Editing HD offline

Hi, new to HD (AVCHD, off my small Panasonic) and am slightly taken aback by how slow it is to render clips compared with miniDV (using FCP 6.0.1 on a 2.4GHz MacBook Pro). I'm doing some simple effects upon clips — rotating, flop, and rotating and flopping, to create a kaleidoscope effect, but a 1'30" clip just took an hour to render. Is this about right? Could I recompress the clips in Media Manager to a lower res, edit and apply the filters, and then output that back as a hi-res version? Sorry to ask what is no doubt a stupid question, but I fear it'll take me all year to do this otherwise.
With thanks,
J.

Here's what I did that didn't even involve using the Media Manager.
I transcoded my original clips twice - once into ProRes LT and another time into ProRes Proxy and I made sure the clips names were the same (KEY POINT).
Then I stashed the ProRes LT copies on my desktop while the ProRes Proxy clips fits nicely onto my external USB passport drive that I took with me. I did all the editing with the ProRes Proxy files. Then when I came back, I copies my new project file back to my desktop and started the project up (Make sure your Proxy files aren't available and don't just move them - have them disconnected completely). When it could not find the Proxy files I pointed it to the original footage. I had to re-render everything of course, but I could do that all in one shot.
I am sure there is a slicker more efficient way but I know that way worked.

  • ABAP IAF - Make Fields Editable in Offline Scenario

    Hello all,
    Good day!
I just want to ask if its possible to make field modifiable for the ABAP Interactive Adobe Forms (transaction SFP) in an Offline Scenario?
I ask because when I set a textfield as (user entered) during the preview section in the Livecycle Design Editor the fields can be modified. However once I use the FM to generate the print preview and save the PDF locally the field cannot be modified.
Is there a way in how to make this possible?
I hope to hear from you soon.
    Thanks and Regards

    Chad,
I just had the same issue.
I created an offline, interactive form in SFP and just called it using ABAP. The form came up and I could enter data, BUT it would not save.
The trick is to make sure you provide a valid interface mapping between a DDIC object and the interface.
Create an DDIC structure that matches your form fields, and make sure you pass it in the FM call and it's defined in the interface. Then map the fields to your form fields.
    btw, i'm using
    SFPDOCPARAMS-FILLABLE = 'X'.
    SFPDOCPARAMS-DYNAMIC = 'X'.

  • XDCAM offline-online editing

I'm trying to edit XDCAM offline, but can't really find a useable workflow. What I've tried so far is:
    1) Convert XDCAM files in Media Encoder to DV
    2) Edit DV
    3) Mark DV-Clips as offline
    4) Re-Link with XDCAM clips
The problem is the XDCAM folder-structure which makes it necessary to relink every single clip one by one, as they are hidden in subfolders.
    Any ideas??

Get a better PC so you don't need to edit offline?

  • Edit offline table problem

    hi,
I am trying to edit an offline table (from MS SQL SERVER) created with JDeveloper 10g 10.1.2 without success.
Whatever the modification I try, I have always the error message "Columns of type smallint cannot have a size specified" or "Columns of type varchar cannot have a size specified" or "Columns of type int identity cannot have a size specified"
Does anybody have an idea ?
    thanks
    phil

    Hi Phil,
This is because in 10.1.2 Oracle validation checks are being run against the Table's columns.
In 10.1.2 and 10.1.3 Preview Offline Tables were only supported against Oracle Databases.
However in 10.1.3 Production our Foreign Database support has been greatly improved so that you will be able to import from SQL Server, Informix, MySQL, DB2 and SyBase and create/edit Offline Tables against these databases using the valid datatypes for that particular database.
    Hope that helps,

  • DVCPRO HD 3 stream multiclip - computer too slow, offline edit? How?

Of all my woes trying to get this project edited, I finally figured out solutions for a few problems I was having (preventing me from starting the edit). Now, let's assume I have everything ready...
I have 3 angles, all DVCPRO HD. When I multiclip and place in timeline, keep getting dropped frames on playback.
I've tried reducing RT as low as quarter framerate and low playback quality but I still get mixed results.
Is there a way I can do an offline edit using multiclips then online the footage once my cuts are complete? How?
    Thanks!
    Oh duh - 17" Intel iMac (1st gen of Intels) 1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM, 1TB GRAID2, FCP 6.0.2

    FANTASTIC.
    Great, quick article.
    Let's give it a try...
    AAHHHH! It works! Ha!
Ok (and I know you read a thousand threads every day), as noted in another post of mine, I have the nightmare of transcoding other footage taken from different cameras (at different resolutions and different compression [both hdv, one is 720p ftg, other is 1080i])
The DVCPRO HD is native 59.94
When I recompress for offline, I get the warning dialog about framerate of preset to be used mismatching footage I've selected. The new project/sequence will be set to OfflineRT HD (Photo JPEG) 29.97 The media I'm about to recompress, again, is 59.94 The offline clips retain the 59.94 framerate.
Edit into sequence, prompt to change sequence settings to match clip settings. I edited the clip and 3 stream (!!) multiclip into the offline sequence with the sequence set to 29.97 or 59.94 I see no noticeable difference in the look of the footage. I don't have an external monitor to test with but I imagine it wouldn't make a difference.
So what's my point? Oh, uhh, yeah. So the other two "footages"...Before I begin the edit, what should they be transcoded to? My guess:
-Transcode HDV footage to DVCPRO HD 720p60 in Compressor
    -Results in 59.94
-Put the entire "online" media into master project
-Offline all footage for realtime project
    -Edit offline in 59.94 timeline
-Did I mention the purpose of transcoding to match DVCPRO HD is so I can multiclip?
    -Complete edit in offline project
    -Online it.
    A few notes...
-I don't have HDV to test w...oops, wait, I do. And, how convenient, it's 1080i! Nonetheless, I just did the Compress routine with some SD footage, looked like hairy sh...you know. But hey, that's what you'd expect. Mainly, you can see atrocious field separation especially on motion. Either way...
Just converted the 1080i ftg to DVCPRO HD and from master to transcode, they look very similar. There is a SLIGHT blur on the transcoded ftg but it will suffice (it'll have to)
-I offlined the transcoded 1080i-720p, looks like garbage but who cares? It's visible and plays back RT! Errr...when it's on its own in the timeline. Multiclip'd this ftg with 2 other DVCPRO HD offlined and, once in timeline, multiclip isn't playing back at all. Canvas shows the video, viewer doesn't. Each time playhead is stopped, viewer updates with current frames of each multiclip element. Yes, sync is set to open.
Also, canvas doesn't update when cut to alternate angle, continues showing the previous footage AND IT DOES register the cuts but canvas doesn't update. UGH.
-Restarting FCP. That didn't do it. The RT popup also doesn't give an option for multiclip playback. So...ahhh sugar. Found it.
-The sequence needed to be set to 29.97, not 59.94
-Now the question is, how will this affect the online? What will I online back to? Huuuuuhhhhh.....
Well, I did it anyway and set it all back how it was, the sequence framerate is 29.97 - Nothing looks off or weird after a render. HOWEVER...
-Does this mean I am doing it right?? Should the online be 59.94?
OK, I think I've babbled enough. Very close!!! Much closer than before, very helpful, thank you!

  • Cannot Edit or Create Offline Address Books

I am not able to edit (change versions, edit distribution methods, edit distribution points, etc.) the existing offline address book. I am also not able to create a new offline address book.
In the EMC is see this:
I am a member of the organization management group, which is required to manage address books. The EMS is no help either. I am missing the set-offlineaddressbook command. Error indicates that the term 'set-offlineaddressbook' is not recognized as the name
    of a cmdlet.
I took over this installation of Exchange in September 2014. In October 2014, the two existing servers became unstable and I had to rebuild a new Exchange server and migrate the email services (mailbox, CAS, etc.) to the new Exchange Server. Previous
Exchange servers were a migration from Exchange 2003.
Old 2010 servers were running SP3 RU7 (they started exhibiting stability problems after they were upgraded to RU7. Runaway iis processes, 100% CPU utilization and memory utilization).
New 2010 server is running SP3.
    Thank you,
    David

The reason why I am trying to edit the offline address book is the distribution point currently points to one of the old exchange servers I need to retire.
A new issue has surfaced as well. The distribution method in my autoconfiguration for my outlook clients has changed to public folder. Which is not supported by Outlook 2013.

  • Specs for editing on MacBook Pro.

Just got CS6. My old MacBook isn't up to the task of editing HD with it. (I used to use Final Cut Pro 6 with little problem). I'm considering getting a new MacBook.
Anybody else editing on a MacBook? What do I need to make it run smoothly, and not have to render all the time. (Edting on a desktop isn't an option at the moment).

    Hi,
If you want a solution that can get the job done, but not an extreme pro level, you could try proxy editing/offline editing.
(Pasted from another reply I made to another similar topic.)
I keep checking out these forums from time to time and there has been a rapidly rising trend for people asking more and more about editing on laptops. I myself posted in the past quite a bit since I also needed a laptop. The very fact that they are considering laptops for editing and not going for more powerful AND cheaper desktop alternatives means that they need systems that are not going to be used for very heavy duty editing and for general usage as well, and a laptop is ideal due to comfort using it for general computing.
I have also personally met and seen people who have configured systems with nVidia non-supported cards WITHOUT the hack and are more than happy not knowing whats going on and that their card has never really been used by premiere without the file modification.
However, even RED4k footage can be (theoretically) edited EFFECTIVELY on a minimum requirement PC if the experts here start recommending people how to do proxy/offline edits. Even for the extremely non-technical folks, there are youtube links with easy to understand directions on how to do that.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4290664?tstart=0
    http://www.homedvd.ca/2010/12/19/offline-hd-proxy-editing-at-work/
    http://helpx.adobe.com/speedgrade/using/proxy-files.html
I will post links later as do not have access to youtube now, or anyone can simply search for 'proxy edit' or 'offline edit' on youtube.
People with even terrible systems with 1 hdd and 4 gigs ram can merrily hack away at footage without much worries. Yes, there will be a few additional steps and time required, but they can still pull off something acceptable this way.
Another thing, there are caddys on ebay for $10 that swap out the optical drives of the laptops with an internal enclosure which allows another harddisk to be added. I am using this myself on a lenovo W520 and have 2 7200 RPM harddrives. I can even add in a 3rd MSATA SSD drive as this laptop allows that (you can even order one from lenovo with RAID already installed and 2 drives).
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=w520+cadd y&_sacat=0&_from=R40
Therefore, yes, I do believe that it is possible to edit just about anything (save very high bitrate footage that needs to be done quickly) on just about anything (if the transcoding time and disk space are available).
I once again wish to clarify that the above is geared towards non-professionaly like myself (or even for professionals having a really bad day) but this technique can become even more effective if intel's Quicksync transcoding engine is used, which is the fastest at video transcoding at this time. (have not checked this out myself yet)
I hope this was helpful. I would be more than happy for any criticism and advice from the experts here because I learnt a lot through them and hope to learn more.
    Cheers.

  • Multi camera project, Online/Offline. Major issues reconnect/re-digitize

Ok gang I got brain bender.
3 camera show, Multi camera project shot Digi-beta. Brought the tapes (3@90min) in low res (dv50) and now I need up-res the files or as apple would call it “online/offline”
According to the book this can be done a few diffrent ways. I have explored these ways and I’m failing...very very badly.
    Attempt #1.
    - took time line into media manager made the sequence “offline” save the project to new folder in drive with new settings (10-bit). All looks good till you try to recapture at 10-bit. Clip names get changes and numerical extensions apple put on during “make new clip” don’t match. In short I have a show that wont go. FCP wants to digitize everything
    Attempt #2
    - took time line into media manager made the sequence “offline” Selected the clips batches of clips and then re-digitaized. Again clips don’t match and FCP wants to digitize everything.
This is where I need your help. What can I do to make this process work? Below are my next moves...but before I spend another 18 hours in a bay I want to make sure I get some other input.
    Option 1)
Encode all the tapes in 10-bit, Try to reconnect. I would like to stay away from this because the space needed for 10-bit is out of this world and I do have other projects. Again I’m looking for that secret 1,2,3 to making clips only re-digitizing.
    Option 2)
try some other method I haven't tried yet. ( this is the one I’m hoping for)
Thanks for your time an I hope it hear from you ASAP as I’m dying over here. Multi-clip with online/offline it’s exactly in the index in the FCP user guide. If any one has some posting or web pages I could book make for future that would be a big help.
Thank you all for your time in advance
    Jeff

I must playback in Premiere the 4 video streams in real time
Good luck with that.  Many folks have trouble with even one stream.
edit those offline low res copies to get my edit decision list
I'm not sure offline editing with AVCHD will be possible because of the folder structure.  You may not be able to 'replace' the lower res copies with AVCHD.
My output format is Flash F4V 640x360 px square pixels for Internet playback.
Oh, man.  Shooting HD of any flavor is just overkill that adds unnecessary work to the process.  Have your client shoot in DV.

  • LR5 Smart Preview Portability Question : Can files be edited remotely?

I understand how Smart Previews work. What I'm unsure of is...will we be able to edit these files remotely, separate from the host computer? For example, I'm an image editor and I live 500 miles away from the photographer that I work for. Can they (the photographer) download the images after shooting, create Smart Previews then send me the 'Smart Preview' folder of images, I edited them on my own computer then return the Smart Previews back to them fully edited?

You don't actually edit smart preview files. Meaning: you edit the photos in the catalog, it's just if they have a smart preview they don't need to be online. In other words, the smart previews are tied to the catalog, and exist in it's bowels - edits are never stored in them, and you can't detach them from the catalog and do things with them, like send them to somebody. If you edit an offline photo by way of it's smart preview, the edits are stored in the catalog and/or the xmp of the photo, just like if you'd edited the actual photo.
So what your photographer would have to do is send you a catalog which includes smart previews, and you would return an edited catalog to them (without the smart previews), to import .
    eh?

  • Multi-camera AVCHD editing workflow in Premiere CS4

I have a client project that has me wondering what workflow to use and I someone on this forum probably has the expertise to know the right solution. My requirements...
    1. Client is recording a scene using 4 cameras at once, like a live TV show is shot, all AVCHD footage, 1920x1080px 17mbs, square pixels.
    2. I must playback in Premiere the 4 video streams in real time and choose one camera to output, like a director would switch a live TV show. So, all 4 streams are playing in Premiere's multiple-camera editing windows. Each show I'm editing is about 1 hour long. The advantage of multi-camera editing of course is I can play all 4 cameras at once and live switch between them in Premiere to arrive at a 1 hour show in 1 hour of editing time.
    3. Until I can upgrade my hardware that can possibly handle 4 streams of AVCHD, I'm stuck needing a workflow to convert the original AVCHD to some  lowres format, edit those offline low res copies to get my edit decision list, and then reconnect the online HDV AVCHD clips to export through Media Encoder for a final production. My output format is Flash F4V 640x360 px square pixels for Internet playback.
    4. Hardware: I'm running Windows 7 RC using CS4 Premiere 4.1, 4gb RAM, 2.4ghz dual-core processor with 64mb Intel turbo boost on a notebook PC. I do have 4 hard drives to hold each camera's footage on its own drive, and a fifth drive to ouput the edited version to, in addition to a drive to hold my OS and Premiere. The external drives are connected via eSATA to the notebook.
Question 1: what do you suggest as the lowres format I should convert my AVCHD footage to for multi-camera playback/editing in Premiere?
Question 2: do you think it's even possible to buy a desktop PC that can handle playback of 4 multicam AVCHD native format files in Premiere in real time? I'm concerned this may be too much for even the most powerful systems, and I would need to resort to editing lowres footage even with the most powerful desktop. As you know, decompressing one or two AVCHD streams is taxing to a PC so 4 at once is a challenge.
Question 3: an alternative workflow would be to feed live video out of the HDMI connectors on the cameras into four HDMI capture cards (Intensity Blackmagic) and capture uncompressed HDV bypassing AVCHD compression altogether, but the disk space required would be substantial. Does this make sense? I've even considered feeding those 4 HDMI feeds into a video switcher between the cameras and PCs but the cheapest solution I can find that can provide genlock (frame sync) between the 4 cameras for clean glitch-free switching is quite expensive, thousands of dollars invested.

I must playback in Premiere the 4 video streams in real time
Good luck with that.  Many folks have trouble with even one stream.

  • Editing large stills in HD

I need to edit a sequence with dramatic pans and zooms of stills that need to be in DVC Pro HD 1080i 60. This means that my images have to be very large in order to not have a pixelated look when closely zoomed in on. No worries there, got the big tiff files.
The problem is while editing in FCP 5, even with a super fast SATA II harddrive connection, moving these massive images, and making transitions and putting filters on the images lags drastically because there so big, though they need to be in order to get those great zooms, pans and so on in HD.
Is there a way to edit these large stills in a smaller project file, or offline, with smaller image sizes, and then convert it to a larger project with the larger images? Any ideas? Thanks,
    -Pat

Ok - I'll admit I've never had to use an edl - but that's likely to be your sol'n to this - staying in fcp.
Save out your stills in dv size - make a new dv proj (16:9, I guess just for appearance sake) work in dv & get everything the way you want, filters etc; - and I'll have to let someone else lead you thru' the next bit.
But as I understand it you export out your edl (or is xml the way to go ? dunno) then bring that into your hurky big project. The manual will have this covered I'm sure. never read that bit ....
edit: ah here you go to start.
    vol 4 page 54 on
    Offline/Online Editing Workflows
The offline/online editing process in Final Cut Pro consists of the following steps:
Step 1: Set up and capture media at low resolution
You can log and capture your footage directly to low-resolution, offline-quality media files. Alternatively, you can log and capture your footage at full resolution, and then use the Media Manager to create low-resolution media files for offline editing. The latter method is useful if you want to have both full-resolution and low-resolution media for two different systems simultaneously.
Step 2: Edit with offline-quality (low-resolution) media files
You edit just as you would with any other footage. Because you are using low- resolution footage, you can fit much more footage on your hard disk, and use a portable PowerBook editing system.
Step 3: Create a sequence for recapturing media at full resolution
When you finish editing your low-resolution sequence, you use the Media Manager to create a copy with full-resolution settings. For this step, you choose the Create Offline option in the Media pop-up menu.
Important: It is important to understand the difference between clips and media files when performing this step. This option only creates a new sequence with new sequence clips at full-resolution, but no new media files are created. Once you have a
sequence with full-resolution settings, you can recapture your media files at full- resolution. Also, the word “offline” in the Create Offline option actually refers to creating clips whose media files are offline, and doesn’t actually relate to the offline/online editing process. For more information, see “Clips Described By Their Properties” on
    page 31.

You can use sites like Google Docs and the online version of Microsoft Office to edit documents as though they were web pages. If someone posted the document there and sent you a link, it should work in Firefox.
However, if someone sent you a file as an email attachment, it's more likely that you will need to edit it offline, outside of Firefox.

  • Upgrade lost the Offline thumbnails

I upgraded my Photoshop Album catalog to the Photoshop Element 7 organizer.  All of the photos that were burned onto CD now have no
thumbnail.  When I try to edit an offline photo it tries to reconnect, but will only connect to a physical hard drive, not the CD.
To resolve the problem I copied all of the CD photos into a folder and was reconnecting the photos, but some of them are saying "The
photo already exists in the catalog."  I searched in the catalog for the file name and the only instance is the unconnected one.
Is there a better way to reconnect my offline photos?
If this is the right way to fix my missing thumbnail problem, then how do I reconnect a photo that the catalog says already exists?
    Browser: Microsoft IE
    Operating System: Windows XP Home

Many people have reported problems with archived photos in recent versions of PSE, and Adobe has been unable to help.  It definitely appears to be an unsupported feature, and I strongly recommend that people stop using it.
In your case, the best way to recover is to go back to Album and move the offline photos back online to your hard drive. In later versions of PSE, you use the File > Move command to do that, not sure about Album. Then, once all the photos have been moved to your hard drive, in PSE 8 reconvert the Album catalog using File > Catalog > Convert.
