Editing/Converting M2T PAL and MXF NTSC

Hi,
I am working on a project that will involve AVI M2T PAL files shot on a Sony Z7 at 25fps. I will also be bringing in footage that is DVCPROHD MXF NTSC (most likely to be shot at 24fps or 29.97) from a Panasonic HVX-200.
My final product will need to be NSTC at either 24fps or 29.97.
What is the best (most efficient and high quality) way to work with both types of formats?
If I convert them to an intermediary codec (in FCP you would convert to Pro Res), which one would you recommend for Premiere Pro?
I know you can typically work with different video formats on one timeline in Premiere, but perhaps this is too extreme (the difference in FPS)? And I would prefer not to slowdown my workflow while editing (and not have to render more frequently).

Edit them as they are. They won't get any better from what they already are, so you'll needlessly waste time, space, and quality converting them. Just pick the frame rate/timebase that makes the most sense; it doesn't sound like you've settled on what one of your sources will be, or your output, so you can weigh those into the equation once you get that sorted.

Nope; it's not. In Premiere Pro, dropping a video with one frame rate into a sequence with another frame rate is pretty trivial from a computational point of view--it simply plays the file back at its source frame rate. When it comes time for export, those differences will have to be rectified, but that's not a big deal either. There's only so much you can do in your case--you're working with video from two distinctly different video systems that don't have a common factor when it comes to frame rates. Typically, it's better to go to a greater frame rate than a lesser one--Premiere Pro will simply pad/interpolate the required frames to meet the greater frame rate, whereas going to a lower frame rate will involve throwing away frames.
And with a decent computer, you probably won't have to render--at least if all you're talking about is editing. When you start dropping effects--particularly non-accelerated effects--into your sequence, then rendering may become an issue. But with the two video formats you've listed, any system built within recent history (in computer terms) will handle them easily.

Convert HDV PAL 1080i50 to NTSC HD 1080i

Has anyone ever successfully converted HDV PAL 1080i50 to NTSC HD 1080i. we keep running into problems with cinema tools. Both the preferences in the file menu and button marked "conform" in the open clip dialogue are GRAYED OUT!! Please help...
We've also tried using MPEG Streamclip 1.9 to conform our footage with meager results. Basically we always end up with jumpy footage.
Also if no one knows how to do this, what about converting 1080i50 to 1080i/p 23.98/24?? Is this possible? Can it have smooth playback?

I've done it in a different way.... I've used FCP Media Manager to recompress the HDV footage to DVCPRO HD, then it works in Cinema Tools, although I've gotten glitches in the video for some reason on occasion. Inotherwords, the orginal PAL DVCPRO HD file is perfect. Then when I conform it in Cinema Tools to 23.98 (which takes about a second), it's now a perfect NTSC file with the exception that at around 5 mins. in, there's a five frame glitch, which I have no way to explain except that there's a glitch in the software which causes that...

Converting a PAL movie to NTSC

I have the whole thing edited (about an hour and ten minutes), but it's in PAL. Is it possible to convert the whole thing in my computer or should I just take it to a dubbing house? It seems like there should be some easy way to do this, but so far I can't figure it out.

IMovie - iDVD and a NTSC versus PAL question

I have some questions about creating iMovie for use in iDVD and about the various formats. Here goes:
I have a large number of travel photos taken in various cities that I need to use to create a project in iMovie. In addition, I have a couple of smallish video segments that go with each of these cities. I want to be able to get to any section from the DVD menus. The sections being defined as the either the videos or the photos for each individual city. Also, I need to be able to create both NTSC and PAL formatted DVD's from this exercise.
Now, as I understand it, there's several ways I can approach this:
First, I can use iMovie to create discreet projects for each segment. The individual city videos being one type. The photo shows of the individual cities being another type. Then export each of these via the media browser and import them individually into iDVD. But that then begs the question of NTSC versus PAL. Since I have to choose a project format in iMovie (NTSC or PAL), does that imply that I've got to have separate projects for each one of the cities NTSC or PAL versions? Or can I just use the NTSC project and cut the DVD in either NTSC or PAL format based on the settings in iDVD? If I use this route, what's the best export format to use for optimal appearance on the finished DVD?
Second, I can create one long project in iMovie. Put chapter markers in it and export it to the media browser. Then, import it into iDVD and use the chapter markers referenced from the various menu picks. If I go this route, once again, how do I account for the NTSC versus PAL differences? And again, what's the best export settings for optimal viewing?
I guess much of this question relates to the issue of having to specify a format in both iMovie and iDVD. If I choose NTSC in iMovie, but use PAL in iDVD, other than the obvious format mismatch, what actually happens by doing this? Or, turn it around. Use PAL in iMovie and NTSC in iDVD. Again, what's the ramifications of doing this?
Just trying to figure out the best way of going about this and what the tradeoffs are for each approach. Any insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Oh... and sorry to have been so long winded.

Oh Dear. Is this an assigned task from an editing turor. Then He/She is mean.
a. If You want a DVD - Then You should not use iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 as they can not export interlaced video to iDVD as it needs but discard every second line resulting in a less quality DVD. Use (for SlideShows and Movies)
• iMovie up to HD6 (SlideShows or Movie) - or -
• FinalCut any version (SlideShows or Movie) - or -
• FotoMagico (if You make only a SlideShow - can not do movies)
If persisting with iMovie'08-11 - Then DO NOT use "Share to iDVD" from within any version of iMovie (not 3 - HD6 either) as they do a bad job. But in iM'08-11 "Share to Media Browser" and as Large. In iM HD6 or FCE/P Save as QuickTime .mov and import this into iDVD.
b. NTSC and PAL - If DVD is to be sent to EU (PAL) - then most DVD-players also playback NTSC so conversion is not needed (mostly).
There are NO way to make a combo version PAL & NTSC - They do not exist.
If You make a PAL iMovie /FC project - then DO NOT let iDVD convert to NTSC (or other way either)
• it can do so - BUT Result is severely BAD
I use JES_Deinterlacer to make the conversion and it's so much better. (free on internet)
But absolutly best result is by doing two versions in the movie-editor - one PAL and one NTSC version.
c. Use High quality DVD brand - I only use Verbatim DVD-R
and set down burn speed to x4 - Less burn errors and plays on many more Players.
Just to start with.
Take one Q at a time and we can fix this.

Can I "print to tape" using PAL and Capture from that tape using NTSC?

I need to edit video from a video card in the PAL format somehow onto the FCE Timeline using NTSC.

This is not any where nearly as simple as it sounds. You need to standards convert the PAL material to NTSC. I'd recommend using Graeme Nattress' Standards Converter for this. Then you can edit in NTSC and record to NTSC tape.
Just to add, FCE does not accept standard definition material from a video card. It only handles AVCHD media from a video card. The only HD tape format it supports is HDV.

FCP to PC, Mac and Television Pal and NTSC

I am editing a DVD for a French dancer who wants to send out the footage as a promotional piece. Target is Europe, North and South America. PC, Mac and Television. When things looked OK on the Mac I burned a dvd from DVD studio Pro. Checked on two PC laptops, a PC tower, a pal system television with dvd player and my Mac tower and powerbook G4.
I have now been reading articles and talking with people about the difference between the gamma
of 1.8 for Mac and 2.2 for PC and 2.5 for television. CRT and LCDs. What is the best we can do today when editing for people who are going to receive and play on different machines?
The new Mac cinema display does not change every time I move my head like the less expensive
LCD monitor I used in France and the PC and Mac laptops. Is it recommended in the video editing
world to buy a pal and/or ntsc monitor to color correct for Pal and NTSC? Does one have to linearize in some way on both?
Both Pal and NTSC seem to play on all computers.

I'd just monitor it on a well calibrated external monitor and leave it at that.
If people will be playing it on a PC it will look like any other well calibrated thing would look on a PC and again on the mac.
If people thought PCs were too dark then they'd complain about them and never use them and you wouldn't have to ever worry about it... but they don't.
Just do a normal calibration and leave it at that. You'll kill yourself over EVERY combination!!

Convert PAL DVD to NTSC?

Hi. I recently got an imac G5 and tried playing my 1st DVD. The message came up saying that I have to choose a region code and will only be able to set the region code 5 times before its permanently set. I find this very inconvienent as I have some of both NTSC (region 1) and PAL (region 2) DVDs that I would like to be able to play on my Mac. As a worksround....I'm wondering if its possible for me to convert my PAL DVDs to NTSC using imovie and perhaps some other software.......perhaps importing the info on the PAL DVD into imovie ......and burning a NTSC (region 1) copy? If possible .....how would I go about doing this? Thanks.

I have my computer set to read region 2 DVD . Is this a problem when trying to convert a DVD to region free or 1?
When I run MTR, I get 2 folders, Audio_TS (which is empty) and VIDEO_TS.
VIDEO_TS has many files, example; VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TSIFO, VIDEO_VOB, VTS010.BUP, VTS010.IFO, VTS010.VOB....... etc.
When I open JES 2.7.6 to convert from PAL > NTSC... the JES input pane doesn't see the files (they won't hi-lite, double click or anything) (could it be because I have my computer set to read region 2?)
Toast see the MTR files. If I try importing those same MTR files or the DVD files to Toast 6>video tab, I get "files are in a unsupported format and cannot be imported"
If I try and simply take the Pal DVD and "Toast it" from the desktop, I get "Disk could not be mounted. All open files and programs on this volume must be closed first"
When I tried DVDxDV>OTMovie, the playback was jittery on any thing that was moving with-in the picture frame. completely un-watchable. (well maybe with the right drugs....)
I looked at both links send by Matti (btw thank you very much) but I am a novice and don't understand all of the technical jargon....
All I'm trying to do is get a DVD that will play on my stand alone DVD/TV....

How do you convert PAL audio to NTSC?

I have converted a PAL video to NTSC but the audio was mixed separately and so it's still set at 25fps and hence becomes out of sync when I lay it against the video track.
So how do I convert the separate audio.aiff files from 25fps to 30fps?

I think you are barking up the wrong tree...
Let's say you have a 10 second clip of PAL material:
10 seconds x 25 fps = 250 frames
If properly converted to NTSC:
10 seconds x 30 fps = 300 frames
The only difference is the number of frames, NOT THE LENGTH OF THE CLIP! It is still 10 seconds long.
10 seconds of audio x 44.1 kHz = 441 thousand samples
or
10 seconds of audio x 48 kHz = 480 thousand samples
or
10 seconds of audio at 22.05 kHz = 220.5 thousand samples
The only difference is the number of samples. NOT THE LENGTH OF THE AUDIO. It is still 10 seconds long.
If you have drift, then there is something wrong in your conversion. You can't take a 25 fps clip, tell it to play at 30 fps and expect it to be the same length. There are multi-thousand $$$ transcoders that do that job.

Hello I am trying to convert a PAL dvd to NTSC format and was unable to when I tried mac the ripper. Perhaps it wasn't the program for it.
I'm looking for a free program that would allow me to do this.

No I'm not trying to rip dvd's. I bought this dvd in europe but unfortunately cannot play in on my dvd player (although I have an all format playing dvd player).
Also, do you get an error when logging into the apple forums.

Grainy Image when converting from PAL to NTSC...

Hi,
I'm using Compressor 2.0.1 to convert a PAL movie to NTSC. I find that the output is extremely Grainy, the blacs are Muddy and the Highlights are colored.
Any suggestions?

There are many options when converting from PAL to NTSC with Compressor's Frame Controls panel. Have you tried other settings? Note, however, that the highest quality settings are pretty slow so be prepared for a fairly long wait even on your Power Mac G5.
Otherwise, you might want to try the freeware utility JES Deinterlacer (available on VersionTracker.com). JES Deinterlacer is pretty fast at PAL <-> NTSC conversion and the results are better than you will get with the basic settings in Compressor 2.

How to convert HD DVD to SD in PAL and NTSC - is the MXO2 the magic bullet?

I edited a 1 hour-long video of my college class reunion in FCP Studio 2, exported via Compressor and finally made it into a DVD with menus via DVDSP. Very neat so far, but there's a problem - the DVD is in HD, but I need to convert it to SD PAL to distribute to my old pals in the UK and SD NTSC for those who made it to the USA.
I'd like to do that without re-doing all the fancy menu-work in DVDSP, but how? Can anyone advise me, will the new Matrox MXO2 convert an input HD PAL signal to an SD PAL / or SD NTSC output which can be re-acquired into DVDSP and burned to disk?

Jerry, I appreciate your help with this. I exported the film from FCPS2 via Compressor as a PAL SD .mov, located the correct HD video asset in the DVDSP Build folder and replaced it with the new SD version, renamed to look like the HD asset.
On re-opening the project, DVDSP registers the fact that the video asset has changed (mainly affects menu items), but despite ensuring Preferences is set for SD, there seems no way of changing the format of its output from HD to SD.
Trying to hide the HD video asset in a sub-folder doesn't work - DVDSP re-names the new SD video as Filename (Video) 1.
Build command creates an HVDVD_TS folder containing the usual HD-type files. Creating a template in the hope of using the menu structure in a new SD project results in all the HD video assets coming with it.
I'm sure I'm being stupid, as usual, but can you point me in a better direction?

How to edit together NTSC, PAL, and Mpeg Formats

for this Museum installation that I am compiling I have to get footage from a variety of sources and media, mostly VHS and DVD. The final output would be as a Mpeg2 to be played on a server. What is the best compression to use for editing? DVpal, was my first guess, but then I also have some NTSC material which would have to be edited together with PAL stuff. How do I convert one to the other. Should I use an uncompressed format for quality, or edit in the Mpeg2 format I hope to export.

If your final output will be in PAL then it would likely be best to edit using DV-PAL as was your first guess, especially as most of your footage will be coming from low resolution sources anyway. Of course, higher quality will always be better, but if its not for projection and/or broadcast then the relatively lower quality of DV or DV50 woud be ample.
For capture from VHS you would definately benefit if you could run it through a TBC (timebase corrector), see if you can get hold of one.
For converting NTSC to PAL you can go with a cheap convertor (you'll get a cheap looking conversion) or you could just render it out from FCP (you'll have long render times and a cheap looking conversion) ... you could use Compressor, which would get you a much better conversion, but if you have any kind of budget, then invest in Graeme Natress's very affordable Standards Converter plugins - they'll give you top quality conversions that would give a very expensive hardware based converter a run for its money ... and they render faster than Apple's bulit-in conversion too.

How do I convert an entire PAL DVD to NTSC, menus and all?

Hello everyone,
I've been given a set of PAL DVD's which need to be converted into NTSC. Now, from my understanding, there is no one program available that can do this, so I've had to rip all the video tracks off, convert them to NTSC mp2's and author the DVD from the ground up in DVDSP, build a VIDEO_TS file, then use Toast to compress to a single layer DVD and burn. If anyone knows a program that can convert an entire PAL DVD to NTSC, that would be greatly appreciated.
The next problem is that when I burn any of the DVD's and put them in a duplication tower (I'm not sure if that's the actual name, but it's one of those machines where you just put the original disc in the top drive and fill the other 8 or so drives under it with blanks), it says that the burn has failed. I have tried another duplication tower and end with the same result. One option I have not tried just yet is to change the brand of media I'm using to burn, but will do so next chance I get.
I'm not sure if the two problems are related or not, but I just thought it would help.

Can a NTSC Panasonic camcorder be used with OSX 10.6.7 and be converted to PAL

I have the opportunity to buy a panasonic camcorder in USA which records in NTSC and the software to install is NTSC.
As I live in Australia and the TV & Video is PAL.
Can the software be installed and allow the mac to convert to PAL in iMovie or will I require other conversion software?

You can choose to have your project be in NTSC or PAL within iMovie under Project Properties. I don't know at all what the software is supposed to do and wouldn't know if it is even compatible with Mac OS - and, I don't think you need it. iMovie will import and is compatible with many different cameras and camcorders; take a look at this article (and be sure to click on the link for supported cameras):

Workflow for converting PAL DVD to NTSC

but am a little unclear and would appreciate some help.
I have shot 3 short movies in PAL anamorphic, edited in Final Cut Express HD 3.5, exported using the Quicktime Movie option, altered with QT Pro to put back to anamorphic, then added to an iDVD '08 widescreen project.
Everything is fine, but I have realised that some of the recipients are in the Bahamas and require NTSC.
The project is a paid commission so I want to ensure the conversion is as good as possible, without any re-digitising / editing.
I duplicated my iDVD project and have used the project info pane to change to NTSC format. I deleted the encoded assets and this has set of iDVD to re-encode. Is a re-burn all that is required once encoding is done?
It seems this is the easiest option, but are you suggesting the conversion can be better if i use the free JES deinterlacer product.
To integrate this into my workflow I am assuming I could duplicate my asset folder (that contains the quicktime exports from Final Cut) and convert them using JES.
Modification to these quicktimes (ie. a re-edit and export from Final Cut) would usually result in iDVD updating its content upon open.
Am I on the right track?
I have had a quick look at JES. I have added a file to convert and looked at the projects tab.
Do I just have to choose "Standards conversion" & select "NTSC"? What should I set out of "Blend, Telecine or Minimal Blend" for best quality.
I am using an Intel iMac with 2gb of memory.

Thanks for responding. I am currently trying a few options in JES but I was wondering if you have any idea of the best options to select.
I have tried the Export radio button option to DV Stream and Quicktime, but the resulting output is quite a bit smaller than the Final Cut Express Movie File that is the source. I am concerned the quality is reducing.
I am now using the Direct / DV-NTSC output option to see the file size of that.
With regards to iDVD, that process took a hour or so for the automatic re-encode of the project assets and then a burn. It seems to play fine on my MacBook, and there appears to be no detectable degradation. The process seems fine. Has Apple caught up with JES Deinterlacer, or is the benefit not appreciable when not using HD footage or better?
