Editing brochures created in Quark Xpress

I have several brochures that were created by an ad agency in Quark Xpress that I need to update/edit. I have tried to use Adobe Pro (pushed by corporate!) and I either loose the graphics or my text blocks are continually shifting. Will InDesign work for this or would I be better off to stick with Xpress? Either way I will have to purchase the software and the Adobe CS is not an option because the whole suite is not approved.
Thanks

Kent,
>While I understand why you asked the question, in this economic situation, the answer is fairly obvious...$$$$$
Unless you are dealing with a very simple typo, go back to the creator application either directly (assuming you have the skills, software, and all file components and legal fonts) or by handing it back to the designer or agency. Either way, you will have to pay for the revisions.
Also note, that as Adobe (the company) develops many dozens of applications and workflows, and thousands of fonts, to prevent confusion, it is important to distinguish them by name, platform and version (as appropriate).
Unlike Quark, Adobe is hardly a one-trick pony.

  • Unable To Save Quark XPress File In Mac OS 10.2.8

I have been trying to save a layout I created using Quark XPress 6.1 on an iMac with a 10.2.8 OS. When I first created the document, I was able to save it with no problem. However, after I had done some more work on it, I tried to save the changes -- but all I got was a message that said "Cannot find required volume or folder [-35]." The folder I have been trying to save it to is still there. I then tried using Save As to save it in a different location or under a new name -- but then I get an "Unknown error [-51]."
I tried to solve the problem by consulting Help, but all I was able to find is that apparently the error is occurring with the OS, not with Quark XPress.
I spent hours working on this document and will be sick if I am unable to save it. Can anyone possibly help me? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

How big is your hard drive, and how full is it?
How big are files like the one you are trying to save?

  • 10.4.7 Update, Quark Xpress, and OT Fonts

After updating to 10.4.7 on two different G5 PPC machines, we immediately began to experience problems with Quark XPress 6.5 unexpectedly quitting when trying to open existing Quark docs in which OpenType fonts were used. Also, trying to apply an OpenType font to text in a Quark doc would also cause Quark to immediately crash.
    SOLUTION: Clear the font caches.
After clearing the font caches with FontCacheCleaner and restarting, the problem dissappeared. Hope this is helpful to somebody.

In Tiger, you'll need to use Font Finagler (or, the Font Cache Cleaner feature of Font Finagler) rather than my original Font Cache Cleaner utility. Man, it's been so long... I'm trying to remember what versions of OS X my original freeware Font Cache Cleaner app supported. I think it was only 10.2.x and 10.3.x. There were fairly significant changes in the font caching architecture from OS X 10.3 to OS X 10.4. Unfortunately, that earlier version of Font Cache Cleaner wasn't very sophisticated and while it may have acted like it had cleaned the font cache files and then restarted, very few, if any of the (OS X 10.4) font cache files would have been removed. (That's one of the reasons I decided to switch to an interface where I show you the files that will be deleted -- otherwise, how do you really know that this utility is doing what it claims it's doing?)
Anyhow, I'm in the process of creating a Universal Binary of Font Finagler and adding support for AdobeFnt.lst files, Quark jaws font cache files, and Microsoft font cache files. (Unfortunately, I've had to put the font suitcase-editing thing on hold).
    Anyway, glad this could help.

  • ITunes 5 incompatible with Quark XPress 4.1

I wish I had come to this forum before installing the iTunes "upgrade." Unfortunately, I did install it, and it makes my Quark XPress 4.1 hang. When I started encountering problems with Quark, I checked the Quark forum and a poster described this situation. I removed the QuickTime program from my system. Quark now works fine, but iTunes 5 won't work without QuickTime. I'm going to follow the advice of a couple other posters and try to revert back to iTunes 4.9.
I just wanted to bring it to the attention of this forum, just in case there are any other folks out there who enjoy listening to iTunes while they are designing datasheets.

I have the same problem, discovered too late, like you. I removed Quicktime, which fixed Quark. I then reverted my ITunes installation to 4.9 with the older version of Quicktime.
    My problem is:
The rolled back version can not read any of the ~6500 songs I have in my ITunes library because it says that the file format was created by a later version of ITunes, so I'm STILL stuck, big time.
    HELP!
Is there any way to roll back my data/music files so I can go back to using v.4.9 ?

  • Quark Xpress 9 crashes at startup

I have installed Quark Xpress 9.3 on my MacBook Air with 10.7.5 and it does not start. It freezes at startup and needs a force quit. Very helpful, Quark Support, after many tries, made me create a root disk, from where the application finally starts up. The problem should be a conflict with some of the applications I have on my HD. Has anybody had a similar experience? Any suggestion for an application wich might create such a conflict? Thanks

Apparently this was a screen resolution issue. iTunes runs fine with a lower screen resolution. No other changes were made.
I really can't understand why yet, but the fact remains. I'll update this post if I can figure it out.
This kind of strange issues are the reasons why I use a Mac.

  • Quark Xpress shows err "Spooler Subsystem App needs to close" - HP Laserjet Pro P1606DN

Purchased a new HP Laserjet Pro P1606 DN network printer. Installation went smooth on all computers.
When people tried to print from Quark Xpress, the document get spooled and loaded to the print queue and then we get the error "Spooler subsystem app experienced a problem and needs to close"
The recovery has been set to "restart the service" for print spooler.
Users are able to print from other applications.
Just found a thread that stated to disable Advanced Printer settings on the Advanced tab of Properties. Checked but the issue still persists.
Users are on Windows XP and printer was using the smart install from the printer.
Kindly advise if there is something else to tweak in the printer properties or something to tweak in Quark Xpress v6.1.
thanks in advance for the support

    Hi Opp1,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand you are unable to reinstall the printer software.
I will be happy to help you.
The print spooler is part of the Windows operating system and if it doesn't stay running the printer software won't install or print.
You could try the following steps to see if this will resolve the issue.
Normally with spooler problems the first thing to do is to clear the print queue.
Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type cmd and press Enter.
Now type these commands, which are in capitals for clarity:
NET STOP SPOOLER and press Enter
    DEL %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\PRINTERS\*.* and press Enter
NET START SPOOLER and press Enter
    EXIT and press Enter
If you are still having issues with the print spooler stopped then right click on the start button, left click on explore, open the windows folder, open system32 folder, open the spool folder, open the printer's folder, then delete everything on the right window.
Then go back and try and start the print spooler again.
Run a full uninstall of the printer software. Disconnect the USB cable.
    To uninstall from CD:
    Go start and select computer.
Right click on the CD for the printer and left click open in a new window.
    Double click on uninstall.
Uninstall printer from the C Drive.
Go to start, computer, c:, windows, program files or program files x86, HP, printer name. Double click uninstall. Restart the computer.
Check to make sure the print spooler is running.
Ran the installation again. Don't connect the USB cable until prompted.
If the print spooler stops again you will need to contact the computer manufacturer to resolve this issue.
    Hope this helps.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.
    Have a great weekend!

  • Does iWork for iOS allow me to open and edit documents created in the Microsoft Office suite?

    Hi all,
I have just purchased an iPad 2 32Gb. I want to be able to use it for work.
I need to be able open and edit documents created in Microsoft Office. Primarily .doc and .docx files. Is this possible? or am I better with D2 or Documents to Go.
Also, can I save a document attachment from an email and open it on my iPad for reviewing and editing?
    Cheers
    Mr Bunyip?

Yes, "pages.app" will open these files. In the same manner "numbers.app" will open xls, xlsx and "keynote.app" will open powerpoint files.
iwork09 files from a Mac can also be opened. And you can save each files back in various file formats, also save them  as pdf.
Also, can I save a document attachment from an email and open it on my iPad for reviewing and editing?
Yes. "open in .." then a suitable app is in the list : say you get a docx, then pages will be presented as app to open it.
    Cheers

    Enjoy it.

  • Hi. My iMac hard drive is running Mavericks.  I have an old version of Quark Xpress (3.32) which won't run in Mavericks.  Can I partition my hard drive and run an older system on one partition, so I can access my Quark?  Is that possible?

    Hi ancelau,
QuarkXPress 3 is a Classic Mac OS application, so you need a version of OS X that still supports Classic. I believe 10.4 was the last one.
So if you have an iMac that boots with 10.4, then yes that is possible. I doubt though that newer Macs boot with OS X 10.4.
So why don't you upgrade QuarkXPress 3 to a newer version? I am not just asking that because I want you to spend money with us.
Typically using software that was released almost 20 years ago is just feasible when you keep an environment that was current at the time of release or a few years after, so an older Mac with a operating system present at that time. 20 years in IT is a lot.
So my opinion is that on a new Mac with a brand new operating system you need to use something a bit more current.
How about QuarkXPress 9 (released 3 years ago) or QuarkXPress 10? You are better off with v9, as QuarkXPress 10 only opens v7 and higher (whereas QuarkXPress 9 opens v3.1 and higher).
Or - I am even happy to make an exception - upgrade to 9 and we give you 10 for free? Let me know please.
    Thanks
    Matthias

  • Editing pages created using dreamweaver with microsoft's visual studio express

Here's a quick, somewhat vague, question for anyone who might have an answer. Is there a trick to editing pages created using dreamweaver with Microsoft Visual Studio Express? The reason I ask is I recently finished a web site for my first client who now wants to make edits herself using the program she uses, that being Microsoft. I thought it would be as easy as pulling the html files from the server (or the usb flash drive i gave her), making changes and then putting them back to the server, but apparently she is having some problems. I'm meeting with her soon. I have no experience with any other programs, other than Adobe, so I don't know how much good I'll be in helping her. Maybe it's an easy question, maybe not. Any info appreciated. Thanks!

Dreamweaver template commands are all wrapped in HTML comments, so they
shouldn't cause any problems. They should simply be treated as comments.
However, the concept of editable and locked regions will be ignored.
Hi David, I meant the templates with the dwt extension, not the html files that are created from them. The full version of VS will recognize the dwt extension as 'Dynamic Web Template' but as this is a microsoft extension it does not recognize the code for editing and shows a large number of errors, (before anyone comments the dwt file extension is used by a number of other programs, all referring to a different file type).

  • IPhoto 09: Does Editing Still Create Copies?

I know it's not released yet but does anyone have any inside information about whether iPhoto 09 will do non-destructive editing without creating full copies of the original image?
Most of my 12,000 photos are 10 megapixels so the way iPhoto creates copies when I crop, rotate or change settings results in a massive amount of wasted disk space.
Lightroom, Picasa and Aperture all work in a non-destructive way so I'm hoping iPhoto 09 will follow suit.

This is the way that iPhoto has always worked and there’s nothing in the information we have to date to indicate otherwise.
The advantage to using this way of working is that it runs well on lower end machines. The DB system places greater hardware demands.
You can, of course, run iPhoto from an external HD with no effort whatever, and they are inexpensive for even enormous disks.
If that doesn’t work for you then the very obvious thing is... use another application.

Whats the best software for photo editing and creating product catalogues that can be saved as PDF's

You are asking two different questiions:
    1. What's a good photo editor? Answer to that here is probably obvious.
    2. What's a good desktop publishing/page layout program for creating PDF files for production? Answer, not PSE. It's a photo editor, not a page layout program.

  • Please help! Issues with file permissions on the 'Edit' file created by LR for editing in Photoshop?

I am running a Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion. I use a Netgear ReadyNas as my storage device. I can Save, Re Save, Delete and add files without any concern on the ReadyNas from within PS or LR. However when I use the 'Edit in Photoshop" command on LR. I chose the 'Edit a copy with edits', LR creates the new duplicate 'edit' file in the same directory as the original. It opens in PS, I edit as required, however when I save the file to return to LR, I am informed that the file is locked and that I need to edit settings on file or folder, even though the settings are working for all other edits etc. I have had Netgear on this for 3 hours this evening and they cannot see any issues with the setting on the ReadyNas. Does anyone know what permissions are changed or why they are changing when the file is being created by LR?
Sorry bit of a long winded one - but I hope that all makes sense?

h264 is highly compressed and might be the reason your skimming isn't smooth, it may also take a bit more time to convert. I don't have to worry all that much about space so I haven't particularly tried it and can't say whether there are any drawbacks of doing so.
If you google 'mpegstreamclip tutorials', you will see quite a few tutorials you can look at, they do tend to be specific to one task which may not exactly fit in with what you are trying to do, but looking at a few might give you a better understanding of what some options do and when to use them if at all.

  • MacBook Air or MacBook Pro for Quark XPress?

I've been a Windows PC user for the past 20+ years (Windows 3.0, people!  Believe it or not!), but my new job responsibilities require me to work extensively with Quark XPress.  I've got the Windows version, but everyone I'm having to swap files with uses a Mac, and it's just too darned tricky on a number of levels (okay, mainly with fonts.  And other fonts.  And still more fonts.)
So, I'm looking at a portable MacBook that I can set up on my desk alongside my Windows PC when I need to be working in Quark.  I'm not so worried about connecting to my work network, since I can just put what I need to work on into Dropbox and grab it from there.  I just want to know if a MacBook Air would up to running Quark XPress without lag, or if I should go with MacBook Pro?
    Thanks!

15" MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz or better, anti-glare high res screen a must. This is the pro work machine you need.
The 2.0 15" is cheaper, with a less powerful video card, no 3D gaming.
The MBA has a glossy screen and the optical drive is external, not enough ports for connecting things. Not a good choice. More of a lightweight personal machine.
I used to do GD as a youngster and those glossy CRT's messed up my eyes, don't let it happen to you, insist on anti-glare screens, it's worth it.
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2011/05/23/glossy-vs-matte-screens-why-the-pc-indus trys-out-of-touch/
Problem is your going to have to hurry and get a MacBook Pro from a Apple Store very fast, becuase OS X Lion 10.7 just came out yesterday and Quark and other programs likely won't work with it unitl several months from now (and a paid upgrade most likely)
So you need a 10.6 MacBook Pro, which Apple still likely has one's avaiallbe in the Stores for only a few short days as they start issuing them with 10.7 automatically installed.
If you get a 10.7 then you likely can't run Quark. 10.6 is stable and 10.7 is far from stable, it's a mess.

  • Pen Quark XPress 6.5 in InDesign CC 2014

Is there a plugin for InDesign CC 2014 that I can use to import a Quark XPress 6.5 document? I found an online service, but they charge about $35 dollars per file. I have a lot of files to convert.

Q2ID from Markzware.com is the only one I know of, and I'm not sure it's been released for CC2014 yet, but you can download and install CS6 under the terms of your subscription if not, so you aren't out of luck.
