Editing files from canon HF M 40

I am considering purchasing the Canon Vixia HF M40 but am concerned how to work with the files. Will imovie 9 recognize the camera and be able to download the files and if so do I need to convert them and which converter is best?
Thanks

I don't know, so I'm hoping other long time contributors to the iMovie Discussion Group will chime in.
Apple's database of known working cameras for iMovie '11 is listed here:
http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US
There are older Vixia models listed there, which would lead me to say that most likely your camera might work with iMovie '11. Whether or not you can import the AVCHD format into iMovie 09, is the most important thing to find out right now. AVCHD can be converted with a software program likely into a form that iMovie 09 can understand, but I don't know if it will import directly into iMovie 09. Voltaic HD is one utility I have seen mentioned before to do conversions of AVCHD.

Why cant I edit My raw files from Canon 6D.

It is difficult to know why because we don't know what version is your PSE and what is your operating system.
That aside, if your camera is fairly new then first try to update your software by going to:
    Help >> Updates
If this doesn't solve then it may be that your camera is not supported by your PSE (mainly 10 and before) and so you may need to use DNG conversion utility.  The latest version is 8.1 but unpaid MVPs here will tell you more about it.

  • My raw files from Canon T5i isn't being recognized?

    I am getting this message:
PS could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the install version of Camera Raw.
Presently I have Photoshop 5.1 and won't read my RAW files from Canon T5i, although read my earlier Canon Rebel. Do I need to update? Which will bum me out as I just spent a lot of money for the new camera. Is there a work around to getting at my RAW files? Thanks for all your support and suggestions.

The T5i was first supported in Camera Raw 7.4 which is only supported in CS6 and later. There is no version of Camera Raw for CS5.x which will read T5i Raw files.
    Your options:
    Pay to upgrade to CS6
    Buy Photoshop Elements 13
Join the Cloud and pay the monthly fee
Free option: download the free Adobe  DNG converter, convert all T5i Raw files to DNG format then edit the DNGs in CS5.1

  • Photoshop CS5.1 won't read raw files from Canon EOS M

Photoshop cs5.1 won't read raw files from canon eosM, what to do?

The EOS M requires at least Camera Raw 7.2 but Raw 7.2 is only compatible with CS6 or higher (CS5 is only compatible up to Raw 6.7)

To open and edit Raw files, either upgrade to CS6 or join the Cloud and get the CC version.
Alternatively convert the Raw files from the EOS M to DNGs using the free DNG converter then edit the DNGs in CS5.1

You could try using the DNG converter 8.7 on Windows vista:

  • Aperture 3.0 not importing RAW files from Canon T1i

I have recently upgraded to Aperture 3.0. I shoot with Canon T1i in RAW+JPG file size. When importing files from Canon T1i for the first time to Aperture 3.0, I found that all files imported as jpg not RAW. How do I get the RAW files? Help!!!
    Anjali

It does support Canon T1i RAW mode. In the "Import Settings", there's a section for "RAW+JPEG Pairs". If you don't see this, click the "Import Settings" pulldown menu and select it.
In the "RAW+JPEG Pairs" section, there's a pulldown menu to allow you to select "Both (RAW as Master)"
It'll use the JPEG as the "Preview" image, but it will use the RAW as the master for all adjustments you want to perform.
Prior to the import, you should see both the JPEG and RAW (.CR2) files. AFTER the import, you should only see the RAW in your project (it has the JPEG... but it wont normally display it because it knows the RAW is the master.) After the import, select any photo in your project, then click the "metadata" tab on the left. At the top it should give you the camera, lens, exposure info, etc. and you should see the "RAW" icon.

  • When will Elements11 support CR2 files from Canon 70D  ? Or is an upgrade necessary ?

As it is now RAW files from Canon 70D is not recognized by Elements 11. And Adobe don't ship any upgrade, only to Lightroom and PCC/Bridge. Is there a workaround ?

PSE 11 will not be upgraded to support this camera. You need either:
    Purchase PSE12 or PSE13 ... or ...
Download and install and use the free Adobe DNG Converter version 8.2 or later, convert your RAWs to DNG and then import the DNGs into PSE 11

  • Cannot import video file from Canon Vixia hfs10 to imovie'11.

Hi this is my first post on this site.
I am having trouble trying to import video files from Canon Vixia hfs10 to imovie'11. The computer does not even recognize this camcorder. When I do a PC connection, iphoto comes up, but all it tells me to import are the pictures that I have taken.
No matter what I do, I cannot find the folder for my camcorder in the device section in the finder.
When I try to import it on imovie, I only get an option for facetime camera and not my vixia.

  • Lightroom 4.  dose not handle RAW files from canon 5D MK 111.

I have purchased lightroom 4. It dose not handle RAW files from canon 5D MK 111.
I have downloaded and ran the suggested file from Adobe, but still no luck.
    Anyone have the answer?

The initial release of Lightroom 4 doesn't handle the 5d mk 3 files because of when the camera was released.  You can either wait for the 4.1 release, or you can download the 4.1 Release Candidate 2 at http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom4-1/.
Technically you can also download Adobe's DNG converter, but that just adds another program to the situation.

  • Does "RAW files from Canon digital cameras cannot be downloaded" MATTER??

Need to buy new camera to use with my G5 and iPHoto 5. I desire (1) affordability, (2) more optical zoom than what I've had in past (want to move from 4x to 6x), and (3) compatible with my G5.
I've had 2 canon powershost (my last, the 570, but a kid dropped it). Easy to use. So maybe simliar, or something nicer.
Been studying the Canon web site about their various cameras. For the above reasons I like thePowerShot SX100 IS, about $240. 6x optical zoom.
HOWEVER, in the MAC OSX compatibility section at Canon it has this quote:
    * Mac OS X 10.1 and newer come with Image Capture drivers that support most of Canon's digital cameras with USB interfaces. When a compatible camera is connected to a compatible Mac computer running OS X 10.1 and newer, the computer detects the camera and automatically launches Image Capture. This Apple program allows JPEG images in the camera to be downloaded to the Macintosh. NOTE: RAW files from Canon digital cameras cannot be downloaded in OS X via Image Capture. We suggest the use of File Viewer Utility or an external card reader. Also, movie files shot with PowerShot cameras cannot be downloaded in OS X via Image Capture or iPhoto. We suggest the use of ImageBrowser or an external card reader.
Additionally, Image Capture can access JPEG images directly from a CompactFlash card using an OS X-compatible card reader or using a PC Card Adapter in the PC Card slot of an Apple PowerBook.**
This line caught me confused: *RAW files from Canon digital cameras cannot be downloaded*
In the past, I just plugged in the Canon Camera, and iPhoto 5 opened, and I h appily downloaded the picts and off and away I was.
Will this still happen??? And if I'm not getting the "RAW" picts (whatever that is), but just the JPEGS I'm used to, am I not getting "all" the picts, or the best that my camera could be given me for eventually printing?
    Am I worrying about nothing?
Finally, any camera suggestions? Under $300 , super picts, 5-10x zoom, and friendly with my Mac
    Thanks
    JON

You know, because you ask the question, I'll guess that it won't really matter to you...
Every camera shoots RAW - that's the total information that the sensor on the camera sees, but mid- and lower end cameras process this RAW data into an easy to use format such as jpegs.
Many (but not all) Pros demand that the camera provide all the data to the computer, so that the photographer can process the images him/her self. For most casual and family users this is not an issue. For the serious hobbyist and the Pro it might well be.
For more on Raw have a look at this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rawimageformat
Btw, later versions of iPhoto do work with Some Raw formats.
    As to cameras:
I used a Canon S2 IS for a couple of years and found it really good. There's and S3 and an S5 now too. Currently I'm using a Panasonic FZ8. I really like it.

  • Reading raw files from Canon 70D

I have Photoshop Elements 11 and just got a Canon 70D. How can I get the program to read the raw files?

    Jo_vdh wrote:
if I understand correctly, the only way to open the CR2 files from canon 70D is upgrade to PSE12.
No. Adobe offer the free DNG converter that will convert those CR2 files to Adobe's DNG RAW format that can be opened in PSE11, or pretty much any version of PSE going back five or more years.
    Jo_vdh wrote:
    it's already kind of worthless.
The Organizer and the Editor still do everything they did when you bought the product and Adobe provide a continuing solution to enable RAW processing in older versions of the software so I don't see how it has suddenly become worthless?
And noting that you bought it the month after PSE12 was released I hope you got it heavily discounted.
