Edited photos eating up memory

As far as I can tell, if I import a photo and then edit it, say correct red eye, a second copy of that photo is then created rather than copying over the original. Same things seems to happy if I change the name. I am wondering if this is a one-to-one relationship (i.e. a 1MB photo is renamed, or edited, and now I have two 1MB photos). Is this the case? I have gotten various answers.
Seems like not a big deal if looking at one photo, but when I am talking about thousands of photos, a lot of memory will be burned. If this is the case, is there some way to get rid of the original - once I fix red-eye or rename, I no longer want the original (I would want the original if I cropped, however). Thanks!

if I import a photo and then edit it, say correct red eye, a second copy of that photo is then created rather than copying over the original.
This is correct. iPhoto is a Digitial Asset Manager and works to the best principles of DAM. It treats your original file in the same way as the film shooter minds the negative. This process is hard wired into iPhoto and cannot be stopped. If you don't want this feature then the best thing is to us another application.
Also, this feature is required for the working of the Non Destructive editing feature.
Same things seems to happy if I change the name.
What do you mean by "change the name"? There is no way to rename a file in iPhoto. You can add a title to the photo. This does not create a new version.
I am wondering if this is a one-to-one relationship (i.e. a 1MB photo is renamed, or edited, and now I have two 1MB photos)
Not quite. Every time you save a jpeg some data is lost. This is in the nature of jpegs- they are a compressed "lossy" format. So if you edit, then re-edit, then re-edit, each time your file is getting smaller as you lose data. iPhoto's Non Destructive editing feature prevents this. Each time you edit the sum of the edits is re-applied to the original, and so you never drop more than a single generation. But you need the original.
If this is the case, is there some way to get rid of the original - once I fix red-eye or rename, I no longer want the original
As I say, use another app. Going the Export/Trash/Re-import route is a lot of work, and makes it really easy to inadvertently chuck away the wrong version, and as I said, destroys the non- Destructive Editng feature. Using an app that works the way you prefer is much easier and less risky.
If you're concerned about Disk Space you can run a library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • FAQ: How do I edit photos in Revel?

Start by installing Adobe Revel to your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Android device. Tell family and friends who will be
viewing your Adobe Revel photos to install the apps, too.
When you're sharing photos with friends and family, you want them to look their best so that everyone gets to experience and enjoy the moment as much as you did. That’s why we built intuitive and powerful editing tools right into Revel. Make every moment look exactly how you want to remember it with ease.
    Editing Photos in Revel
You can edit a photo on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone using Adobe Revel. Changes are saved to your photo library, so
the photo looks the same on any device.  The Revel cloud keeps a copy of your full res originals. Edits in  revel are non-destructive, so your original is always preserved (unedited). When you export photo (MAC) Save to Camera Roll (iOS), that's when Revel applies your edits. On iOS the preview is used. on MAC the full resolution of the original is used to generate the new edited photo.
    Add adjustments to your photos
Go to the photo you wish to edit.
Click on the +- Edit button on the bottom center of the page on the iPad or the iPhone.
Select a preset adjustment look or adjust red eye, crop, or rotate.

Use the crop and red-eye removal tools help you create the perfect memory by eliminating unwanted parts of a photo. And when you have a special memory, use the advanced controls in Revel to give it a look all your own.
Edits you make to a photo appear when you view the photo on any device. Because Adobe Revel saves the edits as separate instructions rather than as changes to the original photo, you can always undo any edits you've made. For example, you can select a black-and-white look, and then if you change your mind, tap or click Undo. If you make a series of edits and then change your mind, tap or click Cancel.
To improve lighting or contrast, tap or click Adjustments. Drag the White Balance, Exposure, and Contrast sliders to achieve the effect you want. Tap or click the two-way  arrows (see image below) for additional sliders that give you finer control
Looks: Turn a photo into an amazing photo with a single tap. With  24 different photo filters it's easy to create a photo that will impress your friends and family.

the original image, just click "Undo"
iPhone Users:  There is  an "undo" button and "compare" button so you can see the before and after result for adding an adjustment to your image.
    Red Eye
Using Revels Red Eye removal is easy. Just click on the "Auto Detect & Correct" or click on the persons eyes in your image  as Revel will automatically correct the red eyes.
    Crop & Rotate
Crop: To remove unwanted areas of the photo, tap or click Crop & Rotate. Drag a corner or side of the frame to resize it. Drag the photo itself to reposition it. Pinch your fingers open to zoom in on the photo within the frame.

Iphone Users: You can share your photos via e-mail or upload your images directly to Facebook, Flickr, Twitter & Tumblr.
    Actions Menu
Add Photo to Album: Add your photo to a new album or existing album in your library
Save Current to cameral roll: Exports the current version of the image that you have applied any adjustments to
Save Original to cameral roll: Exports the original image with out any adjustments applied.
Storing your original photos When you import a photo, Adobe Revel uploads a copy of the original to the cloud.
By default, Adobe Revel also stores a copy of the original on your computer in /Pictures/Adobe Revel Library
The files are stored in a "package" titled Adobe Revel Library. Control click on the package and select "Show Package Contents" from the menu. Then you will be able to view the images in the finder window.
    Favorites
When working with a single photo,  click on the "STAR" to mark your photo as a favorite. The image will show with a star under the "Favorites" in your Revel library.
    Add captions to your photos
Create lasting memories by preserving all the info and details related to each of your photos.
    Deleting photos
Be careful! Deleting a photo removes it from Revel on all your devices, not just the one you're working on. Make sure you really don't want the photo anymore before you delete it.
For example: If you delete the image on your phone or iPad, the image will also be deleted from the Adobe Revel Library in the /Pictures/Adobe Revel Library directory on your computer. Its always a good practice to back up your images to a location on your hard drive.

I lost my belongings via theft from a storage unit. As it was scheduled for move the next day I did not purchase insurance. Probably an inside job, painful leason learned. This also left me no way to repurchase all i lost.
As a photographer my greatest loss is having a computer to download and edit photos. Money is scarce and I am considering an ipad, understanding even this may not be affordable. Can anyone advise me whether an ipad can replace a pc?  Are there ports?  How crucial is memory?  I could edit photos then store them on flash drives if the ipad cannot handle load. Never having owned one I'm afraid I am completely ignorant on these issues and am grateful for any guidance. Thank you!

No.  The iPad while a powerful tablet, is not a PC replacement. It is limited in what it can do.
    Trishfromaz wrote:

No USB ports or of any other kind if that is what you are asking.  There's the sync/charge port you can use with the Lightning to USB camera Adapter, but only to load photos onto the iPad. It cannot write out to USB drives.

iPads are not upgradeable. So what you buy is what you get. Memory is 1GB.  Storage space can go from 16GB up to 128GB
Depending on what Image editor applications you use, there may not be a version for iPad with the features you need.

  • Any way to "save" edited photos in iPhotos as you progress?

I am new to the Mac environment and wanted to know how to manually "save" edits as you do them. I want to have the option to "go back" to an already saved photo, in case I mess up while trying to modify or touch up a photo. I have been working on a photo album project and noticed when using the "Retouching" option, after I complete my edits, I click "done". It goes back into the album page, and the photo doesn't look the same and it looks distorted. I tried closing the app, restarting to see if it was cached memory issue, but it still looks distorted. The only way to go back is the "revert to original", losing ALL changes/edits I spent a lot of time doing! Any help would be appreciated...thanks.

Well, after each edit function you could save by clicking on "done", then create a duplicate of the edited photo to do the next audit function. Then hit "done" and repeat the procedure for each edit function. At some point, you will find out which edit function is causing the distortion. But you will be able to revert back to the previously edited version without wiping out everything you have done.

  • Can i retrive lost edited photos in apature?

Please help! I imported photos from a memory card to aperture. When asked if I wanted to delete the photos off my memory card I said no. I then spent several hours editing those photos. I then pulled the memory card out, took more photos, uploaded them and edited them. I did this several times, always choosing not to clear my memory card when asked. Today, when asked if I waold like to delete photos off the memory card I hit yes. I have now lost all of my edited images. The original are still there but every edited images is gone.
Does anyone know why this happend and is there any way to retrieve the edited images.
    THank you for your help!

Thank you for your reply leonieDF.
The original, un-edited Photos are there under receintly imported project. Also, I made a seperate folder for each project I was working on. Those folder contained edited photos but now all of the edits are gone and every image is restored to the original image.
The setting in the "Import" panel are set to "in apature library"
So you imported into the library, and browsing only shows the original version. Something must have changed the way you are viewing your images.  When you reopened Aperture, was there a warning that the Aperture library needs repairing?
Those folder contained edited photos but now all of the edits are gone and every image is restored to the original image.
Have enabled version stacks, so that your edited versions may be stacked behind the original versions?
How are you telling that you are viewing the originals? When you look at the Adjustment tab of Inspector, are all checkmarks for adjustments cleared and no longer set?
Have you accidentally pressed the "M" key? When you do that in the Browser, Aperture will show the originals instead of the edited image.

  • I was editing photos and it was getting stuck or frozen and working really slow, so I attempting to close aperture and reopen it but it won't quit aperture and now it won't open up to my photos either.  Any ideas?

I was editing photos and it was getting stuck or frozen and working very slowly.  I attempted to restart the computer but it would not allow me to quit aperture.  Now aperture appears in my toolbar but will not open up so I can work on any photos.  Any ideas?

Did you try opening from the Applications folder?
Depending on how far that gets you, I would also take a look at the Troubleshooting Basics.

  • What happens to the original photo after editing?  Does it get replaced by the edited photo?

I just bought my first iPhone(5).  On Android, when editing a photo, the original stays in your gallery and the edited photo gets placed right next to it.  So what I want to know is, When editing a photo in the photo app, what happens to the original since it would be nice to be able to make different edits of it.

That is an excellent question. This is definitely not the programmed behavior of Photoshop Elements. Normally, when you edit a file, a new copy of the file is created (the original is simply left alone). This new copy of the file will have "_edited-1" added to the end of the name. It should definitely not be adding $ to the name at all.
Just as a test, create a new user account on your computer, and try editing another image to see if does the same thing there. However, I suspect there is another application on your computer that is modifying how files are saved, deleted, and renamed.

The folks here would need far more information from you before they provide help.
You know the drill:  Exact OS...PS version...etc. The more you provide, the better.
What is the exact message that is displayed?
What have you tried so far?
Do the files display on your browser? In Bridge?
What are you doing when it happens?
Are the files still on your cameras card? If so and,you copy one to your desktop and save it without changes, does it reload properly?
Don't worry about providing too much information. Every little bit helps.

  • How do I edit photos  stored on external wifi drive with iPad?

I have stored many photos on a Seagate Wifi external drive and would like to edit them using my iPad.  Only photos stored on Camera Roll come up for editing.  Can anyone help solve this problem please.

I don't have either the device or the associated app, but from a quick glance at the Seagate site it looks like you would have to follow a three- or four-step process:
    * Use the Seagate Media App to copy photo(s) from the external drive to your Camera Roll.
    * Use the editing program of your choice to edit it/them.
    * Use the Seagate Media App to copy the edited photo(s) back to the external drive
    * Optionally, remove the editied photo(s) from the Camera Roll.

    Hi Robbin,
When you edit in iPhoto, iPhoto saves the original in an originals folder and the edits are made on a copy. You can always revert back to the original by control clicking on the image and scrolling to "revert to original"
If you want to see both the original and the edited version in the library, duplicate the original and edit the duplicate image.

Here's something you can try with a copy of your current library.
1 - go to iPhoto's Events preference pane and set the auto split option to 1 day per even.
2 - go the the Events mode, select all Events.
3 - go to the Events menu  and and select Autosplit Selected Events.
which will give you an event for each day.
4 - again select all events (although it might be better do to fewer at a time) and export them to your desired destination via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export  menu option with the following settings:
The workflow above will produce a folder for each days photos with the date as the folder's title.

  • How can I make the edited photo appear in my folder?

Hi! This is my first post here, and I've just acquired Lightroom after having worked with ACDSee Pro (currently v6) for some years. I love taking photos and editing them later if necessary.
I understand that LR works differently to ACDSee, with the catalogue and all, and I've successfully imported my picture folders into my new LR catalogue. What I haven't yet been able to grasp is what LR does with my edited photos. When I edit (develop) a picture in ACDSee, the edited version of that photo appears in my original folder as soon as I have finished editing it.
With LR, after having done my processing all I can see in my folder is the original, unedited picture. The edits are only visible in LR, but not anywhere else. I'd like to see the edited photo in my folder so that I can use it, for example, for screen saver slide shows. I don't want to go and look for this edited picture in any place other than its original folder, and neither do I want to have two copies of it, namely the original and the edited version, in that folder. All I care for at this point is the edited version since the original can be restored at any time from within LR, or at least I think this how it should be since that's how I did it with ACDSee if I wanted to go back to the original picture.
Is there any way I can achieve what I'm looking for with LR?
Thank you very much for your assistance for a total LR beginner.
    Hugo

and neither do I want to have two copies of it, namely the original and the edited version, in that folder
I don't think this is possible, given the normal way Lightroom works. You have the original (the image contained in this file is never modified by Lightroom) and you will have the export.
Note: you could instruct Lightroom to overwrite your original (if it was a JPG or TIF or PSD, but not a RAW), however this is extremely discouraged and your original would be gone. Your assumption "since the original can be restored at any time from within LR" is incorrect, that is not how Lightroom works if you overwrite the original JPG TIF or PSD (which of course is just one of several reasons why this approach is extremely discouraged).
