Editing copied layers

I created a new layer and copied the contents of another layer into the new layer. Now whenever I edit the new layer the changes occur in the original layer as well. How can i fix that? I'm sure the answer is probably simpler than I think. at least I hope so.

Chances are you are editing objects in the layers and not just the locations of things. If you a edit an object, you edit all instances of that object and all items that contain it.

How can I copy layers or pieces of one page to another? I created a master, and I want to create a second master that uses much of the same setup, but I need to go in and input a background photo. However, the only quick way to get the menus and headers from the first master into the second master is actually assigning the master, but then I cannot move the photo to the back of everything. Is there such a way that I can copy those menus and such into a new master without having it assigned to the first master?

In your site plan, right click on the master you would like to use as a second master and choose 'duplicate page'. This will create a new master with all of the elements from the first master but can be edited separate from the first menu.
If I understood what you were trying to do that should work for you.

you can very easily duplicate scenes also :)
try opening the Scenes panel :)

But you can select frames or a range of frames and then
copy/cut frames.
In the new document you can then paste frames. It has a lot
of variations depending upon how you many you copy, if there are
multiple layers, what area you select before pasting and so on. It
would take a lot to describe and I'm not sure I would describe it
properly.
Generally just give it a try and get an intuitive feel for
it. The choices are available from the Edit menu but also from a
right click.
It is also possible to slect and edit multiple frames so if
you do need to move a bunch of things on different key frames that
is also possible.

Export for edit disables layers

I am trying to use Lightroom 1.3.1 with Elements 6.0. Exporting images as Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments disables all Elements layer options; they are dimmed. Yet my only options when working with RAW images is this export. Opening original images in PSE6 restores all layer functionality, so this appears to be a Lightroom issue.
I've asked Adobe support for help & received this response:
"Lightroom will flatten the image data if you choose Edit a Copy or Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments in the Edit Photo dialog. In order for Lightroom to send layer information to your external image editing application, you must choose Edit Original in this dialog."
I have searched for further information without success. Does anybody else have experience working with Lightroom and layers in their editing programs? I love the extra features of Lightroom, but would like to continue editing with layers in Elements as needed. Upgrading to PSE3 would be expensive, and now I doubt it would even solve the problem.
This is my first post in any Adobe forum. Any help is appreciated.

Lee, I did not mean to imply I disagreed with their response, only that it was not clear how it applied to my question. When I queried them again, it was made clear that exports to Elements should be made with an 8-bit file if you plan on working with Layers. I'm posting it here in case it helps others since I could not find this information anywhere else.

Copy Layers in Selection to Separate Layer ?

Is there a keyboard short-cut which takes all layers which are inside a selection and copies it to a new flattened layer ?

I have downloaded CS5-Extended onto my PC as an upgrade to elements premiere 8. I still have the entire elements suite on my PC and functioning. The PC is a new Dell 4 core with windows 7, six G of RAM, and lots of HD space.
CS-55 works fine but has one very serious problem that seems to be a regular (several tests produce the same result) occurrance.
Selecting "edit" then "copy" when a selection is completely ready for copy/paste to a new layer freezes the entire program. No controls will do anything to the program no matter how long or what buttons are pushed. The PC stil works however with other programs which surprises me (I'm very computer literate).
The only method that I can find to close and "fix" the problem with CS5 after a crash is to completely shut down the entire PC and force a shutdown at that time (to get the PC to log off and shut down).
The real difficulty now occurs on re-starting the PC. The system seems to completely fill RAM on a re-start which makes the entire PC slow and almost non-responsive. This took some experimenting to "figure out." Starting regular office programs (Word, excel, etc) takes very long, and I get an intermittent "program not responding" display during the program start.
When started, the program(s) are extremely sluggish, and mouse pointers are not linear movement but "bounce" from place to place on the screen.
I considered doing a system restore to place the system back to a state before CS5 installation, but did more experimenting before this (in order to preserve the downloaded trial version of CS5 before my (already purchased) box arrives in the mail.
When starting CS-5 (after a crash and restart), it takes over a minute to start and does not respond well at all once started. When trying to open the previous file then "closing all files" the system seems to "unlock" all RAM and places the entire PC back to normal function.
This is a continuous problem affecting my system and all stems from an "edit / copy" set of commands.
Please help with this one. This problem is obviously a serious one and cannot continue with my set up.

Thanks for the fast response. In answer to your questions, I’m using the 64 bit version of the CS-5 software. I have not received any bad “news” or reports about “bad ram.” This from IOLO system mechanic 10, and windows performance itself.
Let me try task manager / performance both before any Photoshop use, and after a crash. I’ll also get some information from system mechanic and any other sources that I can come up with.
I’m not sure why this crash happens after an “edit / paste” sequence and (possibly) not anything else. I just did however find the program crash under these circumstances:
Photoshop running with a (7mg picture loaded). Turn on elements organizer with a 35,000 picture catalog that I’ve been using in elements 7 and 8 (and premiere 8 ). Turn off organizer and return to Photoshop only to find that Photoshop is now frozen with a dual vertical arrow instead of a mouse pointer. No action will recover the program at this point.
Question:
Will my “preferences” in photoshop set to a very high ram allowance affect crashes in the program? What other preferences settings might be causing a problem.
I can talk to Dell tech support if need be as this PC is only 4 months old.

Select all the frames you want to copy, right click and select copy frames then select the file you want to paste them into and right click again and then paste frames.
The layers the frames are should come across with them.

ITunes: I can no longer copy a playlist into a Pages (Word) document by using select all edit copy edit paste. Why won't this work now? All I get when I paste is a series of Speaker symbols.

I'm having a similar problem, but only with jpg's. I have PS CS6, CC, and CC 2014. Other image file formats function normally with regard to the "open with" list. PS CC 2014 appears on the list. But with jpg's only PS CC appears on the "open with" list and 2014 can't be added by the browsing for it.
The curious thing is that if I have any of the three versions of Photoshop open, click on Photoshop CC in the "open with" list, the image opens in whatever version is already open on my computer. This is true of all image formats. No matter which version I pick from the "open with" list it opens in the currently running program. I use only the latest version so keeping it open all the time is an easy work around. I won't uninstall any of the earlier versions lest more file association quirks result. it would be nice to have this matter fixed.

Photoshop CS5/Lightroom 3 integration issue - "Edit Copy with Lightroom Adjustments" does not work

When clicking "Edit Copy with Lightoomroom Adjustments" from Lightroom, I get an error in Lightroom 3 complaining that the Camera Raw plug-in is not up to date; full message below.
"This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 6.1 for full compatibility.

After I click "Open Anyways", Photoshop CS5 is initiated but it seems to have lost context of why it is opened and asks me what file I want to open (i.e. the Open As dialog).
"Edit Copy" and "Edit Original" from Lightroom 3 works as expected and opens images fine in Photoshop, CS5 however.
My installation is on Windows 7. I currently also have Lightroom 1.4 and Photoshop CS3 installed. Everything worked fine with the old configuration. I also tried the same workflow in Lightroom 1.4 again just now, which is now linked to CS5 instead of CS3. The "Edit Copy with Lightroom Adjustments" also work just fine.
Things that I have tried but do not worked:
I did an Update via the Help -> Update menu, and also manually downloaded the Camera Raw 6.1 plug-in.
Blew away the Photoshop preferences file
Made sure that Lightroom 3 points to Photoshop for editor
I'm thinking that I'll try uninstall CS3 next. Anyone else encountered this issue?

[CS5.1 (12.1) ACR 6.5RC / LR 3.5RC; MacbookPro 4gb Leopard 10.5.8 ] As a Lightroom instructor, up until now this has been a vexxing problem to explain to my students. Even if ACR in Photoshop is up to date (I just downloaded 6.5RC and installed the PS Plugin), I still get the error when attempting to edit from Lightroom 3.5RC. I deleted the PS prefs file to no avail. I was not willing to re-install Photoshop as a solution (per some blog's suggestion), although that might be the ultimate answer. But what an ordeal if so!
For a solution, I went back to a resolution I devised when I had a CS3 compatibility problem with LR3. I went into the Preferences of Lightroom and manually chose the Photoshop app as the "custom" image editor. I went back to edit the file in PS from Lightroom and the ACR error disappeared. Try it. Yes, this means you need to use the Custom editor as your image editor, but it seems to have resolved the issue.

Forms 10G - Edit- Copy Diabled

Environment - Oracle Forms 10g
I have a wierd problem with EDIT->COPY option.
I query the screen having the cursor on a field, after the record is queried I invoke the Pop Up menu to copy the field, but the Copy option is disabled.
I even tried Edit Menu - >Copy...same thing.
But when I click on anyother field and click again this field then the COPY option is enabled.
Any solution for this wierd issue?? :-)

I followed your instructions and installed Developer Suite 10G on Windows Vista Home Premium edition. I have Oracle 11G DB running on the same machine.
Two points, Steve:
1. When I tried to set the maximum virtual memory to 6110 an error message displayed from Windows and told me that I can't set the maximum virtual memory to more than 4096. I set it to 4090 and it worked and I got nothing wrong during the installation process.
2. After installing JInitiator and disabling Java on Firefox I called the http://127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet page and everything seemed to be OK because the Oracle Forms Services logo appeared and then a successful installation message appeared , but as I clicked (ok) to continue a gray screen appeared inside the browser (like the one displayed when you try to run a Java applet inside a browser) and then I wait to death till something appears but sadly nothing. I just get a blank gray screen inside my Firefox browser.
Do you have any idea what to do to solve the problem?

PSE9/Win 7: Edit/Copy does a Cut?

I'm running PSE 9 on Windows 7.
I must have forgotten how to do a copy/paste.
Here is what I did:
m - to select a rectangular area
Edit/Copy - to make a copy of the contents of the Selection
Click on the Move Tool.
When I start to move my selection I see that my original selection area is gone.
I've also tried doing a Ctrl+t after the Edit/Copy.
I get the same results. I can move my selection. But my original area is cut out.
My circumvention is to do a Ctrl-v after selecting the Move tool.
That seems to copy my selection back to where it started.
Then I can manipulate the copy.
Thanks for any help. I don't know how I managed to forget how to do this.

Copying the selection simply places it on the system Clipboard. That copy is unavailable for any purpose until it is pasted somewhere, as you found when doing Ctrl+V, or as 99jon described pasting it in on its own layer.
