Edited in LR 3 but printed in LR 4 produce very dark prints

Images I edited in LR 3 and printed in LR 4 all turn out very dark and off color. Images edited in LR 4 and printed from LR 4 print just fine. Can anyone offer me a solution to this issue?

I have attached 3 photos.
When I took the photos I shot as both raw and jpeg. I have attached the following:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5ebbdi4o3u14wk3/CZWB8wJcce/Grainy%20Photos?lst
  a.. the original raw photo
b.. the jpeg that came with it (as is out of the camera)
  c.. the final edited jpeg
d.. A screen print of the image uploaded to printing lab (It will look grainy around the hair line...but that's the problem)
I have played around a fair bit. All looks great in LR and when I get out of LR and open them up full screen out of windows explorer they look good too.
It was only when the bride complained about the blurriness, I then tried uploading the final high resolution file to RGB Digital Labs that you could see how bad they were.
Last night I was playing around and I tried uploading the jpeg straight out of the camera to RGB labs and that too was bad. So I am starting to think would it be the camera, but then again when they look so good after editing why would they look bad at print time. Photo was taken at f$ 1/200 shutter speed and ISO 320 (so it’s not like I didn’t have light) I had a flash as well
I think I am going to have a mental breakdown!!!
So far from what I have found to get the picture looking ok  Sharpness is “0”and luminance is set to 100 – so too extremes which just does not seem right, I have never had to do this before.
Any help would be great
Thanks
Sara

  • Leopard + Aperture 2 + Epson R1800 == very dark prints

    Hi,
Before I upgraded to Leopard, I was able to get very nice prints from Aperture on my Epson R1800 printer.
After I upgraded to Leopard, the prints end up very dark. A bit of additional info follows.
    My monitor is correctly calibrated.
I installed new drivers from Epson's website (v6.12), and I verified I'm using those, and not Apple's Gutenprint drivers.
In the print settings I turn color management off, and than select correct ICC profile in the Aperture that matches paper and quality settings. For example, for printing on Epson Premium Glossy paper with PhotoRPM settings, I select "SPR1800 PrmGlsy PhotoRPM.icc" profile. Hit print, and after a bit of time the print comes out of the printer very dark. This sounds like ICC profile got dropped someplace along the way (in Aperture? in driver?).
If I go the other route, and let driver/printer manage color by selecting either normal or vivid options in print settings, and than use "system managed" setting in Aperture, the prints come out bright (maybe even a bit too bright). However, in this case the colors are off. Very off. Skin tones are especially bad with strong yellowish cast (people on the prints look if they were seriously sick).
Has anybody managed to get usable prints from Aperture 2 + Leopard combo on Epson R1800? Or any other comparable Epson printer (R800, R2400, new R1900)?
Searching forums, I found a lot of articles discussing Leopard and Epson printers problems for Adobe products (CS2/CS3/LightRoom), but not much for Aperture 2.
Unrelated question... I attempted to ask this in Aperture forum, but there was no post link. Do I need something special to be able to ask questions there?

Well, believe it or not, with the help of Epson support on the phone, I've figured this out. First of all, there is definitely a problem with Aperture's color management. What used to work (setting a color profile in the Aperture print dialog, and selecting "no color management" in the printer dialog) definitely does not work at this point.
If you want color management, what you have to do is select "System Managed" in the Aperture print dialog, and select "Color Controls - Epson Standard" in the Epson dialog. What this does is select the standard Epson profile for the paper you have selected. For example, if you've chosen Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper, the printer driver will use the "SPR1800 Premium Glossy" profile (Epson's standard profile for that paper, assuming you've downloaded it). Of course, that gives you Epson's version of what you want to print. If you have created your own profiles, using a spectrophotometer for example, you need to get the printer driver to apply YOUR profile instead of Epson's.
Here's how to apply your profile: Open Colorsync (in the Utilities folder), and select "Printers" in the Devices menu. Under the printer model, Stylus Photo R1800, for my case, select the profile for the paper you're interested in, say "SPR1800 Premium Glossy", and look on the right side of the window at "Current Profile:". Click the down arrow, and select "Other". Navigate to the profile you've created, and click "Open". This will set the profile you've created as what the printer driver will use when it thinks it's applying the SPR1800 Premium Glossy profile. Set other paper profiles (e.g., "SPR1800 Enhanced Matte") to whatever profile you've created for those papers.
Now, when you select "System Managed" in the Aperture dialog, and "Color Controls - Epson Standard" in the Epson dialog, it will apply your own profile.
Hopefully, Apple will fix the problem with color management, and we'll be able to go back to color management as it was before. In the meantime, this is the only work-around I've found.

  • Very Dark Prints!!

Hi, I have a 24" Imac, purchased in March 2009. I have been using Aperture for about 4-months now and finally decided to have some of my images printed by a professional lab. Fortunately they offer a calibration print service for free. So I recieved the prints back today one set colour corrected and the other straight print. What i can see straight away is that the straight prints i.e. no correction are very dark compared to the image on my screen. The colour corrected images are a bit closer to what is on screen i.e lighter. \the process i am using is shooting in AdobeRGB make corrections then export the image 300DPI(requested by lab) Jpeg quality 12, Colour Space SRGB. I am running a Huey Pro calibration tool. I have read on other photographic sites that the Imac's screens are generally far too bright and i may have to use shades software to bring the brightness down to an acceptable brightness. But i am not sure if this will interfere with the Huey calibration. I guess what i am trying to do is match my screen image to my un-corrected print. I am relatively new to photography and very self critical. So any help would be much appreciated!!!

I used a 24" imac with a Huey pro and got GREAT results before upgrading to a mac pro. Prints ordered directly through aperture where identical to what I saw on screen. Costco prints needed about a 1.05 gamma adjustment in the export dialog.
When I calibrated the monitor however, I did the following:
I lowered the brightness to about 25% and I threw a dark sweatshirt over the monitor during calibration to avoid any issues with reflections. You will also want to make sure you are setting your Gamma to 2.2 instead of 1.8.
Other than that, make sure you use the histogram to confirm your exposure is correct.

  • Very Dark Printing iPhoto 06?

I have never had a problem printing beautiful images with iPhoto 06 but the first images I have printed (8x10, 5MB file from a 4MP Olympus) show nice and bright on the screen and then show up dark, dull and grey on Glossy paper. I have checked and double checked my settings and they are all the same as before.
I'm printing to an Epson Sytlus C84.

I posted in a different thread about this but I will restate more or less. The problem is probably the profile or profiles. Most consumer devices like printers and many cameras use iRGB color space but some software including Apple for years used RGB color space for their profiles. Printing from RGB to iRGB makes a muddled mess of things. Also, many printers nowdays have built in "enhancements" that need to be disabled to get the proper colors.
My Canon will let me disable the color correction of the Canon driver which gives me very good prints with iPhoto 6. My Epson 1280 is more complicated since it's a better photo printer and GIMP has all kinds of settings. My Epson R200 has the same easy disable color button that the Canon has and all three will print fine with iPhoto so long as I disable all the automatic correction crap and I use the proper screen profile to make sure I "see" what the printer will "see". Many times the display is too warm(redish) or too cold (bluish) out of the box and needs to be dialed in some for the proper coloring.
Now, if this is all true, and it appears to be at least on my iMac G5, then Apple has crossed a line from easy to use iPhoto to pain in the butt to the less knowlegable digital imagery users. Granted, it gives you much more control over the print but it requires you have a much better understanding of what is really going on with the screen, software, print drivers and printer. For example, the GIMP drivers for the Epson 1280 will let me tune to the particuler ink I have loaded along with everything else. Not what I want to show my father-in-law who has a hard time with the taking of the picture, much less color workflow.
All of this begs the question if there are significant differences between the LCDs of the old G5 iMac, Cinema displays and the new Intel boxen. I will bet there are which adds to the confusion.

  • File is editable in ai & pdf but shows up blank in Bridge & will not print

I have a CS3 ai file (tri fold brochure) which I have printed in past- I made small revisions and now the  file does not show up when in Bridge or when I upload to my online printer vender the preview is blank.   The side B of this brochure DOES show up in Bridge. Both side A and B ai files consist of vector images & vector type plus raster images.  This same issue applieds to the PDF I generated from ai file. What could be problem?

Artwork is set up on a non printing layer -or- artwork is set to overprint.

  • Very dark prints suddenly

Been using Elements 11 for 8 months - no prob.  PS Elements manages color.  Suddenly, all my prints are coming out darkish blue/green....murky!  I have not done anything different.  I had my printer checked out and it's not that.  I uninstalled Elements and got a new download and still have the issue!  Please help!!

    OggieStarr:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I've not had problems with my R200 but in the Advanced printer options there are two areas, Color Management and ColorSync.
In the ColorSync section you can select the Lightness Increase Quartz filter to see if that will help.
In the Color Management section you can try several options:
    ColorSync
    No Color Adjustment
Color Controls where you can try switching from Epson Vivid to Epson standard.
Although the Color Management section will probably affect color it may help in the lightness.
You could also run ColorSync Utility to see if there's anything there you can do to affect lightness thru a color profile.
Color accuracy is usually more difficult to achieve than density. Let's hope it the same in your case.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Printing from Safari results in very light prints

Recently, every time I print from Safari (like a purchase confirmation or an airline ticket confirmation) the output is very light, almost unreadable, but printing from a Word document results in a normal print. My printer is an Epson R340 connected to my Mac Pro via an Airport Base Station. Any suggestions for a fix?

Your printer settings for Safari should be in the Print dialog, and I believe the one you want to check is ColorSync > Quartz Filter > Lightness Decrease to see if that makes your prints better.
Is your profile correct in saying that you're running 10.3.x and Safari 1.3.2? If not, you should update it with the specific point-version of OS X you have running, and the exact version of Safari.

  • Item on screen appears brilliant color, but printed version very dark and untrue to color.

I have recently received an invitation file for my wedding invitations which are in a very brilliant shade of purple. However, when I had them printed, they turned out a very dark, almost black/blue color. I converted the file from RGB to CMYK as directed, but no color change was observed. I even tried printing a copy at home and I received the same result. No matter how I play around with the shade, the color doesn't even come close to printing true to on-screen color. What am I doing wrong?!

  • Exported pdf images print very dark

I bought a new color laser printer a Samsung clp-610nd. Samsung support has been awful. The pdf I am trying to print has image, jpgs from photoshop. I use a Macbook Pro. The pdf text prints great, the images are very dark. I can print the pdf on a deskjet and the images are accurate. I am sure this is a color issue but I dont know what I am doing wrong. Any thoughts on where to start?  If I print straight from indesign, the images are also dark. I just dont know enough color profiles to figure this out.

    Stix Hart wrote:
As you've proved yourself this is a printer problem, not Indesign...
    Ah, but which printer?
Without a calibrated and profiled monitor there's no way to know if the image is displaying correctly, and consequently of knowing if either printer is rendering correctly.
Make sure you aren't managing color twice. Either your application or the printer should be using color management, but not both. I prefer to let the application do it if it can.
You can play with profiles until you are blue in the face, but it will be shooting blind unless you calibrate the monitor first, and it will be even better if you get custom profiles for the printers. The odds are equally good that your inkjet prints light as that the laser prints dark. Most laser drivers also include density adjustments that allow you to print darker or lighter.

  • Macbook Pro Retina OSX v. 10.8.3 -Canon Printer MP560. Printer no longer responds to print commands from the computer, printer and network work but cannot get docs from my macbook to print anymore.

Until last week, my printer and Macbook worked fine together - could print any doc or pdf, web page from my computer. Then it stopped - my printer will still make copies but will not print anything I send from my Mac. I have checked network connections, the printer WiFi connection works. I have not changed or added any thing different to my settings. I am out of ideas. thanks, Pattee

    Hello Pattee,
The following article has a number of troubleshooting steps that may help get your Printer working again.
OS X Mountain Lion: Troubleshoot a network printer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11070
Make sure you’re on the same network
Your computer might not be able to find a printer that’s on another local network.
To see if the printer you want to use is on the same network as your computer, try adding it again. If the printer doesn’t appear in the list of available printers, your computer might be on a different network now.
If you know the printer’s IP address (for example, 192.168.1.100), you can try adding it as an IP printer. For instructions, see this help topic:Set up an IP printer
    Add your printer again
Try to add your printer again in Print & Scan preferences. If you can print to the newly added printer queue, delete the old printer queue.
If you can’t add the printer because it doesn’t appear in the list of available printers, it may be turned off, or your computer may be on another network now. if the printer was shared by another user, the user may have stopped sharing it, or the user’s computer may be offline. If you don’t manage the printer, ask the person who does for help.
    Edit your list of printers
    Set up a printer
    Reset the printing system
If none of the previous solutions work, the printing system may be corrupted and need to be reset. This removes all printers from your list of printers, deletes information about completed print jobs, and deletes any printer presets.
    Reset the printing system
    Cheers,
    Allen

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee

  • HP4500 printer went off line. I can print the test page but nothing from the IMAS

Network down, re-set - now can't get the printer to function. HP4500 wireless.  Was able to print a test page but when I try to print from the computer I get the "printer off-line" message. I don't know how to fix this.

Try removing the printer from the printer list, then re-add it.
Are you sure you have the latest drivers?
