Editing imported graphic

I know this is a basic question, but bear with me as I've started using Illustrator a few days ago & I cannot find an answer to this basic question anywhere else...
For years I've used Canvas to do all my work and it was easy to work on, say, an imported jpeg and edit the image (erase, draw, add text, whatever).
The same graphic imported into Illustrator doesn't allow me to do anything.
How do I perform the above basic tasks in Illustrator?
I can do the editing in Photoshop but not, it seems in Illustrator.
Thanks all,
TonyT

Many thanks to Frank & Scott for their responses and input.
I guess I'm somewhat disappointed as I'm desperately trying to find a near-as-poss alternative to using the Mac version of [Deneba-now-ADC] Canvas.
I'd been so used to using this for over 20years, but since ADC stopped the development of the Mac version it's becoming evermore unstable.
I had hoped that Illustrator would do the trick but having to do the editing in one app (Photoshop) and the "creative" additions in another (Illustrator) is a big backward step for me.
A lot of my work necessitates importing existing jpegs and/or TIFF's and adding and removing detail, text, etc from these images.  Sad to say Illustrator doesn't cut it or come anywhere near to Canvas's qualities when doing this sort of editing.
But, hey, thanks again guys for your wise words... much appreciated.

  • FrameMaker 5.5, imported graphics couldn´t be saved after editing

    Hey togehther,
i have a problem with FrameMaker 5.5 on a Windows XP Workstation with Spervice Pack 2:
In case of editing an imported graphic in a FrameMaker documnet (e.g. an AutoCAD drawing) and saving the document after editing the drawing, FrameMaker crashes/freezes.
After reopening the document the drawing/graphic is not changed.
What cause can be present here?

    Hi Okeller,
You may have placed an OLE link into the FM document by just copying and then pasting into FM. Hence Your double click can open the original application to edit the graphic. Avoid OLE like hell!
But you hear MMH: FM 5.5 is now 12 years old and XP is 5 years younger ...
    Try the following:
    - Double click on your graphic to open the app in which you edit it
    - In this application create a graphic from the file, something that FM can handle: eps with preview or as the last a pixel image (tiff) and save this to the project directory
    - in FM remove the graphic from the anchored frame and import the new graphic file by reference (not copy) and adapt size etc.

  • Strange Facet of Imported Graphic: ò\e2

    Hello Framers,
I am using Frame 7.1 and have just taken over a project from a colleague who is sometimes, er, careless with best practices.
So I MIF-washed all files (replacing all OLE2 graphics) and tried to save as RTF. Frame crashed. I looked at the Object properties of some imported graphics and found this:
A minute later I looked again at the same properties again and the Facet was "DIB" -- in other words normal.
This is the same graphic, same command (!go). In between I had looked at some other graphics and seen another with the strange facet. Because it is intermittent it was hard to get such a pair of grabs.
I looked in the MIF and could find nothing unusual (but I am by no means a MIF-guru).
Has anyone else seen such strange facets? Or have any ideas? As a workaround I shall try re-importing all graphics and hoping that the problem does not come back.
    --- Derek

    Thanks Sheila and Art,
Since this is an intermittent problem it's hard to investigate. I entirely agree about BMPs and embedding, but I inherited this project and that's how it is.
I do the Save As RTF because my SME is enamoured of Word; I convert the RTF into DOC and he can then edit in his favourite tool. With Track Changes I can then see what needs to be done in the Framemaker source.
I have Windows XP SP3 running with 2GB RAM so I don't think I am hitting a resource limit.
Before posting I had extracted all embedded graphics and included them as PNGs by Reference. But Save As RTF still crashed on one chapter; it was while investigating the graphics in that chapter that I stumbled on the strange facet problem.
I'm 99% certain that the Save As RTF crash is related to the  graphics; if I delete all graphics the save goes OK. I cannot say for sure that it's related to the facets but an intermittent crash related to an intermittent strange facet sounds mighty suspicious.
Yesterday after posting I re-embedded all graphics (delete and re-import with ! f i f ) but it still crashed. So I converted the larger graphics to PNG and re-imported them. I tried a quick Save As RTF and it worked. Hurrah! So I repeated the Save, this time to another directory, and it crashed. This morning it crashed again (but not before I had made a copy of the successful save ! ). There are still small graphics (screen caps of buttons in running text) but it will take me ages to convert all of them (it took an hour to do the larger graphics).
Thus I have files to keep my SME happy for now, but there may be some nasty surprises waiting for me somewhere down the line. That's why I'd like to nail this to the wall. I'll try Art's suggestion of yet another MIF-wash (which will be the third) and report back if there's anything new.

  • Import graphics that don't need to be rendered?

Is there a graphic format for stills that I can bring into FC4.5 without having to render on the time line? I’m importing folders full of stills (screen grabs) to create narrated slideshows, and having to re-render every time I shift a transition point...boring!
    Thanks!

Interesting; so might I select a different codec until I’m done editing and ready to export, then switch back to Animation?
Ultimately, I’m knocking the file down with Squeeze, exporting as QT using “Current Settings,” and getting beautiful results with tiny files, at 6 fps. Btw, the imported graphics are the same size as the project.
    Appreciate the comments.

  • Imported graphic looks soft/pixelated

I designed an arrow in Photoshop that I saved as a .Tiff and want to bring into FCP. It seems real soft around the edges (almost pixelated). Anyone have any advice for importing graphics that look good.
    Thanks.

    1. Are you suggesting that I change this to something else?
If you want your graphics to look good, yes. DV is the very BOTTOM of the barrel SD...and it doesn't treat graphics well. Change your sequence settings to ProRes for SD, or DV50 and they will look better. You will have to render everything, but the graphics will look better.
CAVIAT: If you are going to put this back on tape then don't do this. DV50 or ProRes cannot be output to a DV tape. If you are going back to tape, then you will have to live with the quality of the graphics. It is what it is. GIGO... Garbage In, Garbage Out.
    2. I have already edited most of the project. Will it cause any problems to change it at this point?
Well, you will have to render every clip...but you can wait until you output. You will get a bright green render bar above the footage, but it will still play fine. But it won't look full quality until you render everything.

  • Method to Import graphics using se78

    Hi Friends ,
Can anyone tell me how to import graphics in bmp format using se78.
I import a image but image becomes blur .
Give me solution how to upload the images using se78 with same as orginal image.

    Hi,
Edit your photo with 'Windows Live Photo gallery' or 'Windows Picture and fax viewer' based on your operating system.  You will have auto adjustment, resolution etc.
Keep optimal size of the picture to fit in the window size of your form.  If you keep it too small, it might be zoomed and blurred.  Also, try uploading it through black and white option.  It would be more highlighted.

An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document. The file has been saved, but has lost some image data. Please report this error to Adobe Technical Support.

We are running FM version 7.2b144 on MS Win xp Pro (32 bit), and I did not notice this until service pack 3 was installed. I believe I have found a work around to the situation and another contributing cause. If graphic files are placed directly in an anchored frame instead of importing by reference, the file somehow becomes misplaced. If you right click the graphic and open the Object Properties dialog box, and see the phrase "no referenced file" below Main Editor: Referenced File: in the lower left hand corner, this has happened. I found if I removed all graphics files without references and imported them by reference, the source file may then be properly saved. I am also using a program called CCleaner, which removes cookies, temp files, browsing history and the like from a system. If the program settings are chosen too aggressively, and the application runs when FM has a file open, this same error will occur, even if all files are referenced properly. I don't know if SP3 has some similar application which is now running in the background and causing this.
To summarize, if you want to retain SP3, I have eliminated this error by confirming the links to referenced graphics files and avoiding using 3rd party "cleaners" while FM is open.

  • Width Wrong for Imported Graphics in Frame 9

Has anyone else had issues with Framemaker detecting the wrong width when importing graphics?  As an example, when I import a JPG of a button that should be 21 x 21 pixels, Framemaker displays the width as 24px and the height as 21px.  This results in a smashed graphic.  If I adjust the dimensions of the graphic in FrameMaker to the correct dimensions, then print the PDF, the right border of the image is off.
I have tried capturing the graphic a variety of different ways, and I always experience the same results.  I can import the graphic into Captivate or Word and the sizing is correct.  Any ideas?  Thanks!
I am using FrameMaker version 9.0p237 as part of the Technical Communication Suite 2.

I just tested this with a sample file at the 21x21 dimensions, and you are absolutely correct. FM9 screws up the dimensions (and default dpi resolution) for PNG and GIF files. I also tried BMP and TIF equivalents and these were ok. FM8 does not have this problem, so it looks like Adobe played with the PNG and GIF filters a bit (perhaps to get rid of all of the extra colours coming in).
For a JPG or PNG import of a 21x21 at 96dpi, FM9 seems to think that it is 24x21 at 110dpi. FM8 gets it right.
For a GIF import of the same, FM9 thinks it is 22x21 at 75dpi. FM8 got it right.
What's also strange is that if the dimensions are both even, e.g. 20x20 at 96dpi, then FM9 gets it right for the JPG, PNG and GIF. However, if the *first* dimension is odd, e.g. 21x20 it gets it wrong again as before, but if the second dimesion is odd, e.g. 20x21, the it gets it right. VERY WIERD!
    It's definitely a BUG.
I would suggest that you either use BMP or TIF for now OR try to increase your icons by 1 pixel to make them an even size, e.g. 22x22.
I'd also recommend that you not use JPG for these, but rather GIF or PNG, because you may generate some unwanted artifacts in the JPG due to the lossy compression used.

  • Generating a List of References in FM12 to include External Cross-References and Imported Graphics, but no Imported Graphic references show in the LOR.  Is this a bug in FM12 or what am I doing wrong?

and has always generated the list of references just fine.  Now in FM12, the LOR no longer will give any references for the Imported Graphics.  I have even tried creating a new chapter from the FM12 templates, adding the chapter to the front of the book, and allowing FM12 to use that file as the template for the LOR.  Still no success - it will not give any references to the Imported Graphics in my chapter files.  Is this a bug in FM12?  Is there something different about FM12 that would cause this not to work with existing FM11 files???  Please help, I need this resolved and working.
    Thank you,
    Beverly

    Arnis and Jeff,
Thank you both very much for your assistance.  I was able to figure out why the Adobe Application Manager kept failing on installing the patches.  Idiot me didn't unzip them first.  Once I unzipped the patch files, the installer worked fine.  Both patches are now successfully installed; my FM version is now 12.0.2..
To answer some of your questions:
Yes, I have administrator privileges on my PC.
Yes, I had all of the files in the book opened when I generated and/or updated the LOR file.  So that was not the issue.
With the patches installed, I opened a book and all of its files.  I updated the LOR and all works fine – it gives me all of the Imported Graphic references. So there must have been an issue with that release of FM12 (12.0.0.329), which was fixed with the patches.
Again, thank you both for your help!
    Best regards,
    Beverly

  • Taking Files Home Then Returning - Imported Graphics

I'd be interested in techniques for copying Frame files from the office shared drive for homework purposes, then returning the files to the office, when those files have graphics imported by reference from the office shared drive.
Right now all the graphics links get broken when I do this, and require painstaking reconstruction. Not worth the trouble.
I use Frame 7.2 on Windows XP.

These are good ideas. I'm not sure if Monica's will work for me because my office Frame and graphics files are on a network shared drive ("H"), and my home PC is self-contained (all files on C). I haven't tried it lately, but I think when the Frame files hunt for imported graphics at home they will look for an H drive. Is there a way around that?
Accessing the office drives from home as Jack suggests is a possibility but our Citrix-based system has quirks that have always stymied my efforts.
I think what I'm looking for is a way to "turn off" the imported graphics links before saving the Frame files to my jump drive. I can work without the graphics at home. Then I could turn them back on when I copy the files back onto the office network drive.
Perhaps this is a wish list item....

  • Generating an LOR for imported graphics in a Frame 12 book is failing.

When I attempt to generate a List of References for imported graphics in Frame 12, all I get back are the PDFs and PS files. Why no SVGs or TIFs, or other graphics formats? Is there a setting somewhere that determines which types of graphics files will be listed?

Other files that are not included are SVG and JPEG.

How can I edit imported audio track? After selecting and deleting region, and joining remaining parts, it keeps playing the track with the deleted region!
    What am I doing wrong?

After selecting and deleting region, and joining remaining parts, it keeps playing the track with the deleted region!
    What am I doing wrong?
How exactly are you doing this?
When I cut out a part of an audio region, then drag the remaining parts together, so they are touching, the track will skip the cut out section when playing the file.  Also, if I select the remaining parts of the region and use the command "Edit > join regions". This will create a new audio file with the cut out part deleted.
You should see this prompt, when you are joining the regions:

What is the best way to import graphic styles from another document (Win XP, JS)?
I know there are Document methods for importing CharacterStyles and ParagraphStyles... but why not graphic styles?

no direct way that I know of, but it is possible, I would
    - create a temporary pathItem
    - apply the desired Graphic Style
    - copy the temp pathItem and paste in into the destination document
    - delete the temp item from both source and destination documents
    - loop thru all graphic styles if I needed all graphic styles imported
