Editing an SWF or FLA file

I have both the FLA and SWF files for a website template I
bought. I am trying to edit the file in Flash CS4 using the
following instructions. But I never see any of this code - all I
get are errors and the Movie timeline. How do I get to the code to
modify it? I'm a total novice at Flash but I want to learn.
Flash CS3/CS4 - additional changes
There are some differences between Flash MX 2004 and Adobe
Flash CS3, and therefore you need to make some small changes to the
FLA file if you want to edit the FLA file
To do this you need to open the photographer.fla file, go to
the act layer, and then in the first frame you will see the
following code:
stop();
Stage.scaleMode = "noScale";
Stage.align = "T";
_root.pagen=0
_root.loadVariables("text.html", 0, "POST");
You should replace it with the code below and then save the
changes and export it as an SWf file.
stop();
Stage.scaleMode = "noScale";
Stage.align = "T";
_root.pagen=0
_root.loadVariables("text.html");

That's a problem, since the format changes between jpg and swf when converted
probably won't just go back to their previous state, less the changed section.
The converter you have, is it a freeware to convert swf to fla; or what does it say
that it can do? In some cases, a flash video can be copied (perhaps illegally)
through use of a software such as Ambrosia's SnapZ ProX and a movie of any-
thing playing on your Mac can be copied. So, a movie could be paused at the
end where the unwanted content exists, so the copy would not have it recorded.
Snapz ProX - Ambrosia Software: (not freeware, has 'free trial' version)
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/
Otherwise, there are a few shareware and freeware editors for swf content; to
some degree or another they either convert content or allow some editing.
And this may only work as far as the item's creator allowed, if the file is locked.

I'd tried some basic editing of swf files a few years ago, and was able to only
convert the string of images into single-frame jpgs and work on each one,
but could not get them back into an swf. Perhaps graphic converter or other
software could do something for these; but I am inexperienced in all that.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • NON-Flash User Wants to Edit and "Recompile" an SWF or FLA file...help??

    Hello!! Although I am NOT new to Mac, I have NEVER attempted to edit an SWF file and I'm seeking an EASY way to do so. I think I might be CLOSE but I'm wasting time trying to figure it out so I'm posting here for some help...hopefully!! :-))
    I also apologize because I did NOT know where to post this question so KINDLY direct me if I have posted in the wrong place!
    Soooo, I have an complete, original .swf flash movie. It is a Holiday greeting but the VERY LAST frame has text that is NOT RELEVANT and I wish to change that text.
    It appears that the text I want to change is (I do NOT know the correct term) a "layer" of graphic content for the last frame.
    So, I have done TWO THINGS: I have used the Flash Decompiler app to (1) create an .fla file and (2) DECOMPILED the entire .swf extracting ALL the resources/objects that are used to create the original .swf animation. I have NO IDEA what to do with the .fla file...I know it is used to edit the animation but I do not have software to manipulate the file.
    BUT, in the decompiled files, I HAVE LOCATED the one resource...a TEXT RESOURCE...that I wish to change. This extracted text resource is named "Dynamic text 293.swf", saved as in .swf format.
    Now HERE is where I am STUCK!!...and I THINK this is the direction I would like to go:
    1. Open the Dynamic text 293.swf file in a format that allows me to EDIT THE TEXT I wish to change. HOW DO I DO THAT?? Can I convert it to a jpeg, edit the text, and then BACK to an .swf file?? Can I simply CREATE a JPEG and somehow SAVE IT as an .swf file to REPLACE the Dynamic text 293.swf file? Is there an EASIER/DIFFERENT way to edit the text in this Dynamic text 293.swf file?
    2. After editing the text in the Dynamic text 293.swf file, HOW DO I "RECOMPILE" the folder of alllll the extracted resources from the original .swf animation, NOW with this NEW/EDITED Dynamic text 293.swf file, and RECREATE the full .swf with the changes I made??
    Again, I do NOT have FLASH or MACROMEDIA or any of those apps :-/ I DO have the .fla file conversion AND have isolated the SINGLE extracted resource file (Dynamic text 293.swf) that I want to edit.
    THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP Greatly appreciated!!

  • How to edit default text in fla file

    I'm using an open-source Flash mp3 player. In comes in two swf versions. One plays a list of songs and displays the album cover(s). The other version just plays one song. The problem is that the single-song version loads some default text that I want to change (I was able to do this in the other version via the external playlist file). I'm a Flash newbie, and when I open the fla file the player's author provides, I can't find where this default text is located. (The playlist version works fine; its default text relates to what the user will get when they click on the file titles.) Links:
    Playlist version that works OK - http://www.keithpurtell.com/kthings/fripp.htm
    Single song version with wrong default text - http://www.keithpurtell.com/kthings/bjcole.htm

    SOLUTION:
    For the benefit of anyone else using the XSPF mp3 player, here is how to change default text. The XSPF player file is deployed to your server with your target mp3 files, whatever playlists you have created, and a file ending with the .as extension. The .as file contains the default text and can be changed with a good (free) text editor like NotePad++.

  • Possible to edit without the main.fla file?

    About 10 days ago I purchased a flash template for my photography business. At the time I knew zilch about flash and actionscript, so I wasn't totally aware of what to look for before purchasing it. Here is what it looks like dcpphotographer.com
    My problem with the site is that scrolling is terrible, especially on smaller screens. My monitor is 28inches so all the pictures layout fine without having to scroll at all, but then my friends with smaller monitors told me about the scrolling problem, how it just goes straight to the bottom then snaps back to the top. My file directory has a ton of .as files, and I've looked through some of them, and even deleted some from the file directory just to see if it'd have an effect on the website. The ones I temporarily deleted, changed nothing to the performance of the website.
    Then I saw that they did not provide me with the main.fla file, only the main.swf file. So, is the scroll behavior that I want to change contained within that main.fla file? Making it impossible for me to try and fix it since I don't have the main.fla file? Is that what controls all the .as files or something? Sorry for my ignorance, but web development is not my area of expertise, hence my reasons for buying a template. Any help would be appreciated.

    Great thanks thats what I thought. So I'm going to demand a refund from the company I got the template from since its been over a week and they haven't made the fix yet, and if they don't even give me the option to try and fix it myself then I should get a refund since there was nothing in the preview file showing that the scrolling was so bad because the sample galleries only had 15-20 pictures so no scrolling was necessary on their preview, and therefore no way to know it was so bad.

  • Creating .swf from .fla file using ADT command line

    Dear Adobe Community and Moderators:
    Is it possible to use the ADT command line to directly compile an .fla file into an .swf file? Context: I have an app created in Flash Pro CS55 (6 months worth of work), but now found Adobe has dropped Flash Pro in favor of Flash Builder or Flex. I have some native extensions I want to use for iOS, but they require Air 3.1 to compile (swf-version=14) i.e. using the MessageUI framework in a static .a library for an Air app. Flash Pro CS55's top end limit seems to be swf-version=13 (Flash 11). Because of heavy investment in time and energy into our Air app in Flash Pro, it's not feasible to convert to Flex by end of week. I tried creating an .swc file, and taking the library.swf from that, but alas, a catch-22, Flash Pro CS55 only compiles to swf-version=13.
    Is there any way to either (a) directly compile my root .swf file (from the .fla file) using a command line (so I can use ADT from Air 3.1 SDK) or (b) some way I can marry a native extension I've found I can use on GitHub which is swf-version=14? Again, my issue is that I have to use Air 3.1 since only it supports iOS5.
    Any thoughts, suggestions, comments are highly appreciated (including if it's not possible to do what I'm trying to do).
    Thank you Adobe community in advance,
    Alex

    I have the exact same question, please respond if you hold the answer to this! mxmlc won't work for me since I have created too many assets within the fla already! Thanks!

  • How to compile swf from fla files and folders?

    Hey,
    I have decompiled a swf file and got a fla file and also all kind of folders including action scripts.
    How do I run this? I mean if I make some changes how do I convert it back to a swf file?
    I created a swf file from one fla file but I got a file that was like 20x less in size then the original. I think it was not using the files in the folders.
    Thanks!

    open the fla and publish.  if that doesn't work, you have errors in your decompile.

  • Create a single .swf or .fla file?

    Hello,
    I and an experienced graphic designer who does not know how to use Flash but could easily create a flash piece with mouse changes to state from your Catalyst software. I am very, very excited about your product! I would prefer not to have to learn Flash as it seems way too complicated! In the near future, I need to create simple Flash for our Digital Reader. The files that Catalyst created for me when I selected "Publish to SWF" will not work with my digital reader as it needs to be a single .fla or .swf file not a folder of files. Hope this is not a dumb question, but how would I get Catalyst to create a single file for me to upload and play in my digital reader (which is Zmags)? IF that is possible, I will be in heaven. :O)
    Thank you!
    Kristina

    I would like to know that too...very disappointing if that is not possible.
    I need to embed SWF files on our intranet etc., and I'm not able to upload folders and assets to a web server.
    Are there any software out there that can compile the assets etc. into a single file?

  • Import SWF to FLA file

    SWF files created from Camtasia, when imported to Flash 8,
    show red rectangles on some frames. What causes this and can it be
    fixed?

    I doubt there is a video for anything this basic, but you can try searching.  I recommend practicing in a copy of the file you intend to place them in so that you don't lose that file due to a learning curve.
    If you open the fla's of your navbar, etc, you want copy the timeline.  So you select all the layers and frames of the main timeline, right click the selection and choose Copy Frames.  Then, in the destination file you should create a new movieclip symbol.  Select the first frame of the new symbol, right click and select Paste Frames.  All of the layers and frames that you copied should appear in the timeline.
    If you happen to have library symbols with the same names in the different files you'll be combining, that could cause a problem as it will prompt you as to whether you want to replace one with the other.  So it is best to rename any such symbols before copying them.

  • I can't for the life of me get a SWF or FLA file to play in IE 8.

    What in the world do I have to do to get a flash file to play in IE 8. Dreamweaver can't embed it correctly or any other code I can find on the internet can do it. This appears to be the result of either a IE 8 update or a Flash player update.
    Please please help.

    The code to embed a flash file is this:
    <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="550" height="400" id="movie_name" align="middle">
        <param name="movie" value="movie_name.swf"/>
        <!--[if !IE]>-->
        <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="movie_name.swf" width="550" height="400">
            <param name="movie" value="movie_name.swf"/>
        <!--<![endif]-->
            <a href="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash">
                <img src="http://www.adobe.com/images/shared/download_buttons/get_flash_player.gif" alt="Get Adobe Flash player"/>
            </a>
        <!--[if !IE]>-->
        </object>
        <!--<![endif]-->
    </object>
    All you need is to change the "movie_name.swf" in the above code (bolded for easy recognition) to the actual file you want to embed.

  • Unable to convert swf files into fla files

    Hi,
      I tried using Dreamweaver to convert a SWF file into a FLA file so I can edit it in CS 5.  But when I right clicked the placeholder for the file, it doesn't have an "Edit in Flash"  option. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks very much,
    Rosemary

    According to http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flash/cs/using/WSd60f23110762d6b883b18f10cb1fe1af6-7f12a.html# WSc78c5058ca073340dcda9110b1f693f21-7acf
    asset is reflected in Flash immediately.
    Edit a SWF file from Dreamweaver in Flash
    If you have both Flash and Dreamweaver installed, you can select a SWF file in a Dreamweaver document and use Flash to edit it. Flash does not edit the SWF file directly; it edits the source document (FLA file) and re‑exports the SWF file.
    In Dreamweaver, open the Property inspector (Window > Properties).
    In the Dreamweaver document, do one of the following:
      Click the SWF file placeholder to select it; then in the Property inspector click Edit.
      Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Macintosh) the placeholder for the SWF file, and select Edit With Flash from the context menu.
    Dreamweaver switches the focus to Flash, and Flash attempts to locate the Flash authoring file (FLA) for the selected SWF file. If Flash cannot locate the Flash authoring file, you are prompted to locate it."
    But I don't see "Edit with Flash" option.  Maybe because I have a trial version of Dreamweaver?

  • Exporting to a .swf or .fla from InDesign CS6 - issues with timeline when opened in Flash.

    Hello,
    Looking for help with exporting files for Flash. I have tried both .swf and fla exports from InDesign for the animations I have created. The .swf file will play fine in Flash player but I am having no luck using the .swf or .fla file in Flash. The .fla file will open in Flash but there is no time-line. I can import the .swf file into Flash, but again there is no timeline - all the graphics and elements are visible in the library.
    - Is there a particular way the file(s) have to be exported from InDesign in order for them to appear with a time line in Flash?
    - Are there particular do's and dont's when it comes to creating InDesign files that are going to be used as Flash animation?
    Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Jamie

    The page turning animations in an exported swf are accomplished via ActionScript—they are not timeline based tween animations. You might be able to decompile the swf and get to the code, but I've never tried it. Google SWF decompiler.
    When you export to fla the animation ActionScript code is not included, so you lose the page turn animations. Each spread is saved as a MovieClip and the clips appear on sequential keyframes of the root timeline. With an fla it's up to you to write any animation code.

  • Freeware To Convert .swf or .fla to Quicktime or .png or .jpg for iMovie?

    Hi. Just wondering if anyone's aware of any Freeware (or economical Shareware) for converting Flash's .swf or .fla files into a Quicktime file or even .png or .jpg's for import into iMovie. I know of a couple app's like this for Windows but need one for Mac's. Thanks for any assistance.

    Actually, go here...
    http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimediaand_Graphics/Misc__Graphics_Tools/Swf_Avi_Convert____Free_Converter__.html
    That will get .swf to .avi(which is QT compatible) And it is free.
    Or
    http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimediaand_Graphics/Video_and_AnimationTools/VIDEOzilla.html
    Which is 30 dollars.
    Let me know if either of these apps will work for you.

  • Crop multiple swf or fla in a folder

    Is there a way that I can crop a specific area of multiple swf or fla files that are in folder? With a script or program? I tried many programs but all are for file by file..

    I want to load these swf files inside html file not in a flash file. So i need them to crop them.
    As there is not a "crop tool" in flash.. Can I resize the document and re-locate them with a script? Which is close with what crop do approximately.
    thanks

  • Loading external swf into Fla. not working

    I have created a Flash page that loads an external swf into
    it when you click a button. The swf loads but the actionscript
    assigned to the swf which scrolls images across does not work. When
    i open the swf in a browser window with the direct link to it the
    scroll works but inside the fla file the swf loads but the scroll
    buttons are not working at all. Would this be something in the
    actionscripting in the swf or fla file. Any advice would be greatly
    appreciated, thank you.

    var imageRequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("my_gallery.swf");
    var imageLoader:Loader = new Loader();
    imageLoader.load(imageRequest);
    addChild(imageLoader);
    is as3 code.  that won't work in your as2 project.
    here's the equivalent in as2:
    this.createEmptyMovieClip("targetMC",this.getNextHighestDepth());
    targetMC.loadMovie("my_gallery.swf");

  • Beginner Question re: SWF files and FLA files

    Hi,
    Im new to flash. I have some templates (in FLA format with all supporting files...xml; html; and the swf file). When using html templates, I can modify the content easily by simply adding or changing the text <p>original text</p> to <p>steve custom text</p> and so on.
    My issue is Im trying to modify the content of the fla files into a new swf file but do not know how to access the text, background or images the tempalte is currently producing. The timeline at the bottom doesnt show objects and their timelines like the basic tutorials show me.
    Is there a way to access the content of of an fla file or perhaps the content of an swf file? I think the swf file is like a jpeg coverted from RAW, meaning its the end product and the source file is where the modify is done.
    Am I swimming in the deep with sharks?
    Thanks!

    hmm..so if the template ive downloaded depicts a green ball bouncing across an orange  background(swf file). The objects (green ball) and the background (simply overlay colored orange) is embedded into the FLA AS3 code?
    not necessarily.  they could be created with code, they could be created with the tools in the fla and they could be loaded bitmaps.
    To be clear these objects (in my example: ball and background) are not external jpegs (or similar file type like png) which I can open, edit, then allow the code to access and utilize the new object. For example, change the ball into a square and changes it color to purple and then change the background to pink via PS or illstr.
    In short, Im having trouble trying to find the objects which are being manipulated by the code. My current perspective with templates is to modify the image or text by accessing the files delivered with the template. If the .html commands to place image221.jpeg in certain div, I would just open the images files, find image221.jpeg, modifiy the image and then save it as image221.jpeg. Of course I can create a new image save it as steve123.jpeg, save it to the images folder and then modify the code to access the new file by using its new name.
    This is what Im trying to accomplish with my flash template but cant find the source objects .
    Im getting the impression this cant be done.
    that's almost certainly incorrect.
    My final question is then, where are source images or text or movie files stored?
    noone can say without direct inspection.
    Is it possible they are on third party servers on the web?
    no
    Are they imbedded in the code?
    maybe yes, maybe no.
    I can only assume if they are stored on my drives (in an external format) that I would be able to access them.
    correct.  more specifically, they would have to be in the directory with your embedding html and swf or a subdirectory.
    If however, they are on a a third part web site or embedded into the code, then I may be in way over my head.
    you can assume this is not the case.
    so, open the fla in flash.  click control/test.  click view and make sure bandwidth profiler and streaming graph are checked.  you should then be able to see the main timeline as the swf plays.  note the main timeline frame where you see the object(s) you want to edit.
    close the test environment and go to that main timeline frame and start sleuthing to see if the objects were created in flash.  you can also click on the first object in the library and arrow down looking for the object(s) you want to edit to see if they were created without code.  if you find them, note their library name and possibly linkage id or class.  use movie explorer to search for those names.
    but, to be sure, it can be very difficult to edit templates.  i've not seen one yet that was made by a competent developer and i've worked on dozens of them.
