Editing AIM profile with iChat?

This is kind of a silly question, but how do you go about editing your AIM profile through iChat? I've done it a couple times before but I really cannot remember what I clicked on at all since the last time I edited it.

If you do mean your Profile
For Tiger
Then Click on the Buddy List itself.
Now go to the Buddies Menu. (Change my Profile)
For Leopard.
It has been moved to the iChat menu itself.

  • Why can't I edit my profile on iChat?

I need to change the email address im using on ichat, but when i go up to iChat in the taskbar the option to edit profile is greyed out. I havent been using ichat for long and am just starting out. All help is much appreciated(: thanks, please reply!

    HI,
The iChat option to edit your Profile is for AIM Logins.  (AIM and @mac.com or MobileMe and iCloud name Logins)
If you do not have a Buddy List that Logs in to AIM then the option to Edit the Profile is greyed out.
Actually to be precise you have to be logged in with that Account/Screen Name (I logged my AIM logins out to check).
Can you be a bit clearer about what it is you are trying to do ?
In many cases the email address is the ID or Screen Name that logs in to the server.
MobileMe issued @me.com names will tend to run out as the MobileMe account runs out (Stop working)
@mac.com names work forever (Lapsed Paid for accounts still works as Valid AIM Screen Names.
Any AIM Account that had a linked email for password recovery or the security questions would need changing at AIM (your account info at AIM Settings)

    Hi
Goto ichats prefs/accounts highlight the account and click on the - button at the bottom of the window.

  • AIM User To AIM User Possible With iChat?

    Hello,
We came across an iChat problem today and I'm not sure if I have this straight or not - here's the story. I have an AIM account (I haven't set up a dot mac or mobile me account yet). My Mom has an AIM account as well. My brother has a dot mac account. I can video chat with my brother (AIM account to dot mac account). My Mom can video chat with by brother (AIM account to dot mac account). But my Mom and I cannot video chat with each other (AIM account to AIM account). Is it possible for an AIM account to video chat with another AIM account using iChat or have I got this all wrong - does one of us have to at least have a dot mac (or mobile me) account? When my Mom and I try to initiate a video chat, we keep getting a "communication error". When I initiate a chat with my Mom, iChat "rings" on her end - she clicks "accept" and boom - "communication error". When my Mom initiates a video chat with me, iChat "rings" on my end - I click "accept" and boom - "communication error" again.
My Mom uses an iMac G5/2 Ghz running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and iChat 3.1.9. I use an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X 10.5.6 and iChat 4.0.7. My brother has an iMac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo running Mac OS X 10.5.6 and iChat 4.0.7.
Does anyone know what the problem may be?
Thanks so much in advance for your help.
    Gerard

I did try port 443 and I even tried creating a new AIM account but that didn't work. It just occurred to me that my Mom has a router and I have a router but my brother doesn't have a router and as I mentioned above, my Mom can video chat with my brother and I can video chat with my brother but my Mom and I can't video chat - we get a "communication error" - the error is -8.
So when my Mom and I try connecting together to video chat, it seems like her router and my router are preventing the video chat connection. I don't understand why my Mom (with router) can video chat with my brother (no router on his end) and why I (with router) can video chat with my brother (no router on his end). I should also mention that my Mom and I can text chat but we can't do an audio or video chat?
Does this help any? Do I need to configure something in my router to allow this connection to my Mom? I have a D-Link DI-604 wired router (firmware revision 3.51) with default factory settings and my Mom has a D-Link EBR-2310 wired router with default factory settings (not sure of the firmware).
    Thanks so much in advance,
    Gerard

  • Problem with ichat 3.1.9 and os 10.4.11 and aim logon for a/v chats

Hello all. Please help. I have been trying to help a family member with their mac laptop, os tiger 10.4.11 and ichat 3.0. When trying to logon to start an a/v chat with anyone the program keeps defaulting to AIM. We have repeatedly deleted the "com.apple.ichat.aim.plist" file from the computer. This was done in the home/user/preferences/library folder and then in the documents folder. We have deleted all AIM accounts from the computer in iChat and all AIM associations in the keychain access. We have unchecked all boxes for the bonjour account in preferences in ichat and checked only "use this account" for the ".mac" account. We have tried changing the port to 443 from 5190 with no results. Short of reinstalling the ichat program from the installation cd, I am at a loss for what to do next. All replies helpful. Thanks.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Can I check a couple of things ?
    You are on 10.4.11 ?
And the iChat version reads iChat 3.0 ?
This would suggest iChat has been Reinstalled and the 10.4.11 COMBO Updater for your Processor type has not bee installed (Again)
Software Update will think this update is done and not ask for it again. However the reinstall of apps will override this and need the COMBO Installer to be downloaded and run.
With the OS at this time there were separate Intel and PCC Downloads.
    See this List
    Next.
iChat 3 can login to AIM with AIM Names, Apple IDs (@mac.com and MobileMe @Me.com names) and to various Jabber servers also in an email type name style (as in [email protected]) and can be made to login to GoogleTalk.
Previously in iChat 1 & 2, iChat Only logged in to AIM.
In the Start Up Screens which you can return to be deleting the com.apple.ichat.plist and the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist at the same time it will offer AIM as the first choice (With @mac.com as the alternative option).
MobileME names have to be entered as if they are AIM names and entered in full as in [email protected].
iChat is therefore a Multi-service client. An AIM Login with an AIM name or an Apple ID is the first choice in entering a Screen Name in the Start Up Screen.
From there it will appear first in the list in iChat > Preferences > Accounts (And the Window Menu). In the server Settings tab it will list the AIM server as the login server (login.oscar.aol.com) whether you use an Apple ID or an AIM one.
Apple have an agreement that lets AIM (Or it's servers) query the MobileMe and @mac.com name databases to check a name is valid.
There is one drawback with this method. AIM only allow passwords up to an including 16 characters where as Apple allows longer.
They need to be shortened to 16 characters or less if they are longer at Apple.
There is NO Apple or Mac IM service.
Reinstalling iChat will not change this behaviour.
There is no option in the General Section of the Preference to Set iChat as the default app See Here in iChat 3
This has a direct effect on using Web Page Links to start Group Chat/Chatrooms.
This is changed in Firefox 3.x in the MIME settings or this Method in Internet Explorer.
Shiira and Safari cannot change this but changing in the others seems to help them as well.
    Summary.
It looks like you need a COMBO Install to bring iChat up to date with the OS based on the info posted. Links provided.
iChat is first and foremost an AIM client and Apple IDs log in to the AIM Servers.
iChat cannot be set to be the default App in iChat 3 (It can in iChat 4 and 5).
However you can use a Web Browser to change this behaviour for Web Links to Chatrooms/Group chats.
I think I have covered almost everything I can think of raised by your post but I am still unsure which of these you were really asking about.
If I have missed the point could you re-post with some different info or describe what it is you are trying to do ?

  • Use AIM with iChat

I don't have an .Mac acount, so I use MSNforMac to talk with an Hotmail account to my PC friends.
I want to use iChat because MSNforMac don't let us make videoconferences.
But can I talk to my friends (that use MSN in a PC) by iChat with an AIM Acount?
So I tried to create an AIM acount
But now, when I write the screen name and the password of my AIM acount in iChat, appears an message saying that iChat couldn't connect to AOL service.
    Answer, please, if you know...
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi BrunoMCP,
Yes the Jabber side of iChat can be made with the aid of "Transports" to connect to other services such as MSN.
However this does not include Video or Audio with the current Codecs used.
Your options are aMSN or Mercury Messenger for Video to MSN Buddies or as has been said move to Skype.
For links to aMSN and Mercury go here

  • Does the new AIM Triton work with Ichat?

    Hi,
Does anyone know if the new AIM Triton works with Ichat AV? I know the Beta version was not working but don't know about the new triton release.
Also, has anyone tried video/audio communication between Trillian and Ichat? Does it work? Is it better than AIM?
    Thanks,
    Stefano

I have been working with the Triton on a PC and after much research (frustration), I have found this stated on the AIM support site:
    http://www.aim.com/helpfaq/startingout/getstarted.adp?aolp=#six
Q: Is AIM Triton compatible with AIM 5.9, AOL 9.0 and iChat?
A: : AIM Triton works seamlessly with AIM 5.9, AOL 9.0 and iChat. You can send and receive instant messages with your buddies using any of these clients. Certain features may not work across all clients at this time. Voice Chat with more than two people only works with other Triton users. Video Chat will work only between two Triton users at this time.
So after reading around, I believe the 5.9 will video to the iChat 3's but I haven't had the time to try. Other posts suggest this to be true. Including many by Ralph.

  • TO ALL THOSE HAVING TROUBLE WITH ICHAT AND AIM ON MACBOOKS

I've had a lot of trouble with AIM and iChat on my new Macbook, but I believe I've figured out the answers to all the problems I and others have encountered.
Firstly, for those who's AIM continually crashes and displays the message "The application AIM unexpectedly shut down," my answer to your problem is too many sent messages. Watch the bar in the bottom left of your chat window, when it reaches red, your application will probably shut down.
Secondly, for those experiencing difficulties with iChat, it's most likely a problem with communitcation between your wireless router and your computer. Try these steps:
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. From the View, choose Sharing.
    3. Click the Firewall tab.
    4. Click New.
    5. From the Port Name pop-up menu, choose Other.
If you have a Macbook, you'll probably have a TCP Port Number Bar and a UDP Port Number Bar. Try these steps:
    1. In the TCP Port Number(s) Bar, type: 5190, 5298
    2. In the UDP Port Number(s) Bar, type: 1024-5219, 5221, 5223-65535
    3. In the Description Bar, type: iChat AV
    4. Click OK
    5. Click Start above the window with your firewall settings, and make sure the box next to iChat AV is checked
    6. Relaunch iChat
Good Luck! I hope this solves some of the problems that people have been encountering.

    Rob
My Linksys is the WAG54G, which might be different from your WRT54G. Currently, UPnP is disabled and the Router ports are a bit of a mystery, because they're forwarded to an IP address that's outside of the current DHCP Address Range! Once I got it working, I was reluctant to change it even though it looked anomalous.
The Firewall is on, with the iChat ports open that I listed in the previous post.
My two regular buddies are my sons, who both use Trillian Pro on a Windows machine. Works pretty well despite occasional freezes or garbled sound.
    Hope you get sorted soon.

  • AIM Triton - Not compatable with iChat for Audio/Video

    **From MacDailyNews** http://www.macdailynews.com
AOL's new AOL Instant Messenger 'Triton' (free for Windows 2000 and XP at http://www.aim.com/ ) update is now available. "Triton is more marketing-driven than ever, but this version's audio-chat feature shuts out one popular AIM-compatible program, Apple's iChat AV, and it doesn't allow video-conferencing with any other AIM software," Rob Pegoraro writes for The Washington Post. "More ads, less compatible: Does that sound appealing?"
"Text chats between Triton, earlier AIM releases and two third-party programs -- iChat AV, released with AOL's support, and the independently developed, open-source Gaim -- went fine. But Triton makes enough changes to voice chatting to prevent any audio exchanges with iChat AV, and its new video software doesn't work with any other AIM-compatible software," Pegoraro reports. "Fortunately, you don't have to run AIM to use the AIM network. For basic text chats and file transfers, non-AOL programs such as Gaim, Trillian and iChat provide the same utility without any of the ads."

    HI Rj,
As Triton got to it's current version as a Beta and then without any apparent changes become the item on the AIM latest page link http://www.aim.com/getaim/win/latestwin.adp I would presume it is not a fully functional item yet.
Particularly as AIM 5.9 is still available here http://www.aim.com/getaim/win/otherwin.adp?aolp=
As it is market driven hopefully it will catch up with AIM 5.9 on the connectivity front and lose or at least gain the ability to block unwanted ads.
I think we have a while to go with this one before suggesting people swap to Triton.

  • Can you use any email account with iChat?

It appears that iChat allows you to add other other email accounts other than AOL or MobileMe but can you chat using these accounts and can you screen share etc with non MobileMe users?
Message was edited by: Peter O'Toole

    Hi,
The answer is yes but your question is wrong.
The AIM page for Registration now allows you to use any Email ID as a Screen Name.
AIM has long done this for the Apple IDs of [email protected] and the MobileMe type email IDs of [email protected]
They have also done it for other ISPs in the past as well
More recently I have had someone test with me having used a Hotmail ID in the AIM Registration process.
Jabber IDs look like email IDs and in the case of the GoogleTalk option they can be.
As long as the Screen Name works in one of your Buddy lists it will be valid And if they are an iChat user with iChat 4 or above then they will be able to Screen Share.
    NOTES:
Screen Sharing in iChat uses a Random port so any router or modem that routes need to be able to use UPnP or Port Mapping Protocol to open the ports or it will not work.

  • How do i use my apple id with ichat?

how do i use my apple id with ichat?

    Hi,
Only @Mac.com and MobileMe Apple IDs are valid AIM names as well  (And the Passwords need to be 16 characters of Less - AIM end Issue).
If you have any other form of Apple ID then you will need to register for either an @mac.com name  or create an AIM one.
NOTE The @Mac.com Registration requires you link an active Email to the @Mac.com name.
THIS CANNOT BE an Email address you have used for an Apple ID already.
The AIM Registration asks for Email address for Security and Password Recovery and is not Hard Linked in the same way (you could use the same email to set up multiple accounts/Screen Names)
    To state things another way:-
A MobileMe ID is an Email address.
It is an Apple ID and will work in those places it is supposed to, iTunes, Apple Support Communities (with Alias set up), Face Time (With Registration) Apple On-Line Store, Mac App Store.
It is a Vlaid AIM NAme as well (If the password is kept to 16 characters or less).
@mac.com names are Apple IDs with the same access as above.
It is a Valid AIM Screen Name.
If it was registered before MobileMe started it maybe linked to a Current MobileMe account as a valid Email.
A Current Registration is purposely for iChat use and Requires a Non Apple current Email that is NOT linked to any other Apple ID
Any other name or Email used to create an Apple ID is not an Email with/through Apple.
It is NOT a valid AIM screen Name.
It is only an Apple ID that allows access to the places listed above.
If it is an email this cannot be used to Register with @mac.com
    I hope this is clear.

  • Edit User Profile How do I enalble user lo loggin to their own profile page and edit it?

    Hi
I am having some problems....... any help would be nice
I am using DWCS3 and ADDT toolbox extension wamp and phpmyadmin
I am trying to create a site for people to be able to post a profile with a picture and info and display it in a dynamic table.
I can create the form, a database and display the data on another page in a dynamic table all ok..... kind of.
I can create a user registration system with ADDT.
I can redirect them after registration to a post profile page, which has a form to upload details. I can then display those details on a user info page.
I would like to allow logged in users to be able to click on a link to their own profile page , which would show the same form that was filled out in the post profile page, but would be already populated with their previously entered information. I would like users to be able to edit the content of the form and update the information in the database and automatically delete delete any previously entered information ( only in the fields that have been edited)
How do I go about doing this?.... step by step?
I want to allow logged in user to view their own profile not every bodies.... how do I do that?
I have read on another post that to do something similar to this I should filter my database information using a session varialble MM_username that I think is created automatically after user logs in .... but I don;t know how to do this.... I really don;t understand is this the way I link my user to a page that only displays their info ? or is there another way?
I would also like to allow only people who have posted a profile to be able to edit profile ...... do I do that by
    1. new user registers and is redirected to login page
    2. user logs in and is redirected to an index page that has a post profile button and a edit profile button but only the POST button is active ( and links to a form to post info ) and the edit profile button is linked to a " You must post a profile first" page ( with a link back)
3 so user posts profile and is directed to an index page which has an edit profile button which is now linked to an edit profile page
    Does that sound correct?
Any suggestions in getting all this to work would be much appreciated

    Hi Yomi,
I have created the users page which submits to a members page and tell the user to edit biodata, profession, and hobbies. but on clicking I am really confused on how the id will be transfered from the members page to update biodata and the user updates the form which will show past records. this should also apply to the profession and hobbies
If I understand this right, you might want to consider providing a complete "userdata" section which comes with a Dynamic List and a Dynamic Form to have users add & update their data plus (via the Dynamic List) track all past records
Lastly is it possible I create recordset at will and the id will be passed thru since kt-login-id behaves sololy
I really can´t recommend this "pass user_id as URL variable" approach in this case, as URL variables are displayed in the browser´s address bar -- and this is absolutely insecure, because anyone could simply change the displayed "user_id" value, reload the form and hence edit data which belongs to a different user.
The only secure method is indeed to use ADDT´s session variable kt_login_id
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: var_export()
Not sure, but maybe some "includes" files haven´t been generated

  • Update to kichat: FAQ 2 - How to get my router to work with iChat?

kichat: FAQ 2 - How to get my router to work with iChat? December 2008 version 3
(Note to Hosts. to be removed on acceptance. Please use this to replace http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121775 )
Getting your router started with iChat.
Appropriate for using iChatAV 2 upwards. Edits have been made for iChat 4
    Glossary for this FAQ
Routers: Any configurable device that sits between your computer and the internet link you have. This includes Modems that Route as well as "routers"
Routers seem to fall into two categories
Those that work straight from the box. See Apple Article HT1787
NOTE :This Article has not been updated in content since Jan 04 Only being changed to an Article from the Previous Doc listing
Even then some list that they need tweaks.
    and those that do not.
This post will deal with what you may need to look at.
First off make sure your device is acting as a DHCP server. (if you are already on the internet you may not have to bother with this.)
Check in the Tiger System Preferences > Network Preference Pane, in the "Built in Ethernet" option from the "Show" drop down list.
In Leopard the Networks are listed on the left with icons. The Airport Option will need you to access the Advance Button for the Next bit.
Make sure the TCP/IP tab is the 'front' one. You should be able to see Configure IPv4 and it most likely reads Using DCHP. Make a note of your IP address. It will start 10.xxx.xxx.xxx or 192.168.xxx.xxx (the 'x' s will stand for any number between 1 and 255). The range 172.16.xxx.xxx is also a possible value at this point. Rarely used, but it is part of the RFC for Address Allocation for Private Internets.
Your router is most likely to be configurable from your browser. You will need to find the IP address to type into the browser from any Readme or PDF files that came on the install disk or visit the makers website and download a manual.
The Port Forward.com site lists many devices and clicking on one will take you to a list of Applications. This iChat will open an page that will start by telling you the defaults to access the device
Opening or Allowing ports. Several Methods not all devices have all of them.
    DMZ (Demilitarised Zone)
This is a less secure setting that basically opens all ports and points the incoming data to your computer. (not helpful if you have more than one computer on your LAN). It can be considered as an extreme form of Port Forwarding
Port Forwarding (also Virtual Server or Pin Holes)
These settings are usually found in an Advanced setting.
You may need to set an incoming IP address (Usually 0.0.0.0 to any outside server), a port that data will arrive on, the Inside computer's IP address (your computer) and the port it will deal with the data on and the protocol it will use.
See this pic for an example of the description above.
In this example shows that on some Port AND Protocols need to be listed.
iChat uses TCP and UDP so some devices will need the ports listed one by one and some settings done twice, once for each protocol. The example above has a "Both" setting
See Apple Article HT1507 Previously Doc 93208 for more information. This is the Tiger iChat 3 list. The same ports are needed for Leopard except for these changes
    My Note 2:
On the first link Note 1 under tables in that link would be better if it read:
" 1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP -
    except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP as well;
and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only. "
    Note 2
GoggleTalk needs port 5223 on TCP. Also note the Server name for iChat 3 set ups
    UPnP Universal Plug n Play.
This is a simple Plug and Play type of setting. iChat can find it's own way through a router if the device has this capability.
By Not doing Port Forwarding, Triggering or DMZ and enabling UPnP the application is allowed to control the modem and the ports that are open.
They close after the application has finished with them on a timed basis.
On some devices the number of "hops" (how far away the UPnP can be "seen") can be reduced from a default of 4)
    Trigger Ports
Some devices offer a security measure that works by a first or trigger port receiving a data packet and then opening further ports when accepted.
The first port for incoming Video or Audio invites is port 5678.
    Pre iChat 4
When you click on the invite window the process moves in to port 5060 (so these will need to be opened by the trigger port) for negotiating the final group of ports from the group of 20 (16384-16403 These will need to open when the trigger says so as well). Therefore port 5678 triggers ports 5678, 5060, 16384-16403. All on UDP. Port 5190 neeeds to trigger port 5190 for both TCP and UDP.
See this variation where only the ports listed above are completed.
The other single ports need to be set one by one in addition. (5220,5222, 5223 5297, 5298, 5353)Replace
    iChat 4
The port used in IChat 4 is port 16402 instead of port 5060. The group of 20 ports is reduced to 10 (16393-16402). This is because all the In and Out Audio and Video data is on one port. Other that than the settings are the same.
At this time there is no Info on the ports the Screen Sharing in iChat 4 uses.
    Wireless
Here you will have to read around but this Apple Article TA25949 Previously Doc 58514 might be a good starting place.
Essentially whether you are wireless or Ethernet to your routing device makes very little difference to the way you do things.
Your computer will get two IPs from a DHCP server if you are connected by both methods. (iChat does not like this)
    Multiple devices
Make sure only one is acting as a DHCP server. Make sure wireless devices are bridged properly.

kichat: FAQ 2 - How to get my router to work with iChat?
" 1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP -
    except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP as well;
and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only. "
