Editing Audio!  Seriously losing patience :)

Hi there,
I was after any advice or input anyone could give me
regarding audio editing.
I have tried to do this in two ways, both times, similar
problems seem to occur. I've tried either a single large piece of
audio (recorded in audacity, import to captivate as wav file) or
smaller sections. I spent all day yesterday using the audio >
edit > project function within captivate to match my audio to
the slide lengths, and amend the slide lengths appropriately. I've
come to listen to it today, and the whole audio has gone whoopsie!
it starts off okay, but captivate is repeating and looping certain
sections of audio, sections are in the wrong order. So all the work
I did yesterday is kind of wasted.
I'd really appreciate any advice on the cause of this issue,
or suggestions as to the best method of working. I'm still fairly
new to captivate so am open to any suggestions. I am creating a
training project where I have recorded the screens within my
application and recorded the audio (either in small sections, or in
one block as a whole). I didn't think it would be practical to
record each slides audio individually as some slides could be very
short - just clicking on one button for example.

Here's the technique I've been using in software demo movies
that have a few PowerPoint intro and wrapup slides before and after
the demo:
As others have suggested, I record in Captivate without
narration. I then go through my project, slide by slide, and record
the narration for each one by pressing F5 to open the audio editor,
F5 again to start recording, and F5 again to stop recording. I
usually edit the audio right there to remove long pauses, sounds of
breathing, etc., as well as the audible "click" at the very
beginning of the track.
If I need the narration to span several slides, such as the
Login sequence in which the user enters her User ID, then her
password, and then clicks "Login", I first (temporarily) extend the
duration of the last slide in this sequence. I then select "Audio
> Record from this Slide." In the "To:" field, I enter the
number of the last slide in this sequence, and record my narration.
After I edit the audio and click OK, C3 distributes the audio track
across the specified slides. Finally, I reduce the duration of the
last slide in the sequence to accommodate the portion of the audio
track that C3 placed on this slide. (I find it necessary to
manipulate the duration of the last slide in the sequence, because
if the recording exceeds the total duration of the slides C3 simply
stops recording.)
It's a bit tedious, I admit. But so far it seems to work
every time. I have not yet tried "Audio > Edit Timing >
Project" to adjust how the audio is distributed across the slides
in the sequence.
Also, I usually record narration by reading a printed script
that I wrote in Microsoft Word (double-spaced; heading for each
slide or slide sequence), so I am not looking at the screen while I
record the narration. Sometimes, for a multi-slide sequence I will
copy my script into the "Notes" area of each slide in the sequence,
because in "Record from this Slide" mode C3 always shows a preview
of the slides in the sequence. I find it helpful in this situation
to watch the preview while I speak.

  • How to send FCP edited audio clips for processing in Soundtrack?

    Hello
    How do I send just the edited audio clips from hour long files to be processed in Soundtrack from Final Cut?
    I need help as I'm trying to adjust some edited audio clips in Soundtrack Pro but when I send them from FCP to Soundtrack - it opens the whole original audio file and then any adjustments I apply in Soundtrack are being processed over the whole audio file not just the short edited audio clip that I want to adjust.
    Normally I don't mind as my scenes are usually short and Soundtrack analysis over the whole scenes audio is usually desirable, but this projects files have been transfered from tapes as hour long AVI files (all the tapes clips transfered into one hour long files) and every FCP edited audio clip I send is being treated as an hour long audio file in Soundtrack.
    I'm sure there's a simple answer for settings but I haven't been able to find it.  Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks Javi, my sequence is an hour and half duration so what I'm trying to do is save processing time in Soundtrack by just processing adjustments on the few audio clips that need processing.
    I have set Soundtrack to open referenced audio only and with 5 sec in and out handles, but it still imports the whole original audio file into Soundtrack timeline upto the selected clip, I then double click in Soundtrack on the clip in brackets, and it then selects just the audio clip I want to adjust, then Soundtrack will just process on the edited clip but when I 'render to action' it seems to apply changes to whole original audio file - taking longer than I want.... frustrating
    Also the sound always sounds very different in FCP than Soundtrack even after 'rendering to action' and rendering in FCP... this is not the easy workflow I expect from such expensive software programs, I understood that they work together in a fully integrated way, what's the problem! This is wasting my precious time and preventing me from editing not helping me, this is a common problem and yet I can find no help in the user manual - I'm not impressed!

  • Cap3: Edit Audio Timing display's thumbnail is too small

    Hello ... Regarding Captivate 3 ...
    I'm trying to time my voice-over audio to a series of
    application scenario slides using the Edit Audio Timing display,
    but am finding it extremely difficult because the small changes in
    my slides (radio button selections, text input, dropmenu
    selections, etc.) are too small to detect on the miniscule
    thumbnail used in the display.
    Is this poor interface design, or is there a setting
    somewhere that allows me to increase the size of the thumbnail?
    I've looked around, but can't find one. How do you handle syncing
    audio to stretches of small screen changes?

    I won't argue as to whether this is good, bad or indifferent
    interface design. But it is what it is and as far as I know it
    cannot be changed. At first I thought perhaps we might see a change
    if right-clicking the image and choosing "Zoom in". But all that
    does is zooms in on the waveform.
    This doesn't help any, but you may wish to make the
    development staff aware that you would like to see the behavior
    change in a future version. You may do this by
    clicking
    here and completing the form you should find there.

  • Is there and ipad app that allows you to record and edit audio, but can record in the background?  This would be to record voiceover auditions/podcasts while reading a script

    Hi wondering if anyone might be able to help me out.  I am an audio engineer and my wife is a voiceover artist.  We just got the ipad thinking she could record her voiceover auditions on the go, but we can't for the life of us figure out how to record audio while reading a script off of her email.
    Looking for an app that:
    Either can record audio while in the background (garageband cannot)
    OR Import text (copy paste I guess?) to read while recording
    The app needs to  be able to edit audio and export or email out an MP3 - by edit audio I mean trim, fades, and move around sections.
    Anyone have any thoughts on how to do this?  I have been looking around the web for answers for hours and can't find any.  Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi-  I've done a lot of research in this area and actually am just finishing a book on this subject which will soon be in the iBookstore.
    The best app is TwistedWave.  It allows easy editing and recording, and also allows you record while you are in another app (such as a script your agent sent in your email)
    I recommend MiC by Apogee as your microphone, available at the Apple store.

  • Edit Audio dialog box won't open

    I cannot get the Edit Audio dialog box open -- I've double-clicked and right-clicked the audio in the timeline, tried the menu Audio > Edit > Slide..., poked around in Settings and Preferences but cannot find anything amiss in there.
    I don't get any error message. Nothing happens at all.
    I'm using Captivate 4 on a Windows XP machine, I've done a few projects before and never encountered this problem.
    Any ideas??
    Urgent help would be much appreciated -- have to get two project done in the next 24 hours.

    Try clobbering your preferences file.
    Close Captivate
    Open Windows Explorer
    Navigate to the location below:
    C:\Documents and Settings\*YOUR USER NAME HERE*\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Captivate
    Delete the file named captivate_v40.dat
    Restart Captivate and see if the problem is solved.

  • Edit audio window not visible in Captivate 5 for Mac

    After putting closed captions into a project I went back to edit them and now the Edit Audio window doesn't appear at all. The captions and audio playback fine on preview. When I go to the Edit Audio window the rest of the application is disabled as if the window was open, but it doesn't appear anywhere. I've reset the workspace, rebooted, uninstalled and reinstaled, and created a new project, imported audio to a slide and still see no Edit window.

    Also, I've downloaded a trial version of Captivate on a different computer and the same project file plays fine and I get the Edit Audio window and Closed Captions. But even with an uninstall and new download of Captivate on the old computer these are invisible in *all* projects on that computer. All settings at default. What local settings could be doing this on that computer? Other Captivate pop-up windows work fine.

  • Premiere Pro CC crashes when editing audio- any solutions?

    Adobe Premiere Pro CC crashes nearly every time I try to edit audio, keyframe it in certain spots, etc, etc, with the error message that there has been an "unexpected problem" and the program must "force quit." Sometimes my work is saved, sometimes it isn't. And then I have to re-name my saved file, so I often end up with upwards of 15 different project files because I cannot edit audio without this program crashing. I see I'm not the only one--what is Adobe doing to fix this bug-riddled program? It's impossible to get anything done!
    I'm using this program on a MAC, 6-Core Intel Xeon Processor. MAC OS X Lion 10.7.5.
    I'm ready to lose my mind.

    I am having a very similar experience.....I have been working in Adobe Premiere Pro for well over 8 years and have always had issues with crashes when working with audio files, keyframing, transition placement, trimming and so on. I have had nightmares with some projects that I am having crashes every change I do and it seems once you get an issue with a project it only gets worst. I have worked on a number of different systems in regards to hardware and get the same issues, OS has been Windows 7 64bit for number of years. I would have expected Adobe to have been able to smooth this out by now but it just keeps rearing its ugly head when I`m on a deadline crunch.
    I try to never work with Mp3s and always request wav but it doesn't seem to matter in the long run.
    Just wanted to let you know you are not the only one and I am having a serous issue with this problem once again!
    Please help Adobe....audio is an issue with Premiere Pro for a lot of us....thanks!

  • Editing Audio from Timeline in Another Program

    Often, one will want to edit the Audio on the Timeline, in another application, like Adobe Audition. Premiere versions allow for this to be done easily, and with exacting control.
    Let's say that one has dozens of edited Clips on the Timeline, and they wish to edit ALL of the Audio. * Editing those individual Clips is easy, but how does one edit them all in one file, which will then replace the original Audio in the Clips?
    The best way to accomplish this is to Export, or Share the Timeline as an Audio Only file. This Export/Share will be slightly different, depending on the exact Premiere program, and even on the version of that Premiere Program. Often, the Audio-only Export/Share is from the MS AVI Export/Share screen. One would choose Export Audio, leaving Export Video unchecked. If Multiplexing does not automatically set to "None," choose that now.
    For this "round-trip" process, the Audio file format is very important. The ideal choice of Export/Share is PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit. This will yield an uncompressed Audio file, that almost every Audio editing program will easily handle, and is also the format, that one will want to Export, or Save from the Audio editor, for the second leg of our round-trip.
    Import, or Open that resultant PCM/WAV in the Audio editing program, and edit, as is needed. When done, just Export, or Save (depends on the program) that edited Audio as a PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit. In some Audio editing programs, this will be listed as WAV (Uncompressed). The Sample-Rate and Bit-Depth are important, as the 48KHz and 16-bit are the ideal for any flavor of Premiere, and though Conforming will be necessary for editing, it will be easy on the program, and there will be no issues. Stay away from any compressed Audio formats/CODEC's, like MPEG/MP3. You do not want to throw away precious data at any step. That is why we use PCM/WAV for the Export/Share, and then the Export/Save from the Audio editing program.
    When done, just Import that resultant PCM/WAV into Premiere. Wait a moment for all Conforming to complete, and then drag that WAV to the Timeline, on a free Audio Track that matches your WAV's Channel-count, i.e. a 2-channel Audio Track for Stereo, or a 1-channel Audio Track for Mono (these must match in Premiere). For more detail on channel-count and Audio Tracks, see this ARTICLE.
    Now comes a personal preference for completing this round-trip. I like to leave my original Audio, just in case I change my mind. Gathering up and Trimming the original Audio can be a tedious task. As I have placed my edited WAV onto an empty Audio Track, I just go to Window>Audio Mixer, and Mute any/all Audio Tracks, containing my original Audio. It's still there, if I ever need it, but is now Muted.

    * Sometimes we want part of the Timeline's Audio, but that part spans multiple Clips. There is no need to Export/Share the entire Timeline, and then Trim it. Just set the WAB (Work Area Bar) to the part that we do want, and make sure to choose "Work Area" in the Export/Share settings dialog.
    Also, and especially when doing just a segment, covered by the WAB, I like to position the CTI (Current Time Indicator) or Playhead (CS 5.5) at the beginning of the WAB, with Snap ON. As I drag my edited WAV to the free Audio Track, it will Snap into place, right at the beginning of the WAB.

    There isn't any simply way to where you want to go.
    You can export each track separately. Switch off the audibility for all the tracks except one. Export the track. Repeat for each of the tracks in the timeline. Export the video for reference.

  • Cp7 - can't edit audio

    I have recently upgraded to Cp7 (running version 7.0.0.118) and when I try to add audio or edit audio the audio box doesn't appear but Cp is locked as if it is the active window and my only option is to use task manager to close Cp7.  From what I can tell I am using the latest version.
    Any suggestions?

    If you hit the ESCAPE key when Cp siezes up, does it return control to you again?  If so, then your issue sounds like you might have been using a multiple monitor setup and then you changed your monitor orientation or went back to a single monitor.
    You can try to recreate the multi-monitor setup and left-right orientation, then drag the Slide Audio dialog over top of the main window again.

    First, be sure this is actually a problem for you. If it is
    just the "idea" that the file is larger that bothers you, try to
    ignore it. But if it is affecting your machine's performance while
    working with (editing) the project, then it is an issue that needs
    to be corrected, so read on ...
    Captivate creates and maintains two file-types for each audio
    clip. One is a WAV file for editing purposes, and the other is a
    MP3 (created from the WAV) which is used in the published output.
    When you edit the audio, the newly changed WAV file is probably
    added to your library, creating the larger working file - it should
    not affect your output SWF file.
    If file-size is excessive after completing your changes -
    repeat, after completing your changes - you can usually affect a
    huge decrease in file size by the following actions.
    1) Use FILE > SAVE AS to create a copy, to protect the
    original
    2) On the new copy, go to AUDIO > ADVANCED AUDIO
    3) Select all audio files on your slides (CTRL + A is the
    shortcut)
    4) Export all to an empty folder - be sure to include both
    file-types
    5) With ALL audio still selected, use the "DELETE" icon to
    delete all
    *Note: First, make a note of which audio file goes with each
    slide
    6) SAVE your project, with NO audio
    7) IMPORT the previously exported MP3 files back into proper
    slides
    **Note: Captivate will automatically reproduce the WAV files.
    8) SAVE once more - your CP file size should be much smaller
    now.
    Hope this helps. Another member and I recently used these
    steps to reduce one of his CP files from nearly160Mb to less than
    55 Mb, and I'm confident it will work for you as well.

    I'm trying to edit audio in Final Cut and simply want to chop parts of the audio. I'm editing in the Viewer. The audio does not appear in the canvas when I double click.
    Is there a way to simply chop audio without using Keyframes? Seems like this should be easy. What am I missing?

    Welcome to the forum.
    If what you want to do is simply cut out or separate and lower the volume, lock the picture track with the padlocks on the left side of the timeline and use the blade tool. I only suggest locking the picture so that you don't have a lot of unwanted cuts clogging up your timeline.
    Keyframes are great for regulating volume in a shot, but sometimes it's easier to just slice if you want to remove something. Remember that you'll want to replace the roomtone anywhere you make a lift.

    The above document includes information that you can add four types of markers by using the Audio Editor in Presenter and one of the marker types is mouse-click animation. I can't find a way to do it in reality. The only way to insert this type of market is in Edit Sync dialog, not in Edit Audio. This requires resynchronisation of the whole audio instead of just adding one marker. In Edit Audio dialog I only have markers of type "Wait for user" and "Go to slide".

    Your delta setup for the related master and transaction data needs to be reinit.
    What happens is when you init. the delta and subsequent delta is all maintained in your source system
