Edited photos reverting to original automatically

I am in iPhoto'09 and it has stopped showing the edited pictures, keeps reverting back to the original. It worked last night, but stopped today. My wife did have the library open (shared image) and it won't save in her account either.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Moreover, I accidentally deleted an already imported facebook album and it automatically got deleted from facebook as well. Is this something fixable? Can I change the settings so it doesn't automatically delete between the two accounts?

You always have both - in edit mode depress the shift key to see the original - to revert to it right click on a photo and choose revert to original

No - keeping iPhoto and the social media sites in sync is a feature of iPhoto - if you do not want that upload directly to the sites using their uploader or Safari rather than using iPhoto

Edited photo and lost original

Does anyone know how to reinstate an original photo once it has been edited? I was playing around - i didnt even want to edit it and it just started saving changes without me even telling it to! Now the photo is completely ruined. Any help would be much appreciated!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Try Right- (or Control-) Click on the pic in the iPhoto Window. From the resulting file, choose 'Revert To Original'. Or select the file and go Photos menu -> Revert To Original.
And prior to saving, apple-z will undo the last things you've done.

Saving edited photo separate from original

How do I save a photo that I have cropped and modified in other ways as a separate photo from the original? If I choose "return to original version" I lose the changes.
One other question if anyone can help me has to do with my iPhoto Library. I have a lot of photos, but none of them appear when I use Finder on iPhoto Library.

Duplicate the pic first, and make your edits on the duplicate. If you want multiple versions from a single master you'll need to use another app - Aperture, for instance.
One other question if anyone can help me has to do with my iPhoto Library. I have a lot of photos, but none of them appear when I use Finder on iPhoto Library.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to look inside the Library? Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

Saving Edited Photos Reverts Settings to Reset Mode

hey everybody,
I have some great pictures i took at a concert I went to early this month. I've been playing with the 'sharpness' and the 'highlights' on some of the photos. When I go to the next photo, it says "Saving Changes" on the box that appears in my window. The altered photo appears in the thumbnail, and is A-Ok when i enlarge it, but it is reseting all of the edit options back to their original settings. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong would be appreciated.
Also, do the raw images uploaded from the camera get saved anywhere even if they files are edited?

How are you seeing this - if you export the photo or grab it via the media viewer it should be A-ok
Also, do the raw images uploaded from the camera get saved anywhere even if they files are edited?
The RAW is saved in the originals folder as the digital negative - the edited photo is saved as a JPEG in the modified folder - but do not go into the iPhoto library to get tehm - use iPhoto or the media viewer for all access to the photos in the library

Editing photo but still keeping the original

I am new to iphoto and I hope this is not a dumb question. But how do I edit a photo for a project, but till want to retain the original photo? I want to convert several photos to black and white for a project, but I want to also save the original in it's color format. Am I missing something?

Simply, it does it automatically.
When you edit a shot iphoto applies those edits to a copy of the original. If you want to revert then check out the Photos -> Revert to Original command.
If you want the Original side by side in the iPhoto Window then duplicate the photo first and then edit the duplicate. This will give you your Original and an edited version in the iPhoto Window.
If having versions is a big part of your work then check out Aperture, where this is easier to do.

How does one revert to original photo after corrections such as redeye assist?

using common edit tools in Iphoto, I used redeye assist, and now cannot revert to orig. file
so my picture looks like a raccoon....any helpful suggestion to gain original file again would
be gratefully accepted...thanks!

In iPhoto 9 (11) you need to use the Photos ➙ Revert to Original menu option.

Editing photos (from iphoto) in PSE 11

I've recently upgraded to PSE 11 from PSE 10. Previously, when I click edit in iphoto, the photo that I want to edit automatically opens up in PSE 10 and I can do my edit rightaway.
However, the photo does not open up automatically in PSE 11 now. My computer will launch PSE 11 but I have to manually load the photo for editing.
I've done the necessary settings in iphoto (i.e edit using external editor) but it's still not working like it used to.
Is this a change in feature in PSE 11 or I'm missing something here?

In iphoto, for any edited photo (no matter where you edited), to see the original, select the edited photo and go to Photo>Revert to Original. iPhoto remembers your original, but versions in iphoto don't work the same way the do in PSE, at least not when you use an external editor. iPhoto assumes that if you want to use another program for editing, you want to use that other program for editing. If you want to use iphoto instead, you would need to revert it. If you want to have both available, the original and PSE edit, some versions of iphoto automatically send a duplicate for editing, but I don't think the latest version does, so make a duplicate in iphoto and send that to PSE.
An external editor is by definition external --the photo left iphoto to get edited. The external editor mechanism merely lets you get your edited photos back into iphoto again automatically.

Revert to Original not working

I am contemplating upgrading from iPhoto5 to iPhoto6, but have noticed a bug in my iPhoto5 directory that I think that I should fix before the upgrade. A number of my edited photos will not allow me to revert to original. The option is grayed out. Looking in the iPhoto directory structure, I see both the edited photo and the Original photo in the Originals directory, both where they belong.
It seems that iPhoto has lost track of the Original. If I do more edits to the photo, a new "Original" file appears in the Originals folder with the identical name as the true original, with the exception of a "_1.jpg" extension on the file. I can now perform a "Revert to Original", but iPhoto chooses the _1 file. I can never get back to my true original. This is happening in several, but not all, of my edited files and appears to be the result of a recent crash.
It seems to me that one option is to find all of the originals where this is happening, delete the photos from the library and then re-import them. Because of the number of the affected files, I'd like to avoid this if possible.
Has anyone seen this behavior before? Is there an easy way to fix the file/directory structure so that I don't have to do this manually (I have a lot of photos)? Or will the upgrade from iPhoto5 to iPhoto6 fix this (which I read chages the directories from date-based to roll-based)?
Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Did you by any chance do any renaming or moving of those file via the Finder?
You're right in that iPhoto has lost the original link to those files. What I'd try after making a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder is to rebuild the library and select the option to include orphaned files. This will rebuild your library and add those files that have lost their links to a new roll and album. From there you can move them to their correct roll before upgrading to V6.
V6 does change the folder system and creates a folder of original files based on each roll in your library. These go into and "Originals" folder. Any file modified gets the modified file placed in the "Modified" folder in a sub folder with the same name as the roll. If you rename a roll from within iPhoto those folders get renamed also.

Editing photos without changing the originals

I'm brand new to any Apple applications and thus far I have not been able to figure out how to keep my originals after doing any editing ie. croping or color enhancing. Can anyone tell me how to copy or save a seperate photo file? I have attempted it but the original forlder changes as well.

Are you using iPhoto? The good news is you don't have to do anything, the application does this for you.
No matter what you do, iPhoto always works on a copy. So if you crop, or enhance, edit in any way, export, your original is untouched and a copy is made with your changes. Look at your menu bar. Check out the Photos Menu, at the bottom of the list is 'Revert To Original'. You can use this if you dislike whatever you've done with the photo, or just want to start again.
In the iPhoto Library Folder you will see various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
However: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss
Anything you wish to do can - and should - be done within the iPhoto Window. If you want any help doing things, by all means post again.

Inability to revert to original in iPhoto

I edited a JPEG photo in iPhoto (cropped). However later and after editing some other photos, I decided to revert the first photo to its original version. However, the option Photo>Revert to original button was not lit. In the Quick Fixes tab of the Edit pane, the “Revert to Original” was similary not lit and nor was the “Revert to Previous”. It appears therefore that I am unable to trevert the photo. Any ideas?

That worked fine. I have gone back through my library and the issue appears to relate to some (but not all) photos that I brought across from my old iMAC (Power PC) which used iPhoto '06 and onto my new iMAC purchased in the summer of this year and running Lion plus iPhoto '11. Photos uploaded since are all fine. All data from the old machine was copied across using the Mac transfer facility for new machines. Interesting that the issue relates to old photos pre the new MAC - some that I know I edited now no longer permit revert to original. Also, if I amend them further, these changes are saved so that, again, I cannot revert to original. Looks like an issue relating to the way these files were brought across and are being saved in iPhoto '11.

Reverting to original & aliases.

If you only use aliases of photos in iPhoto 6, what happens if you edit a photo (either in iPhoto or an external editor) & decide you want to remove all the editing and revert to Original?

Any edit you perform on a photo is done on a copy that gets created and saved in the Modified folder. If you revert to original that modified file is deleted and the link is sent back to the original, just like the conventional type of iPhoto library. One downside (depending on your situation or point of view) with the alias method is that if a photo is deleted from the iPhoto library via iPhoto, the original file is not touched. One would have to delete that file via the Finder.

Way to organize edited photos

Wondering if there is an easy way to keep all original photos in their own section/folder/library and all photos edited or to be edited in their own section/folder/library?
For example, I have a folder for a group of photos that I want to print to 4x6 but I don't want all of the cropped-edited photos to be mixed in with my originals. How can I crop-edit and keep separate? Thanks.

iPhoto's organization is - iPhoto Library Description. The user has to accept that organization when using iPhoto.
When you crop an image iPhoto creates a new folder titled "Originals" and moves the original file to it. To get the original back into iPhoto (and lose the edited version) you just use the Photos->Revert to Original menu option. It's the nature of the beast.

Editing photos...quick question

hopefully an easy one for you all...when i edit the pictures, and go back to look at another picture, the edited pic reverts to original until I hit the edit button again. Anyway to solve this problem.
also, when I edit the pictures, the originals are being posted on my iweb sight, not the edited ones. any ideas?

After editing a photo, I sometimes get an error message that the "File is empty". Can revert to original and start again, but file disappears after editing.

So frustrating! I open the photo. Edit by cropping, adjusting color, etc. It's perfect. I click DONE and move on to the next. When I come back, the first photo is gone. I can see it in the album but cannot open it. When I look at the file information, it shows zero KB. If I move it to the desktop and try to open it, the error message says the file is empty. I can revert to original and there it is. Edit again, and again it disappears. What am I doing wrong? I am using iPhoto 09

You shooting with a Nikon? We've seen a few examples of this bug with Nikons on 09 and 10.6, with no solution except to upgrade.
