Editing a layer's out point in time without affecting in point??

I'm really embarrassed about this... I certainly USED to know how to do it... and I've searched for the answer, and I thought it was going to be easy to find, and it wasn't...
Anyway. I need to edit a layer's OUT point without affecting the location of the IN point in the composition. [ is working fine for the in point. Then, pressing ]... The entire layer slides to the left so that the out point is there, all right, but the in point has now moved the other way so that it's gone back in time. I want the out point to TRIM the (text) layer and make it shorter, not slide it around so that it's the same length and all it's done is to move.
The text layers will overlap each other, but the thing is that they're of varying lengths
(It's AE 5.1, btw...)
I just KNOW there's an easy way to do this. And everyone here is so smart!

alt/option + ] for out point
alt/option + [ for in point
Just position the CTI and press the keys.

  • Advanced edit hyperlink-properties grayed out the first time

    advanced edit hyperlink-properties grayed out the first time
    Sub Problem:
    When using the advanced edit cursor, right click Is used to select a hyperlink-properties the first time the dialog box pops up it does not have “focus” (not sure that is the right term, but the box is grayed out and will not respond to the keyboard.). It must be mouse clicked to get focus. The second time a link is right clicked to properties the popup responds to the key board and will move to the action tab with ctrl-tab
    It’s not clear to me where the acrobat program is at that point.
    Is that a known action or problem with acrobat pro 9.4.4?
    Is there a key or keys from the keyboard that can force focus to the box?
    The problem is each file I open I have to manually find a link and right click it to get the box then click in the box to get “focus”. After the first one the box pops up with focus.

    Main Problem:
    I have been working on converting a set of pdf files with 1000’s of hyperlinks like www.site.com\folder1\file1.pdf#page=10
    To jump to a local copy of the files with a relative type link
    ../folder1/file1.pdf and then go to the proper page.
    I have found that it can be done manually by changing the hyperlink to a javascript
    var otherDoc = app.openDoc('../folder1/file1.pdf', this);otherDoc.pageNum = 10 - 1;
    and setting each destination file with a disclose()=true;
    Based on the help so far that java script cannot access the hyperlink value in a link
    See: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1039908?tstart=60
    I have resorted to the following plan using acrobat javascript, an external keyboard macro recorder and excel in combination to get around the problem
    Four folder level acrobat javascripts with “buttons”
    One to get all the link quads in an array, in the pdf and report the total number
    The second creates a form field in the far corner of the first page and moves there.
    The third jumps to each link found by creating a form field just to the left of the link and zooms in so it can be selected by a “mouse click” from the keyboard macro recorder
    The forth deletes the form field
    The keyboard macro recorder runs javascript 2 and then 3 then clicks on the link just to the right of the middle of the screen and uses keys to get to the advanced editing to get to edit the hyperlink .
    The hyperlink is then copied to excel where it is converted using string functions to the needed javascript text to be copied back.
    To the acrobat file into a java script (after deleting the hyperlink)
    Rinse/lather/repeat
    I have been able to convert about 150 links an hour.
    Better then hand typing, but not like having java access to the links.
    I am looking to improve the solution

    Rick,
    I didn't intend to say you must close the X box after each
    apply. It's OK to apply one change and go to another item before
    closing the dialogue. It's the OK button that messes up sometimes.
    Even when you hit the Apply button for a very large selection
    of topics, the OK button sometimes will undo the apply, not
    necessarily for all selected topics. Even when you've made just one
    batch change.
    I think it's because OK tries to re-set all settings (that's
    why it takes forever), but does not correctly pick up the mass
    changes previously applied. Or maybe it takes forever because it
    can't find the new info and defaults to the existing settings.
    A pain in the butt when you're trying to apply a stylesheet
    to a very large number of topics. Please don't ask me to define "a
    large number."
    Maybe it's a space limit in RH, similar to the space limit
    for the number of characters in a batch of file names you want to
    import. Or maybe the OK button doesn't look in the right places.

  • How to replace a layer which has a mask applied without affecting the mask?

    I have a layer with a photo.  I have animated a mask on this layer, but now the client wants the photo replaced with another one.  When I add a new photo to a new layer and copy the mask properties from the good working layer, the mask winds up in a different place than the original.  I've tried doing a replace footage with the source photo trying to make it the new photo but same results, the mask always gets repositioned.
    How can I replace an image on a layer that has an animated mask on it with another one without affecting the mask?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Thanks everyone.  Now that I understand more about Track Mattes it works fine.  I can scale and position new layers under the animated mask.  This helps tremendously

  • How to enable a custom web part class file to be refreshed at regular interval of time, without affecting the entire page where its placed.

    Hi,
    I am calling a web service in the web part class file where it gets the data. I need to call the service at regular intervals of time which is in the web part, is there a way to get the web part refreshed automatically at certain intervals of time.
    Rayudu

    You can use Ajax for automatic refreshing.
    Add a timer control into an Ajax Update panel within your custom web part and execute your code to refresh the field values within the Timer_Tick() event.
    You can also control the timer interval to 10 minutes or so using the Timer.Interval property.
    This will always enable your page to remain with only the web parts getting refreshed.
    I just found
    a blog post which describes this in detail with screenshots.

  • Ignore Source Out Point

    Maybe I'm just having one of those mornings, but I can't seem to figure out how to get Premiere to Ignore the out point on my source clip (in a 4 point edit).
    I see in the manual (I even looked in the manual!) that I should be able to select that option, but the problem is I am never presented with the option. It's possible I clicked a "Never show this again" type checkbox, and if I did, how do I get these choices back:
    If the marked source and program durations differ, select an option when prompted:
    Change Clip Speed (Fit to Fill) Maintains the source clip’s In and Out points, but changes the clip’s speed so that its duration matches the duration determined by the sequence In and Out points.
    Trim Clip’s Head (Left Side) Automatically changes the source clip’s In point so that its duration matches the duration determined by the sequence In and Out points.
    Trim Clip’s Tail (Right Side) Automatically changes the source clip’s Out point so that its duration matches the duration determined by the sequence In and Out points.
    Ignore Sequence In Point Disregards the sequence In point you set, and performs a three-point edit.
    Ignore Sequence Out Point Disregards the sequence Out point you set, and performs a three-point edit.

    I've struggled with this function for weeks - I couldn't figure out how to change it!  Just today I spent 10 minutes tracking it down as it was driving me insane that my source clip out points were taking priority over the out point I set in the timeline.  I think part of the problem lies in some of the nomenclature surrounding this feature.  First of all just to find the preference, its named Fit Clip and what I'm trying to accomplish has nothing to do with "fit to fill" - fit-to-fill is a speed function, not an edit/overwrite function - but it's labeled as "Fit Clip" in preferences.  Then in the resulting dialog that controls this functionality we're presented with the fit-to-fill function as well as options to control in/out point priority but with confusing descriptors 'trim' as well as 'ignore' for essentially the same functionality.  Ignore is probably the most accurate of the two, but using trim here is absolutely wrong.  Trim to an editor is a specific function not related to overwrite editing with in/out points (or a speed change like fit-to-fill).  So why is 'trim' being used to describe what is essentially edit point priority?  And why is a speed change function (albeit one induced by an overwrite edit) lumped into the same dialog?
    My solution: make the fit-to-fill functionality a keyboard modifier, like option or shift while dragging from the bin or invoking the Overwrite function.  Then change the nomenclature surrounding the Fit Clip dialog: remove the fit-to-fill option, remove all references to 'trim' in the dialog and rename the 4-point edit functionality to edit point priority.

There are N number of users who have issued sql queries, out of which few users have disconnected and few user are still connected to the database(I need to consider all sessions). You don't run statspack for 24 hours, that would infact be pointless...
    Run statspack for say a 10 or 15 minute window during a particular "busy" period on your database. If you run it for longer then all the useful data will have been "averaged out". You want a snapshot in time, not an average over the day.

  • Can I control the in and out point of a layer with a keyframe?

    Hi all, I'm working in a sort of template for a series of mograph videos. Some sort of motion typography work.
    The animation is always the same but the only thing that changes is the length of the video (for legibility purposes).
    I was wondering if I can control the in and out points of a layer with the keyframes from another layer.
    Lets say Layer's A keyframe from slider 1 position in time is the out point (plus/minus an offset would be also great) of layer B.
    I've been playing with expressions on a regular basis but I don't really know where and how to write an expression like that or if it's possible.
    Thanks in advance

    This should probably be moved to the expression forum then.
    I'm not sure I understood the details of your project but here's a basis: you can do that with an expression in the layer's time remapping property. So if you want a layer to start playing at the second keyframe on another layer, you can try something like (writing in my browser, watch for mistakes):
    //   The "number" of the keyframe (first, second, third, etc)
    var index = 2;
    //   The layer with the keyframes
    var l = {pick-whip the layer with keyframes here};
    //   Just a safety, check the layer has at least enough keyframes
    if (l.numKeys >= index)
         //   If yes, the new time is the difference between the keyframe's time and the current time
        max(0, l.key(index).time-time);
    else
         //   Doesn't matter, let's return 0
        0;

  • Insufficient content for edit, four point editing, ignore out point on source

    Hello folks,
    I'm a long time FCP 7 and Avid editor currently using 8.2 for two short form museum films and have been running into all sort of questions.  This one comes up multiple times a day.  I tried to search for this here but didn't find my exact issue or answers.
    I am trying to do a four point edit and I keep getting the "Insufficient Content for Edit" error.  My source is marked in and out for 5 sec and my timeline in and out is marked for 8 sec.  Four points total.  I have already checked the Ignore Source Out point in the Fit Clip window and have checked the "Remember" box as well.  My source definitely have enough footage to fill the marked 8 sec in the timeline.  So why isn't PP ignoring the source out point when I commit the edit?  Of course, I works properly if I go to the Source window and remove the out point manually but that's a pain and shouldn't be the way.  Is PP not capable of this? or Am I doing something wrong?  What is the point of the "Ignore Source Out Point" if it doesn't apply to this very common situation?
    Thanks for any help you folks can offer.
    CHL

    I think I know what the issue is.
    When the Fit Clip dialog opens for me and the source is shorter than the destination, "Ignore Source In Point" and "Ignore Source Out Point" are grayed out. In other words, when the source is shorter than the destination, my only option is to ignore sequence in or out points.
    If my source is longer than my destination then it allows me to check ignore source in or out. However, if I have Premiere remember this choice, when I try to insert a source clip that is shorter than the destination, I get the error that you get.
    It's obviously a terrible setup and shouldn't be like this, but that's why it's happening.

  • Where's can I see the in/out point times?

    I'm combining lots of clips from different films into one and because the audio levels are different in each clip, I've extracted the audio from the clips, applied mp3gain to them and inserted them into the timeline below the corresponding video clip. Of course I would like to set the in and out points of these audio clips to the same values as the video, but I don't know an easy way to see the in and out point times.
    If I double click the video (i.e. open it int the preview window) I can scrub the timeline and see where the in point is, but it's not very precise and I'd like this to be exact.
    So, all this just to ask: how can I find out the exact in/out point of a clip in the timeline?

    For what you are wishing to do, I would strongly recommend using the Audio Mixer. It is great for doing exactly what you want, and will "automate" the changes via Track Keyframes.
    I do this as about the very last process in my editing, as I want to make sure that I have all of my cuts set. Actually, any Audio work is at the end of my workflow. Once my edits are visually where and how I want them, I fire up Audio Mixer. If I have several Audio Tracks, such as Narration and Soundtrack, I Mute these, and begin "riding gain," or "potting" as I play the movie and listen very closely with a set of good headphones. As the movie plays, I adjust the Gain to exactly what I want for that entire Audio Track. Because PE lays down Keyframes on the Audio Track, you can go back and basically re-record your changes to a particular area. It's much simpler in PE, than in PrPro's Audio Mixer, though the latter does allow more "power." When I am done with my dialogue Track, I leave it on as a reference, and then un-Mute my Narration, adjusting it as is needed. Last, I'll leave both of those on and address the Soundtrack the same way. Once done, you can then play the whole thing with the Audio Mixer open and watch the "pot" for the Gain move in each Audio Track automatically.
    The main reason for doing this as the last step in the editing workflow is because the Keyframes are on the Audio Track(s) and NOT on the Clips. If you go to edit the Clips, changing their Duration, etc., you would need to clear your Track Keyframes and start over, or the adjustments will no longer be correct.
    This is basically how it's done in Hollywood.
    Good luck, and don't forget a good set of headphones to really be able to listen closely. I don't work with a lot of meter settings, other than watching out for Clipping, but instead listen to the piece and to my changes to it.

  • CS6: exporting "range of time markers" without setting in-/out point or defining working area?

    Hi,
    in CS6 I defined several "range of time markers" to get a better overview of my project. Now I want to export each range as a single video.
    The only way to do this is  creating in-/out points  or setting the working area (what is the English translation for "Arbeitsbereichsleiste" (German)...?)?
    Or is it possible to define this selections via the previous created range of time markers? That would be the easiest way...
    Thanks, Carlos

    For exporting chunks of the Timeline, I set a Work Area and then export. If you want to export between markers, that would be a feature request: http://www.adobe.com/go/wish

    Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

    FCP User Manual, page 798.
    You can condense multiple clips that are stacked above each other into a nest. The nest appears as a single clip in the Timeline. If you need to modify the individual clips inside after you have created the nest, it can be expanded again by double clicking it.

  • Editing In / Out Points in Audition Mac

    I just downloaded Audition beta for the Mac today.
    I do not want to use it for music. I want to edit a bunch of dialogue which is currently out of sequence, much the same way that I would assemble video sequences in Premiere.
    Is this possible, and if so, is there a tutorial available on editing in & out points, and bringing the clips into the timeline?
    Thanks!

    You're probably better off posting in the dedicated Mac Audition forum at http://forums.adobe.com/community/labs/audition since those of us here are PC users and therefore not involved in the beta test.  We can't guess how the new version of Audition differs from the one we use.
    I'd be surprised if there were formal tutorials available yet though.
    Good luck!

    Hey guys, I wrote a big long speech trying to be more clear and was just getting more confusing. LOL
    Hopefully this image makes my question a bit easier to understand. In green you can see how the up and down arrow keys land while in Final Cut. In red how they land while in Premiere. I'd like them to land like Final Cut. Thanks!
