Editing authorware 3-created files in version 7?

I have several kiosks in a museum installation running old 1996-era powermacs hosting a quiz program created with Authorware 3 on Mac OS 7.5.
This software actually still works fine and it has to control outboard hardware via a serial port so it seems to me it might be hard to migrate it to PC, but these macs will not last forever either.. I want to upgrade the computers to windows boxes that can use USB touchscreens and still use the same quiz software.
I have A7 on an XP box, and I've migrated all of the original authorware files from the macs, which actually still have a full version of A3 installed. I can edit and package the quiz on the macs using A3 without issues, other than being quite a tedious task..  The original unpackaged quiz program files I use with A3 on the macs have no file extensions, and even if I rename them something like *.a3m on the PC, A7 will not recognize them and seems to crash immediately, saying "error 300" or something along those lines.
Is there any way to convert, rename, import, etc these files so I can edit & package them using A7?
Thanks!
Jeff

Having done this frequently, though in the fading past...
First you'll need to convert the Mac v3 files to the Windows version of Authorware 3 (careful, they could be Authorware v3.5 files, in which case you'll need to convert to Windows Authorware 3.5). THEN you can step up on the Windows side to version 4, then version 5...then jump to 7.
I have all these versions. If you need help with the upgrade process, drop me a line at erik at capemedia dot net and happy to take a look and quote (nominal).
However, the serial port control by the current Mac files throws a flag for me. Do you have any idea what is being controlled via the serial port? Could it be just the touch screen connection to the Mac is done via th serial port? I bet that's it...unless the Mac is hooked up to some other piece of hardware via that port, I bet Authorware has nothing to do with it. If you just need things to work on a Windows/USB touchscreen, it seems likely a simple upgrade to A'ware 7 should handle that (though no guarantees ;-)

  • I am unable to edit a form created with LiveCycle version 8.5 with LiveCycle Version ES1.

    I am trying to edit a form created with LiveCycle version 8.08.2073 (installed with Adobe Pro 8).  I am using LiveCycle version ES (installed with Adobe Pro 9).  I can open the fhe form, but the tools are greyed out.  It apears the file is locked for editing, but I cannot determine where/how to unlock it.

    You should try to start in safe mode which runs a file check. You hold the shift key down during a start up till there is a progress bar towards thr bottom of the screen. This start will take a longer time than normal. In safe mode try the functioins you are having problems with to see if there is an improvement. Some links below to read.

  • Editing a form created with trial version of XI

    I have some forms that I have created with the trial version of Adobe XI and now I need to edit them. I keep getting an error that says the file is restricted and asks me to save a copy that is not restricted. When I save the copy, it won't let me edit that copy either.... HELP!!!!

    Pay close attention to the saving process. When you save a copy, it makes a NEW COPY of the file, and leaves you with the old file open. You therefore have to CLOSE the file you have open, and OPEN THE COPY.
    In general, be sure to save PDF files BEFORE adding the special rights, because you sometimes can't go back at all.

  • How can I attribute my edits before aperture to the raw files as versions?

    Hi,
    I am in the middle of importing all my files (approx 100,000) into aperture. I have previously made edits of my best images and in some cases have several edits for one 'master' file. How can I attribute or link the edits to the master files? I have followed a simple nomenclature, where the camera raw file was say bfes1001.tif, I would name the files bfes1001e1.psd or bfes10001e1-small.jpg, bfes1001e1-epson7600.psd. So my question is really two parts, first is there a way to link my old edits to the master raw files, and secondly is there a way to import photoshop files without flattening them? I can't image throwing away all that time making masks etc. If there is no way to import a layered photoshop file then is there a way to make an association to the files if I leave them outside of Aperture (althought that seems to defeat a big part of Aperture)?
    Thanks,
    Eric

    This is not a method suited to automation, but what you can do is:
    1) Import original RAW into Aperture.
    2) Edit in external editor - it creates a new version based on PSD or TIFF (you choose in options).
    3) Kill external editor, replace created TIFF file with your new "master" tiff (or PSD). To do this just open the Aperture Library package using "Show Package Contents" in finder, do the same for the Project package held within the library, and finding the new TIFF version of your file. You could either replace the TIFF file before you return to Aperture form the editor or replace all the TIFF files with Aperture closed. The name must be identical. If you have a TIFF or PSD not in RGB mode Aperture will not like you much and probably crash whenever you go to view the picture.
    That seems the most space-efficient way to me and keeps Aperture understanding that your edited TIFFS are versions of a particular master.

  • Is there a way to open and edit my iMovie HD files with iMovie '09 and later versions?

    I am getting ready to update an older iMac from Tiger to Mountain Lion. (Long overdue, I know) I have several files that I created using iMovie HD. After I update, will the new versions of iMovie be able to open and edit my iMovie HD files?

    I don't think that iMovie 11 is backwards compatible with iMovie HD 6.
    If you still have the install disks for iMovie Hd 6 (iLife 6) you can keep it alongside the newer version:
    Happily this is easily achieved, but it has to be done backwards.
    Delete iMovie 11 (just drag it to the trash). Now install iMovie 6 from the iLife 6 install disks. Update it to iMovie 6.0.3.
    Now re-install iMovie 11. This automatically moves iMovie 6 into a folder it creates in your Applications folder called iMovie Previous Version.
    Then reinstall iMovie 11.
    iMovie 6 works great with iDVD 7.
    Now you have them both, and you can have both in the Dock as well.
    Alternatively you could try this method, suggested by poster Uitech:
    Open a terminal and type "touch /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iLife011.plist"
    (No quotes)
    Install iMovieHD6 from the iLife 6 install disk.
    This works with both Leopard and Snow Leopard Macs.

  • Why can't I create a new version of a photo edited in an external application, without Aperture making a new copy of the newly created Tiff?

    When Aperture creates a new version from a RAW file, no new master file is created.  This makes total sense and I understand why.
    When I edit a photo in an external editor (Photoshop CS6) from within Aperture, Aperture creates a Tiff file to edit in Photoshop and saves it along with the RAW original once I have finished editing it in Photoshop.  I understand why this is necessary too.  So far so good.
    But if I then ask Aperture to create a new version from the newly created image edited via Photoshop, it creates another new Tiff.  I can't see why this is necessary.  Aperture should be able to apply further new Aperture edits to the newly created Tiff in the same way that it creates new versions from a RAW file without duplicating the master - by remembering any new 'recipe' changes applied to the Tiff.  It only needs to remember the edits made as the Tiff already now exists.
    Can I stop it creating repeat Tiff files each time I create a new version from the Photoshoped photos?
    Thanks in anticipation.

    Hello Kirby,
    I clicked on the 'Show in Finder' and it revealed a new file called IMG_0961 (1) which goes with the original IMG_0961.CR2 and the edited new tiff created for Photoshop which was called IMG_0961.tiff
    I noticed also that a separate version I had previously created using Canon's DPP stand alone software and titled by me IMG_0961 (DPP).TIF (same thing but from a different original) does not form a new master file when I create a new version of that one.  I've tried this with a few images but when the original is edited in Photoshop via Aperture a second version of the Tiff is created for the 1st version of the image when I create a new version fo it.

  • Is there a way to make Aperture NOT create a new version w/ Brush editing?

    I have been messing around with the dodge and burn plug in. Is there a way to make it so it doesn't create a new version when I edit with the plug in, but rather just edits the existing file?

    nope ... not at this juncture ...
    all the current plug-ins work on a rendered .tiff (or .psd) ...

  • How do I show the bookmarks toolbar while in fullscreen on Firefox 20? In older versions you could edit the userChrome.css file. Does that still exist?

    After searching for this option, it appears it was very easy to do in older versions of firefox on windows 7. Many posts say you can edit the userChrome.css file to add:
    #PersonalToolbar[moz-collapsed="true"] {
    visibility: visible !important;
    However, on 2 machines with firefox 20, I've searched for that file and cannot find it. Does it even exist any more? if not, how can I set firefox to go to fullscreen mode and continue to show the bookmarks toolbar? Unchecking hide toolbars does not work for the bookmarks toolbar.

    userChrome.css does not exist by default. You can create it; it's an ordinary text file. Note that you do need a namespace at the beginning of the file.
    You could try this:
    @namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
    #PersonalToolbar[moz-collapsed="true"]{
    visibility: visible !important;
    #navigator-toolbox[inFullscreen="true"]{
    margin-top:-62px !important;
    I added the second rule to prevents the toolbar area from rolling all the way up. The specific value may need to be adjusted by a few pixels depending on your toolbar heights.

  • Is there any benefit to keep the RAW file after editing outside Lightroom creates a TIFF

    When working with RAW files in Lightroom and you choose to edit in Photoshop, the only option is "Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments" (Edit Original is grayed out).  This creates a .TIFF so after you come back from Photoshop you now have two copies of the photo--the RAW file and a TIFF version.
    In my normal workflow, I make additional edits to the TIFF file in addition to the changes Photoshop made so I'm left with a "out dated" version of the RAW file.  Is there any benefit to keeping the RAW file at that point?  I'm doubling my disk usage by keeping it.
    Fire away.....

    Answering this question:
    This got me wonderig why LR turns my 25-30mb CR2 RAW files into 80-95 mb TIFF files when it sends them to Photoshop for editing but Photoshop can open the same 25-30 RAW file in DNG format and save it as a 25-30 mb TIFF.  Why are the TIFF's LR creates 3x larger than the ones created by PS?
    Camera RAW file formats are compressed to a small file size using manufacturer proprietary information about the image sensor pixel layout. This provides a more efficient loss-less file compression algorithm than TIFF's LZW or ZIP compression algorithms. LZW or ZIP compression is not used when Lightroom exports and opens an image in Photoshop for editing, but you certainly have that option when saving the file after applying your PS edits. DNG files using loss-less compression can produce a file size slightly smaller than RAW format, but I have no experience with DNG.
    Answering this question:
    CS3 can't read Canon .CR2 RAW files (at least mine can't unless there is a plugin of some kind).
    Support for newer camera models like your Canon 7D are only added to the then current (and later version) Adobe Camera RAW Converter and Lightroom. Newer Adobe Camera RAW converter versions (6.3) are not supported in older version of Photoshop like CS3. It is the nature of business marketing and also due to the large expense to support older application versions with "new" plug-in features. It would be a support nightmare!
    Hypothetical Example:
    "Why doesn't Adobe Camera RAW 10.3 work properly with my Canon 1600 D MK XV 45 Megapixel camera in Photoshop CS3?"

  • I have files that may have been created in various versions of Illustrator. We need to be able to open them, but all we have is CS6 suite. I have called and been told that "technicians at adobe" could perform a paid service to find out what the files were

    I have files that may have been created in various versions of Illustrator. We need to be able to open them, but all we have is CS6 suite. I have called and been told that "technicians at adobe" could perform a paid service to find out what the files were created in and get them to be useable in InDesign 6, but I'd need an email address that was registered to our software to give the help desk person. After finding the correct email address, different adobe help number people told me to come here to ask as there is no phone support. Can anyone get me to an adobe technician that can provide a price quote for finding out what created these files and for getting them converted? Thanks.

    Sorry, I understood you to say you had the whole CS6 suite, which includes Illustrator.
    As far as finding out what the files are, sometimes you can look at them in a text editor to figure this out. See below; the, Creator Tool line. Not every software package makes it this easy, though.

  • In Pages I used to be able to edit a template and "save a version" to update the template. Now i have to rename the template to save the changes. Why is this happening? what happen to "save a version"? its no longer an option under "file".

    In Pages, In the past, I was able to edit a template and "save a version" to update the template. Now i have to rename the template to save the changes. Why is this happening? what happen to "save a version"? its no longer an option under "file". And I can no longer open the actual template, when template is clicked, it automaticaly opens an "untitled" version???

    In your description you say the first document opens as the Title you gave it.
    Templates always open as Untitled so it sounds like you have saved a regular document, perhaps into your templates folder which is possible.
    Since you have already worked on it and it has been previously saved, Lion will now Save for you and Save a Version is available
    The other document does open as Untitled so sounds like a real template and as Peggy has pointed out will not have either Revert nor Save a Version until you Save it and have changed something in it.
    This is a classic example of just how Apple's supposedly "simplification" of the process, is leading to confusion of what has happened. That the conditions and resulting actions from those conditions is so convoluted says it all.
    It all reminds me of the Monty Python Life of Brian sketch with the "simplified" John Cleese instructions to the class, as to if you have a brother in an older dorm whether to hang your hat and bag on the hooks provided. The trouble is Apple does not get the joke, that it is transforming itself into a frequently self contradictory bumbling bureacracy. The price of unchallenged self appointed geniushood.
    The incoherent half baked stumbling juggernaut has reached new triumphs with its edict on enforced Sandboxing on developers when it is unable to follow even its own instructions.

  • File created with Trial version cannot be opened by Captivate 5.5 (Ensure that the file isn't open, the file isn't damaged....etc.)

    Hi,
    I have a file created by Trial version of captivate. It was created in a different computer. Now, I have to make some modification in the file. However, when I tried to open it with Captivate 5.5, I got the error shown below. I am not able to use the popular solution provided in this link Click here to view   because the file was not created in my computer. I believe that there is a lock on the file since it was created with Trial version of captivate. Is it possible that I send the file to a representative, and they look into it?

    Was the file created with the same version? You talk about 'trial', but the only trial version available at this moment is Captivate 8. You were never able to open a Captivate project in a previous version, that explains why you cannot open it in 5.5.

    Numbers file created w new version of Numbers on my mac and then transferred  via Dropbox to my ipad: file cannot be opened by iOS version of Numbers

    Hi Jocomo,
    That's correct. Dropbox does not handle Numbers 3.0 for Mac and Numbers 2.0 for iOS documents well at all. They will probably fix this.
    But why are you using Dropbox for this?  Numbers has built-in iCloud integration for the very purpose of syncing documents back and forth.  It's much easier than using Dropbox even if Dropbox could handle the new Numbers format.  And it's now quite reliable.
    To enable iCloud with Numbers on your Mac:
    In System Preferences>iCloud make sure you have Documents & Data turned on:
    And after clicking Options, make sure you have checked Numbers.app:
    On your iPad you need to make sure iCloud sync is turned on in TWO places:
      Settings>iCloud>Documents & Data>Numbers
      Settings>Numbers>Use iCloud
    If you have entered the right iCloud credentials on your Mac and iPad, Numbers will then sync back and forth. It's much easier than putting in Dropbox and then having to Open in... , etc.  You can of course still keep backup copies of your documents in Dropbox if you want.

  • Can CS4 be used (easily) to edit docs created in newer versions?

    I have recently created a series of documents for work using the newest InDesign trial version. My trial is up, and now my boss and I are trying to figure out what to buy. We are a small non profit, with a pretty tight budget, and so my boss would prefer we buy an older version (the complete CS4 sells for under $500) and have the whole suite for one price rather than pay yearly for just one product (InDesign). We are currently only using InDesign, but would make use of Photoshop if we could afford it as well. I should note that we are not making anything terribly complicated, but may hire someone down the line with greater skills than I have.
    I have three concerns about this:
    1. Opening files created in newer versions — since our trial has ended, we now longer have access to the newer version of InDesign to "downsave" our files.
    2. My computer is a Mac running on Yosemite 10.10.3, so I don't know if CS4 will work.
    3. Will files created in CS4 be able to be opened in newer versions should we hire a designer with access to more updated software?
    Any guidance is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    1.       Correct.
    2.       Maybe…maybe not. CS4 is unsupported.
    3.       That should not be an issue.
    You should note that CS4 has not been sold through any legitimate channel in quite a few years. The likelihood of buying a genuine copy of CS4 is very low.
