Editing AIFF files in ituines

Can I edit aiff files in iTunes?

Peter--
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You can't really edit AIFF files in iTunes. You can change the start and stop times by choosing "Get Info" from the "File" menu when you have a song selected. You can also change the EQ and volume for each song, but that's about it.
To really edit your songs, and perhaps add fades, etc., you'll need another program. You can do some rudimentary editing of AIFF files if you have QuickTime Pro, and if you have GarageBand, you can use it to edit AIFFs. There are also some other inexpensive sound editors like SoundStudio and Audacity...

  • Garageband erased all aiff files of recordings made!!!

    Hi there,
I spent a few hours on garageband simply recording some audio over the internal mic. Some of it I recorded normally, some in loop mode. Then I edited it, cut out what I didn't want and also deleted whole tracks with some audio on it. After all the editing I had around 6 tracks with mainly short audio loops in it (made from these recordings earlier on).
I then saved the project. Then quit. Then put my computer to sleep.
3 minutes later I woke it up again, opened the same file in Garageband I'd previously been working on. Then all I got were error messages telling me one after the other, that all the aiff-files from the various recordings could not be found. I tried the "search" button, but that never found anything.
I opened the file and all my loops were there in form, but the audio was not there, i.e. couldn't play any of it.
I opened the package contents of the GB file and the media folder was empty. The file's size is 1.1MB.
This seems to be a huge bug. This has never happened to me before. It was the first time using Garageband on Snow Leopard. And possibly the first time using Garageband 09 at all (I've used older versions frequently).
Has noone else had this happen? It makes me nervous ****. I'd have to save, quit and reopen all the time to make sure the audio data is still there.
    Looking forward to your comments.

    Hey there Alphaspin,
Sorry to hear you had the same thing happen to you.
BUT AT THE SAME TIME I'm very happy to see someone confirm my problem. It's a first step on the way to freeing that poor little bug from GB, I'm assuming. (you hear that, Apple? Don't be too vicious with the poor thing. It's not its fault!)
As a note to various people above who were hypothesizing my failure to save the file properly.
I understand your scepticism, but think about this. If I hadn't saved the file properly (before quitting - as I remember well - or during the quitting process), why would all the loops still be shown in my tracks in the Garageband file? I don't see how that could possibly happen if the file wasn't in some way "saved".
What I see in the file I referenced in my first post, is everything exactly in the state I left it when I quit it, except for all the loops not playing because GB can't find the original aiff files in it's project file any more (because they've apparently been deleted during the quitting process).
Anyhow, I hope more people will find this post and confirm our experiences. Probably they won't find it before the ** hits the fan, unfortunately. It's all a learning experience as always. Just in this case backing up doesn't help diddly-squat. You can seemingly save it to as many HDs as you wish - if GB deletes the aiff files in the project, they're lost in multiple places at once
morale of the story: I will not use GB until I see this addressed and fixed and I can test it with some post-modern classical junk music. (because I don't feel like going back to leopard - which might fix the problem for the moment).

  • Is it possible to convert to an AIFF file in itunes 10 and beyond, and if so what is the procedure?

Hello.  Is it possible to convert to an AIFF file in itunes 10 and beyond, and if so what is the procedure?
I use FCP7 and often have a sound loop or the like that I need in AIFF format, I normally use itunes to do the conversion, but have heard that version 10 no longer performs this task...?
    Thx for the help!

It still works the same as in past releases.  Go to Edit > Preferences > Import Settings, and set "Import Using" to "AIFF Encoder," and then the option will be available.  Consult this document for details:

  • How do I export as in AIFF file with chapters to burn in iTunes?

I taped a round table discussion which is about an hour long. After editing in FCE, I need to make a CD of the discussion, ideally creating 12 five minute long songs. Is there a way to export an aiff file with chapters which I can then burn in iTunes as 12 separate songs? Please tell me I don't need to make and export 12 separate sequences.

Mark In and Out points in the timeline. Export. MArk new In and Out points and export again. Rpeat 10 more times.

  • Importing and Editing AAC files

I am using Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2 and have imported a 5.1 channel .aac file. I am, however, unable to edit that file in STP. I can see all 5 channels but they are all greyed out, meaning I cannot individually do anything with those tracks. When I copy and paste them in a new file, I get all five channels in one channel (five separate sound files but all on one track).
Can anyone please help me how to edit each track separately?

OKay I attempted to open the .aac file by choosing 'All Files' option and first I encountered this Error Message:
Warning: the stream may have timecode breaks. Please use 'Fix Timecode Breaks' to fix this stream.
    I chose 'Fix Now'
Afterwards it appeared the file was open in MPEGStreamclip though I still got the empty screen with five blue dots in the middle.
I then tried to 'Export Audio'
    and chose AIFF as Format
However I got a second Error Message saying
    Error: can't prepare the movie
One more thing, I want to be able to import all Five Channel and edit them individually and while trying to export audio in MPEGStreamclip I noticed that it was exporting file as two channel stereo file only.
Any suggestions on how I can do this?

  • Problem converting music file into aiff: 'empty' aiff file

I can't get on with my edit!! Problem: I try to convert a music file so I can use it in a sequence as background music. When I convert (export using quicktime conversion) the mp3 file into a aiff file (choosing bit depth 16 and 48000 khz) I can convert the file in an aiff file, but then, when I import this aif file and I want to listen to it, it doesn't contain any music, sound doesn't show up, as if it was empty (though shows 3 MB and right duration). What is going on here, what am I doing wrong??
    Please help!!

It's not DRM protected, not coming from Itunes store... In fact it worked before but I don't know why it doesn't now, following all FCE instructions... MartinR you're right, it works when converting directly in itunes and then importing into FCE.
    Thanks guys!

  • Aiff file too big to e-mail?

I've been trying to e-mail an Aiff file but the file seems to be too large (66.9MB)
to send. Is there a way to shrink it? I can send it via mp3 but that's not the format that's needed.
    Dual 2.7 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   2.5 Gigs RAM

if its a song being created in logic then bounce it as mp3
but at the heights rate like 320 on mono and stereo
    use variable bit rate
and set it to the highest
    use best encoding
    don't filter freq below 10hz
and use normal for the stereo mode
    thats it
then one the person gets it they can convert it back to aiff
    if thats a problem
then get Gmail or yousendit account they support up to 100mb per upload
or you can get a .mac account which is even better but abit slower
this was the person can download straight from the don't .mac, edit and save it there again for u to download

  • Getting AC3 or AIFF files directly from the DVD studio Timeline.

I'm trying to give my website manager parts of one of my previous demos. Instead of completely rendering the whole thing over I imported the original Mpeg, AC3 and AIFF files to my DVD studio timeline. There I was able to cut out the middle of my demo by cutting the end of one Sequence and the beginning of the other. With this said I want to give my website manager Mpeg and AIFF or AC3 files for him to use. I was able to export the Mpeg file easily but am not able to export either of the audio files, does anyone have an idea?

Hmm, you really should completely render the whole thing over again.
MPEG-2 videos are very highly compressed. If you take that and compress it again for the web, there is going to be a guaranteed loss in quality. Think of photocopying. If you make a photocopy of a picture, it comes out pretty good. But if you make a photocopy of that photocopy, it comes out very bad. You want to avoid double compressing.
Go back to your original videos in FCP, edit the clips you want. Then export out QuickTime mov files using the same codec you edited in. Give those to your website manager for compression for the web.

  • Can't import AIFF file

I'm trying to convert audio cassettes as per instructions in www.wap.org/journal/digitizingcassettes/default.html. Successfully used Audacity to record song and export an ".aiff" file. But can't get that file into iTunes 7.5 (or earlier version)! Tried dragging file onto iTunes icon, dragging it into open iTunes window, using iTunes->File->Import or Add to Library but nothing happens. Even changed its Info to open under iTunes vice Audacity, but it won't. I must be missing something very basic - have had no problems importing audio CDs (but they wouldn't be aiff).

The "but nothing happens" is normal iTunes behavior when it finds the file to be incompatible.
Can't say for sure, but one thing to check is your Audacity options under Edit > Preferences > File Format. Make sure you are using the most vanilla flavor of AIFF, namely 16 bit PCM. Then look under Quality and make sure you are using 44.1.
If you can't resolve the AIFF issue, consider using Audacity to create a high bit-rate (320) mp3 and import that into iTunes instead. It will sound every bit as good.

  • Preview AIFF file in CS6

Why can't I preview an AIFF file in Bridge CS6? Mac OSX 10.7
    Thanks!

Go to edit/preferences/file type associations and see what program you have set to open it with.  There may be none selected.

  • Can't Replace (Relink) AIFF files with anything.

    Hi there,
using FCPx 10.0.9 on 64 bit iMac which runs like a top.
I used some AIFF's in a session before experiencing and confirming here that even when using optimized media, they upset our finicky FCPX.   I converted the files to WAVs used relink (and create optimized media again) to replace them, and everything was fine.
Somehow the files have become unlinked.  The Event Browser files still show as AIF files in the Event Browser (and in the Relink dialogue window,) and when I try to relink them to the WAV versions, it *seems* to work at first.  The progress bar for "Confirming compatible format type" or whatever finishes quickly & disappears, then the file name is no longer in the Relink window.  Great right?
Only nothing has changed in the Event Browser or Timeline.  I seem to have trashed the original AIF files once the WAV's worked, but I have even tried converting the WAVs *back* to AIFF's and tried to relink to those just to see if relink worked at all, and yeah, no.
Totally stumped, and a bit worried.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Brian

Doing "Show in Finder" for the AIFF files brings up aliases in the Event's Original Media Folder.   Based on some file path remnants it's now looking like I actually imported the AIFF's (converted in iTunes from mp3's)  directly from an iTunes folder in which I created them (and tagged them as a single album,) whereas I thought I had imported them as optimized media.  That would confirm why the AIFF's were wonky.  Anyway those files / album / folder have been deleted through iTunes, which I would have done assuming the WAV's were securely in their place.
The WAV'es *were* imported with optimized media setting, as evidenced by the real files - not aliases - being in the Original Media folder.  (WAV's originally created in iTunes before optimized import.)
So yes WAV versions are in broswer and fully available.  How would I replace the AIF files with the WAV's, I assumed relink was the way to do that.  Or do you mean replace the edit pieces in time line.   I don't know how I would do that to get all the time codes to match - dropping the full clip over the edit piece gives a number of options but I don't think any will replace with same in and out time code, unless I'm mistaken.   Also I would like to confirm that my Relink can still be functional.
I did try one more thing, which was to delete one of the WAVs from the Event, then trying again to link to it again  - thinking maybe the AIFF couldn't link to it because it was already associated with a clip in the Event.   It didn't work.   Also if it had it wouldn't explain why when I try to link to a newly created AIFF version, it will not link to that either, despite identical file names.

  • How to edit audio files recorded on Ipod

I'm new at this! I'm recording long interviews on my Ipod, which get downloaded as Voice Memos into Itunes. I need to edit those files, and thought Garage Band would be just the program to do it with.  Now I'm not sure it will work.  The original files are in.wav format, but I figured out how to translate them into .mp3 format, too. Regardless, Garage Band won't recognize them. What is the best way to edit those interviews? Is there a way to do it with Garage Band? If I have to look to some other app, what do you recommend? Thanks for any light you can shed!

If they are in itunes, you should be able to just drag them from the itunes sidebar area in garageband to edit them.
If not and mp3 isnt working try converting it into aiff although wav works fine on garageband too.

  • How to convert AIFF files to Lossless on a PC

Is there a simple way to convert the songs already stored in iTunes on my PC without having to "create Lossless version", make a copy and then delete the AIFF file? Using iTunes 9, have already changed the preference to Lossless, can't find a way to "convert". Thank you.

Actually i just figured out a work around of sorts. Highlight several songs > create lossless version > after the lossless versions are created, the original AIFF are still highlighted and can easily be deleted, leaving the Lossless versions on iTunes and all the AIFF are in the recycle bin. Thanks for your help.

  • .aiff files need a #1 to import into iTunes. Why?

I am creating an audio only version of a movie that I edited in iMovie by sharing each chapter to QT, compressing it into an aiff file. When I tried to put these .aiff files into iTunes, the files wouldn't play any sound, although the scrubber would move telling me that the file was actually playing. I could preview them in the finder and they would play fine. They would also play as QT files. I could import them into iTines, but when I went into the Information window and looked at the volume, it was set to 0.0, which you cannot change. I got no swirling arrow next to the file name, like you usually do when importing files into iTunes. All of a sudden one of the files worked so I thought I was good to go, and continued importing more of the .aiffs, but I had the same problem with other files I tried to import. I noticed a 1 next to the file that mysteriously worked, so I just renamed each other new file with a 1 at the end of its name and now they all import fine. (It looked like this: chapter24.aif 1) Anybody know why this is? Seems silly, but it works.

  • Can audio be captured as .aiff file when capturing DV?

I have set up my System Settings so that I can open audio files into an external editor (a sound editing program called Peak). Any added audio tracks in my FCE file work fine with this because they are .aiff files. But the live audio track that was recorded with the camera is apparently a Quicktime file, and won't open in Peak. Someone told me that I could set up some sort of preference for capturing DV so that the audio portion would be captured as.aiff. Does anyone know how to do this?
    Thanks, Bob

i have just tried out your method, Al and Tom, purely in the spirit of experimentation and a strange thing has occurred.
I had a 30 minute clip but only wanted to manipulate a short section so I put In and Out points yet the whole clip appeared in my sound editor.
Then (in the timeline) I used the razor blade to cut out and delete the unwanted sections, but again the whole audio clip appeared in the editor.
Is it only possible to open the complete audio clip?
    Ian.
