Editing from a pile of.dpx files

Hello!
I'd like to work my way from a disk full of .dpx files to being able to cut some sequences.
Its not going to go back to film at the moment but they're beautiful pictures and I'd like to work at highest quality possible.
I have at my disposal:
pokey MacPro, some SATA Raid storage, and an AJA Io HD
all three of which are slightly beyond my ken.
Would anyone be willing to point me to some good resources, or offer me some stepping stones for a work flow?
Thanks a bundle
Tall Jim

All I want to do is make auto playing DVD's from a video file or files. Is there a drag-and-drop program that can do this?
Have you tried... iDVD?
You can burn a OneStep DVD from a movie on your hard disk, skipping the creative process involved in creating menus, modifying themes, and so on. When you insert the burned disc into a DVD player or a computer, the disc plays automatically.
From the iDVD Help:
To burn a OneStep DVD from a movie on your hard disk:
With iDVD open, choose File > “OneStep DVD from Movie.”
Locate the movie you want to add in the dialog that opens, then click Import.
Insert a blank DVD disc into your computer’s SuperDrive or an external drive when you are prompted to do so.
There's more about OneStep iDVD in the Help.

  • Create EDL with DPX files trouble

    Hi everyone.
I have a problem exporting edls from a sequence containing dpx file formats.
The exported edl writes the dpx sequences as BL (blacks).
    for example
    001 BL V C 00:00:00:00 00:00:04:05 01:00:00:00 01:00:04:05
    *FROM CLIP NAME: 01_0000.DPX
FINAL CUT POR REEL: REPLACE BY:
    GlueTools installed.
Is it possible to export and EDL from Final Cut that contains DPX image sequences?
    thanks for answers!!!!!

The missing text issue is a problem that was fixed last year through a Microsoft Hotfix. (it affects other apps besides FM, too).

  • Color to FCP contrast shift (DPX files only...)

I have a Color sequence which has a mix of raw .R3D files from the RED, and DPX files from VFX work... When I grade, and then send the sequence to FCP, the files which started out as .r3d files, have correct color contrast; however, the clips that are DPX files, seem to have their black levels raised... I am rendering to proRes 4444 quicktime files for everything, and this color-shift is consistent for every clip that originated as DPX files.
In Color the waveforms and scopes of the DPX sequences, all read correctly (blacks are at 0, and whites at 100), but when brought into FCP, the contrast seems off, and this is confirmed by the scopes in FCP (black levels are consistently raised to around 10 or so...).
Trying to sort it out, and will post any solutions I can come up with, but any thoughts in the mean time would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    -Brian

Thanks for your response JP, however I am not quite sure that it is quite what I need (unless I am misunderstanding you...). I can't adjust the scaling on export, because I am not rendering to DPX, but rather to ProRes 444 (I could adjust each clip on import, but that would render the LUT and current corrections pretty much useless....). Let me try to explain a bit further...
We are importing the DPX sequences (95-685 Log) as Linear (0-1023), and then using an LUT to correct for the LOG space during CC. For the time being we are rendering with the LUT in place because we are outputting to video (the film-out will come later....). The workflow for the RED footage is pretty much the same (gamma settings in the RED tab are set to PDLog685, and the same LUT is used for CC)... Upon render (to ProRes 444), the RED footage renders correctly, with blacks at 0, however the DPX footage acquires some sort of contrast shift which puts the blacks at around 5-10 IRE...
For the time being we can apply a quick 3wayCC back in FCP and adjust the black levels for the affected clips back to where they should be, but it would be really nice to know/understand exactly where the problem is occurring...
Sorry if I misunderstood your response, and feel free to correct me if I did. Thanks!

  • Is there a way to prevent LR from reducing size (pixels) of files transfered to Photoshop as a psd file for editing?

The subject line says it all.  I have discovered that LR reduces the size of files transferred to Photoshop for further editing when compared to the same RAW file processed in ACR in Photoshop.  For example, a psd file created by LR from a 36 MB RAW file will typically result in a 100 MB psd file.  The same RAW file processed similarly in Photoshop will result in a file around 300 MB.  This makes a huge difference when the files are converted to JPEGs for printing.  The smaller LR psd files result in JPEGs typically under 500 KB where the Photoshop JPEGs are typically around 1.5 MB.

Whew!  I didn't think this would turn into such a long discussion!.     OK - my error,  spatial data not color.  But that is loosing focus on my question.  My objective is to get the best print possible from the final JPEG file used for printing..  As previously noted, for a given RAW file w/similar adjustments but with one processed in LR and the other in PS , a print made from the larger of two resulting JPEG files, the larger JPEG file resulting from only  PS ACR processing (i.e., no LR) will result in a better print.  Elie-d appears to have answered my basic question. If LR will always pass a 103 MB file then I assume there is no way to change this size.  In case anyone is interested here is some additional info for consideration.  Both LR & PS using 8 bit mode and 240 ppi..  Procedure in LR: 1) download RAW files from camera CD; 2) make adjustments to photo;  3) using Edit in External Processor, photo transferred to PS in PSD format, 8 bit. 4) file size around 100 MB (103 MB per elie-d).  Procedure in PS:  1) download RAW file to hard drive with Nikon View2; 2) open file in PS - auto opens in ACR; 3) apply essentially the same adjustments (e.g., exposure, highlight, shadow, etc) ) as applied in LR;  4) file opened in PS editor;  5) resulting PSD file size with no further processing (i.e., no layers, etc.) is 310 MB).  The resulting JPEG file created from the LR PSD is typically less than 200 KB whereas the JPEG from the PS PSD will generally be around 1.5 MB.   As an academic question it would still be interesting to know why one gets different size PSD files from LR and PS and what, if any, affect this has on print quality.  As for now I will not use LR to process RAW files.  I prefer the larger PSD & JPEG files I get using just PS

  • Using DPX Files to Edit in Premiere Pro

How can I create an Image Sequence out of DPX Files so that I can Edit in Premiere and never have to deal again with the single DPX files?  I have seen a couple forum questions, but none that answered my specific issue.  I have DPX files (50,000 of them) that I need to edit with.  I was hoping to create a video file that would string the files together in their original size (looks like they are 2k) that I could
edit with and not have to touch the single frames separately again.

Possibly: FAQ:How do I convert my files?

  • Config Files inaccessible once Configuration edited from EM in OBIEE

    Hi All,
I logged in as weblogic user, and tried to make some changes to business intelligence > coreapplication using "Lock and Edit Configuration" option. As soon as I click "Apply Changes", all the important configuration files get changed, and surprisingly, their ownership changes to the root user. The configuration files that experience such changes are all the general and log configuration files of the all major services of business intellignece > coreapplication including NQSConfig.ini, and instanceconfig.xml.
As a result, when I try to restart all services to make sure the changes are visible, I get an error:
    Restart All - Failed.
    Restart failed with 6 errors and 0 warnings. Problems reported by: instance1:coreapplication_obis1, instance1:coreapplication_obiccs1, instance1:coreapplication_obijh1, instance1:coreapplication_obips1, ...
Now, when I recursively change the ownership of all these configuration file from the main directory, and try to restart, I succeed to get them restarted.
    So, my Question is :
Why does these configuration files change their ownership to root, in my case, when I try to make any Configuration Changes from EM?

Not what you'll want to hear probably- but the site list
    scrolls again
because the site list drop down is what has focus. It has
    focus until you
click something else. That's the GUI behavior i would expect
    instead of a
warning dialog box getting in the way.

  • Using digital editions 2.0, I cannot transfer books downloaded to digital editions from library to my nook.  Error message: failed to write destination file.

Using digital editions 2.0, I cannot transfer books downloaded to digital editions from the library to my nook.  I get an error message: failed to write destination file. At first, this happened once in a while but now every time. Help!!!

Modern kobo books should just use regular Adobe DRM and be readable on compatible ereaders that are authorized to the correct Adobe ID.
I understand older kobo book had different DRM: but I wouldn't expect those to
When Adobe DRM book information say 'no copying', that generally means no copying outside those Adobe DRM limitations.
You should be able to copy within the restrictions.  You can double-check that with the sellers (Kobo).
    Just double-checking
the pocket book is Adobe DRM compatible?
that you have authorized your pocket book with your current Adobe ID?
menu/Help/Authorize Device when plugged into ADE:  Library/Authorize Device if using the older more reliable ADE 1.7.2
If the pocket book is already authorized but to a different ID, you will need to deauthorize it first, ctrl-shift-E to ADE with device plugged in (or cmd-shift-E on Mac).
Be aware that will lose the ability to read DRM books authorized with the previous ID.

  • Export DPX files from FCP with Timecode

    Hi,
Have anyone found a way to export DPX files from FCP, and also get the timecode in the DPX header...
    Thanks for answers!!
    //P

    Your workflow is not correct.
In FCP I bring the clip to the timeline, trim, color correct it then File> Export> Using Compressor. Compressor opens up and places the clip into the Batch Window. This works fine, but when I go back to FCP, delete the clip from the timeline and place an other clip there and when I Export>Using Compressor, Compressor places the clip in a new Window title "Untitle 1" and so it goes on. As far as I understood, whenever you add a clip from the FCP it places it below the first clip so when I want to add my settings, I can add all 3 settings to all the clips. Did I missunderstand something?
You're misunderstanding a couple of different things. When you send a clip or sequence from FCP to Compressor, you cannot then apply the settings you want in Compressor then go back to FCP and delete that clip from your sequence ... Compressor is trying to reference that sequence. If you keep removing clips, then Compressor won't follow those clips ... you're essentially breaking the link between Compressor and FCP by doing this.
    Try this:
    1. Load Clip A into the Viewer, Set your In & Out points and add your Color Correction.
    2. Press Command U to Make a Subclip. This will create a separate "clip" in your bin. Rename as necessary.
    3. Repeat this process for your other 19 clips.
    4. Then Select all of your new subclips in your Browser, then File > Export > Using Compressor. This will open Compressor and add all of those subclips into the Job window.
    5. Add your appropriate Target settings and set your Destinations and revise any filenames if necessary.
    6. Click Submit.
For a good, quick overview on the basics of how and when to use Compressor, check out this video from MacBreak Weekly: http://www.pixelcorps.tv/macbreak153

  • Import DPX Files Workflow?

One of the main reasons I upgraded from PPro CS4 to CS5 was to handle DPX files.  I used FCP 7 together with Glue Tools Cineon/DPX add on to import large DPX files for editing.  However very little info is available in the various Adobe PPro CS5 help sources.  As I result I am stumbling around trying to crack the code on how to bring in 1080p 24 f DPX files.
I work with very large 1080p DPX file sets.  Eack folder holds 15,000 frames.  The frame images are 1920 by 1080 pixels. The DPX files are stored on a very large RAID set with read and write rates of 1200 MB/sec.  More than fast enough for any regular uncompressed file.  But DPX files take many minutes to import and then I can not play the 15,000 frame clip in  the source monitor, nor cam I add the clip to a sequence.   I can add one frame at a time to the sequence but that defeats the whole purpose.
Does anyone have any workflow suggestions for importing large DPX files?  Like the right presets to use etc.  Do I need to process the DPX files in After Effects or some other Production Preimere CS5 utility?
    Bill Wood

Steve - Thanks for the tip!  I was trying to Import my DPX files from the Media Browser.  The Import function there does NOT have the numbered still check box.  I had to do the Import from the Project window.  That has the numbered stills check box and other options.  It is very quick and acts more like Final Cut Pro 7 with the Glue Tools Cineon/DPX plugin does. - Bill

  • Cineon DPX Files in FCP 5?

    Hi Guys,
This is more a question to quell my curiosity. Can Final Cut Pro 5 edit Cineon DPX Files that have been telecined from film? Please forgive me for my ignorance but the knowledge will help my later on with some projects I may do in the future!
Your help would be very much appreciated!
    James

It does not. You'll have to transcode the DPX files into something Final Cut can edit natively. You'll probably want to explore an uncompressed or lossless workflow for DI, if you have the gear to handle it. See a list of supported formats here:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs.html?finalcutpro
Final Cut Studio does come with Cinema Tools, which helps manage media from film. I've never used it, so I can't really give you any specifics.
    Good Luck.
