Editing a DNG file and saving it again as DNG using Photoshop

Hi everyone,
I have a set of .dng raw images which I would like to edit using Photoshop and save back out as .dng files.  It sounds like a very simple task, but I have been struggling with this for half a day.
To give a concrete example, I have two dng images from the same camera. I want to copy an object from one image and paste it to the other, and then save out the output as a .dng file.  This should take me like 2 minutes in Photoshop, right?
Well, when I open the files, it first brings up the Adobe Camera Raw tool, but this only lets me do very basic edits (I can't figure out how to copy an object from one image to another, let alone perform the necessary edits to blend them seamlessly.).
So I click "Open Image" to get them into Photoshop, where I can do all of my necessary edits (copy and paste, brushes, etc.).  However, after I am finished and I try to save my edits, Photoshop only lets me save the output in .psd (along with other formats) but not dng.  I need to save it back out as .dng, as the next program in our workflow pipeline requires .dng files as input.  So how do I do this simple task?
Why can't I save my resulting image back out as a .dng file?  I tried saving as .psd and then using Adobe DNG converter to turn it into a dng, but it doesn't seem to be able to do that.  I also tried saving as Photoshop RAW, but for some reason the converter can't convert from Photoshop RAW to DNG.  It doesn't make any sense to me.
I know that Photoshop knows my camera parameters because it was able to read the original dng files properly in the first place.  So why can't I read in the .dng image make some edits and then save it?  How are people editing dng files?
Thanks for your help.

Also, there is no way to turn an image back into raw image data after it has been edited in Photoshop. It would be as difficult as uncooking an egg.
I understand that this is difficult if I am doing arbitrary image editing operations, since those operations may not be properly defined in the RAW space.  But in this case I am cloning pixels from one .dng image to another.  Shouldn't this be possible?
For example, assume we have 2 dng images and we want to take the left half of one and paste it in the same position over the other.  I am not familiar with the dng spec, but at some level it should encode the values at each pixel (perhaps with the appropriate camera curve).  So I just simply want to overwrite the values of one .dng image with values at the same pixels of the other, and since it's the same camera with the same settings used for both this should be possible, right?  In the worst case, I could write a program based on the DNG spec that parses the two dng files, overwrites the necessary pixel information simply using the second image's data, and then writes the dng back out.  But this seems like a complicated way to do something that there should be an Adobe tool to do.
Perhaps it would help if I tell you exactly why I need this for.  We are capturing raw video using the Blackmagic Cinema Camera which outputs a directory full of 2.5k dng images for each take.  We were doing a take of a scene using a tripod, but an otherwise great take was ruined because at one point a crew member poked their head into frame.   So I want to use information from the other dng frames to overwrite this portion of this image to hide this problem.
If these were regular images (.jpg, .tif, .exr) it would take us no time in Photoshop to use the information from the other "good" frames to fix this problem seamlessly.  However, we would like to keep everything in dng format so that I can then read everything into DaVinci Resolve for color grading correctly.   Any idea on how I can do this, if I can't use Photoshop?
Thank you in advance for your help!

  • No changes appear when batch editing Camera Raw Files and saving as jpegs

    When I batch edit my raw files, including saving the file as a jpeg, from bridge or photoshop the resulting file saved never includes any changes I made in the Camera Raw editor. For example if I have lightened the photo by changing the exposure in Camera Raw as a saved jpeg after batching the file is still as dark as when originally shot. Is there some little box I forgot to check or something? Thanks!
    andy

    I've seen something like this, but have not figured out why yet. In my situation I select a group of images in Bridge and go to Tools / Photoshop / Image Processor.
    There I click the "open first image to apply settings" box.
    Save in Same Location
    Save as JPEG, resize to fit (1200 pixels), Convert Profile to sRGB.
    No Action selected
    Include ICC Profile
    Run it and in Camera Raw roll the saturation down to -100 (convert to b&W).
    Click "Open Image"
    The process runs and the first image is converted to b&w, but the others are not.

  • I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files.   What am I missing here?

    I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files when both are present on the SD card.  JPGs are used for quick proofing on an iPad.    DNG RAW files are edited on a Mac Pro (2013).    Other than deleting the JPGs before importing images from the SD card,  is there any way to force Photo to select and import only the DNG images?

    Thanks Larry,
    I did see the J stacked in the lower left of the thumbnails but couldn't figure out how to get to whatever is below it.   How do you select R?
    I use an iPad to do quick proofs of my images.   A JPG is good enough for a proof ( dust on the lens,  composition, blown out image, etc. ).   The iPad is JPG friendly and can load the images quickly.    Serious editing takes place on my Mac Pro with the DNG files.   I use the same workflow with the the Leica M 240.   iPhoto has been a quick and easy importer to the Mac capturing all of the metadata in the EXIF sidecar file ( location, date, time,  camera settings, lens type).  A quick scan in iPhoto for the "keepers" let's me export those worth editing to Lightroom/Bridge/Photoshop.  I typically shoot 50 images from three locations in a normal day.  If I'm lucky I'll get 1 worth real work to add to the portfolio.

    Hello Anubha,
    I am using the Adobe annual licence for Adobe PDF pack. I wanted to be able to edit a PDF file and when I selected this function it said I needed to update to Adobe Pro – and then it would not allow mw to update. Is there an additional cost? And if so how much is it and how do I go about updating so I can use this functionality.
    Kind regards,

  • DNG Converter converts existing dng files to.....dng!

    Today I decided to convert all of the raw files on one hard drive to dng format.   The dng converter has converted about 4,000 of a little over 15,000 raw files so far.  I scrolled through the conversion status list and noticed that the converter is also converting existing dng files into dng files thus creating a duplicate.  Why in the world would a person need, or want to , convert existing dng files to dng files?  I new that I already had some dng files on the hard drive, but I never would have imagined that the converter would include dng files in the list of raw files to convert to dng.
    It is not a big deal to find and delete.  All I have to do is do a search for all files that end in _1.dng.  No biggie, but it seems redundant to me to waste time on this conversion.  Is there an option to choose not to convert dng files?  I can not look at the moment because the converter is converting dng files and is busy. LOL.

    You still have not provided any documentation to back up your assertion that Adobe makes plain, or even unplain for that matter, that DNG files are going to be included in the conversion process.  I am not asking you to "slavishly go over a variety of documents in order to provide proof", you state as a matter of fact that the documentation exists. Your failure or inability to produce any proof can only be interpreted as meaning that it does not exist.  You are speaking about something that you apparently do not have a clue about.  You only seem to act like you know what you are talking about.   It is pointless to discuss this with you any longer.  I accept the fact that you are not going to be able to provide official Adobe documentation stating that DNG files are going to converted along with camera dependent raw files.  Apparently, you had no prior knowledge of this issue, because you did not share a reason in your post.  And, you still do not share documentation....because you do not have any!  FAIL!
    As far as making contributions, just because I have only posted 14 times on this forum is not a clear indicator of my total contributions.  I am not going to get into a "I have made this many posts on this forum and that forum argument" with you.  It is pointless and childish.
    And how were you trying to help me?  You were not.  You offered nothing.  Your comment only had one purpose: to make fun of another person and/or to incite a reaction.  You did that very well.  You need to be honest with yourself and think about what kind of contribution you were making in your original post.  You did not offer anything accept for a smartaleck answer.
    As far as acknowledging the utility's ability to convert dng files to newer files, yes I knew that the converter could be used to update existing DNG files.  I did not imagine that it would convert an existing dng file and produce a duplicate.  Big difference!
    And what is wrong with venting?  I expressed frustration with something that I found bothering.  Adobe would like for everyone to adopt this format.  One way of achieving that goal is for people to use the converter.  But, if people are not happy with the converter, then they may not convert, or recommend the use of the converter.  I use the converter, and I use camera raw to convert to dng as well as converting upon import.
    You can not defend yourself on the issue of documentation to back up your claim apparently because it does not exist.
    I apologize for referring to you as "Mr. Smartypants".  I can clearly see now that I was wrong for calling you that.
    I know that I am guilty here of inserting my own emotion into your original response.  I have a 50% chance that I was correct in assuming that you were simply being humorous and not condescending.  Again, I should have ignored your post as it was completely worthless.  I apologize for that.
    And, at the moment, I do not feel very smart for participating in this childish discussion with you.  I am much too old to be doing this.

It was saved again as a PDF, and when reopened all of the callouts where there.  I tried to save it as a jpeg file, and when repoened all of the callouts were gone.  How do I save the file as a jpeg and have the callouts show?

    Hi Firepros1,
    You may try exporting file as PNG or TIFF instead of jpeg.
    Let me know if that helps.

  • Creating 2D Array with info from file and Saving it to a text file

    what im trying to do is take my nice little data structure and put it into a 2D array which i can copy and paste as code into my compiler... it takes TDPoints(like Point2D except has z value) which are in Faces(an arraylist of points, each face also has a color value), which are in objects(arraylist of faces, + other attributes)
    for my sake im only working with one object, here is my code:
         private void saveArrayToTXT(String name) throws IOException
              double X;
              double Y;
              double Z;
              FileOutputStream xos = new FileOutputStream("C:/Program Files/Xinox Software/JCreatorV3LE/MyProjects/ThreeDRemake/Files/" + name + ".txt");
              DataOutputStream fos = new DataOutputStream(xos);//ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(fos);
              //oos.writeObject(myObject);
              //for(int ob = 0; ob < ((ArrayList)myObject).size(); ob++)
                        ThreeDObject object = (ThreeDObject)(((ArrayList)myObject).get(0));
                        fos.writeChars("{");
                        for(int shape = 0; shape < object.getFaces().size(); shape++)
                             fos.writeChars("{");
                             ArrayList faces = object.getFaces();
                             for(int count = 0; count < ((Face)(faces.get(shape))).getPoints().size(); count++)
                                  X = ((TDPoint)(((Face)(faces.get(shape))).getPoints().get(count))).getX();
                                  Y = ((TDPoint)(((Face)(faces.get(shape))).getPoints().get(count))).getY();
                                 Z = ((TDPoint)(((Face)(faces.get(shape))).getPoints().get(count))).getZ();
                                   fos.writeChars("" + (int)X);
                                   fos.writeChars(",");

                                   if(count != ((Face)(faces.get(shape))).getPoints().size()-1)
                                   fos.writeChars(",");
                                   if((count == ((Face)(faces.get(shape))).getPoints().size()-1) && (count < 5))

                              fos.writeChars("}");
                         fos.writeChars("}");
              fos.close();
              xos.close();
         } i happen to know for a fact that there are no faces with more than 6 points, so i used this line:if((count == ((Face)(faces.get(shape))).getPoints().size()-1) && (count < 5))and everything that follows to write ditto information(the last point) over and over again to fill up the array(i could even write a null value here if i wanted)
    the problem im having is i seem to be missing two right brackets("}") and with all the information thats going through these loops its impossible to trace where and what is going wrong. can anyone point out any possible flaws to help me figure out what im doing wrong??

    also, though its not important, when i do:fos.writeChars("...")//(i used writeChars(); to save myself the hassle of typeing writeChar((int)'char').)it writes a blankspace(spacebar) between each string i write, how can i prevent this from happening?

    nvm i just realized what i was doing wrong... fixed the error, but a reply on the spaces between writes would be nice

    You asked this same question a couple of months ago: http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Reading-Data-From-text-File/m-p/1756390#M612805
    Well, you can use the Read Text file to read the file, and then just extract the lines... Ben64 showed you a method to use regular expressions. That's one way.
    For Excel you can use the Report Generation Toolkit, or you can code it yourself using ActiveX. There's an example that ships with LabVIEW on writing a table to Excel.
    For database operations you can use the Database Toolkit, or you can try to use LabSQL.

  • Photoshop CC: Have a template that I moved image into.  Image is too small.  How do I resize the image while in the template?  Or must I go to original image file and resize there again and again until I get the right fit?

    I have a template that I am able to plug different pictures into at different times.  The problem is that when I plug an image into that template, I find that the image is either too big or too small.  Is there a way to plug the image into the template and resize the image (and not the template itself) OR will I have to go to the file with the original image and resize it there and then try to plug it in to the template to see if it fits------and if it does not fit, go back to the original file with the image and resize it again and see if that fits---and so on and so on...........?  I have tried the" image size" option but it's hit or miss------mostly miss!
    Thanks!

    Read up on Smart Objects. It looks like you have no idea as to how to create and use them.
    Jut create a Smart Object from the layer containing whatever it image it is that you are "plugging into your template".  But you do need to learn the application at its most basic levels.
    Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its very long and steep learning curve.  You cannot learn Photoshop in a forum, one question at a time.
    Or is it possible that you don't even have Photoshop proper but the stripped-down Photoshop Elements?"
    If the latter is the case, you're in the wrong forum.  This is not the Elements forum.
    Here's the link to the forum you would want if you're working in Elements.:
    https://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements/content
    If you do have Photoshop proper, please provide the exact version number of that application and of your OS.

  • How can I edit a mp3 file and drop it in an iMovie project?

    I wish to edit an mp3 music file so that I can drop a piece of it into an iMovie project. iMovie's audio tools are very rudimentary---one can reposition a music file, shorten it, etc but cannot pick a piece of it to complement a movie segment.
    So I dropped the mp3 file into GarageBand. I deleted the first section of the song, then selected the 16 second piece I wanted to include in my iMovie, using the copy command. Then I pasted the piece into a new GarageBand project screen. The piece wouldn't play, and when I selected "export" the piece neatly went to where I wanted it, but again with no sound.
    So simply: how do I edit an mp3 file (cutting a piece of it) and then save it so I can apply it to an iMovie? Help!

    it should have played, but you can do it easier by exporting just the section you want:

  • InDesign CC won't save after working on file and saving.

    I am really getting tired of resetting the preferences in InDesign CC when it stops SAVING or SAVING AS. This occurs after working and saving on an InDesign file - then all of a sudden it will not save or save as. There is no pattern so I never know when this will happen. I called support and they suggested restarting and resetting the preferences. I have done this multiple times.
    This is frustrating. I have to open my file and determine the work that I did but did not save, and do it again. What a waste of time.
