Editing filenames slow/tricky and app submenus slow to pop up

Before anyone says anything - i have had a lot of probs with Adobe CS5 update and Snow Leopard update so i scratched and started again with a blank hard drive, clean installs and updates. All up to date and nothing extra running other than Growl which seems to be integral these days.
ISSUE 1:- In Finder, i sometimes want to rename a file or folder. If i don't wait several seconds from first click to second click to position the edit point i open the file or folder (without fail). I'm sure it used to be you could click and hold on a filename and the click point was the edit point and away you edited the filename. No longer seems to be.
ISSUE 2:- When you do get to edit the file/folder name, the edit point is very difficult to pin down. The OS seems to select whole words rather than inserting the cursor at the click. This is an annoying Microsoft feature that until now i'd not noticed with Apple.
Can issues 1 & 2 behaviours be changed in Snow Leopard? I cannot find anything, and changing double click prefs on the mouse seem to make no diffence.
ISSUE 3:- I believe this may be a similar thing to above, in apps (eg Illustrator / Photoshop) many tools are nested in a submenu of the tool menu. So you have to click, hold and wait for the submenu to appear. Since CS5 or Snow Leopard or both, these submenus can take 2 or 3 seconds to appear each time. This is kinda irritating. What happened to instance responsiveness to these kinds of things?
Any help welcome. Remember i have clean installed and updated all software, and searched all over forums but can't seem to find the answers. Maybe this is a function of the Mac OS. If it is, please can i have my quick selection back please!

I've been using Macs for 2 decades
Old habits are hard to break....I was wondering why you were doing a click-and-hold on menus, because that was standard (and required) Mac OS behavior way waaaayyyyy back, before OS X. You don't have to click and hold at all any more. Just click and release once on any menu item and the contents drop down. You can even move from menu item to menu item, getting each one to drop down as you mouse over it, and different items to be selected when you mouse down. When the mouse selects a sub-menu item, the choices should immediately be available. Once you select something you then click a second time to activate your selection. The "old timey" method of click-hold-release to activate still works of course, but you might try the new method in Adobe and see if that works better.
I don't have CS5, but I do have Elements 8, and its menus and sub-menus are all instantaneous, using either method of selecting menu items. You might try creating a test account, if you don't already have one, and see how things behave there. Of course, Adobe is notorious for not getting permissions right and having things not work quite correctly in accounts other than the admin account that installed it... so using a test account doesn't always work to troubleshoot Adobe issues. You might try the Adobe forums and see if anyone else is having your issue.

  • Sharepoint 2013 - Can I use Visual Studio 2012 express edition for web-parts and app parts?

I am new to sharepoint 2013. I want to develop the app and web parts using visual studio 2012 express edition. Can I use vs 2012 express edtion to create app and web parts for sharepoint 2013?

    Unfortunately no, check this post:
    http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/52338/sharepoint2013-development-with-vs2012-express
To build SharePoint 2013 webparts/apps you will need the 'Microsoft Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2012', which do not come as part of Visual Studio.  The tools require Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate, Premium, or Professional.
The tools and prerequisites can be found here:

  • IOS8 Slow Performance, Keyboard Bugs and App Crashes on iPhone 5

Since updating my iPhone 5 to iOS8, performance has slowed considerably: Apps take longer to launch and interface animation stutters.
When turning the phone on and off, the screen goes black - I have to keep pressing the on/off sleep/wake switch to get the screen to illuminate.
Typing this in landscape on my iPhone 5 (using the standard keyboard - I've not tried installing any third party keyboards yet) is taking ages: There are now only two lines of text visible due to the word-suggestion feature. I've just noticed as I type this that the text display isn't automatically scrolling, so unless I manually scroll down the window, I can't see what I'm typing!
Positioning the magnifying glass is challenging - its position is not following my finger! The behaviour of the backspace is also unpredictable . . . and I am now typing this on my Mac because Safari crashed mid-sentene ! (Thank goodness this site auto-saves - I didn't have to start again when I logged into my Mac!)
I like all the new iOS8 features (although the key feature for me - the health app - is not linking to any fitness apps yet due to an Apple-acknowledged bug). But the performance hit, bugs and app crashing created by the iOS8 upgrade means I now want to return to iOS7.
I'm surprised at these issues because, unlike previous iOS releases, IOS 8 was in public beta for a few months, as well as being with developers since WWDC.
If Apple are going to move iOS deeper into the enterprise (with IBM for example) its needs to prioritise stability - even if it means moving from an annual upgrade cycle. Apple hasn't managed this with Mac OS - the last three Mac OS updates have not been usable in an enterprise/Pro App environment until around 9 months after their release.

ios8 for my iphone 5 = crashes, hot phone, restarts, dropped calls, funny looking fuzzy 'senior picture screen' with frost on the perimeter.....  Just opening 'message' for texts takes 3-4 seconds to load, where previously, it was milliseconds latency speeds.  I think they pressed this OS beyond the reasonable functional limit of the hardware (phones), especially with the older phones and/or phones with less memory.
It's like an athlete on steroids, the bones can't handle the force of the muscles and something is gonna BREAK!
When did we ever come to think that $400 phones would become 2-4 year disposable items and revere at the glory of it all!  And whether we realize it or not, it's being shoved down our throats.
Just fix the OS please so my phone can work for me as it has in the past.
For the $$ being paid out, we shouldn't have to reset, restart, restore......

Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    Then restart your iPad.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, then swipe the slider to power off.
Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Downgrading is not an option for an iOS device.

  • Multicam, the more edits the slower it gets

Hi! I have a problem again. I want to do a multicam edit with 2 clips AVCHD, the show is about one hour. AVCHD is no problem it's a i5, 6GB Ram, working smoothly normally.
Now I started editing in multicam monitor and switching the cams on the fly. After a few edits the system got more and more laggy. After a while PR needed about 2-3 seconds to switch cams after pressing the keys.
So I stopped and started from the same point again, but the system kept beeing laggy. After I did the whole show - and it wasn't possible to edit at the right positions, I wanted to shorten the whole show. Now it takes about 10 seconds for the system to make the cut. The colorful Donut appears and it's taking ages to go on and on...
So it seems the more edits (cuts) there are in the timeline, the slower PR gets. What the f.... I've never had a problem like this before with AVID. There it doesn't matter how many edits you have in a project.
What can I do. It's just a 60 Minutes show! What about 90 Minutes etc...
    Please help!
    ATB
    Andreas

This 'may' be your machine, but all of us who use multicam in CS4 have the same issue, so I doubt it's 'just your machine'.
Multicam works great until (my experiences) you reach in the neighborhood of 30-50 "cuts", then it slows down (by slow down I mean the multicam monitor changing from cam to cam delays more and more) until it gets to the point that the user feels/believes the multicam isn't functioning.  That "visual feed back" the user gets from seeing the multicam monitor change is (my opinion) a necessity to make the 'multicam feature' usable.  In actuality, the multicam cuts are being recorded by CS4, and if you play back your timeline, you'll see the cuts you made, but not having that visual feedback as you are creating the cuts is unnerving to say the lease.
Apparently, Adobe didn't do anything to address this in CS4 updates but I SINCERELY HOPE this will be corrected in CS5.   I still have a copy of CS2 on my machine and if I'm going to have to do a lot of cuts in a multicam environment, I resort to using CS2 for my multicam work, then export that to an .AVI and import that .AVI into CS4 as a new file.  It's a cumbersome work-around I know....  BTW: multicam worked great in CS2 and CS3, only 'not working so great' in CS4....so, again I doubt that it's really your computer.

On the iPhone 5s, performing any edit on a black and white photo will render a strong purple tone. This occurs in any app under the current iOS. Sadly, every photo must then be re-edited to restore the original black and white. If others have experienced similar troubles, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone, I'm the one from the example above posted by @frankensinatra and I can confirm having the same problem.
But I want to add something. The problem is not only related to black and white but to every picture, and it can be worse or not depending on the range of colors involved. Apparently, there is a shift between some RGB value that is going to remove some green producing a magenta look.
I've started contacting some developer about this problem and some of them is trying to understand what's going on.
In my case, the problem came up when I bought the new iPad mini Retina. I didn't have this problem with the previous iPad mini. Same OS for both devices.
The photo you see in the link above is a perfect example of what happens just going from one app to another and saving to the camera roll. In that case, the situation doesn't change if I send that picture from within the app by email, or to another app using the "open in..." feature. It keeps being purple. And the problem can be reproduced all the time.
Have some of you noticed the same?

  • My mac book pro runs so slow and little round rainbow keep popping up

My mac book pro runs very slow and little round rainbow keeps popping up

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

You need to delete and redownload them to do that. This may require repurchasing paid ones.

  • Flash Builder mxml editing painfully slow

I'm running Flash Builder on a Windows Vista machine.  I created a default application project and created a new component.  I started editing that new component in the MXML editor, opened the help window to look up some stuff, when back to edit and it freezes up for about 10 seconds.  I edited a little more and then it freezes up again for 10 seconds.  I looked at the FB process footprint (gumbo.exe) and its 500Megs, 5 times larger than anything else including Photoshop. I was also running Flex Builder 3 at the same time.  Is there some known issues...googling I found a similar complaint for Mac.

This is a known, intermittent issue. Please see http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FB-19935.

  • Best way to put system and apps (home directory?) on new SSD?

I just installed a new 115 GB SSD in slot 2 of my MacPro (early 2008). I have not initialized yet.  I want to make that my Boot Drive.  I have Carbon Cloner and have cloned my entire old HD onto an external so far.  What is the best way to get my system and apps onto the SSD. I'm guessing Carbon Cloner will let me clone parts of my HD and not make me clone all of it but I don't yet know how to do that.  Do I just clone my apps folder and then my system folder one at a time?   What do I do with the Library? I cannot clone my entire HD onto the SSD first because it will not fit and I do not want my data on there anyway.  I have read that I should also put my home directory on the boot but this is now confusing me.  I plan on partioning the erased HD into fast and slow, then putting my User folder from the external back on there.  I am the only one using the computer so I do not have issues with Users and all my apps are in the main hard drive app folder but I have noticed that I have things in both my Library folders (main HD and my home).  Should I put all items in one of them, main or home? before I do this?  I never understood why I have items in both folders since I am the only user and all the apps are on main. Thanks.
