Editing Canon Rebel T3i files in FCP 5

I'm a newbie to FCP and shoot videos with a Canon Rebel T3i. Obviously, I can copy the .mov files from the SD card to my Mac and edit in Final Cut Pro 5, but it's a bear (slow rendering time and whatnot) and I'm never impressed with the video quality output once I'm done rendering. Specially, the files I am trying to work with now are in 1280x720 format, 60 fps.
Here are some questions/scenarios:
1. Can I import my video files straight from my SD card into Final Cut Pro 5 (seeing as I only have Log and Capture and not Log and Transfer)?
2. Can I use Compressor or some other program to convert my files to a more FCP-friendly file?
3. What setting must I use in FCP to import my HD files and export them as HD files?
Thanks!

1. Yes, but you won't be happy working with it.
2. Yes, and that would be whatever HD editing codec you have in your QT library…hopefully Pro Res 422.
3. Some flavor of 720p60. (I don't have 5.1, so I can't be more specific.) The sequence settings should be Frame size: 1280X720 frame size, Pixel AR: square, Field Dominance: None.
I'd use a card reader and copy everything to a media drive. Then transcode (MPEG STreamclip is faster than Compressor). Then import.
Good luck.

  • Canon EOS t3i File Conversion Issue

    Hello all,
I recently got a Canon Rebel t3i, and sat down to edit some of the material I shot in FCP 7.
After importing the files off of my SD cards directly into FCP and then organizining, making subclips, renaming etc., I was unhappy to find that after dragging clips into the timeline they did not playback correctly, dropping frames and generally screwing up.
Looking it up after the fact I found that apparently the h.264 MOVs that the t3i makes are no good in Final Cut without first converting to something like Apple ProRes. Bummer.
My question: will I need to go back and convert my files pre-FCP, as in the raw files straight off the SD card (using Compressor or the Canon plugin or whatever), or can I somehow not lose the work I have already done in naming and organizing clips in my FCP project?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

You didn't even copy them off the card first?  Well, that's ANOTHER bottleneck...trying to edit directly from the card.
OK, you can use the MEDIA MANAGER and the RECOMPRESS option to convert all the footage and keep the organization you have.  But in the future, you need to download the Canon EOS log and transfer plugin to use this workflow:  http://library.creativecow.net/ross_shane/tapeless-workflow_fcp-7/1
or, use MPEG STREAMCLIP or Magic Bullet Grinder to convert the footage to ProREs before you edit.

  • Camera Raw CS4 Canon Rebel T3i update?

Is there an update to Camera Raw (CS4!) for the Canon EOS Rebel T3i?
Or, is there an equivelant method for opening CR2 files in PS CS4?
Can I update to Camera Raw 6.4.1 (which is when it started support for the Canon Rebel T3i) with CS4?

Once a new verson of PS comes out camera raw is not updated, and the old version is not suppported.
Also, you have to stay with the ACR for each version, which is one number higher than the PS version.  So for CS4 you have to stay with ACR 5.x
You options are to upgrade to current version so you can use ACR 7.x or download the free current DNG converter.  Currently the DNG converter is 7.1 which is the same as ACR 7.1.

  • I have a Canon Rebel T3i and I need to tether into my Macbook Pro. How can I do that?

I have a Canon Rebel T3i and I need to tether into my Macbook Pro. How can I do that? I updated my iPhoto to recongize my camera, it does. When connected I see it in the USB utlitiy. But my MacBook Pro says "no camera found." What do I need to do to fix this problem?

    Thanks, Kappy
I was fooling around with Lightroom and it has a tethering option. I tried it and it worked. But I am still reading my camera manual as you recommeded.

  • When I try to open the EOS digital solution disk ver 24.1 for my new Canon Rebel T3i camera on my Mac 10.5.8 a notice "this software is not supported by the CPU you are using" comes up.  What gives?

When I try to open the EOS digital solution disk ver 24.1 for my new Canon Rebel T3i camera on my Mac 10.5.8 a notice "this software is not supported by the CPU you are using" comes up.   Do I need this software?  Can I just download the pictures to my Mac without using the Canon software?

When I try to open the EOS digital solution disk ver 24.1 for my new Canon Rebel T3i camera on my Mac 10.5.8 a notice "this software is not supported by the CPU you are using" comes up
You need to contact Canon - or read the software specs - it sounds like the software you got form them is not supported by your computer
    Do I need this software?
Probably not - exactly what about it do you want?
Can I just download the pictures to my Mac without using the Canon software?
Probably - if you are shooting JPEG - launch iPhoto and in the iPhoto preferences set action when a camera is connected to launch iPhoto and connect your camera - iPhoto should launch and you should be able to import
Some cameras need to be set to mass storage mode - read your camera manual for details and procedures
If you are using RAW then your camera needs to be on this list and you need the versions of software noted - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757 - for older OS versions you can use google to find the list of supported cameras

  • Canon Rebel T3i flash error

I am on my second Canon Rebel T3i. Out of the blue I get the Err 05 that the flash can not be raised. I turn it off and back on like it says but that doesn't help. Same thing happened with my first one only a month after I had it. This camera is less than a year old and doing this. Why? Do I have to send it away to be fixed?

There was an issue where the camera thinks an external flash is connected. You can check under the metal brackets where a shoe-bracket flash would go to see if the little button is being pushed down and blow some compressed air over it. If that doesn't help, you'll probably need to send it in for a defective flash release.
Although I do work for the Geek Squad, all comments and opinions are my own.

  • How do you Backup Canon VIXIA HF10 files for FCP?

    Hi,
I just bought a Canon VIXIA HF10, wonderful!!
I'm trying to import the captured/recorded files into FCP..i found that's a problem..
When i drag and drop all the files and folder on my desktop and when i deleted 1 of the file in the backup folder...Final Cut Pro unable to browse the whole folder for preview and even doesn't launch in the Log and Transfer window
How to solve this problem? how to delete the clips that i don't want and keep posible to launch in FCP? Deleted it on Camera before backup to computer? not really a good idea...
    HF10 users....helps...
    Thanks and Appreciate!

I have HF100. Do you mean make a backup of footage you take before editing? Or after editing? For footage before editing, I make an exact copy of the SDHC card from my camera and store that on an external harddrive. That is in the avchd codec (with file and directory structures intact). Therefore 8GB card = 8GB on Hard Drive. With the HF10 I believe it is possible to copy the files on Camera's Hard Drive to Camera's SDHC. Then you could follow my workflow. You will also find that you can point Log and Transfer to the stored copy on the drive and it will transcode to ProRes or AIC as you determine. The important thing to remember is to maintain the exact file and directory structure as the original.

  • Canon Rebel T3i Shoots Images Instead of Video on Video Mode. Help!!

Hello Canon community, I'm fairly new to DSLR cameras and a I recently purchased a T3i for video purposes. Today when I tried to shoot a video on video mode it just kept taking pictures every time I would press the shutter button. I'm fairly new to the menu settings and I don't know what to change in order to make it shoot video. It is on the video mode. Do you know why this is happening? And if so what can I change to make it shoot videos?  Any answers will be apreciated!

  • Recommendation for correct wide angle lens and flash for real estate photos for Canon Rebel T3i?

Hi I'm new to the forum. I always hire out a professional photog for my real estate photos however have thought that with the amount that I pay them, I could buy my own wide angle lens to do on my own.
Any recommendations for what wide angle lens and flash to buy?
Here are some examples of the work they have done in the past for me:
Any advice would be much appreciated. I enjoy amateur photography with my family and portraits but am hoping to be able to do more of my own work on my listings. Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Your samples look like incredibility simple images to do. I also suspect little artificial light was added. Possibly just a bounce off the ceiling.
Since you already have a Rebel T3i, I would get the Canon 430 EX, and just one. But be aware it will likely not provide equal coverage for a 10-22mm lens. Ten millimeters is pretty wide even on a T3i. Bouncing off the ceiling will help this.
Some ceilings may not be good for bounce either.
Give it a go and you will learn what works and what not. But the old saying, KISS, applies.  You will learn!
Photshop and/or Lightroom are great additions. They both have learning curves and PS a very long learning curve.

  • Canon Rebel t3i or t2i ???? need input

I am upgading from my little Canon Power Shot.  Decided on a Canon Rebel either t3i or t2i and would like input.
The only difference I can see is the swivel out LCD screen, is it worth spending the extra money on that opiton???
    I do take a lot of video's.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.    Thanks

Swivel screens is nice when you shoot low or overhead
Swivel screens are unprotected (ie a belt buckle) when exposed and must be flip around in order to view it.... a hassle
Swivel screens also results in more blurry shaky pictures.... using the view finder will be a more steady image as the camera is held closer to your bodies center of gravity
DSLR videos offer great images, but horrible give audio when the Auto Focus or Image Stabilizer is used.  Turn up your computer speakers and click on this link.  The audio is like listening to finger nails on a chalkboard.  Just say "NO"!  If this your wedding video.... you will be "so fired!".
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r3VcFueYw4&t=4s
DSLR videos will require external microphones for best audio.... suddenly your camera is no longer portable.
DSLR videos are also limited in length before the sensor overheats..... will your wedding completed in 12 minutes?  I prefer packing a separate HD camcorder.
I like Canon pocket shooters and HD cameras, but I like Nikon for DSLR's.  Consider the D7000 and the D5100 as well in your research

  • Anyone editing Canon HF S20 files w/PP-CS5?

I'm just waiting to receive a Canon HF S20 camcorder that I ordered online and wonder if there are any folks here who have edited that camera's files using PPro CS5?
    Thanks,
    Russell

I think the link I provided describes the setting I am using right now... which I **think** is 60i (my night to cook dinner, and timer just buzzed)
I would shoot at HD instead of SD... my experience shows WONDERFUL quality when I tell PPro to export as DV AVI Widescreen and I then import that into Encore for DVD authoring
But... test and see what YOU like... and do that testing BEFORE you are in a time crunch due to a customer deadline !!!!!

  • My canon rebel T3i isnt being recognized by my computer all of a sudden

I cant figure out why my camera isnt being recognized by my computer.  And my EOS Utilitysoftware only has the Monitor folder and Picture Style Editor highlighted--- all ther others are greyed out as in not available.  I have used this for 2 years already with no problems

    Hi spaghettimark!
Thanks for posting on the Canon Forum!
To help the community and myself determine what is causing this, we need some more information.
What operating system are you running on your computer?
What version of EOS Utility do you have installed?
Are there any devices connected to your computer other than the camera?
If this is a time sensitive-matter, additional support options are available at Contact Us.

  • Issues importing from Canon Rebel T3i after upgrading to Mavericks and Lightroom 5

    Hi there,
I just upgraded to Mavericks and Lightroom 5 on a 2008 Macbook Pro.
LR5 is working fine on my photos that have already been imported.  However, when I plug in my camera to import new files (RAW and JPEG), the camera does not even mount - aka. does not show up as a possible source at all.  I have tried turning off and on, restarting, and using the old LR4 to see if that would solve the problem, but it did not.  I also tried importing from the EOS Utility, but that does not recognize the camera as a possible source either.  Please HELP!
