Editing images stored on external HDD

All:
I keep all of my images on an external HDD, which is backed up on a second one. Despite having a pretty fast machine (quad-core i7, 1GB video card, 8GB RAM) I still find that working in the develop module can be a little slow. I suspect that it may partly due to the fact that my primary external is USB 2/3 but I can only connect it as USB 2 for now.
In the mean time I would like to edit my images from my internal HDD and update the images on my external HDD. Is there a way to do this? If so, how can I go about it. My goal is to only use my internal HDD as a temporary location while I'm working with the images.
Thank you.

The cache size or even its existence has no affect on editing performance. Where it does help is to reduce the time delay between selecting an image and having the ability to begin editing it. With a larger cache you'll see benefits when louping through images in Develop module, but not in editing the images.
The OPs real problem is the use of a USB drive.

    From the documentation:
    URL Reference
1.Insert a dummy image in your template.
2.In Microsoft Word's Format Picture dialog box select the Web tab. Enter the following syntax in the Alternative text region to reference the image URL:
    url:{'http://image location'}
    For example, enter: url:{'http://www.oracle.com/images/ora_log.gif'}
    Element Reference from XML File
1.Insert a dummy image in your template.
2.In Microsoft Word's Format Picture dialog box select the Web tab. Enter the following syntax in the Alternative text region to reference the image URL:
    url:{IMAGE_LOCATION}
where IMAGE_LOCATION is an element from your XML file that holds the full URL to the image.
You can also build a URL based on multiple elements at runtime. Just use the concat function to build the URL string. For example:
    url:{concat(SERVER,'/',IMAGE_DIR,'/',IMAGE_FILE)}
where SERVER, IMAGE_DIR, and IMAGE_FILE are element names from your XML file that hold the values to construct the URL.
This method can also be used with the OA_MEDIA reference as follows:
    url:{concat('${OA_MEDIA}','/',IMAGE_FILE)}

  • How do I edit photos  stored on external wifi drive with iPad?

I have stored many photos on a Seagate Wifi external drive and would like to edit them using my iPad.  Only photos stored on Camera Roll come up for editing.  Can anyone help solve this problem please.

I don't have either the device or the associated app, but from a quick glance at the Seagate site it looks like you would have to follow a three- or four-step process:
    * Use the Seagate Media App to copy photo(s) from the external drive to your Camera Roll.
    * Use the editing program of your choice to edit it/them.
    * Use the Seagate Media App to copy the edited photo(s) back to the external drive
    * Optionally, remove the editied photo(s) from the Camera Roll.

  • Database (catalog) for images stored on external devices

I have lots and lots of images spread across various internal, external drives, cd's, dvd's. My question is does the new LR keep tabs of exactly where my image files are? I am considering purchasing iMatch because it will keep a running database and let me know if a certain image is on an external HD or a cd or dvd.
Now if LR will also do this then it might be worth upgrading from v1.x to v2.x.

  • How do I transfer all my iPhoto images to an external HDD?

My iMac HD is getting full, it has a lifetime of images and music on it and so I have just purchased a networked Hard Disk which allows me to share its contents across my home network. I want to move all my music & photos onto it, but I know that if I just drag the files across I will lose all the metadata I have added to the photos, such as the location of the photos, added manually as they are scanned in images that date back to the 1970's. Allideas are welcome as to how to move this data across.
    Thank you

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Access music stored on external hdd

I purchased a 1tb Time Capsule that I want to use as a ext Hdd to store my music as I had used all my 300gb mac capacity, I transferred the music files but I am having problems adding them back to my itunes playlists without coping them back onto my system hdd. When it seems to transfer without doing this it shows an exclamation mark against the song (sometimes it works) but mostly it states it cannot locate the source. Also the transfer stops around 20000 tracks, however I have around 40000. It relaise this is not the Time Capsules main purpose but it looked possible prior to purchase and it was the coolest looking ext hdd
Can anyone give this novice some ides how to proceed

Don't use the method you are using.  Use:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
Note that the purpose of Time Machine is to back up your files for the day a hard drive crashes.  The thing is, Time Capsule itself is a hard drive and will fail some day (and fail could also be stolen, fire, flood).  If you don't have a second copy of your iTunes collection then when that happens you won't have a backup.

  • Want to move LR5 catalog to an external HDD and incorporate my Aperture3 files already stored on another external HDD.

With the demise of Aperture, and lack of space on my mac, I would like to consolidate all my LR5 and Aperture images onto ONE external HDD.
My Aperture originals are already on one external HDD, and my LR5 images currently occupy (too much) of my hard drive on my MB air.
Is there an uncomplicated way to join the two sets on another new external HDD?
    Thanks

what I meant is that I would like to access my Aperture images via LR5, so have just the one LR5 catalog for all my images.
This is a goal that I would recommend!
However, I can't really state if that's what you need to do with your photos in Aperture, as I have never used Aperture. I'm sure someone else who does use Aperture will be along soon to comment, or you can try your favorite search engine.

  • Limiting Space used on external HDD for Time Machine

I'm really clueless on how this works and I would appreciate your thoughts on this. I recently bought an external HDD and I want to limit the allocated space for TM to only half of the capacity. I recently formatted the external HDD to FAT32 in order for me to use it with my other systems.
Is it possible to make this work? I saw an article wherein you can create a disk image in the external HDD, will that work?
Below are some specs of my external HDD:
Objective: Use Time Machine on my 1TB External HDD while limiting the space to only 400MB for back-up.
External HDD Settings: Iomega External HDD formatted as FAT32 and Master Boot Record

    Hello,
Here is the best solution I can think of without using any extra software to alter your Time Machine settings.
You could use Disk Utility to divide the 1 TB external HDD into two partitions (400 GB + 600 GB).
    (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app)
Warning: Using Disk Utility to divide the drive into two partitions will erase everything on them.
Once that's done, when you reconnect your hard drive to your computer, and open Time Machine in System Settings, you could assign Time Machine to the 400 GB partition.
Here is the catch though, Time Machine cannot backup to FAT32, so you would have to format at least the 400 GB partition as "Mac OS Extended Journaled" with Disk Utility. If you want to use that drive with other non-Mac systems, best solution would be to share it over the network.
That is the best I can think of for your problem. Hope that helps.

  • Externally edited image not stored with referenced files?

When I open an image in the external editor, do my work in PS, and then save, the new file is located in the Aperture Library even though the master for the image is a referenced file. Is there any way to change this so the new images will be placed in the same folder as the referenced images? Thanks...gary
mac book, G5 dual   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm afraid for the moment you have to do it manually by selecting the image and going to File/Relocate Master.
We should have and option in Aperture to allow us to have ALL the images in an external location.

  • Can I move the default location of the iPhoto library to an external source, leaving a preview image on my main HDD? Do I need to move to something like Apature to do this?

Can I move the default location of the iPhoto library to an external source, leaving a preview image on my main HDD?
Do I need to move to something like Apature to do this?
I currenlty have a NAS which holds all my images.

Yes you can, but you really, really don't want to.
You can store your photos on the External and have iPhoto link to them in that location. It's called having a Referenced Library.
In this scenario iPhoto creates an alias to the files in the Library and that's why you don't want to do this. Aliases work fin when everything is on the same volume or disk. However, if the alias points to something on another disk or volume and something in the path to the file changes, then the alias is broken. That means you could find yourself fixing each alias for every single photo in your Library, one at a time if something goes wrong.
And heaven forbid you would ever want to move the files to another disk.
See why I say you really, really don't want to?
Also note, that your edited photos would still be on the internal HD as they are always stored in the Library.
Aperture, on the other hand, can deal with this scenario quite easily, and has tools to reconnect to the original should the link be broken

  • Image Orientation Reset Accessing External HDD Images

I'm using Lightroom 2.1 on Windows XP. Ever since the later LR 1.x versions, I've been running into this problem.
I initially edit my images on my internal HDD, then I move them to my external once I'm done with them. The problem occurs when I go to the images (now on the external) in LR and all the vertical/portrait images (thumbs) revert to the horizontal/landscape orientation. When in LR and I go to the folder where they reside, the thumbs initially show in their proper rotated (vert/portrait) orientation, but then they automatically get turned back around to the incorrect initial/landscape orientation. When dealing with 10's of thousands of images, this grows VERY frustrating.
    Is this a common bug?
    Thank you.
    Seth

When I move the files to the external, I copy the folder in Explorer and paste it into the appropriate folder on the external. Yes, I then use 'locate missing folder' in LR. So therefore all the metadata and settings stay associated with the files. The files are mostly DNG, along with some JPEG and TIF.
Strangely enough, the rotation setting is the only one that gets reverted to the original setting. I make other changes to the files as well (saturation, clarity, tone, vignette, etc), and all of those hold their changed value correctly (as well as caption/title/location and other metadata). And since all these develop settings (incl rotation as I am led to believe) are saved in the LR '.lrcat' file (I DO NOT use .xmp sidecar files), it strikes me as very strange that only the rotation is reset.
The only files where the rotation is not reset are the TIF files that I have created by opening a DNG in PS to make other corrections. The reason being that the rotation setting is saved in the TIF file, not in the .lrcat settings file.
The reason I don't auto-rotate in the 5D is b/c I'd rather have to turn the camera, but see the files full screen on the camera. Would rather not change this if possible... hoping I can discover the issue in LR first. Otherwise maybe I'll have to give in, but not just ready yet...

  • Storing iTunes music on an external HDD

What is the best way to go about storing my iTunes music on an external HDD but still be able to play them iTunes etc? I've tried over the last couple of days to fiddle around with this but ended up losing 1,200 of my near 4,000 songs!!!

    All help much appreciated!

    Apple's already written the guide:

Just had to refer to it myself when changing up to a bigger external hard drive. Follow the directions exactly and you should be fine.
