Editing a HD movie in MBP

Hi
I will be traveling soon and would like to edit my video project on my MacBook Pro. Will I lose any quality of a HD movie (AVCHD) format if I edit it on my MBP (2.5 ghz intel core 2 duo, 4 gig 667RAM, 250gig HD 5400rpm)? or should I wait to do it on my Mac Pro. Would it be a problem to edit on my MBP and then upload to my MacPro for final editing/burning?
Thanks for your help!

It won't loose quality if you capture and edit on your macbook pro. The only problem that you MIGHT incur would be a lack of space. So just make sure you have plenty of room on your hard drive or an external before you start capturing. As for transferring your work to the mac pro for final editing; that shouldn't be a problem.. you should be able to export your work as an xml file and put it on a medium to bring it on to your mac pro to edit some more.

    I have a revision a imac g5 with the same problem with only macbreak podcast. I know leo laporte said that the podcast was done in 1080p and my computer with its built in 64 megabyte graphics card might have trouble with this podcast but your machine must have a better graphics card than mine. 1080p requires at least 128 megabytes of graphics memory built in. My machine played this podcast on quicktime fine until they came out with the update to quicktime last week or two ago. I was going to upgrade my memory until I came accross your story and your machines doing the same thing with much better specs. I think it might be the quicktime update that is causing a problem. Maybe Leo will talk about this problem since he is doing a mac show about macs.

  • I am trying to edit a home movie on iMovies but when I try to download the movie from a dvd a message comes up saying there are no importable files. The DVD is the last in a series of 5 and the others have downloaded without any difficulty.Help?

    I am trying to edit a home movie on iMovies on a mac book air. The movie is on a dvd but when I try to import the movie onto iMovies I get a message saying there are no importable files. I've downloaded the macx converter software but I can't seem to download the movie into that either.

    Chris , thanks for the prompt reply. The dvd was produced by a third party that I found on line . I had a number of old mini digital video cassettes from a Sony Handycam. I can play the DVD's on my laptop but I can't edit them on iMovies to delete a lot of the rubbish on them. I have five DVD's and three downloaded without any problem but the last two are according to iMovies non importable.

  • PE-10 Cannot hear sound files in preview, editing, or final movie. Works fine outside PE-10.

    While editing a movie, the sound attached to video files plays fine. When I import other sound files (such as wav files), they will not play in the preview, editing, or final movie. I've tested the files to make sure they are fine (yes).
    I've tried them in each audio/sound section and they won't play anywhere. I've checked setting to make sure audio is enabled.
    Please help. I assume something is not set correctly.

    Well, if you've got Audacity, you can make them good!
    Just Export your file as a new WAV file. Audacity will output the new file with specs that Premiere Elements can work with!

  • Quick Time 7 Pro unusable to edit Q.T. movie

    Apple is no help whatsoever. Response i a form letter over and over again. The Key exist against pirating but in fact prevent legitimate user like me from using the software. Over the years I purchased 4 keys because they did not work. Never a refund. Unbelievable! Apple user friendly? Think again!
    Editing functions are grey. Registration says it is Quick Time Pro. 3 days later and I can't use the software anymore. I use Q.T. maybe once a year. Every time the same problem. I suspect that each time an upgrade comes up it screws up Q.T. Pro.
    I have been an Apple fanatic ever since the Apple II. I am now disgusted!
    Apple should have a look at El Gato's EyeTV to learn how video software should work. Yak!

    Registration says it is
    Quick Time Pro. 3 days later and I can't use the

    If your key was for QT 6 and you have since installed QT 7 then you do need a new key. I know that it is tough but I consider the H264 in Qt 7 worth it.
    If the info still says that QT pro is enabled then there may be other issues. What exactly are you trying to do?
    If all you want is to export a file once in a long while, consider the export function of toast - which you may have already, mpeg streamclip (free), isquint (free ipod format only) or visualHub (cheap)
    If you want to edit a QT movie then you could use imovie. I think that it can use a number of formats other than just dv.
    Personally I would not be without QT pro.

  • Is there any way to edit a finished movie on imovie?

    I was editing a video and it froze so i decided to save it to my theater. I found out I could add it to a new one but I'm not able to edit it. If anyone knows how to edit the movie that would be great. It is saved on my theater and iCloud. I need it by tomorrow. Thank you so much!
    I have the iMovie that comes with the most recent mac book pro.

    The easiest way to edit an existing movie is to go back to that movie's Project, make your changes and then re-make the movie. I think you can also import an already existing movie (File>Import Media...) but I would do that only as a last resort, like if you have thrown away the movie's Project.

  • Ripping home movies on MBP to edit them

    what ripping program do i need to use in order to put home movies on laptop and edit them. My daughter is a junior in high school and I would like to make a highlight dvd for recruiting purposes. I have a MBP 15 inch using 10.6.6

    A lot depends on your level of technical expertise.
    MPEG-Streamclip (with the $20 Apple MPG-2 Component) works well but is very 'techie'..
    The commercial DVDxDV is more expensive, but more user friendly. It's at http://www.dvdxdv.com/ and has a watermarked demo mode you can try to make sure it does what you want.

  • Editing (cut/paste/move) more than one track at a time

    i'm new to mac/garageband and everything is going great so far. i'm currently using my fostex hardisc recorder to record basic tracks and then dumping them into my imac as wave files. i'm currently trying to edit a drum track that requires editing all 8 channels of drums. i can't figure out how to use the cut and paste feature on 8 tracks at once. is this possible? i read up on shift clicking to select more than one region but it doesn't seem to apply to the tracks. any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum.
    If I'm understanding, you want to cut a part of the 8 drum tracks, copy it, and paste it to a different part, all in one go?
    If that's right, here's how you'd do it:
    1. Select the top most track of the drum tracks by hitting the track header. This will be relevant in the pasting part. By hitting the track header, it will select all the regions in that track.
    2. Either shift click all the regions you want to split, or you can rubberband-select them if you have blank space available to do it.
    3. put the SPL where you want to cut. Then hit "apple" "T". If you want to have an endpoint, move the SPL to the place you want and hit "apple" "T" again.
    4. Click on the background of the window to de-select all the regions. Then either rubberband-select all the newly cut regions, or use the **** click method. When they are all selected, hit "apple" "C".
    5. At this point, make sure that the top most drum track is selected again. Put the SPL at the beginning of the place you want to place and hit "apple" "V".
    Hope that helps.

  • How do i edit a home movie on a DVD?

    I just paid to have some home movies converted from VHS to DVD.  I loaded the DVD into my computer, expecting iMovie or iDVD to be able to allow me to basically edit the movies.  I learned that that's impossible without first downloading MPEG Streamclip which I did.  Then I learned that I still can't proceed without also paying $20+ for MPEG-2 Playback Component.  Apple says that Playback Component is not required with Lion, which I have.  But elsewhere, I read that I do need it.  Worse, most of the reviews say that it doesn't work, that there is no audio.  I don't have $20 to throw away.  And I'm not sure that, even if I did install Playback Component, that I'd have video, because I don't have it now.  Am I missing something here?  Is it true that iMovie won't import a video from a DVD that I can watch on the same computer, but it will import a movie from a camera?  (I don't have a camera.)  So: why am I not getting video, let alone not getting  audio?  And what can I do to edit a movie that's on an unprotected DVD?  Thanks.

    Hi aa,
    dvd is end of the road, DVD uses a compressor (mpeg2) not meant for further processing..
    Handbrake converts into mpeg4, another lossy compressor (not meant for editing...), which needs to be converted AGAIN for usage in iM...
    I would do....
    get for 20$ the Apple mpeg2 plugin
    and for free the tool Streamclip for converting mp1/2/4, divx, avi, vob...
    (with that combo you can NOT override copyprotection mechanisms! ... )
    other tools are:
    * DVDxDV, it has a 30d trial period (testdrive sets a watermark)... and cost 25$
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in

    http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6018.shtml
    or connect Your Camera to a DVD-player and copy to tape or import trough if Your Camera handles that..
    DVDxDV is a very good "beginner's tool", one-click-only + try out...

  • Editing quick time movie clips with sound

    We are editing together some quick time movie clips but we can't get the sound to come up.
    Is there something we are doing wrong? Can you split the voice from the visual when you bring these clips into Final Cut?

    A QuickTime movie can be made from any number of codecs. Which one are you working with?
    If it's an MPEG video, chances are it will need to be demuxed. You can use MPEG Streamclip for this and other conversions.

  • For video editing, is the new 13" MBP enough? Or should I go for 15"?

    For video editing, I will be using both Final Cut Pro 7, and Adobe CS5.
    Is the new 13" Macbook Pro enough? I'm asking both for the lower-end and higher-end 13". Or should I just go with the 15"?
    I'm just seeking for opinions from more experienced mac users, since this is my first transfer from Windows to Mac. Also, I'm taking into consideration in the price difference among these different models.
    Thank you very much

    It will render much faster on the new quad cores then any other MBP ever made. This new release is really a pretty major deal in the laptop world to my thinking. If I didn't just get a new iMac, I would be probably getting one. I don't do a lot of video and I use FCE not Pro so my need isn't as great, but I do a lot of photography and with several things open at once so the power matched with sufficient ram is pretty amazing. But is it absolutely a must? I had a friend who just until this year was a film music editor and he was using Pro Tools on a G4 Power Book though he had to start working around the machine limitations at the end of the day, but it is possible. Still for the money, the new machines are a great deal at pretty much the same price as what they are replacing. I know I'm advocating here, but I'm just a user not and employee:)

  • Editing a DVD movie

    Newbie-sorry.
    I recorded a movie from satellite, burned a DVD. I now want to edit out the commercials and junk after the movie. I bought my Imac 24 3 weeks ago. I have Imovie HD etc. Will someone please tell me how to edit this movie. I have copied the movie to my desktop. Standard Video_TS and Video_RM. I don't know which to use, probably Video_TS. Any help would be appriciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    welcome checkmate to the  boards of discussions...
    DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
    for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (29$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
    non of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • All media files lost from folder while editing! Entire movie now gone HELP!

    After a dozen painstaking hours of editing a movie (iMovie 3.0.3) on my iMac G4 with OS 10.2.8, all of my media files mysteriously vanished from the media folder. The trash is empty both in iMovie and in my desktop trash. Files nowhere to be found. They were there one second... the next, gone!
    I was undoing a transition deletion at the time and may have hit command-x instead of command-z or some other crazy key combo. I have no idea how this happened of what happened for that matter. I need these files! Can they be recovered somehow? My available disc space has changed to about 5GB more. I quit out of iMovie hoping to not save these changes to no avail.
    Is there a utility that can recover lost files? I'm not too knowledgable in this department. YIKES! Has this happened before to anyone?

    I'm afraid the news isn't good, truegrit.
    Older versions of iMovie had a bug that could delete all the clips in the Media folder, causing the loss of everything. That may have happened to your project.
    If it helps, it's probably not something you did. That version of iMovie did it on its own. It can follow emptying the iMovie trash.
    Emptying the iMovie trash could cause lots of different problems; that was the worst of several. Fortunately, iMovie 5 and iMovie 6 do not have this bug.

  • Adding editable region tags moves my content in non-editable regions

    I have a template based on a template (the first with my navigation, and the second is based on the first with a sidebar added). When I add an editable region to the second template, it moves my sidebar down to leave a gap between the nav bar and the top of the sidebar. On the second template I want to add editable regions to the content area and to the sidebar. Even if I don't add any content to the editable reagions and just place the editable regions tags, my sidebar still moves down. I have tried adding two seperate editable regions and also adding one large editable region covering the content area and sidebar and the sidebar moved both times. My content area is a div floated left and the sidebar is a div floated right.
    I don't understand why anything is moving when I am only adding tags to make an area editable

    Do you have a container that the two divs are in and if so, are you clearing the floats? It's hard to give an answer without seeing the problem page.
