Editing document text in Acrobat 10.1.9 - Black boxes!

Someting when i "Edit Document Text" in a PDF in 10.1.9 black boxes will appear all over the document.  Sometimes they show up and sometimes they don't.  Any idea what would be causing the black boxes and how to shut it off?
Thanks!

Hi kasey102,
Possibly the fonts used in the pdf do not exist on your system.
Is the behaviour true for any pdfs?

  • 'Edit Document Text' in Adobe Reader XI

  • Acrobat X Pro Ctrl E option for Edit Document Text tool

    Hi,
When I use the "Edit Document Text" tool (formerly TouchUp Text) in Adobe X Pro and press Ctrl E, it's saying "Properties No current selection".
However, pressing Ctrl E on other tools such as Comments, Link etc, the Properties toolbar is showing properly.  And when I switch back into using the  "Edit Document Text" tool, the Properties toolbar will show as grayed out.
I tried using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro and it's doing the same thing.
Is the Ctrl E Properties toolbar is not really available for "Edit Document Text" tool?  Do I really have to right click on the area and choose Properties?

    Hi gracet41265898,
Please refer the page associated with this Link (Unable to access Acrobat's Tool properties toolbar (greyed out, or "no current selection") ).
Please let me know if this resolves your issue or in case your problem persists.

  • Adobe Acrobat X Version 10.1.0 Edit Document Text tool not working

    Hi Adobe People
I am suing Adobe Acrobat X Version 10.1.0. I have a document open and I would like to delete a sentence.
So I click on tools and navigate to Edit Document Text.
I highlight the sentence I would like to delete. I press delete and nothing happens. I go to the tool bar at the top and click on edit and the only option it will give me is to copy.
What am I not getting here. I have no idea what is the problem and I am unsure how to solve it.
FYI I want to edit the content in the PDF because I do not have the original source file.
    Thanks

    I'm stumped.
I found the original source file. It is a word file. I edited one page in word.
Then I opened the original file and I clicked on Tools, navigated to Pages and clicked on Insert from File.
    I got the following message
"This document restricts some Acrobat features to allow for extended features in Adobe Reader. To create a copy of the document that is not restricted (and has no extended features in Adobe Reader), Click Save a Copy.
    So I do just that.
I try to do the same thing with a saved copy of the document and now it won't give me the option to Insert from File.
I neet to insert a page becuse this is a long document with many text boxes. It was originally created in word. Then converted to a PDF. I do not want to recreate all of these text boxes.
    Ugh...
    Anyone?....

  • Cannot edit document text

I selected Edit Document Text under Tools | Content | Edit Text & Objects. I place my cursor on the pdf and nothing happens. I then thought that the problem might be that Acrobat does not recognize the text. So I enabled OCR. I then placed my cursor before the text I wanted to change, typed, and nothing happened. The cursor did move to the right, but no new text appeared and the underlying text remained unchanged.
How can I edit the text?

To see changes, you have to have OCR'd with Clearscan. If you used either of the Searchable Text options, then you would only change the hidden text (I have not tried that) and the picture of the original would remain unchanged.

  • What controls the color of the cursor that selects text when you use the "Edit Document Text" tool?

Hi, I have had a student ask me a question I cannot answer: what controls the color of the cursor that selects text when you use the "Edit Document Text" tool?
I have only seen it appear as a black semicircle over each letter, but at a different computer in our training facility, this same tool appears as an aqua-green highlight.
Is it a preference I never noticed? Thanks for any info.

What version of Acrobat? What operating system?

  • "Edit Document Text" function in Acrobat X renders squares instead of actual text

As the title says, just trying to edit text, but I'm getting a sqaure for every letter I type, in the same style / color as the text I'm trying to edit. I have the proper fonts installed on my system that corrospond to the text I'm editing within the dcument so I'm kinda stumped as to what could be the issue.

  • Embed fonts using the Edit Document Text tool

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7c75.w.h tml

Thanks Steve.  I guess it shouldn't be a problem then.  Both of the documents would have been created by aperture and therefore be of the same resolution to start with.
One more question if I might:  I'm test-driving Acrobat Pro (don't know much about it yet).  I've been using Acrobat standard for simple things like adding/replacing pages.  Would Acrobat standard save at the same quality of the original document or is there some loss of quality there versus using Acrobat Pro?
    Thanks again,
    Michael

  • Edited PDF in photoshop and edit text in acrobat

I am trying to edit an existing PDF that has a blue backround and text on it. I think it was made in photoshop. I had to fix a logo on it to so I brought the pdf to photoshop and edited the logo. But now I can't edit the text in acrobat professional! I could before I changed the logo.
Is there something I need to do in photoshop first before I make it a pdf? Or should I just create the text in acrobat professional?
I need to know for work. Reply soon.
    Thanks

  • Proofread and correct OCR'd text in Acrobat 10 Pro

How do you proofread and correct text produced by OCR from a scanned document, in Acrobat 10 Pro?
I scan (many, large) paper documents, then use Recognise Text. After the OCR phase, if I save PDFs as text, I can see many scan errors.
I would like to be able to correct those errors in the scanned text, so that names etc can be successfully searched. However I cannot find any way to view and correct the scanned text.
I experimented with Tools / Content / Edit Document Text, but I cannot see how to display the scanned text to allow correction. It appears to operate on the PDF image. But if I try to change the document image to correct known errors (e.g. in spacing), and then save the PDF as text again, the string where I changed the image becomes gibberish.
How is Edit Document Text supposed to work? Is there any way to achieve what I am looking for (fixing many errors in large OCR'd documents)?
    Regards,
    Sue.

"This is a 76-page document, and the users will expect to see the image looking like the scanned original."
That locks it down. The only way to satisfy this is Searchable Image (Exact).
The scanned image serves as the an objective replacement for the source hardcopy.
The OCR output exists to facilitate search/find.
At the end of the day there is no practical means of editing OCR's Hidden Text layer with it in the PDF.
That's not to say you cannot work at it and get results. But, the operative word is practical.
In that context you may want to look over a reply I made here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/950209?tstart=0
To increase accuracy of OCR recognition:
Yes, there are dedicated OCR applications (desktop or server). Having used several of each as well as Acrobat's OCR I've learned that also significant is the scanner and the quality of the hardcopy source.
Regarding the remainder of your post above.
Ok, I cannot replicate what you describe with a PDF I've been using.
It is a scanned image of a single page of textual content.
After ClearScan I can export to Word (&, of course, have some cleanup required).
I can use the TouchUp Text / Edit Document Text tool to select all the PDF page's content (the ClearScan output).
Changed the font to TimesNewRoman, saved, and exported to Word.
The content in Word needed cleanup.
Next, I selected various words and typed in a replacement word.
After a Save I Exported to Word. The changed words carried through.
re: Q1 - What you describe is symptomatic of the Hidden text output of Searchable Image / Searchable Image (Exact) and not ClearScan. So, I'm perplexed.
re: Q2 - An advantage of ClearScan is being able to edit a text string to correct it. So, sure, why not correct? With that said, it can be a tedious and labor intensive activity. As well, typos are possible during correction which begs the question "Who bells the cat?"  8^)
re: Q3 - If corrections to the ClearScan output meets your needs an export to Word may not be needed.
However, sometimes ClearScan cannot recognize the image of a character and leaves it as a bitmapped image.
So, to correct you'd have to get into a word processor.

  • Editable form text editing messing up the whole form

    Hi All,
I've created a fillable form in Acrobat X but at the end, I realized that I left a spelling mistake. Now when I try to fix this mistake using Edit Document Text, it changes the orientation and alignment of other fields around it causing messing up the whole form. Can anyone advise any solution. I can provide the form to you to have a look or correct it for me if someone can kindly. Please advise as this is urgent and this form needs to be delivered ASAP. Please see the screenshot below. I need to correct the spelling of Blocked which is written as BOCKED without changing other formatting of the document. Thanks in anticipation!

    Hi @Gilad,
Thanks for the suggestion but this file was originally created in Word and after conversion to PDF, I've made a lot of radio buttons, check-boxes in this file which I certainly don't want to redo. Now if I convert this page back to Word and edit this single word, then it means that I would have to create all the radio buttons, check boxes etc again which is time consuming. Any help if I can just correct the spelling of this single word without changing the formatting of the fields besides it?

  • Edit doc text writes over text not replace

my issue is after scanning a document and then using acrobat pro and trying to edit document the edit document text just writes over the text it doesnt replace it . is it possable to fix this?

How are you trying to edit? I assume you did OCR, so was that ClearScan or searchable text. The latter just displays a picture of the scan and puts the text on another layer. Editing is not really a great option in Acrobat unless you are looking for minor edits. I suspect that the method you are using to edit text is not what should be used. If you simply have graphics, then you can not change the display anyway. To have the text displayed be the text to edit, you have to use ClearScan and then you typically get text that can not be edited.

  • Track changes when editing pdf text?

Is it possible to track chnages when editing the text of a pdf?
    If so, how?
And if not, is it possible to make all edits I do on a document in another colour to differentiate the original text from my editing text? (Without pressing a colour swatch every time of course...?)
    Many thanks,
    Wendy

OK, thanks. Now, can I change the colour of the text on all the changes I make then? In the Edit Document Text tool, if I right click, then I get the choice of font and colour. I have changed the colour to red so my edits will stand out and yet when I make a change the text colout does not change.
    Can you help?
    Thanks,
    W
