Editing /etc/squirrelmail/config/conf.pl while Mail server is running

Do you advise stopping mail services before editing the conf.pl file?

That's all I needed to know. Thanks ptero!

How to edit etc/apache2/httpd.conf? Pica won't take my password.
I can navigate to the pico prompt in terminal ... but when it asks for pw, I try to type, the cursor just blinks, doesn't move, nothing.
But if there's another way to edit this file, I'll try.
Just want to uncomment the line about php5 module.
Thanks!!! xoxo

I like the tutorial, but yeah you are right, it's sudo, not pico that's not taking my pw. I can sudo pico or sudo vi, either way it asks me for my password but then the cursor doesn't respond to my typing.
I'm used to vi. You use control keys to navigate and make changes. It has two modes, command and insert. In command mode, to delete the '#' character, for example, move the cursor to '#' and type 'x' to delete it. Type 'i' to enter insert mode and add new text. Press 'esc' to go back to command mode.
There are numerous ways to save and quit. Usually you type 'ZZ' to save and quit. On some of these system files, their permissions are too restrictive for that. You have to do it the hard way. Type ':w!' to save. The 'w' is for "write" and the '!' is to force a write on a read-only. Then you can quit with "q!'.
I've never edited an administrative file with pico.
I can't even chmod to give myself rights to write to httpd.conf . "Operation not permitted."
Don't try that. Many tools will rightfully refuse to even launch if they detect that their administrative config files have been incorrectly modified.
internet chatter seems to suggest this 10.7.x is, like, super duper secure. And I'm new to macs. I'm logged in as admin, I have all the permissions I can find myself via finder ... but maybe there's a double-secret admin ...
There is, it is "sudo". Only an admin user has the ability to use sudo to gain root permissions.

• Warning EJB EJB Deployment: Fnv cannot be redeployed while the server is running. de.dr_staedtler.extern.audi.fnv.data.ejb.FnvBean is located in the server's classpath.

Hi,
i have developed some EJB, that are dependent from each others.
So I set the classpath to a lib-directory with my EJB.
When i try to deploy, i become a warning
<Warning> <EJB> <EJB Deployment: Fnv cannot be redeployed while the server is
running. de.dr_staedtler.extern.audi.fnv.data.ejb.FnvBean is located in the server's
classpath.>
But the EJB's are deployed and the client can connect it.
Why is the warning? It is important or I can ignore it?
Thanks for your time.

It means that bean classes are in the system classpath and therefore
cannot be reloaded. If you do not plan on hot-redeploying your beans
you can ignore this message.

• Newie Mail server and running other services

We have a small office network of 6 macs that connect to a Panther server, this server provides DNS and file sharing and thats about it a Filemaker Sever and Retrospect Server. I doesn't suffer from heavy use
I have been using a a separate mac to run Quickmail server 1 (os9) and I need to upgrade it as some of the mail protocols are out of date.
We have a static IP address assigned to our mail gateway by our service provider.
My question or advice
Should I just start using OS X server to run mail services
or
Upgrade Quickmail and continue running it separately on a new mac mini (or similar)
My concerns are at the moment any problem with email locally can be solved pretty much without effecting the other server or the network.
Thanks

The basic setup is prety simple...
Replace following with your own equivalents...
Domain name: woopee.com (the domain name after the "@" in your emails)
Host name: mail.woopee.com (the hostname your MX record points to. Does not need to match server hostname. This will be the hostname mail server uses when communicating with other servers)
Local Host Aliases: woopee.com (a list of the domains you want to accept mail for. Probably just same as Domain name?)
Local network: 192.168.10.0/24 (LAN IP range for local users. Used to bypass authentication when they send mail out)
Server Admin-> Mail-> General...
Tick:Enable POP
Tick:Enable IMAP
Tick:Enable SMTP, Allow incoming mail, Enter Domain name & Host name (from above).
Mail-> Relay
Tick: Accept SMTP relays... Enter localhost IP: 127.0.0.1/32 and Local network (from above).
Tick: Use these junk mail rejection servers. Add: zen.spamhaus.org
Mail->Filters
Tick: scan for junk mail. Minimum score: 5 (can be reduced later)
Junk mail should be: Delivered (will just tag and forward to recipient)
Tick: Attach subject tag: * Junkmail *
Tick: Scan email for viruses
Infected messages should be: Deleted
Tick: update junk mail & virus database: 1 time per day
Mail->Advanced->Security
SMTP: none (this prevents smtp authentication from anyone outside your Local network)
IMAP: Tick: Clear, Plain, Cram-md5 (or leave all unticked if only using pop accounts)
POP: Tick: APOP
Mail->Advanced->Hosting
Local Host Aliases: Add: localhost & woopee.com (separate entries, see Local host aliases, above)
That's it (I think ...although I cannot guarantee I have not missed something). There will be no problem setting this up and seeing it going whilst still using the existing mail server. Set up client accounts to send and receive from new server and you can send mail around internally to test. Last thing would be to change your firewall port-forwarding for SMTP from existing server to new one.
Watch the mail.log in Console for any errors & do plenty tests.
Ensure users have mail enabled in Workgroup Manager.
There are plenty mods available beyond this. Have a good read through the mail services manual (I know its a bit confusing at times) and you should see where the above settings fit in.
Lots of stuff on the forum here which you can search for. Spam filtering in particular can be made far more effective but requires editing of the underlying unix configuration files - again, plenty of previous discussions about that on forum. Meantime, the zen.spamhaus.org RBL will filter out a great many spammers.

• How come i know the ip of the mail server at run time

i'm developing a mail distribution server that can be used to send and receive the mails. now i would like to know that how come i know the ip of the host to which i want to send the e-mail. e.g. if the request comes in from the user and contains the address [email protected] or [email protected] then how come i know the ip address of mail server of yahoo or hotmail
pls help
its urgent

dear manish,
i seriously believe that you do not need to know the ip address of the host server of the destination address on the mail.u just need to route your mails through the SMTP server for your organisation where ur going to use this server.
regards,

• Squirrelmail, IMAP folders, and Apple Mail

Squirrelmail as included with Mac OS X Server lets you remotely access your Inbox via a web-browser. It also automatically creates sub-folders to store drafts, sent, and trashed emails as done during a Squirrelmail session.
These have a folder structure like this
Inbox
...Drafts
...Sent
...Trash
When you look at this in Apple mail you will see a triangle next to your Inbox and turning it down reveals the same sub-folders.
The purpose of this posting, is that I believe this structure is not the same as the default Apple Mail structure and as such Apple Mail and Squirrelmail will not automatically be using the same IMAP folders to store drafts, sent and trash.
It is possible in Apple Mail to select one of these Squirrelmail created folders, and go to the Mailbox menu and select the "Use This Mailbox For..." command to make it the folder to use for that purpose. It is also possible to edit the Squirrelmail config.php file to adjust its settings which as default will be
$defaultfolderprefix = 'INBOX/';
$trash_folder = 'Trash';
$sent_folder = 'Sent';
$draft_folder = 'Drafts';
My question is what if any, would be a better setting for Squirrelmail so that Squirrelmail puts the folders in the right place for Apple Mail and uses the right names for Apple Mail so that an Apple Mail user does not have to change anything?
The benefit would be that rather each and every user having to alter the Apple Mail setup, I could do one edit of the config file for Squirrelmail and this would then apply forever for all users.

Ok, I may have worked out the answer myself.
Apple Mail in the Apple Mail program uses the folder names
Drafts
Sent
Trash
However it appears to use +on the server+
Drafts
Sent Messages
Deleted Messages
So it appears that in order to get Squirrelmail to match the settings Apple Mail uses and therefore save the Apple Mail user the hassle at their end you need to do two things.
1. Change the IMAP folder path in Squirrelmail from the default 'INBOX/' to '' (nothing)
2. Change the special IMAP folder names in Squirrelmail from the default to match Apple Mail
Therefore in the the Squirrelmail config.php you will go from the default
$defaultfolderprefix = 'INBOX/';
$trash_folder = 'Trash';
$sent_folder = 'Sent';
$draft_folder = 'Drafts';
to
$defaultfolderprefix = '';
$trash_folder = 'Deleted Messages';
$sent_folder = 'Sent Messages';
$draft_folder = 'Drafts';
which matches what Apple Mail is using.

• Editing /etc/hosts

On OS X client I routinely edit /etc/hosts to add names for my various servers, local and remote, as well as to block some of the better known malware and virus sites and the more egregious Internet hucksters -- er, ad sites.
10.1.10.47 rama
10.1.10.48 athene
144.15.97.289 web yogurt davone
127.0.0.1 scum.sucker.com
127.0.0.1 evil.banners.net
etc.
I'm hesitant to do the same thing on Server (for example, I know better than to manually edit /etc/apache2/http.conf). My current hosts file in client is over 2500 lines, so if I have to manage this through Server Admin I'd like to get started now.

Ever since I started using OS X Server, I haven't touched /etc/hosts. I would use the DNS server to deal with the scum.suckers.com, and Workgroup Manager (and DNS again, unfortunately) to manage the actual hosts on your network. I'm curious on the efficacy of managing 2500 actual hosts with Workgroup Manager, though.

• Mail Server Woes

Hey All,
I could use some help debugging Mail on my Mac Mini Server (10.8.2 - All updates installed). Two issues going on: mail is not arriving in the inbox and outgoing mail sent from the server does not arrive at the destination - it doesn't matter if its addressed to an internal email or an outside (gmail) account. I can authenticate with the server fine. All the appropriate mail ports are open (25, 110, 143, 587, 993, 995) on the Airport Extreme. I've tried turning off the Junk Mail settings and it made no difference. I'm open to ideas on where to start trouble shooting? If its helpful, I can include the postfix.conf file.
Mail Server: mail.eclimb.org
Any ideas?

You need to look at your logs, if things are failing that is the first place to start to see what the system is reporting.
Look at IMAP Log, Mail Server Log, SMTP Log in logs section of Server app.
Also BTW your external DNS name for your mail server is 'mail.eclimb.org' but your server hostname looks to be 'sawtooth.eclimb.org'. Your server may not like that fact and also RFCs state & DNS best practices advise not to use CNAME alias for mail server machine. CNAMEs are OK for things like web & FTP but not SMTP (the MX record).
See restrictions section in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNAME_record
Anyway look at your logs first while you are doing test emails:
in from Internet,
out from LAN and
between two email addresses in your domain using two hosts inside your LAN (i.e. message never goes out to Internet).

• Slow mail server vs. amount of messages

Hi,
I notice that when a user on the system accumulates a lot of messages, like maybe 100 mb or so of space, logging into IMAP takes forever, as long as 2 minutes. But when this user's account is cleaned out, it works instantly again. Is there anyway to prevent this?

Issue /usr/share/squirrelmail/config/conf.pl
Not sure if this is your issue, but worth trying:
Select "4. General Options" and make sure server side sorting is not disabled.

• Mail server stops IMAP and POP services, SMTP won't work

Hello fellow Lion Server users,
I am trying hard to get my mail server productive. I want to fetch mails from my ISP's IMAP mail server and distribute it to all my devices via my own mail server. Also the mails shall be sent via ISPs SMTP.
After managing it being able to send and receive email in the way I want I realized that web server was down. Because I want to use the integrated web mail and Wiki server I had to fix that. After restoring to default values in httpd.conf and others I got that problem solved just to realize that I am not able any more to send and receive email. I would be grateful if you could help me out.
The current status is that Server admin app claims the mail server still running, but POP, IMAP stopped whilst SMTP is running. In my mail.app I can send Emails successfully but they never reach the addressee. Receiving is just not possible at all. The connection doctor in integrated in Mail.app won't find a problem. It claims SMTP and IMAP connections I used before are working.
I use a dyndns forwarding to my server at home. Lion server is up to date. Port forwarding in the router is enabled (for each port Apple suggests).
Even in local network (with this very machine) it is not possible to successfully send or receive emails using localhost. My guess is that something went wrong in the configuration files but I don't know where I have to look and for what exactly.
I also tried a program called MailServe after running into the first problems with the mail server which did so far a good job in configuring of Postfix, Dovecot and Fetchmail but now I am stuck.
Do you have any hints for me, your help would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

I think I may have just figured out a part of this puzzle. I have more than just my att account set up in Mail. Even though all of my accounts are setup to use the ATT SMTP server only (with the appropriate ATT login info) I am getting the same rejection notices as everyone else.
I noticed that in the rejection notice though, that it was saying I was sending mail from my other main account, not my sbcglobal (ATT) account. I thought that was strange since I set up all my accounts to use the SBC (ATT) login info for ATT's SMTP Server. So obviously it is a problem in Mail. Mail is somehow confused and sending some wrong piece of info to the SMTP server. When I changed the sender from my other account to my SBCGLOBAL account, the mail went right out with no other problems.
So this isn't a solution for those of you who are struggling with only an ATT account, but I think it points to a possible problem within Mail. The answer might be to delete the accounts in Mail and set them back up again. It's looking like Apple might need to make a tweak to Mail to fix this if indeed this is the correct cause. Hope this helps someone.

• Wiki Notification with other Mail Server Software

Hi everyone,
i am stucked and maybe you could help me out.
I am running a Mountain Lion Server with a wiki on it. I want to use e-mail-notifications, so a user gets an email
if someone other changes the wiki etc.
I set up everything, set the mail adress in my profile and marked the notification box in the wiki.
No mail comes in after a change.
Today i updated the kerio mail server i run on the same machine. To update it, i need to stop the
kerio mail server. After i stopped it, the wiki service sends out all the notification e-mails! So my
thought is, that the kerio mail server blocks the wiki-service (and i think the mail-service of osx-server)
so that no notification e-mails get out.
So what can i do to get the wiki-notification-emails running when the kerio-server is also up?
Maybe changing some ports of the mail/wiki-service?
Thank you for your help!
Greetings,

• Reload certs while server is running.

Sorry, i re-reply but this time i format the code.
Hi guys, hope you're doing great. Here's my question:
Is there any way to reload my truststore while the server is running?
I mean, i'm using mutual authentication in a client -server shceme. At the server side, i have a keystore and a truststore. The fact is that when i run the server, i set the properties with :
System.+setProperty+("java.net.trustStore", "My_TrustStore");
and it work fine.
Then, while the server is running, using the keytool, i create and import another cert to the trustStore (My_TrustStore), but the new client cann't connect to the server with this new cert ´cause the server cann't find it at the trustore.
At this point, if i stop the server and start it again, the new clilent can get a connection to the server using the new cert.
Is there anyway to reload the trustore while the server is running?
Hope you understand the problem and can help me. If anybody knows about a good tutorial, info, article, link, or whatever help me to understand how the SSL Api works, i'll thank you.
Here's the code of my server, this may clarify how i'm trying to do this:
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
loadTrustStore();
ServerSocketFactory ssf = SSLServerSocketFactory.getDefault();
ServerSocket ss = ssf.createServerSocket(3000);
SSLServerSocket sss = (SSLServerSocket)ss;
sss.setNeedClientAuth(true);
while(true){
loadTrustStore();
MyThreat t = new MyThreat(ss.accept);
public static void loadTrustStore(){
System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStore", keyStore);
System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStoreType",keyStoreType);
System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStorePassword", kesStorePassword);
System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStore", trustStore);
System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStoreType",trustStoreType);
}this code is for testing purpouse only, but i guess you'll get the idea, i'm trying to update the truststore every time a new client is comming.

You shouldn't need to do any of that as long as the clients use CA-signed certificates. The truststore will trust them.
These issues usually arise when people try to use the truststore for authorization (is this person allowed to connect?) as well as authentication (is this person who he says he is?) That's not what it's for. It is only to establish an authenticated identity. Tomcat et al all have well-defined authorization schemes, in fact Tomcat has several. Use them.

• Enable wine...edit /usr/etc/wine/config

Enjoying arch manipulation but am not up to the big wine/config setup details.
Perhaps there is a short description of this
task somewhere available.  :?:

I went through a copy of the wine config and copied it in /usr/etc/wine.config.
The file follows:WINE REGISTRY Version 2
;; All keys relative to \Machine\Software\Wine\Wine\Config
;; If you think it is necessary to show others your complete config for a
;; bug report, filter out empty lines and comments with
;; grep -v "^;" ~/.wine/config | grep '.'
;; MS-DOS drives configuration
;; Each section has the following format:
;; [Drive X]
;; "Path"="xxx" (Unix path for drive root)
;; "Type"="xxx" (supported types are 'floppy', 'hd', 'cdrom' and 'network')
;; "Label"="xxx" (drive label, at most 11 characters)
;; "Serial"="xxx" (serial number, 8 characters hexadecimal number)
;; "Filesystem"="xxx" (supported types are 'msdos'/'dos'/'fat', 'win95'/'vfat', 'unix')
;; This is the FS Wine is supposed to emulate on a certain
;;   directory structure.
;;   Recommended:
;;   - "win95" for ext2fs, VFAT and FAT32
;; - "msdos" for FAT16 (ugly, upgrading to VFAT driver strongly recommended)
;; DON'T use "unix" unless you intend to port programs using Winelib !

• [SOLVED]xpra + winswitch - best practice due to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*

Running xpra causes some headaches.
The application builds fine and installs just perfectly, the troubles comes from the default Xorg configuration is no longer stored in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, it's now stored and read from numerous files under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ where just so happen to be my 5-nvidia.conf.

tl;dr: 5-nvidia.conf is trying to get loaded after xf86-video-dummy is loaded (which is the default for xpra).
Now to the question: What's the best practice because there's no information about this issue, and i can't be the only one who's run in to this since the xorg.conf was removed. At the moment I move all my nvidia configs out of the way, start xpra and move them back in. This works for the better part as long as i execute xpra with my own scripts.
But is there a better way (which doesn't perhaps include recreating xorg.conf since that appears to be something you should walk away from)?
Last edited by Torxed (2013-10-04 10:29:35)

Good thinking! (xpra is basically just screen but for x, or a X11 tunnel via SSH).
After a really quick poking around and remembering that xpra really just uses xorg-server-xvfb and at the very bottom of /etc/xpra/xpra.conf there's a line that says:
xvfb=xpra_Xdummy -dpi 96 -noreset -nolisten tcp +extension GLX +extension RANDR +extension RENDER -logfile ${HOME}/.xpra/Xorg.${DISPLAY}.log -config /etc/xpra/xorg.conf
Appending -configdir appears to be working.
Here are the full steps:
[torxed@archie ~]$ sudo cp -r /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d /etc/xpra/
[torxed@archie ~]$ sudo rm /etc/xpra/xorg.conf.d/*nvidia*
[torxed@archie ~]$ sudo sed -i '$s/$/ -configdir \/etc\/xpra\/xpra.conf.d/' /etc/xpra/xpra.conf
*nvidia* would have to match your graphic-driver-config that would cause xorg-server-xvbf to crash.
I'll update the wiki and put a mention on the package about it because this either has to be standard or well known from the start because it really just breaks the package all together.
