Editing a film with IMOVIE and create a DVD memu with IDVD

Dear all,
I edited a film with Imovie (with music, picture effects...). Now I try to create a DVD memu with IDV. For example, for a trip, I want to create a main menu (Australia) and sub menus (Sydney, Red center...). With this sub menu I want to attach some specifics sequences of my film edited with IMovie.
I export the film from Imovie but when I try to use it with IDVD I have only one file. So I cannot create a menu and chose different sequence.
Could you please explain to me how to obtain sequences edited on IDVD. I can see some sequences on IDVD but it is the uncut movie.

I had the same question about iMovie'08 a few days ago. You need to add the chapters outside iMovie'08. I found this freeware at http://www.applesolutions.com/bantha/MH.html and it worked well for me.
Basically it opens your movie file exported from iMovie. You select manually the location of each chapter, then save the file again. When you drop this new file onto iDVD, the expected PLAY and Scene Selection buttons appear as expected. The instructions on the site are easy to follow.
Alternatively, there is a also a separate hack to edit the ProjectData file located inside the iDVD project package, but this did not work properly for me. I have not tried the GarageBand hint.

You burn the DVD selecting Burn in iDVD.

Of course this assumes that you actually have iDVD, as it is no longer included in new Macs running Lion:

  • I produced a film in iMovie and send it to iDVD to make a DVD with a theme. When everything was ready it starts at my mac-computer. But at the TV the theme always comes at the end of the film not at the beginning. What have I to change, what´s wrong?

I produced a film in imovie and send it to idvd to make a dvd with a theme. After finishing all the dvd starts in my mac-computer and first comes the theme and then the film.
But when I start it with a dvd-recorder at tv first the film comes an at the end of the film the theme comes. What did I wrong? Where is my mistake?

    Hi
    A. Do not Use - Share to iDVD - in any iMovie version at all !
    B. Start a BRAND NEW iDVD project
    C. in iMovie'08 to 11 -  Share to Media Browser and as LARGE - NOT HD or other resolution as quality will be even worse
    - in iMovie HD6 - just close it and from within iDVD import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it)
    - FinalCut - Export as QuickTime Movie - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - AT ALL !
    D. When in iDVD - see to that in the Lay-out menu (when it looks like a box-plott) there ARE NOTHING in the upper left most box (Auto Start box). As this overruns any Menu.
    E. Save as a DiskImage - TEST this first - befor burning any DVDs

  • Copying home DVD videos, editing, and creating new DVDs

    Here is the situation:
I have the 17" and this is my first Mac to own. I am computer literate with most my experience on Windows and Linux.
That being said, I am trying to edit home videos; but they are already on DVDs. I got a LiteOn DVD/VCR combo recorder for my entertainment center. I have a camcorder that uses Hi-8 media and it is only able to use S-video/composite outputs (no USB or Firewire). I am using the LiteOn recorder to archive all my videos to DVDs because it has composite inputs. The LiteON has hardly any editing capability. So I want to take the "simple" DVDs I made, copy them to my HD, edit them (to cut out junk, create better menus, and give it as nice touch), and create new DVDs to distribute to my family and to get rid of old tapes.
So in short, the process I want to do on the Mac is:
    1. Copy my family home DVDs
    2. Edit the video.
    3. Create more "creative" DVDs for my family.
I have been looking around the website and reading posts and I don't see how to do this. I did try to create an image on disk utility, but it failed for whatever reason (maybe I am missing a step). How can I accomplish the three steps above?
    Please help.
    Thank you, Michael

If these are true, standard video DVDs that the drive creates, there are a number of utilities that can extract and convert the videos for use in editing applications. A couple of utilities that people have reported success with are DVDxDV, Cinematize, and MPEG Streamclip (MPEG Streamclip is freeware but requires that you have Apple's QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component), and there are no doubt others.
Once extracted, you can use iMovie to edit the clips and iDVD to burn them to a new DVD. Then you can use Disk Image or a third-party application such as Roxio's Popcorn to make additional copies.
    Hope this helps.

  • I shared a movie in iMovie and created a file with the movie but then now I cannot go back in and find the original version to make future edits. What am I missing here? how do i go back and edit the original?

Hi! I need help! I created an imovie and then shared it and cannot go back in and edit the roigianl now. I am new to Imovie and am trying to figure this out quickly as i have to get this done by tonight. Thank you

You might try using the add-on 'NoSquint' which allows numerous zoom options specific to each page you visit & keeps your settings - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nosquint/
If you want to go back to 3.6x, you will find it here:
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
In most cases you can simply "upgrade" (meaning downgrade) directly from the installation. It would be a good idea to save your passwords & bookmarks just to be on the safe side.

  • Imovie '08 create a dvd

I have a 1 hour movie in imovie '08 and am trying to create a dvd in idvd. I tried creating a quicktime movie and a large movie as recommended. After 4 hours both screens told me I had 1200 minutes left and the time kept growing. Can anyone tell me how to burn a 1 hour movie from imovie '08 to a dvd?Thank You,
    Steve

Choose share and media browser, once this is complete open iDVD 08 and you will see your movie in the media browser, you can then use it with iDVD 08 to make your DVD.
If you like to make DVDs, give iMovie 06 a try.
I use both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06, if I want to make a DVD I prefer iMovie 06. iMovie 08 is not as DVD friendly as iMovie 06.
iMovie 08 has replaced "Share to iDVD" with "Share to media browser". Also iMovie 08 cannot set chapter markers, this has to be done with another program.
When using iMovie 06, one mouse click will set a chapter marker EXACTLY where you specify. In just a few seconds set all your chapter markers. When you are done editing just "share to iDVD 08" and all of your chapter markers will be there!
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

  • Multiple Songs in iMovie and making the DVD

I just tried to make the DVD from my iMovie, and the second song that I have did not play ?
Am I doing something wrong ?
    Thanx.

Share>Create DVD  produces disks that most people are happy with aside from the sparton menus.
The Compressor to DVD Studio Pro workflow provides greater control over both menus, content and the quality of the DVD. One of the benefits of using DVD STudio Pro is that it allows you to test short sections of your movie, make adjustments in the Encoder settings and Frame Controls and evaluate the effects on image quality.
What kind of video are you having poor results with…progressive or interlaced? Or both?

  • Copy Protect when I try and create a DVD

Help please. I created a movie using FCE 1.0. I then "printed to video" to capture the final movie on a Sony Hi8 Camcorder with Firewire. I then tried to create a DVD by connecting the camcorder to a Philips DVD Recorder using the standard RCA jacks. The recorder shows the message "Copy Protected" and will not record the movie. Is this a setting within FCE or the content?
    Help!

Really not sure about this, but I doubt it's anything to do with FCE. Is it some copy protection built into the DVD recorder? I.e to stop you copying DVDs. Does the DVD Recorder normally work with this jacks? Is there any other way to connect to the recorder?

  • Saving an iMovie and Burning a DVD

I'm pretty new at this. Have only had my iMac 2 months but have done remarkably well (and am taking classes). I'm confused about saving a project. Once I make a movie in iMovie and I want to burn a DVD....what do I do? I know I click "share" and one of my Apple trainers said to then click "media browser" but a book I have says to click "iDVD". Can I click Media Browser and then what do I do to burn the dvd???? Seems like there are alot of ways to do everything. Help. I'm dying to burn my Visit to Washington Movie but I'm not sure what to click on!

    Hi
You need a book - The Missing Manual of iMovie 09 and iDVD by David Pogue
    Love it.
Export/Share to iDVD - referes to iMovie up to HD6 (previous versions)
Now You do - as suggested - Export to Media browser
    Close iMovie
    Open iDVD
    Here import from Media Browser
Select encoding quality - I love Pro Quality (but takes abot double time)
(My Mac 1 hour movie - takes about 2.30h to be done)
    Burn
(I usually make a DiskImage first (File and down to Save as a DiskImage) and test
this with the DVD-player tool in my Mac - just to see that everything is OK)

  • How do you burn an iMovie project to a DVD without using iDVD themes?

I created a presentation (slide show with music) in iMovie and need to burn it to a DVD.  When I pull it into iDVD, it forces me to pick a theme which puts more music in.  I just want it the way I have it in iMovie!  How do I do that?

    (From fellow poster Mishmumken: )
How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
    1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:
    http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html
Our resident expert, Old Toad, also recommends this: there is a 3rd export/share option that give better results.  That's to use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option.  Then in iDVD go to the Media Browser and drag the movie into iDVD where you want it.
    Hope this helps!

  • Created imovie and shared media. Now in IDVD and my chapters are not showing.

created imovie with chapters.  Now in idvd and my chapters don't show up.

Your tags show that you are using iMovie '08. From memory (and I may be wrong), this version didn't have a chapter marker feature. I believe users were advised to use GarageBand for inserting chapters, then exporting to iDVD.
How did you set up the chapters?
EDIT: One other point - perhaps you are using iMovie '11 (or '09) and you have used Comment Markers - not Chapter Markers? They are side-by-side on the far right of the Project window.

  • I am trying to edit a video in iMovie and I keep losing sound..

When I tap the spacebar and play, the audio is there, the video plays fine by itself in and out of iMovie. But when I go to edit, or crop/cut out a part, I can't hear any audio, which basically defeats the pupose of editing the project. What am I doing wrong? Why is my computer doing this? I've restarted iMovie, it doesn't help. This happened a week ago and not even restarting the computer helped. My computer is a MacBook, version 10.6.8, Capacity 500gb, Available 317gb, Format Mac OS Extended and I am using iMovie '11. Thanks for any help you can provide. This is driving me bonkers.

  • Want to burn iMovie to external LaCie DVD+RW

there must be a better way! no super drive but yes toast 6 titanium----Will toast compress or even handle a 12 gig iMovie and create a DVD? And why won't toast except ALL the files in iMovie. AND, is there a way to burn iDVD to my LaCie external? If so how do I save the iDVD file and export it to toast? iDVD seems to want to freez up when finished with the making of the DVD and there's no 'save as' in the menu and so on....
Is there a way to compress iMovie? (quick time?)
    thanks

there's no 'save as' in the menu and so on....
There is "Save as Disk Image" in the iDVD file menu. This will make a disk image that you can burn with Toast 6.
iDVD seems to want to freez up when finished with the making of the DVD
Is this during audio encoding? If so be patient and wait wait wait wait for iDVD to finish.
