can
you show me a page where you get this error, and tell me what
you have just
done to trigger it, please?

Template - editable region problem
Hi folks,
I'm designing a site using CSS as opposed to tables and I've
hit on a problem. For info the site is broken down into a 'header',
'left hand column' and a 'right hand column'. The 'left hand
column' is a class and on the template I'm trying to make it an
editable region, However when I've down editable regions in tables
in the past they're always worked but this time out when attempting
to make the left hand column editable the following message is
displayed:
You have placed the editable region "EditColumn" inside a block
tag. Users of this template will not be able to create new blocks
in this region. Move the region outside the block tag if you want
users to be able to do this. Now I'm not sure what I'm doing
wrong, however it is within this region I want to be able to edit
data. I want to be able to apply a Bg image to this region and also
add images or text and links - however I cant.
I have tried to edit the above on a separate DW8 file and it
works fine (which it should do) - it's just in the template version
I cant. Can anyone shed any light on this problem. I'm not a
hardcore coder so any breakdown in this problem would be absolutley
welcomed.
Many thanks
TommisauceI note that you have used the space bar as a layout tool (not
a great idea).
<a
href="#">ADVERTISEMENT</a>
I also note that you continue to make the error of improperly
nesting tags -
<p align="left"><img
src="../image/Front_Page/IUKwebLogo.gif"
alt="Intuition
UK: Business Consultants" width="245" height="60"
class="Logo" /><div
class="MenuHeader">
Note that this is a <div> inside a <p> and that's
not a valid structure.
You also have things like this -
<p><p class="Copyright">Intuition UK
2007©</p>
an improperly terminated <p> tag.
Until you get a better grasp of HTML, you should probably
stay out of the
code.
The bottom line is this - DW will only do what you tell it to
do. If you
tell it to do something that will result in invalid markup,
DW will not
always prevent you from completing that task. If there is
invalid markup on
a template page, you will always trigger these alerts that
you are getting.

DW CS3 Remove editable regions
Hi
How does one go about removing an editable region in DW CS3?Thanks David...it was rather a simple issue but for whatever reason my mind wasn't working and this had me stumped.
I have another template based question on the forum, once I get past this last issue, I think my troubles will be behind me. If you have time, please have a look.
Cheers!

Dreamweaver Template Editable Region Old Problem
Hello,
Please, I need urgent help regarding the Adobe Dreamweaver
CS3 program for Mac OS X. It is, unfortunately, driving me crazy,
because I have now a problem that is not letting me edit any
editable region in the child pages I create and apply the template
to that page. I have tried to restart the computer, restart
Dreamweaver and even reinstalled Dreamweaver and made my Template
from scratch and nothing worked. The problem keeps there and
doesn't let me edit any editable region.
Here is what happens: I have created a Editable Region called
"Page Content". Also, another 2 editable regions called "Section
Navigation" and "Sub Navigation". These editable regions are just
there to make my job easier. In the Page Content part, I put the
content I want to add to that page, like text and a heading. For
the Navigations, I simply change the class of one list item to
"current", so that my CSS rule can be applied to that list item and
change the font, so that the users can tell in what page they are
now, you get it?
So, what happens? Everytime I try to make changes to the
editable region Dreamweaver prompts this message:
"You have made changes in the code in a region that is not
marked as an Editable Region... You will lose all of your changes
in the next update of your template. Do you want to retain all of
the changes?"
But IT IS A EDITABLE Region, so that is why I dont get it.
And it gets even worse, because after I lose all of my changes and
hours of work are wasted.
I hope you guys, experts in Dreamweaver can make my life a
lot easier by helping me solve this issue,
Please help.
Best regards,
Thank you for reading this and for the help in advance,
GBAnd, by the way, such messages are usually triggered by
improper code usages
on the page - that's why we need to see your code.

After inserting editable regions, DW CS3 tells me none exist...?
I am having muliple problems with templates on this particular project, that I have never seen before. I was going to break them into multiple
questions, per the instructions here at the forum, but all of these relate to the same template code, which I will post below, so I think it would be
more efficient to include the related questions in this thread.
Background
I created this template by first scraping the client's existing site, which is a dynamic CMS site, with HTTrack. Secondly, I opened the HTML file generated by that processs, and saved it as a template in my DW project, which automatically assigned it to the "Templates" folder, and is accessable via the "Assets" panel (usual stuff.)
The reason for starting with a scraped version of existing is that this project involves moving the site off of the CMS platform and into HTML/CMS, yet preserving essentially the same design.
1. The most obvious problem I have is that in the subject line: after adding a couple of editable regions to my template,
when I save/preview, an error message comes up saying "your template has no editable regions, do you want to proceed?"
2. In doing the save as template operation, I am prompted with "Update links?" and I do. When I open the template, all looks good in DW, however as soon as I do a preview, I get a completely raw html page with NO css styling, no images, no fonts, etc. Conversely, if I do the same step, yet choose not to update links when prompted, then I get a template that looks completely bare in DW (no styling, no images, etc.) yet looks fine when previewed...?
Additionally, one other thing I tried was doing the save as template, choosing not to update links, and then moving it out of the templates folder into the main project folder - Here, it both looks fine in DW, and previews, yet I am unable to use it as a template (does not appear in assets, cannot use "create new from" or "apply", etc.)
I have also tried changing from "site root" to "document" in terms of linking, yet nothing has worked. Every time I have created a template on other projects, all has just worked fine from the start, so I am really stumped here.
The project will have too many pages to not use a template for updates, so I am hopeful that I can figure out what is causing this. Following is my template code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

</html>There are (or can be), of course, editable regions in the head of a document. Typically, around the <title></title> you will find 'space' to put links etc, and meta tags:
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="doctitle" -->
<title> Your title here </title>
<meta name="description" content="Description here." />
<meta name="keywords" content="keywords here " />
<meta name="robots" content="index,follow" />
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
Further down in this same document, I find:
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="head" -->
<link href="styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<style type="text/css">
<!--
.style4 {color: #FFFFFF}
-->
</style>
<script src="../Scripts/swfobject_modified.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
showing a stylesheet link and an embedded style.
So it's not so much that you can't have editable areas in the head of the document, it's more that you can't overlap or improperly nest ANYTHING.
You can also (am I repeating myself?) make a tag's attributes editable. I use that feature most notably for applying different IDs to <body> tags for different neighborhoods in my sites. By applying different body IDs, I can control more specifically elements on those pages. But that's a conversation for another time!

Editable Regions and Templates -- Problem in IE
Hello,
I have a template that I use throughout my site. The template
includes
the Spry Menu Bar and three editable regions. The pages all
look great
in Firefox. But in IE6 and IE7, there is a problem--white
space
vanishes and the text is too close to the objects above it.
Specifically, The <h3>Page
Title</h3>appears to close underneath
<td><!-- TemplateBeginEditable
name="EditRegion1" -->. It's fine in
Firefox, however.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
=====================
Here's the code.
<style type="text/css">
<!--
body {
background-color: #878737;
-->
</style>
</head>
<body text="#333333"
vlink="#333333" alink="#333333"
leftmargin="0"
topmargin="0"
marginwidth="0"
marginheight="0">
<TABLE width="800" border=0
align="center" cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0
bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<TBODY>
<tr>
<td
width="2%">&nbsp;</td>
<td width="96%"><img
src="../SpryAssets/mainnav_logo.jpg"
/></td>
<td
width="2%">&nbsp;</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>&nbsp;</td>
<td><!-- TemplateBeginEditable
name="EditRegion1" -->
<h3>Page Title</h3>
<!-- TemplateEndEditable
--></td>TEST BED:
I shrinked my test site to just 1 photo page with only 3 pictures and I I published it to a folder:
Safari 3.1.1 has no problems
Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.2 has no problems
Opera 9.5 has no problems
IE 7.0.5730.13 cannot render any picture !!!!
DEEP DIVE:
IE fails and if "notifications" are turned on complains about run time error "Error: Access Denied" on line 504 of a script. I went deeper and using the Microsoft Just in Time Debugging features apparently the offending javascript is "iWeb - iWebSite.js" with an ajaxRequest called "req.open('GET',url,true)"
iWEB on LEOPARD is no better
I booted with an external disk using Leopard and I used iWeb just 1 photos page
no way IE still complains (so far I am using Mac Tiger level)
HOW CAN YOU HELP
To those of you who succeeded with iWeb+IE (and have time to lend) I can send the zipped 2MB actual iWeb "package" named "Domain.site2" used by my iWeb to save the site under editing before any publishing.
you temporarily rename your "Domain.site2" + substitute it with my "Domain.site2" + start iWeb and see if you can publish/see it correctly.
Please send me a private mail if you think you can help.
Seriously thinking of dumping iWeb...

ACROBAT CS3 EDITING CONTENT PROBLEM
When I click on an object with the TOUCH UP OBJECT TOOL in an Acrobat file and right click and EDIT IMAGE it opens Photoshop for bitmaps and Illustrater for vector graphics as it used to in CS2, however when I have finished editing the object and close the window in Photoshop or Illustrater it asks me to save the altered image back to the hard disk not to update the image in Acrobat as it did in CS2. This makes it impossible to edit any of the content of a PDF in a seperate program without alot of hassle. I have searched the menus and preferances but cannot find any settings to alter to get it to work.
Is there something I am missing or is it a problem with CS3?This means that a necessary Photoshop plug-in (perhaps Illustrator
too) has gone missing. Try Repair from the Help menu in Acrobat.

Problem with editing Editable Region - HELP!
My website is www.yucholian.com
I have created a template and have assigned a main body to be
an Editable Region. However, I can't seem to use different fonts,
sizes or styles as I wish. If I go to Text drop down, go to size,
all options are greyed out. Can anyone help?
BTW, I'm using 30 day trial.
I find Dreamweaver to be very finicky. Even something simple
as applying a template that I created, view doesn't update, showing
doubles...
Thanks in advance.> I find Dreamweaver to be very finicky. Even something

The more you know about HTML, the less you will run into such
things - but I
have to say, I have no idea what you are describing here. It
sounds to me
like user error, but I can't say for sure.
> However, I can't seem to use different fonts, sizes or
styles as I

Show me your template, tell me what you are trying to change,
and I'll
explain to you what is happening.

Quick Question regarding an error with editable regions
Hello,
I am a co-op student and I work with other students as well, on our large company website. I have always been considered the cheif coder, and nobody knew the wesite layout and file directory as well as me. However, something terrible has happened while somebody was updating some information on one of your HTML pages.
I logged in to Dreamweaver CS3 on afternoon to make a very simple text error change on our website. As soon as I hit "synchronize sitewide", it stated that there was no synchronization necessary, although I had already made a change. So then, on the template (.DWT) page, I thought I would backspace any character, and then retype it again in order for the "save" option to appear, so that I could save the template, and have it update all HTML pages, as well as the page that had just said "no synchronization necessary". I thought that I had to update the template first, which was strange, as I never had to do this before.
When I clicked update, the error message that I got was that I have placed an editable region inside of a block tag. I checked the HTML pages as well as our template (.DWT) pages, and indeed, the <!--TemplateBeginEditable-->"Page Header"<!--TemplateEndEditable--> was embedded in a <h1></h1> pair. The pair appears black and delete-able in the template files, and grey in the HTML files, which is expected. However, I have been working at this institution for four months, and I recall that the <h1> tag pair had always been there since I remember. (How badly did this other person mess up?! =S)
I tried to delete it from the .DWT file (the small editable region, and the <h1> tags), and now, what happens is that if I try to save a template so it updates all other HTML pages before synchronization, the template simply does not update anything, and I get no message whatsoever after clicking Save.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for coping with these many details. I simply want to be able to update HTML pages again, because my boss really needs it, and I have never had such a problem before (having made much larger changes to this same website in the past)
Thanks again,
Mr. VHow many child pages are you supporting with this DWT? Hopefully less than 50 pages.
Is your code valid? HTML Validator - http://validator.w3.org
Can you post a link to your DWT page, or copy and paste your code here?

Editable regions and flash videos
Okay so im creating a new website and I have already got
stuck with something. The problem is rather annoying, I could first
easily insert flash videos to my website before I turned it into a
template, but I have now turned my pages into a template as im
creating a site with lots of videos on different pages. Thing is, I
have an 'editable region' in the middle section, and because of
that I cannot add videos to either my template file (.DWT) or my
other html files. It says I need to change code in the original
template to continue. Please help and thanks for reading!> It
> says I need to change code in the original template to

url to the page please??
tip: if inserting into a locked area of the template, if it's
dw 8.03 or
CS3, you need to insert the flash with a site root relative
path, so that
the paths come out right in the child pages.

Can't see/edit Editable Regions in Design view
I am unable to see or edit Editable Regions in Design view in
this template, or any pages created from it. Regions can be updated
& saved in Code view only. Recently upgraded to CS3 from DW8/OS
X 10.4.10. Have looked at other postings on this subject, but my
code does not contain the overflow reference. The header is an
include. Editable regions are body, sidebar, body2 and sidebar2.
The library item at the bottom of the page also does not show up in
the Design view. Please see attached code and advise.
Many thanks!!!Hi,
Yes I've had the disappearing animation problem. It shows in preview but not in design,
I deleted and re-inserted it. That cured it - but for how long.
This latest update has been a disaster for me.

"Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3″ a JPEG?
Hey, I have a problem: when I try to "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3″, and select "Edit a Copy" It doesnt open in Photoshop CS3 a .PSD file: it opens a .JPG file.
I'm viewing an JPEG, and I have selected to copy as PSD.
Is that ok? Comments? Thanks!
PC - Vista - LR 1.3.1> I have a problem: when I try to "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3″, and select "Edit a Copy" It doesnt open in Photoshop CS3 a .PSD file: it opens a .JPG file.
To my way of thinking, this is correct behavior. When it's opened in PS, it *is* a JPEG to start with. You do your edits, then you SAVE as whatever you want. If you want it back to a JPEG, Save as, otherwise, you can save as PSD or TIFF and you won't have lost anything due to re-compression.
Converting a JPEG to PSD only to open it immediately in PS does nothing positive, and is just an extra step. -
How to remove Editable region from nested template?
I'm trying to remove an editable region from a nested
template while retaining it in the parent template. DW doesn't want
to let me do this.
Example:
- I've created an overall template call ALLPAGES.DWT
- In it, there's an editable region called "related links".
- The "related links" will stay the same for all my main
pages (welcome, news, info, etc), so I'd like to create a nested
template called MAINPAGES.DWT where the field is locked.
So here's what I did; I started a new page from ALLPAGES.DWT
and then I created a template MAINPAGES.DWT from it. Now I want to
remove the editable region "related links". According to the DW
manual, I should be able to highlight the region and go to
Modify > Templates > Remove Template Markup, but that
option is greyed out!
Apparenlty the only way of removing the editable region is to
create a smaller editable region within it. But that's unnecessary
and sloppy. How can I remove the region entirely?> This use of nested templates is very useful and very
simple and
> straightforward.
> It involves no additional overheads, and introduces no
reliability

I really disagree with this.
> I cannot understand why Murray has such a bad attitude
to nested
> templates.
I spent quite a bit of time using them, tweaking them,
understanding them,
and watching the problems that others have had here on the
forum. My
compelling conclusion is that there is nothing you can do
with nested
templates that you cannot do more simply and with far less
trouble by using
other methods, some involving other kinds of template
regions, and some
involving simple use of Library items, or better, server-side
includes.

I assure you, it's based on much more study and experience
than you have put
into it.

This is not only unkind, it's completely erroneous. Far and
away, I am the
single most enthusiastic proponent for the use of templates
on these boards.
Perhaps a read of my book would help you rid yourself of your
attitude, too.

Editable region but not in code view
EDIT: While cooking dinner I thought that the computer "fixes" itself when it reboots what about Dreamweaver? I closed DW down. Reopened the app and voila. I CAN edit that section in code view now. It's weird but it appears to be working. I'll repost if something is amiss again regarding this issue. I'll leave the post up in case it's helpful to anyone else. thanks.
I have new pages made from a template. I can only edit in design view NOT in code view. I get the standard error of I'm trying to edit where I'm not allowed. I've made templates many times but never had this problem (I don't think!). Does someone have a tip or help for me? In addition to this issue I was not able to change the title of the page until I added the editable region in the template for title line. That's always been default editable before. Thanks a lot. I'm using DW8.
begining code from template:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="title" --><title>Party Invitation Boutique</title> <!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
begining code from new pages:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/index.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="title" --><title>Baby Blue</title> <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
-------------then further down on the page is the editable region-------------
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="main_content" -->
<div id="content_right">test only can type in design view. can't add div boxes
even in this editable region. ugh. can't even type next this this text in the
code view. </div>
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->Best thing you can do in the future is run your code through the validator if the editable region exists:
http://validator.w3.org/
If there are code errors with other tags on the page then it is possible DW is overlooking its own template code. Unfortunately without seeing the whole page I cannot say this is definitely the case, but a likely possibility.
