Editing a music track to fit movie

I have selected a music track from my iTunes library to back a short video in iMovie08. However whilst I can place the song anywhere in the movie, I'd like the song itself to start half way through the track, i.e. use the middle of the song to back the entire movie. Can I edit the song once imported? Thanks for any advice.

Here is a good Tutorial. You can change the start point by dragging the left handle, as shown in this Video Tutorial.
If you upgrade to iMovie 11 or even iMovie 09, there are additional ways to edit through the clip trimmer and the precision editor.

  • Editing to music track - possible to compile video non sequentially?

    Hello chaps.
I'm creating a family skiing video, editing it tightly to a music track - someone falling over hits the beat, etc. You know the drill.
I've run into one problem and I'm trying to work out if I'm missing something obvious, or whether it is a case of can't do that:
What I would like to do.
Rather that simply adding video sequentially from the beginning, there are certain clips that I know will fit well towards the end of the song. I'd like to place them there now. Continually editing from the front tends to lead to me using the best material at the beginning. Yes, I know I'm weak, but I'd like to place key anchor clips in first and then work around them with what's left.
    The problem
iMovie 11 mutes the sound track after the end of the last piece of video in the project - so there's no obvious way to add video later on in the track.
    What I've tried.
I've tried adding a single black clip that lasts the length of the track, but what I'd then like to do is be able to paste a clip to the playhead and have it replace that portion of the black clip. I can't quite work out how to do that, or if it is the correct approach. Placing the clip as a cut-away almosts works, but having the entire movie comprising cutaways is clearly silly.
    Am I missing something?
Does anyone have any advice as to a better or correct approach?

Bengt mentioned using dummy black photos (clips) as placeholders. Another option is to use the templates that are used in Trailers. These are located in the Map, Background & Animatic Browser (the last browser on the far right next to the Transition Browser). Apple calls these templates (or placeholders) "Animatics".
The animatics can be placed along the timeline with varying durations. Later, when adding an actual clip, drag and drop it directly onto one of the animatics. Select Replace from the pop-up menu. If the duration of the actual clip differs from the animatic, the clip's duration will over-ride the animatic's duration. So, it will be a little tricky lining it all up.
I haven't tried this personally, but it may work better than using Cutaways, but could be pretty tedious.
Bengt's assumption regarding Final Cut Pro X is correct - it will handle this type of thing easily. As I understand it, you can insert an audio track, then position video in appropriate places along the timeline without gaps closing up.

  • Placing video on a music track

I'm creating a music video to my own musical recording.  I've placed video satisfactorily for the first 30 seconds.  I then decided to place some video further down in the song, but when I bring it to the music track it automatically moves up against the first video piece.  Can't I place this video anywhere in the music track I wish without having to build the video exactly in linear order through the track?  Thanks for help.

No you can't, you have to fill the 'gaps' with something - for instance it can be a black background from "Backgrounds and maps"  if you just want to see a blank screen.

  • How do I adjust [shorten] music length to fit slideshow?

Making a memorial slideshow, hoping to use several songs but need to shorten their length. Any suggestions? iPhoto support directs me to a page that does not include the info.
    Thanks in advance.

I use music in all of my slideshows and always adjust it to my slides either by timing the individual slides or by using the third party application Amadeus to adjust the music, cutting out parts or pauses that I don't need or want. It can also slow down or speed up music without changing the pitch but I normally just edit the music itself to fit the projected length of the shows. That way I can match certain slides to particular phrases of the music and the effect is great that way. I've used Amadeus for years  and find that I can't do without it, especially in my more intricate shows. I believe I paid about 40 dollars back when I got it but don't know the price now. Incidentally I use the Amadeus Pro version. Here's the developer's site:

Check it out.= and good luck withyour project.

  • Difference - Background music AND an audio music track added to a clip ?

Working on a iMovie 08 project, just curious, what's the difference between:
    A. A soundtrack dragged from Media Browser/iTunes and dropped to the background canvas (project viewer) of a movie (resulting in a green/purple background) AND
    B. The same soundtrack added to the movie clips (as an audio track)?
I see that in both cases I can have the music start at a particular point of video. I can "pin" the audio to a particular place in the video (in the case of background music track) or simply move the horizontal audio track icon to any point of a movie clip (in the case of music being added as an audio track). So just curious if there are other considerations to this?
Is there an advantage of one over the other?
When exporting to iDVD are there any performance considerations/differences between the two?
Thanks for the help in advance!

Is the clip held in finder, iTunes, or in the iMovie/iLife clips section?

Ah yes school boy error there out of frustration and discontent..
My issue is with music/apps/films etc not downloading from iTunes / App Store.
They initially fail and message is displayed stating unable to download / purchase at this time, yet if I retry it says I've already purchased (?) or alternatively I go to the purchased section and there they are waiting with the cloud symbol..
However some items get frozen in the download window and cannot be retried or deleted. Message appears stating to tap to retry, but even if you stole every bath and sink in the uk you'd still not have enough taps.
I post here as the iTunes guys are useless in there 'help' and have only advised posting here or phoning apple, at my expense, to explain a problem that could be rectified by forwarding my original email to a techie. However the tech team apparently don't have an email address as they're from ye olde Middle Ages..!
    Anyways I digress.
So I tried sync to pc, but instead of showing the file as ready to listen/use/view, the iCloud symbol shows and I'm back to square one as the item is unable to download..
At frustration station waiting for a train from pain...
All my software is up to date, and had all worked fine prior to the last big iOS update that resulted in all the changes in display and dismay.

    Hi Brian,
Thanks restoring and restarting didn't fix my problem - i have started it fresh and still it doesn't work. Basically I press ONCE on the remote, after the machine has not had any commands for 10 minutes, and the cursor skips from one end of the menu to the other - so I can't choose network or update software etc - I sometimes manage to stop it randomly in the middle of the menu if I press on a command in the middle of the cursor skipping all the menu steps...not sure what the problem is but I have basically not used my brand new apple tv since I bought it for that reason! I should call Apple support I suppose! grrrr hate wasting time with stuff like this!
    Thanks for your help though!

  • Editing Music Tracks

    Hello
I have just starting to play with fcp x.  As a long time broadcast editor I thought it was about time to learn it.
I have done a short showreel for a friend which is a great way to learn!  I put some pictures down in story order and then put a track of music down to cut too.
I needed to edit the music down to length, but I could find no way to add an in point or out point to the music track, all it did was add the in points to the video (and its audio) track above.  In the end I used the razor blade and cut the music where I wanted and then dragged it back to make the edit.  Also I could not get the music track into trim mode..  Is this the only way to edit music tracks?  Any info would be great.
    Thanks a lot
    Rob

No need to use the blade tool. Just trim the audio clip by dragging the edge of the clip. With snapping turned on, it will be easy to align the end points.

My apple TV is connected to a DTV with an HDMI cable and to my Yamaha receiver via optic cable. We rented a movie on Apple TV and.found that the movie played, but we only got audio for music tracks. Voice tracks were silent using both TV and receiver.  This only occurred on the rented video and on recorded shows on my cable DVR. previews and other content on Apple TV are fine. Any ideas??

Previews and trailers do not contain 5.1 audio.
If you have recently moved your setup, you may have inadvertently changed some of the settings on your receiver. It certainly sounds as though it is unable to play the 5.1 audio from the Apple TV.

  • Is there any way to have a music track not snap to the start point of the movie? Using new version on iOS.

On iMovie for the Mac it's possibly to have a music track start at any point in a project I like. For the life of me I can't figure out how to get music on the iOS version to do anything other than snap to the beginning of the project. Any help would be greatfully received.
I've tried it it using the latest version of iMovie for iOS.

If it is a background audio track (green), then select it, tap ... in the inspector and choose 'Move to Foreground"  Now you can put it wherever you like.

  • Aline my slides to beats & fit selected slides to music track is always grey I've tried every thing can someone please help figure this out

aline my slides to beats & fit selected slides to music track is always Gray i cant seem to figure it out its something simple i'm sure I've been trying to work it out for hours can some one help me activate these features

    Hello Michael,
that seems to depend on the theme of your Slideshow.
I found that all music adjustments are disabled, unless my Slideshow has the "Classic" theme, so if you really want to fit the slide duration to the music try to switch your presentation theme to "classic".
    Cheers
    Léonie
P.S. that seems to be a bug - the manual does not mention any restrictions in the newer themes.

    HI sjr64,
I would suggest that you use iMovie or a similar video editing program to add a music track to your video:

  • Can I make a bin of pre-cut music music tracks?

I am making a little edit. I am an avid/fcp editor.
At the moment I am using imovie.
I want to lay downmy music tracks first. Can I make a bin to pull from where I have pre-edited the tracks?
    PLEASE say yes...
On fcp  I would precut all my music choices, then lasso them all and move them around so easily....
imovie seems incredibly cumbersome to do this- dragging tracks only one at a time... and even then. can I insert them cleanly adter one tracks is over and just "push down" what else is in the cut??
    PLEASE help!
    Susan

to answer your question, we  have to discuss different 'levels':
    • sure, you can use the audio-tool of the iLife suite, Garageband, to pre-edit audio clips; 'share' it, and - and that is a concept of iLife-apps - you have access to those audio clips in any othe iLife-app, here: iMovie/Music
    • no tracks.
iMovie (and its bigger brother FCPX) don't have 'tracks' anymore. Totally diff. concept: the storyline. Idea behind that: you lay out a single 'Ariadne's thread'. You are allowed to 'dock' clips (audio/video/stills/graphics) along that main line. Now, moving parts of the main storyline moves those accompanied parts too (=magnetic timeline).
in FCPX this storyline could be music only! (not so in iMovie)
    • a workaround: add 'any' video clip to your Project (or just a colored background). now, you can drag your music to that 'main' clip and replace parts of it
    • no tracks, pt II
    EditMom wrote:

you can add as many audio-clips as you want to the main storyline.
moving a clip, pushes others 'away'.
but: no tracks, so what do you mean by 'push down'? look …:
the first music clip is connected to the first video clip. 2nd one to 2nd videoclip.
dragging the 2nd video to a diff. position in the timeline would move the 2nd music too.
very handy in case of sound-effects:
the first clip has 3 sfx; moving that first video moves ALL connected clips too (=magnetic). I don't have to care for any tracks, don't have to 'compound' clips - all connected, just drag to create your 'story'.-
    • iMovie limitations: iM is meant for simple consumer task: import from camera, organizing material, simple edit, add music/narration, perhaps a title, "A Day In The Zoo" done
if you own legacy FC/pro, I would consider using that - espescially, if you're 'thinking in tracks' - no tracks, no layers, no 'free floating clip somewhere in time' with these tools

  • Purchased Music track to be transfered to windows

Hi, I have purchased a music track from the I tune store and I want to put it on to a video of my children that I am making, the system I have is Pinnacle Edition 5. But when I search for it in 'Import Media' it does not appear any where. Even when I paste the I tune track to my desk top, and then look there via the 'Import Media' in Pannacle, it still is not there. Is it because the track is protected? and if so, how can get over this problem?
    Regards
    David

If you bought the track from the iTunes Store then yes, the song is protected. You can use it in your movie by burning the track to an Audio CD, then importing it back into iTunes. Before importing it, I recommend you set your Preferences (Advanced, Importing) to use the WAV encoder. You can then use the resulting WAV file as the sound track in your movie.
