Editing a song in itunes

I'm trying to make a play list that is just the first 30 seconds of a few songs. I know how to go in and change when the song starts and when it stops.  My question is do I not get to keep the original version of the song in my library as well? It seems l

Joey,
You can do it either way.
If you just set the start and stop times, it will affect that song even when you play it from another playlist.
If you want to make an additional version of the song consisting only of the 30 second clip, and still keep the full original version, a few more steps are necessary.  See this user tip from New Zealand.

When I edit a song in itunes (i.e change the year) on purchased songs, the next time I return to itunes, the information has reverted back to the original information. How can I change that?
When I purchase ITunes music, and it is a song from a Greatest Hits album, the Year of the song shows the year the CD was released and not the year the song was released (i.e. a song may be from 1986, but the Greatest Hits album was released in 1999, so my songs in ITunes show 1999).    So, I go into each of those songs and change it to the year that I want to be displayed. As long as I don't exit out of ITunes, it will show the year that I changed it to (i.e. the 1986 year in this case). But if I exit out of ITunes and then return to ITunes, the year reverts back to 1999. The same happens if I change the genre of a song from, say 'Pop' to 'Alternative', it will revert back the next time I log in.
Oddly enough, as soon as I right-click on that song to change it back, the year/genre that I had entered returns.
How can I make it so my changes are permanently displayed as I want them?  This is pretty annoying when I try to find a song on my Ipod under a certain genre, but it doesn't appear in that genre because the incorrect information gets synched to the Ipod.

Make sure that these two options in Edit > Preferences > Store are turned off:
Then exit iTunes and open it up again.  Your metadata entries should then be persistent - with these options checked iTunes will be comparing what you have with the information held in the iTunes Store, and will overwrite with the latter for Store purchases (and if you have iTunes Match).  If you have any iOS devices you should also turn off Show All Music under Settings > Music.

• Editting/cutting songs from iTunes

I'm new to Mac and everything that comes with it, so this may sound like a very simple question...
Can I edit a song from iTunes on GarageBand? I don't want to make my own thing or add any beats to it or anything...I just want to be able to cut out chunks of the song to make it shorter.
On my PC, I had some really old Sony program that I used to do this for years, and now that's all I know...can someone please tell me how to do this, if I can?
Oh, and one more thing, if that's not something GarageBand does, can you please suggest software that you have found simple and efficient for this?
Thank you so much!

Well, as amazingly helpful as that tidbit was, can you please elaborate? Can you possibly suggest an audio editor that would maybe be a good choice?
Thanks!
Like I said, I'm new to Mac. I'm so glad that this website is available to people like me who know very little about how to do things. So any kind advice I can get would be appreciated.

• How can you edit a song in iTunes so that you can separate the part I want?

Some songs have LONG intros I'd like to edit out. For example, Elton John's Funeral for a friend/Love Lies Bleeding is only available as one track.
How can I edit out the FFAF part? (at least for the version I sync to my ipod.

Hey there,
One option is to change the songs starting time in iTunes. To change when a song starts and ends locate and highlight the song in iTunes. From there, right->click the song and choose "Get Info" from the Menu. When the window pops up, head over to the Options tab and in the middle of the window there are options to adjust the starting and ending times for that song or songs. When you are satisfied, go ahead and hit OK to apply the changes.
From there, sync the updates to your iPod.
Hope this helped.

• Can you edit a song in iTunes?

Is there a way in iTunes to edit a song? LIke if you wanted to trim the end or the beginning or something like that?

Yes, you can edit in itunes.
Select the song you want to edit. Then go to File>Get Info>Options and select the desired start time and end time using the itunes playback head. Once that is done, then go to Advanced>Convert selection to...
That will make a copy of your selection - with the new start and end times you just selected. That will also leave the original song as it was.
hope this helps.

• How do I edit a song in itunes to use in a presentation?

Hi I need to shorten a song from 5 minutes to 2 minutes for a presentation. I edit it in Get Info in iTunes and it works - but as soon as I try to insert the song into the PowerPoint 2010 file it reverts back to the full length. Any ideas please?

You don't really "edit" in iTunes.  You can just tell iTunes where to start/stop a track when played in iTunes.  To actually edit the track you should export a copy of the file then use a program like Audacity (a free multitrack audio editor) to trim the file as desired.

• Unable to Edit Downloaded Song Information - iTunes 11.0.1.12

I downloaded an album, which I found that I could edit half of the songs.  However, the rest of the songs are grayed out.  I searched, but I couldn't find how to fix this issue.  I read that turning off iTunes Match would help, but that didn't do anything.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thank you.

• When you edit a song in iTunes where is that data kept?

If I change the start or end time of a song or the volume, where exactly is that data stored?
Where is it stored on an iPod?
Thanks

I have this question too & Im inclined to believe its stored in the iTunes Library database (not in the song file itself)
if someone could verify this, this would be great!

• Editing a song or podcast?

Is there a way to edit a song or podcast? If not, is there any software on the market that can do that? I have a few podcasts that are cool but a few songs have some heavy profanity that I want to delete but not get rid of the whole thing. There are also some songs in the Music Store that for some reason just has explicit versions....wish every artist made a Edited Clean version along with their Explicit versions!

Editing the music and editing a podcast can be very different, depending upon copyright issues. I haven't tried to edit any songs from iTunes, but I believe you can edit a podcast, by taking it into GarageBand and cutting out what you like. I wanted a song out of a podcast, and the GB route wasn't working, not sure why- used Audio Hyjack Pro and that did the job.

• Edit ID3 tags of iTunes song

I'm trying to create a script that will search for a song, select it and (through virtual keystrokes) allow me to edit the name/album of the song in the "Get Info" pane. The following is what I have so far:
set _nameOfSong to "MySong"
set _nameOfAlbum to "MyAlbum"
tell application "iTunes"
activate
set _results to (get every track of library playlist 1 whose name contains ¬
"garageBandSong1" and album is "" and artist is "OAC" and genre is "")
repeat with _song in _results
play _song
end repeat
delay 3
tell application "System Events"
-- simulates the "Select Current Song" menu item from the "Controls" menu
keystroke "l" using command down
delay 2
keystroke "i" using command down
delay 5
tell process "iTunes"
tell window 1
tell tab group 1
click radio button "Info"
tell radio button "Info"
-- edit name, album of song
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell
Usual, when i play a song in iTunes, a speaker icon appears to the left of the song's name. The icon does not appear when I use the "play _song" command, which in turn prevents me from selecting it via commandL. What can i do to fix it? Is there any other way to search for and select a song via applescript?
thanks

Using +GUI Scripting+ and the "Get Info" pane isn't the fastest way to edit the name/album of a song with AppleScript. Nevertheless, if that's what you want to do, maybe the following lines of code might help:
*tell application "iTunes"*
activate
*tell application "System Events" to tell process "iTunes"*
*set _results to rows of outline 1 of scroll area 2 of splitter group 1 of window 1 whose (value of text fields contains "garageBandSong1") and (value of text fields contains "OAC")* -- needs several seconds
*repeat with _song in _results*
*select _song*
*keystroke return* -- play song (optional)
*keystroke "i" using command down*
*delay 5*
*tell window 1*
*tell tab group 1*
*click radio button "Info"*
--edit name, album of song
*end tell*
*end tell*
*keystroke return*
*end repeat*
*end tell*
*end tell*
Maybe it would be still better to replace the statement
*set _results to rows of outline 1 of scroll area 2 of splitter group 1 of window 1 whose (value of text fields contains "garageBandSong1") and (value of text fields contains "OAC")*
with something like this:
*set _results to rows of outline 1 of scroll area 2 of splitter group 1 of window 1 whose (value of text field 1 contains "song name") and (value of text fields 2 contains "something else") and (value of text fields 3 contains "something else")*

• Can not edit my songs in the itunes library

Can not edit my songs in the itunes library
Windows7 64 BIT / SP1  /  Self-built PC
Latest ITunes version 10.4
80GB Classic 5th GEN IPOD
I had almost full of content on my ipod, then I upgraded from XP HOME(32) to Windows7 (64 Bit)
What I did not want to do was to spend time loading All 75GB back on the itunes Library, but decided I should restore the ipod, since it's been acting up a bit. I did not deactivate the last XP OS Computer prior to formatting the harddrive, because I thought it would not matter, since the software would be GONE.
So I downloaded another itunes/Quicktime on this new Win7 O.S., and created the same playlists I had before, then dragged each genre/main music folder into the appropriate folder in itunes.
I clicked on a few songs to change the Info, but they are all greyed out and I cannot edit anything....I never had these problems before.
How to I re-enable to EDIT the INFO again?   Thank you!
(itunes also told me I had authorized four out of five computers for this device...WHAT?  There is only one computer, and my one ipod.
......BUT.......My sister has a 16GB itouch, and I put my songs on her itouch, also charged it up on my computer, since she does not have her own computer yet. Will that mess anything up?
Can she create her own User apple ID/password, then be able to edit her stuff from my computer? AUTHORIZE her itouch on my computer, or do I have to create her own playlists (because I have an 80GB, and she has a16GB, obviously, she will not get all mine on her small device) then checkmark ONLY her playlists to manage on her itouch, from my computer?
A few people told me to try this....
I Plugged in the OL' ipod, Under the SUMMARY TAB, and under the OPTIONS TAB, I changed what I had, which was "SYNC ONLY CHECKED SONGS AND VIDEOS" to MANUALLY MANAGE MUSIC AND VIDEOS"
THEN underneath that, "OPEN ITUNES WHEN IPOD IS CONNECTED", "AND MANUALLY MANAGE MUSIC WERE BOTH CHECKED."
THEN - I went back into my Win Explorer Main Music folder, and under PROPERTIES, I unchecked the READ-ONLY Box, hit APPLY, then OK, then I went back into the itunes library and tried to edit a few songs, but they are all still greyed out and not editable.
I went back into the WIN EXPLORER main Music folder and checked to see if the READ-ONLY was still unchecked, but it automatically reverted back to READ ONLY.
Another question I wanted to ask was this. I have my main Music Folder on my Storage HDD. They are MP3 files, and listed as Country,Blues,Classic Rock,Reggae, etc.  After I installed the WIN7 OS, I had to download itunes again/Quicktime,then dragged each main music folder into the appropriate playlist until they were all there.  Since my itunes app is on my Boot Drive, and my main music folder on my Storage drive,am I wasting or adding any needless HDD space having on both HDD'S? or is this a non-issue?  Thank you!

Hello All!
Well, after posting the help messages, I went diggingthrough both my itunes folder on my (C) drive, and then the Music Folder on my(F) Storage drive where I keep all my music files and then went into securityand in each line, I made FULL CONTROL, APPLY, then went back into iTunes afterplugging my ipod in and clicked on MANUALLY MANAGE TUNES.
I don't know which did it, but now I can edit the songs. To answer yourquestion, I was able to play the songs, but just couldn't edit any of themuntil now. Thanks for your Reply!

• How do I edit the songs on my ipod through itunes w/o having to update all

I just recently got an ipod and I'm loving it. I am a heavy music downloader and am also very particular about how my songs are organized (no duplicate artist names, songs, etc.)sometimes a song slips my eye, so how can i edit my songs and artists on my itunes and match it back to my ipod without having to delete them all and update the entire library again?
PC   Windows XP

Thanks a lot for the help and the quick responses (this discussion site is great)...so one more (Very elementary) question...you both say to sync the ipod "again", how do I do that? I know you sync the ipod when you simply connect it to the computer but after I make song edits, do I manually disconnect then reconnect to automatically update the ipod or is there a drop down button on the top of the itunes page that I can click?
So the run down:
1) Connect the ipod (sync)
2) Ipod settings on: (manually manage music) or (automatically update)
3) Edit the songs desired in: (my library) or (in ipod)? - which one should I do so that I don't have to do it twice?
4) Then resync the ipod to match the library (how do i "sync again")?
Thanks in advance for the help...
Do I have it right?

• Can't import edited song from iTunes to iPhoto

Hi,
I've created a slideshow in iPhoto and a playlist in iTunes to go with the slideshow. I shortened one of the songs in the playlist from 4.5 minutes to 1.5 minutes (file-get info-options). Within iTunes the song is shortened but when I import the playlist to iPhoto the song reverts back to its original length. I realise there is a workaround using iDVD (when I import the song into iDVD it stays at 1.5 minutes unlike iPhoto) but it means I have to redo the whole slideshow again which I'd prefer to avoid.
Has anyone any suggestions how to shorten a song for a slideshow within iPhoto?

I don't build slide shows, so not sure how hard it is to do in iDVD, but you can burn a song to CD and then rip it back into iTunes. Then you can edit the song in Garage Band. You might want to do this with a number of songs that you might use in one sitting, as it's pretty tedious.
One other thought: check if Amazon has the mp3 of the same song. The content there is not protected (I think the music producers cut that deal just to stick it to Apple) and is $0.99 per song like on iTunes. Might be worth another buck to avoid all this hassle. iTunes is easier to search and buy from (IMO) and has a better selection, but you might get lucky at Amazon. I've ended up buying the same song again at Amazon just for this reason.

I am trying to delete duplicate songs in itunes but the delete button cannot be activated.Any advice please?

It is possible that the files are read only or you do not have permission to delete for the music folder in Windows.
If you go into Get Info for a track, will it let you edit? If not it is probably one of the above.

I want to delete some songs from iTunes but no delete button appears when i right click or when i try to delete it from edit. what can i do?

If the songs are downloaded into your iTunes library (i.e. they don't have the cloud icon against them) then you should be able to delete them by selecting them and pressing the delete button on your keyboard.
If they do have the cloud icon then they are in the cloud - you can turn off the showing of all icloud music via the 'Show iTunes in the Cloud Purchases' on the Store tab in iTunes > Preferences (command-comma), or you can hide individual tracks and/or albums so that they don't show in the cloud : iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases.
