Editing file name

One simple thing that I can't figure out.
I just want to change the filename on one file... no template needed, no
batch filename change.. just a simple filename correction to change a
character that I mistyped...
For example, if I want to change 1234.CR2 to 1235.CR2... what do I
highlight, or right-click, or whatever just to change that one character.
Where do I highlight a filename and edit it???? There has to be a simple
way!

Simple.
a) Create a new empty catalog
b) From within the new catalog, select "Import from Catalog" and import
the existing catalogs one at a time.
If you are importing ALL of the images in the catalogs, I would suggest
that you no longer ever use the old catalogs... move them to a place
where you won't open them accidentally. The reason for this is that by
importing data from an existing catalog by copying it rather than moving
it, you now have the same photo in two different catalogs. Making a
change in one catalog will not make a change in another catalog, wich
can result in much confusion, so you need to find a way to make sure
that you are ALWAYS using the SAME catalog, in your case the new one
that you are creating.
Generally speaking, when working TO-FROM multiple catalogs, you need to
make sure that your photo ends up being in only one of the catalogs, so
you can either remove the photo from your old catalog or just not use
the old catalog anymore.

  • Can't Select/Edit File Name Text - they go blank

Sometimes when I try to select a file name to edit it, the name disappears when I first click it. This often happens in list view. If I switch to icon view, most of the times, but not always, I can then select the file name text. Sometimes if I switch back to list view, then I can select the file name text as expected, but again not always.
It is intermittent so I can't give any consistent info on how or when it happens.
    Thanks,

Try this. Select the file and hit the enter key. Does that highlight the name without deleting it? If so, adjust your mouse click settings and see if that fixes the problem. If not, create a new admin account, log into, and see if the problem's gone. Report back.

  • Editing File Names

Anyone know if there is a way to DELETE the first few letters at the begining or the end of a file name? I am mostly dealing with audio files. So if there is another program that does this please let me know.
I have tons of audio files that need to be edited. Thank you guys

I recommend command line utilities (run by Run Shell Script.action). You can then phrase your question in very specific terms and ask in the UNIX section of these fora. By using the command line tools, you should be able to accomplish everything you need. (OS X includes a slew of command line utilities - or programs, that most users don't venture into)

  • Is it possible to edit file names of songs?

    Hey everyone!
I purchased a 30GB white iPod about 2 weeks ago and I imported a ton of songs from various data and audio cds into Itunes. However, many of the songs are not appearing on my iPod that are showing in my iTunes library. There are about 150 songs that have not transferred to my "Amanda's iPod" tab. After reading several posts here I tried to use Yamipod and that was unsuccessful and I tried to drag and drop files from the library to the ipod tab but that didnt work either.
I have a couple hundred songs that have incomplete tags with no artist or album information which I assume is the reason they are not correctly being filed into my iPod. I used a free trial of Anapod but I think I need the full version to successfully change the files in my iTunes library.
I am sorry if this post is confusing but I am not sure how to properly articulate my problem. I need suggestions for programs to edit the music "tags" and make all of my songs file under their respective artists in my iPod.
    Thank you,
    Amanda

I tried editing a dozen or so random songs that way and it wont let me because I imported the songs from data cd's from my old computer. It asks if I would like to find the file but I dont feel like sorting through the 10 discs I imported the songs from each time. Would consolidating my library work? I am not sure how to save all the imported songs in a way that would let me edit their tags. Grrr...I was wrong it's about 1200 songs that wont show up on my iPod.

  • Editing file names on Contact Sheet created via bridge

The text is overset on thecontact sheets I just made. Four hours into it and I do not want to start over. Maybe my head isn't working, but can I (and how?) change the font size on all these easily. Hoping someone can say "Of Course.... just do this..."

Do a search and have the Find Format find the exact type size, font and leading used in the captions.
Then go to the change format and chage it there.

  • Annoying new Finder file name editing setting

This is new in Leopard and it is beginning to annoy me very much. It happens when editing file names in a sub-folder view – the one where the expand arrow is expanded.
When editing a long file name I am used to using the arrow keys (up places the insertion point at the beginning; down places it at the end; left and right move it left and right). Hold down the left arrow key to get to the middle of the text quickly and the sub-folder closes. Previous to Leopard the command key+left arrow did this, not just the arrow on it's own. This means that you either have to use to mouse to click where you want to edit, or press the left arrow key multiple.
I have the key repeat rate set to high so the insertion point moves quickly.
    Has anyone else seen this?

Yes, it's a bug. Please report it to the link below - the more the merrier:

On the bright side, at least they finally fixed Option-Right Arrow for disclosure triangles.

  • I cannot edit file titles

I cannot edit file name or relocate them without having to put in a password and its rather time consuming when im in a hurry.
I also have problems editing my Pages documents and cannot unlock the document.
A pop down window asks me to duplicate . . . i would rather just edit the existing document.
I have reinstalled Mountaion Lion since there was another bug on my desktop which reinstalling seems to have resolved.
    2 Questions to ask;
Why do I have to make duplicates in Pages when there is clearly a facility to unlock and edit document?
Why do I have to input a password everytime i want to edit a file name or move it to another location within my HD?
thanks if your read and respond : ) maybe some scripting changes needed.
    Dale

Files may become locked because other programs are accessing them.
You have to also understand the file hierarchy of Macs
    Hard drive -
    -- Users -- yourname
    -- Users -- yourname -- Desktop
Are the only places you may write to directly with an user account to your computer unless someone else has set up a parental controls account on your computer.
    -- Users -- shared
    -- Applications
Are also accessible if you have an administrative account, or you allowed yourself access to those folders when setting up your computer and setting up parental controls.
Data on CDs, DVDs are read only.
Data on USB Sticks are read only unless you undo the lock on them, or format them FAT32.
    10.6.5 and later support ExFat.
NTFS has no built-in write support.  Several utilities named Tuxera NTFS, Google's Macfuse, and Paragon Software NTFS-Mac can allow you to write to NTFS formatted disks.
If none of this appears to help, and you should be able to write the document where it stands, and no other programs are open when you try it, then go to Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility, select First Aid, and then Repair Permissions.
Usually that resolves most write issues.

  • Open Dialog Box: full file name is not displayed in edit window under Windows 7

Only the last 16 characters of a file name are displayed in the edit window of a Common dialog box under Windows 7. What is the fix to this problem? I am coding in C/C++ and my compiler is Visual Studio 2005.

    Hi warengharding624,
Based on your description, your issue is related about C/C++, since this forum is discussing about Windows Forms Controls, and I will move this thread to C++ forum.
In addition,Could you share us what the type of your project is?

  • Framemaker uses $filename for short file name, can we edit this to change appearance? We do not want the short file name of long filename to include the .fm extension can this be removed or modified to make this happen?

Framemaker uses <$filename> for short file name, can we edit this to change appearance? We do not want the short file name of long filename to include the .fm extension can this be removed or modified to make this happen? In compiling our books it would be helpful to not have this extension appear as it then requires us to create extra files without them.

  • Photo file names not seen in PSE 12 editor while editing

How can I see the file name of a photo while editing in Photoshop Element 12?

Thanks for the answer.  However the name shows only when in the Expert mode not the Quick or Guided modes.
I note that in the Expert mode only the relative size of the image on screen is shown as a percent in the lower right corner.  That is where I am used to see that in the PSE 9.

  • How can I edit the file name of the home page?

How can I edit the file name of the home page?
    Gr Ammani

I have a similar issue with regards to the filename...
When I navigate to my website, it doesnt work unless I actually type the filename at the end of it. Example: type in "www.whitelion.com" (this is my real domain name) and it doesnt work. When I type in "www.whitelion.com/index.html" then it works.
This is obviously inconvenient because my clients will never know to add the filename to the end of the site.
Is there any setting or way to get the page to appear by just typing the original domain name without adding the extension?
    Thanks,

  • I want the actual file name of my song to be edited through itunes

    Hello to all,
I have spent a significant time of my life to keep my music folder very well organized. Then after a few years, I discovered itunes and I started to organizing and tagging my music files through itunes. Everything works well with no problems....
    Now, here is the thing.
I know that itunes works with mp3 tagging or something similar (not an expert). So, if I copy the songs of an itunes playlist to my friends (dropbox, usb drive etc) and they are not using itunes, then the file names of the songs included in the playlist is totally crap. If they open it in itunes or other similar software is pitch perfect. But most of them they go through: "open folder"/"read file name"/"play song". So they cannot even find the songs they want....
So, is there a magic way (i.e. not manual) that the actual file names of my songs will be edited by itunes according to my so lovely and beautiful (lol) itunes tag?
Any help would be more than welcomed and even celebrated as well!
    Cheers
    BG

iTunes reorganizes files stored inside the iTunes Media folder to reflect changes to tags if the advanced preference "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" is selected. If for some reason it has failed to do this turning the preference off, and then back on again normally resolves things, although iTunes won't make minor case corrections, e.g. The beatles to The Beatles. iTunes uses the structure <Artist>\<Album>\[D ]## <Name>.<Ext>
If the files are stored outside the media folder, or that preferences is turned off, then the file & folder names are left alone when you edit the tags. Consolidating the library will bring in copies in the standard format.
However, unless we are talking about songs you have personally composed and recorded, you have no right to give copies of your songs to your friends, they should buy their own copies (or you could buy them for them).
